˃˃˃ Interview with the Author
Q – What inspired you to write April and Sam’s story?

A – When I first thought of April and Sam, I was working crazy long hours at the time and (strangely enough) a slowed down cover of a rap song made me think of an overworked assistant who starts out totally in love with her Tycoon boss and, by the end of the song, she’s disillusioned by the lifestyle and is ready to branch out on her own.

Teaching The Boss starts after this music video I made in my mind. April is just coming into her own and Sam doesn’t really realize how much he needs her until she is gone. And then the billionaire has to bargain to get her back. The shifting power play between the two was a blast to write!

Q - Why should readers give these books a try?

A – All I can say is that I LOVED writing them and I think readers will really be drawn into the characters. I adore putting two strong leads into tough situations and seeing them work together to grow. For this first book in the series, I took the quintessential office romance, an untamed billionaire and a sexy secretary, and then completely shook up the power structure between the two and saw how they reacted. Throw in a few secrets and revenge plots and the result is explosive….

Q – Why did you choose to set the Billionaires In The City books New York City?

A – Because it’s the city of endless possibilities! There are so many different fantastic settings to play with, between the Upper East Side, Soho, Brooklyn and Queens. They’re all so close together and each have distinct personalities that can fit the characters perfectly. But, as much as I love NYC, I’m planning to branch out in the future, so I made sure I didn’t name the city in the subtitle. In book two, the Simon and Grace even take a trip to the Hamptons where they can get into even more trouble!

This is more like a 3.5. It lost stars when the story just up and ended. It left questions still unanswered and stories left untold. Yes the next book does have one of the characters in it but I'm still like

Ok so, here is what we have

 photo image.jpg1_zpskduhwmb2.jpg

No one is quite who they seem.

April has been working for Sam for 6 years, more than worked, she has helped establish his company. During that time she has fallen secretly in love with him, she is also Sam's go-to person, lap dog, advisor and good friend. So when she hears Sam and his 3 week new sex toy, super model girlfriend Oksana talking about her, she's done. April quits and immediately goes to work for Sam's estranged father Donald. I mean literally. Quits Friday, works for evil daddy Monday.

While working for Donald, April stumbles across paperwork that could end Sam's company. Of course, she becomes conflicted with helping Sam or believing dad. Things start heating up, PI Simon is hired to help save Sam's company. The time starts clicking and everyone is now suspect. Is Simon trustable? Is Oksana hiding something up her sleeve? What about Donald? Is he truly the villain?

Here is where the story starts getting good and you're asking yourself, who is the evil person!! And the minute it starts to really flourish; it ends! No cliffhanger, no to be continued, no nothing. It was like the author really had something else to do, so she's like. Yeah that's it. I'm done. Let's just end the questions throw a HEA and write The End!

One of many office romance stories. Quite typical. A manwhore of a boss, skinny, bitchy ex girlfriends of said boss and guess what...yes, that's right, an unappreciated, overworked assistant with a hidden silly crush. And some daddy issues.

I saw this novel on the Kindle Store for free and so I thought I would give it a try. This is part of the Billionaires in the City series of books, it is a story about a college student (April) who is in love with her 'hunky' boss Sam Hunt. This book takes us on the journey with April through quitting college, losing Sam then working for his nemesis. It is a good story to read and one that will keep your attention, the characters are well developed and are realistic. I will definately be reading the rest of the series to see the characters develop even more.

It was okay book, I understand having a crush on your assistant after a while you say fuck it and go for it you do not wait until 6 YEARS and to top it off after she quits. He should have realized how important she was not let his hussy of the month do damage. He was so lame no alpha male just lame, she however I did like but there were moments I wanted to slap her to get real. overall it was okay I hope the second one is better it does sound interesting.

REVIEW: 3.5 stars--TEACHING THE BOSS is the first installment in Mallory Crowe’s adult, contemporary Billionaires in the City romance series. This is business school student/ professional assistant April Morgan, and billionaire businessman Sam Hunt’s storyline. Each book in the novella series can be read as a stand alone although some of the characters will cross over between installments or be introduced in the preceding storyline.

Told from dual third person perspectives (April and Sam) TEACHING THE BOSS focuses on April and Sam’s business relationship that will spiral out of control when Sam’s current flavor of the week becomes jealous of April’s presence in Sam’s life. April has focused her entire career on helping Sam get ahead, and her payback is betrayal and heartbreak. Desperate for employment, April gets an offer she cannot refuse from Sam’s father whose personal interest in his son’s business may or may not be everything it seems to be.

Sam’s relationship with his father has been strained most of his life. April is well aware of the animosity between father and son, and in this Sam’s friendship and relationship with April will be stretched to its limits when April takes the position with Donald Hunt. April refuses to play their games but will become a pawn in a war between father and son.

The relationship between April and Sam begins as employer and employee but April has always had a crush on her boss. Watching the numerous beautiful women come and go in Sam’s life has relegated April to the friendship zone and in this April has made the decision that she will no longer be a part of Sam’s life. April has been more than Sam’s personal assistant; she has been instrumental in many of Sam’s business opportunities and acquisitions. It is not until April resigns her position with Sam, does Sam want something more. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the over the top erotic factor. There is little to no graphic or sexually explicit language.

The secondary and supporting characters include April’s fellow classmate Annabelle, whose connection to Sam brought April into her life; Sam’s father Donald Hunt whose actions speak louder than the words he is unable to say; and April’s best friend Jessica who isn’t afraid to point out the obvious; and of course the inter office gossip and mole who relays all of the important information to an outside source. We are introduced to business consultant Simon West who will work behind the scenes to help Sam get revenge on the father, he believes, tried to destroy his life. Simon needs something from Sam but Sam isn’t quite willing to take it up to the next step. Simon’s story will be told next in book two-TEASING THE BOSS.

TEACHING THE BOSS is a fast paced story of forbidden romance between employer and employee, corporate take over and espionage, and a look at the dysfunctional family dynamics between Donald and Samuel Hunt. I did have a few concerns as it pertained to the reality of several situations including business dealings and takeovers which where mostly glossed over; and April’s access to important documents and files. As well, the relationship between April, Annabelle and Sam was a little disconcerting under the circumstances and what had transpired years before.

TEACHING THE BOSS has a little bit of everything; $ex and romance; betrayal and heartbreak; mystery and suspense. The characters are an interesting mix of good vs evil; the romance is passionate and ends with a happily ever after. TEACHING THE BOSS is a delightful and enjoyable read from Mallory Crowe.

4.5 stars

This is the best book I've read in a while. I loved the characters. They were well developed. Neither were perfect, but that was okay because they had enough redeeming qualities to make them likable.

There were some things in this book I didn't expect, including the set up for the second book in the series which I plan to check out in the not too distant future. It was a fairly long book but I never felt as if it was dragging. In fact, I didn't want the book to end. I would have been happy if April and Sam's story would have continued on.

So why 4.5 stars and not 5? There was one issue I had with the book. It's a personal thing and to some it wouldn't matter in the slightest, but it's a bit of a pet peeve for me. Not once did the author mention birth control throughout the book. There was no mention of condoms, using them or not, or even of April being on the pill. The entire conversation was non existent. In a modern day romance, I think this is something that needs to be addressed.

Will it keep me from reading the next book in this series? Heck no!

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good office romance.

April has worked as an administrative assistant for Sam for 6 years. She knows him very well and the two has a great working relationship. April also has a secret admiration for the man but it's one sided. Sam starts to date another girl who after a couple of weeks starts to feel threatened by April's important presence in Sam's life. She asks him to fire her. April overhears this conversation and decides to quit working for him. When Sam loses her he starts to know how important she is to him..

There's another plot going on there of Sam's dad trying to bring his son's second company down after he destroyed his first and ruined his marriage by seducing his fiancée. That man is shameless! Anyways, April plays a major role is resolving that conflict.

The relationship between Sam and April reminded me of a favorite tv not-yet-couple

They have the same natural chemistry even though April was a bit too demanding by the end of the book. I felt Sam needed more exploration and the little of his past that was revealed was intriguing.

Overall, I felt this could have been better.. but it still has it's good moments.

Nice tale of college student April who who pines for her workaholic boss Sam. The question to be answered is whether she could ever be more important than Samual Hunt's business. Here we watch Sam's mild disinterest morph into something much more. Even though the love affair and affection seemed one sided for a majority of the story. The male. lead does redeem himself by the end of the story. For my fellow angsty love triangle lovers, there's a good dose here. An added bonus is that we get an introduced to Simon who is featured in the next installment. Overall 3.5

The first book in the Billionaires in the City series by Mallory Crowe. Billionaire Sam Hunt is dating a model, Oksana, who thinks Sam should get rid of his administrative assistant, April Morgan. But April has been with him for years and he doesn't want to. But when April discovers he is even thinking about it, she quits. Then Sam's father hires April to work in his company.

I read Mallory Crowe's Devereaux Billionaires series before this one. I enjoyed that series. I found that I had this book already so I decided to go ahead and read it. It wasn't as good in my opinion but it wasn't too bad. I will read more by this author.

This is a romance mixed with corporate espionage, mixed with repairing familial relationships. Standalone. Apparently there's a prequel, but this was strange enough.

April has been working for young billionaire Sam Hunt for 6 years helping him to build his business, and she's also attending college. She's essentially his girl Friday, and doesn't really notice her beyond a professional relationship. Then one day Sam's GF Oksana encourages him to fire April, or relocate her. April overhears the conversation, and rightfully flips out and leaves the company, right when he's supposed to take the company IPO. After April leaves, Sam figures out that he doesn't want to lose her (but in what way?). Sam's also got Daddy issues which are strange in their own right especially when the day after she walks out, Dad offers April a job at his own company. Strange.

Also strange, April is best friends with Annabelle, who is paralyzed.... from an accident that Sam caused because he was drunk. Say what now? Annabelle's mother, of course, still won't forgive Sam.... and the characters seem to find this strange?? Of all of this, that's the LEAST strange thing of all!

Then the character of Oksana was strange -- starts out as an enemy, isn't really more than just arm candy to Sam, and then becomes April's pseudo ally?? We don't get to know her enough to figure out what's truth and what's fiction with that one. We learn who the mole is, but it's like one sentence in the book and there's no real resolution to that -- again, strange, because we don't understand the motive.

This book had a lot of interesting elements, but they just weren't woven together in a way that made sense for me.

BOOK CHICK REVIEW

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review through Netgalley.

I became interested in this book through the intriguing cover. It wasn't a bad read, the author did a decent enough job to keep the reader interested. However, I felt the book was lacking something about half way through. From then on, the book wasn't as interesting.

I liked the characters, and enjoyed the banter between Sam and April. I did get really annoyed by how they went from happy couple to hating each other and breaking up. I get very frustrated when authors make the characters break up because it feels as if they need some sort of drama in the book.

I often got confused on whose point of view it was because there was no indication, no big name highlighted at the top of the chapter. Just when I thought the chapters went back and forth between the characters, two chapters would be from the same characters, or half way through a chapter it would switch point of view.

I really enjoyed the ending, April's graduation. I can't say that it would happen in real life but it was be amazing if it did. The authors story was interesting enough and the book is short, making it a fast and easy read. I'm excited for the second book, being Simon's book, which is very exciting.

I liked this story, but if I'm totally honest April seemed a little too sweet to feel realistic. The whole story just had this rosy edge to it that seemed unrealistic and I didn't really feel like I knew any of the characters well enough to feel invested in them. Also its not actually clear what April's actual position in the company is. There's a huge difference between finance and marketing and all the other departments in a business. They're not just uniform one size fits all. Someone with an accounting degree probably isn't an ideal candidate for the HR department etc etc. So I think that was part of what led to the lack of a realistic feel to the story. Nothing was pinpointed enough to really explain what all these people did because I don't feel like the author bothered to research what goes on inside a business. Also everyone is just too forgiving and perfect to feel any sense of realism. It's not a bad story, it's just not a great one either.

Teaching the Boss by Mallory Crowe
Purchased: Free on Kindle Books
My Rating: 2 of 5 Stars

Some Spoilers!

What's it all about?
Assistant fall for boss, boss is oblivious, boss falls for girl, boss can’t have girl, boss and girl end up together. ‘Teaching the Boss’ is a semi typical romance novel and follows all the parallels, but when April and Sam are introduced the difference is that April isn’t just his assistant, but his friend and the one who helped him build his company. April and Sam’s relationship seems complicated, but they are the only ones that complicate it. Sam’s wealth and company is what drives him every day, but the one to keep him on track is April. April has kept all of Sam’s secrets and has always kept her feelings a secret, so when the chance aries for them to be together, they both seem to falter at the subject. Can these two lover birds conquer their butting heads and dominating personalities?

The Best Parts:
The sex scenes were by far my favorite parts written in this book. They were full of great details and tension. They weren’t rushed or too slow. Most everything that happened before April quit working for same was great, and after she quit it kind of all jumbled up. I liked that she grew a back bone, even if it meant working for Sam’s father, but she ran right back to Sam. I wished April would have had more time to find herself without the help of Sam, but even Donald knew at the end of it that they can’t be separated by anything.

The Worst Parts:
For a romance novel there was very little romance. There was definitely a plot line, but the sex and tension seemed to be put on a back burner, or when the actually plot got to complicated we were distracted by a quicky. Also the tension between Sam and Donald seemed to resolved very quickly. Sam seemed too much of a hot head to want to resolve things with his father, or that April could have the courage to stand up to Sam and Donald simultaneously and that Donald would listen. It seemed like everything was almost too perfect in this novel. There wasn’t any true worry to April and Sam’s relationship which caused it to seem unrelateable.

Final thoughts ...
I have to admit I lost interest i11n this novel to the point where I stopped reading it for a few weeks and finished 3 other books in between finishing it now. It definitely kept my attention most of the time, but I don’t know what clicked in my head that I was just over it. I finished just to finish it, not because I needed to know how it ended, but because I was tired of my kindle showing I still had some left to read.

Narration gave me a movie like quality . . .
Overall 4 out of 5 stars
Performance 4 out of 5 stars
Story 4 out of 5 stars

Reid Kerr did an excellent job with narrating this short romance with drama and some intensity. I found the audio to be smooth, clear, and contained variety with diction, tone, and cadence.

April Morgan's comes back to town and he wants reservation for him and his new girlfriend, he not clear on not firing her, bullied in to moving her, finds that he has not really seen her for her, losses her, then kisses her. Sam finds that he has missed a lot of what he truly had. He allowed someone push him to do something he did not want to do. April hears it all and make a decision for herself. Father son have a falling out and April becomes a pawn in their tug of war.

I'm just going to jump right in here. Sam owned his own business. April was his assistant. She'd been with him six years so she knew him well, had been there for him through good times and bad. She knows the man, knows his character, so when his supermodel girlfriend demands he get rid of her, April can't believe he doesn't outright refuse. She is listening inadvertently to the conversation as Sam forgot to close the door. When he sees she's there, he rushes to make amends. In tears, she tells him off then quits her job and leaves. She's surprised therefore, the next day when Sam's dad shows up on her doorstep and offers her a position with his company. Although Sam and his father have been at odds for years, April doesn't know all the details of their falling out. Still, going to work for her former boss's closest relative seems like a betrayal somehow. Even so, what is she to do? She has to pay the rent and working for Mr. Hunt will all but guarantee she won't be running into Sam. She accepts the job but a few weeks later learns her boss is going to make a play against Sam's company. Between a rock and a hard place, she sends Sam a vague warning, one he doesn't heed and he ends up losing a majority of his company stock to his father. From that point on, the gloves come off. I loved April and Sam's budding relationship, loved the way April tried to fix things between the two men, and I liked the many little twists to the plot that kept you guessing at what would happen. This was my first time reading this author but it won't be the last. Her work was very entertaining, which is my sole reason for reading it in the first place.

Another book set in the world of Big Business. On the Asset side - this is capably written, and doesn't suffer from plot overload. The Hero is an over-confident alpha, the heroine his long-suffering PA, who cuts him no slack at all - one of the best things about the book are her put-downs.

I'm marking this right down though for two reasons -
1. the plot depends on the hero's Evil Father sneakily buying out the external shareholders in the hero's company, thus giving the E.F. control. [Mwahahahah etc.] But there's a perfectly common legal defence to this, called "pre-emption rights" (giving existing shareholders the right to first refusal on shares for sale); there is absolutely no excuse for the hero not having a pre-emption rights clause in his company's set-up. That may sound a petty point, but in the same way that one expects a Regency romance to get period details right, I expect a Big Business story not to ignore basic facts for the plot.
2. Can anyone else hear the sound of realistic characterisation disappearing down the plug hole?

So, for me, this is a bit writing by numbers, and I struggled to finish it.

I kind of liked this book but the author should really have followed the rule of writing about what you know.

On the plus side it was an easy fun read for when you're looking for something not too challenging and there is a bit of heat between the two main characters Sam and April. Generally the story ticks along quite nicely.

However on the downside I get the impression the author knows next to nothing about business or finance. This makes writing a book about corporate espionage and the business world in general a bit of a mistake. Obviously the author tries and there is the odd word thrown in here or there to try to make it sound believable but anyone with even a basic knowledge would see through it. Finding and photocopying invoices for example is not the important issue it's made out to be. It's a low level admin job and April is not doing the accountants job and saving the company by doing it.

Unfortunately this lack of knowledge makes the plot a bit ludicrous but if you ignore reality it's an ok read.

April has been half in love with her boss for six years. It's only once she quits that her boss, Sam, realises he can't live without her in his life - professionally and personally.

This book had all the elements for a great read but just fell a little short for me. April is shown to be the loving, caring, epic and awesome assistant who is more than just an employee. But as devoted as she seems to be to Sam and his company, it doesn't take much for her to jump ship. And not only leaving Sam's business but diving head first into working for Sam's number one nemesis.

And same is kind of a wet fish. He never notices April until someone else points out how attractive she is. And then he goes after her but it felt like he was doing it so that his business rival couldn't have her. I wanted more passion because of who she was and not just what she represented to him.

Whilst not liking either of the leads, this book is well written and I liked how the author wrote the steamier scenes. I just didn't care too much for the outcome considering I didn't like the characters.

Free Amazon read. Having read a lot of Harlequin romances in my day, I knew what I was getting into here, and there were some strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: April was a really strong woman, very smart, and with a few minor exceptions, she listened to her own instincts and took matters into her own hands when needed. I don't know if I thought Sam really deserved her, honestly. He seemed fairly weak (the beginning with Oksana... Yuck!), and prone to being very wishy-washy. After finding out the real reason he quit drinking, to see him go to pieces as easily as he did-- after April warned him to be on guard-- was really inexcusable. He did seem very charming and sweet, at times, but he also made some boneheaded decisions. I liked this book; I would read another by this author.

3.5 stars. Short and cute. It starts off with a very common trope: rich boss who sleeps with gorgeous bitchy models doesn't notice his (formerly frumpy) secretary who has been there with him and supported him (while secretly being infatuated won't him).

There is a little more depth than usual, but the book is mostly undeveloped. There are many interesting supporting characters, but they're undeveloped. The h's best friends, the H's OW, Simon, the H's father.

Even the H and h's relationship is not very fleshed out.

But I still enjoyed it because at least it avoided some of the usual misunderstandings and stupidities. The h wasn't TSTL, and there wasnt a ton of jealousy.

Good enough to make me check out book 2.

3.5* I have mixed feelings about this book, there were parts I enjoyed and other parts not so much. Which is one reason it took me nearly a week to read, the other being I never felt very invested in April and Sam as a couple. So spent most of the time wondering why April just didn't walk away and never look back, but there were a few moments when I got the attraction, and enjoyed the story especially when the working relationship morphed into a personal one.

Easy read once you get into the book for awhile.

This book was hard to put down once it got going and I enjoyed it because it was family oriented and even families sometime fight it shows blood is thicker than water. Also, proves to show behind every successful man stands a good woman.
