Lesley | 1594 comments Because people have requested this, we will run this group challenge again this year with a slight change to the process.

The purpose is to see how many pages we can read collectively over a year with totals gathered monthly. I will record the monthly GROUP total in a post immediately below this so we can track our progress.

Rules -

♦ If you want to participate copy the template below and post a new comment. Once you add your comment I will add your name to the list of Participating Members which will be linked to your message. This will be the post where you will record your monthly reading and totals.

Add any books you read during the challenge time frame 01/01/2015 to 31/12/2015. No matter when you sign up all books that you read from January 2015 will be eligible.

♦ When you finish reading a book, go back to your original comment and update it with the number of pages, book link, date read. At the end of each month ensure your pages read and any bonus points are totalled and clearly recorded.

♦ Any book counts, as long as you read it this time-frame - book club selections, audio books, ebooks - add it! When counting audio or ebooks use the most popular edition of the paperback/hardcover on Goodreads for the page count.

♦ Started but DNF (Did Not Finish) a book: add it, but only add the number of pages you actually read and comment that you did so.

♦ There will be two bonuses, one for the most pages read during the month, and one for the most bonus points obtained. Winners will be notified via message and given instructions for their bonus round selections.

♦ Bonus rounds will be a little structured this year to help winners out in constructing their bonus rounds. Generally page winners will construct a bonus around something/s specific - book with rose on cover; written by woman author; set in Egypt for example. Bonus winners bonus rounds would be more around genre, format (ebook, audio), themed etc.

I would suggest when you have totted up your totals each month you 'hide' your reading list in a spoiler. Click HERE for how to do this and link to books.

Darkpool | 1032 comments Giving this a crack this year, tho I really don't care too much about the number of pages I read. We'll see how it goes...

BLK 2015: How Many Pages?
Total pages read: 17027
Total bonus points: 207

Jan: 2633 pages
1. Cinder 387pages
2. Wood Sprites 496pages
3. The Great Roxhythe 229 pages this year
4. 44 Scotland Street. Audiobook, read about 10% last year, estimate 292pages worth "read" this year.
5. Equal Rites. Approx 146 pages read this year
6. Scarlet. 452 pages
7. One for the Money. Audiobook, 320 pages
8. Heart of Steel. 311 pages

Feb: 1178 pages, 10 bonus point
1. Ice Games 164 pages
2. Cress 550 pages, plus two characters turn out to be father/daughter, so I'll claim 5 bonus points :-)
3. Dust Listened to the audiobook, but most popular print edition on GR has 464 pages. Juliet's father features more prominently in this one too, so I'll claim another 5 bonus points.

Mar: 1801 pages, 22 bonus points.
1. The Ruby Circle 348 pages
2. Death Masks 432 pages
3. Tethered 198 pages
4. The Masqueraders 287 pages
5. Doctor Who 12 Doctors 12 Stories 551 pages. 12 bonus points for 12 short stories, plus 10 for genre science fiction!

Apr: 1656 pages, no bonus points.
1. Knots & Crosses 225 pages
2. The Empty Throne I listened to the audiobook, so the most popular edition has 302 pages
3. Curtsies & Conspiracies 310 pages
4. Death on Demand 271 pages
5. Curse of the Spellmans Audiobook. Furious to discover I had an abridged edition, so got codex version out of library and skim-read to try and catch what was missed. Happily the bunch of loose ends I had lying around at the end of the audiobook are now neatly tidied up too. 405 pages.
6. Flowers For Mrs Harris 143 pages

May: 686 pages, no bonus points.
1. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress 302 pages
2. The Chimes 289 pages
3. The Absolute Beginners Guide: Making Chain Mail Jewelry: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started 95 pages

Jun: 1200 pages, 30 bonus points.
1. The Astronaut Wives Club 300 pages Audiobook (although I also got the paperback out of the library so I could look at the photos) bonus points:15
2. The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire 339 pages.
3. An Abundance of Katherines. Mostly audiobook, but I also had the paperback out for the graphs. 215 pages.
4. A Vintage Affair 342 pages

Jul: 1471 pages, 40 bonus points.
1. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Audiobook. Most popular goodreads edition has 247 pages) 10 points for YA
2. Magonia 320 pages - audiobook. 10 points for YA
3. Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe 235 pages. Finally finished after 2 months. Amazing how motivating a library due date can be when you can't renew the book again!
4. Dauntless 304 pages. 10 points for space, 5 for a person on the cover.
5. The Last Queen 365 pages. 5 points for a person on the cover

Aug: 1365 pages, 95 bouns points.
1. At Home: A Short History of Private Life. I mostly listened to the audio, although I did get the illustrated edition out of the library and thoroughly enjoyed looking at the photos and reading the captions. I discovered that this was a foot-noted book, and not all footnotes made it into the audiobook (although many did)so I'm rather cheekily going to use this edition for the page count. At Home: A short history of private life 560 pages and 25 bonus points for audiobook.
2. Fallout. Woohoo! that's another book from the bookpool read, even if it's too late to count. I really like this series. 286 pages, and 20 points for a NZ author.
3. The Spellman Files. Audiobook. most popular goodreads edition has 375 pages. 25 bonus points for audio. By dumb luck this book had a minor character named Lynda (or possibly Linda - hard to tell on audio), so I claim 5 points because that's my name :-)
4. How to Catch a Cricket Match. 144 pages 20 points NZ author Harry Ricketts

Sept: 662 pages
1. Magic Shifts 342 pages
2. The Affair of the 39 Cufflinks. listened to the audio book, most popular goodreads edition has 320 pages.

Oct: 1151 pages, 10 bonus points.
1. Dissolution 443 pages and I'll take 10 points for A character stuck somewhere away from home, as our hero is stranded to a certain degree by bad weather.
2. The Mauritius Command. Audiobook - most popular Goodreads edition has 365 pages.
3. The Terracotta Dog. 343p

Nov: 354 pages
1. Five Red Herrings. Audiobook. 354 pages

Dec: 2571 pages
1. The Beekeeper's Apprentice. Audiobook. 341 pages
2. Mansfield Park - as this was an abridgement it is probably only the equivalent of 50 pages, but I need every page I can account for.
3. The Hiding Places 340 pages. Has taken me forever to finish. (actually, finishing it was the easy bit. The start of it was the difficult bit, mostly because my brain was full of other staff and I had no concentration to read)
4. The Blind Contessa's New Machine 207 pages
5. The Case of the Left-Handed Lady 234 pages
6. Fairest 220 pages
7.Cleopatra's Moon Audioook. 355 pages.
8. Winter 824 pages.

Unfinished at the end of 2015: 299 pages
1. Son of the Shadows. 75 pages read
2. How Green Was My Valley Audiobook. I'm pretty much bang on halfway through, and the most popular edition is 448 pages, so let's call that 224 pages then.

A very interesting exercise.

Did it last year but this year is critical because that is my organic licence gone. I have to take him to court so am preparing the submission. All those photos and statements and getting the police to give me the last six years' complaints sheet is taking forever. The photos are crucial and need a lot of work. Have to have them printed specially!

message 17: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 1594 comments Sharlene, I see you haven't put page numbers for Turning Lila since it's not got anything on the GR record. If you think it's about the same size as Tormenting Lila just use the same page numbers. Can't be too particular when there's no print version of an ebook so just take a guess at it.

LOL! As it happens I do own a copy of Crime and Punishment...

One is an audiobook, and another an ebook, so I'll deffo be doing some tricky estimation for them! The 3rd I know precisely where I was up to ;-)

Thanks, I still had it on my ipad so I got the page number from there for the ebook. All added up. I've had such a slack month. Page count much lower than everyone else. I've had so many of my reserved books come in lately and that's what has made my count where it is. I'm starting to feel a bit pressured and all the books I've had have further reserves so can't be renewed.

What you are doing with completing series is something I was intending doing this year too. I seem to read #1 in so many series and not get any further and it isn't because I don't want to read any more. My current plan is come winter time I'll go back to a series and complete it. Promise! :)

Somehow I don't think we'll ever beat Talia or Kathleen though. ☺

Courtesy of our winner Talia!

If you read books in February fitting any of these features, claim the appropriate points and show those in your total bonus points for February.

You can claim the points for as many times as you read books fitting them.

5 points for a book featuring father and daughter
10 points for 'kindred' in title
15 points for a book with a book on the cover

Brilliant! And I thought I did nothing except read all month!"

It was a lot of shorts (15 to 100-ish pages) plus my course text - because I'm in summer school, but there are a couple of novels on there. I can read up to 350 pages a day without it interfering with my study, any more than that and things start to slow down. But don't worry, I slow down later (and then read more in procrastination at essay seasons) when Uni is busy.
Have fun with the challenge!
(See I'm procrastinating - I should be referencing a pile of Cookbooks)

Lesley | 1594 comments Okay, here's my bonus points to earn for March.

2 March is St David's day (often overshadowed by St Pat)
10 points for any books read whose author is named David - first or last name.

Of course we can't leave St Patrick out
15 points for every book read that has a predominantly green cover.

And just to really test you
20 points for any book read originally published in March of any year.
25 points if the author of any book read was born in March of any year.

Darkpool | 1032 comments Alrighty. My apologies if I screw this up... all the points seem to be multiples of 5 so far, but...

1 point for every short story you read... so if you read an anthology with 12 short stories, that's 12 points.

14 March is the anniversary of the birth of Albert Einstein, so my other two challenges are in honour of this legendary scientist
10 points for every book in the genre science fiction
20 points for every non fiction book on a science subject.

I really enjoyed it! You should definitely give it a try if you can. I thought the worldbuilding was really great, and the characters were fun.

confused... which points are we doing for March?

message 45: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 1594 comments We are doing both. Each month the person who gets the most bonus points creates a challenge and the person who reads the most pages creates another.

Sorry Sharlene, missed your post. We are doing both point challenges each month. Hopefully more people will have more opportunity to earn some points, therefore get a chance to create future challenges - variety is the spice of life :)

You could always use the US 31 March as the end of the month which means you have all day to day! (lol)
