Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments I like to read my audiobooks in order of purchase. But, I'm tired of going to MyBooks and sorting the list each time I'm ready to read a new book.

I've since decided I need to do that with my home library and ebooks just to get the dust off them.

Then there's Toppler planning. So I think I'm just going to use this to make some lists.

I just looked at the book page, and I see I have you indicated as the person who recommended it to me. :)

message 10: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments wow, that's a list. Do you do most of your reading in audio books, Janice?

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments About 50/50. Still have to add my books & ebooks lists - there's about 180 of them. Groan!

message 12: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Wow! nice looong lists! ;)

message 13: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Wow Janice, that is quite a list!

I think I also have about 180 books, some hardcopy, most on my ereader. On the one hand it's exciting that I still have so many books to read that I'm looking forward to, on the other hand I feel a bit overwhelmed in that I can only read about 70 books a year, and that my owned books will continue to grow with the hundreds of books on my tbr ;-)

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments It is overwhelming. I was shocked once I had all the audiobooks, books & ebooks listed and wondered why I keep buying more. It's an addiction!

message 15: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments Oh dear! Amazon.ca had the first 8 books in the In Death series. I already have the first 3, so picked up 4-8 which cost me $10.45. Then I popped over to audible.com and got the whispersync deals of $.99 each ($4.95).

I can't decide if I should keep updating my lists for new acquisitions, or pretend the lists aren't growing. They're supposed to be shrinking.

I'll think about it and come back.

message 16: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Hahaha. That must have taken long, Janice. I think adding to the lists will be more organized and might put you off buying for a while.

message 17: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Well, if you list them here, someone who sees them might add them to their lists, and then yours won't be the only ones going in the opposite direction...

message 18: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments Pragya, that strategy didn't work today. I bought 5 books this morning in spite of my slapping my wrists after I finished my lists.

Sandra, so true! This group has definitely enabled my addiction.

I should probably keep the lists up to date. Decision made.

message 19: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Uh oh. Well, maybe someday. :p

message 20: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments I'm feeling pretty good about my progress.

I've abandoned one and it Dreaming the Eagle doesn't pick up tonight, I may drop it too. I've been reading it for 3 nights now and keep falling asleep. I don't think I've hit the 50 page mark yet. Maybe it's just slow getting started.

message 21: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It looks very structured, with everything in order of acquisition and reading. I'm impressed!

message 22: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments Thanks Peggy. I've got to start going back and reading the books in order of acquisition, or some of the books will never get read.

message 23: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol, that must be confronting. At least I can pretend I'm not buying so many books ;-)

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments I just added another audiobook - The Bird Eater. I picked it up on a whispersync deal - 2.49 + 1.99.

I do tend to read more audiobooks that print books lately.

If I could, I'd have all my books be audio.

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Feb 20, 2015 12:16PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments It's getting that way for me, too. Some books don't lend themselves well to audiobook. Either the narrator is a wash, or the style of the book doesn't work for me. For example, I think I would have been really confused listening to Life After Life.

I disliked Roy Dotrice's rendition of A Game of Thrones so much, that I will be reading the trade paperbacks for the rest of the series. As a reviewer said, he made everyone sound like an old man. For me, it was also the slurps, and slobbers that kind of turned me off. Yet... some of his voices were perfect. Like for King Robert. Oh, and I loved his voice for Tyrion. But Arya and Sansa? Not so much.

message 30: by Cherie (last edited Feb 20, 2015 08:13PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments After starting to read Life after Life, I am sure it would have been very confusing to listen to it on audio book. I had it book marked on my Overdrive account but I was still three patrons away from being able to borrow it, so I got the ebook, which was available. I thought I had a print copy, but I searched my whole house the other day and could not find it. Amy said it was on our Nook account, but it would not download to my tablet for some reason. Maybe Becky has it, but it was too late to call her and by then, I didn't care. Story of my life.

I am still here at work, catching up on work and reading the posts on GR. My granddaughter has a friend spending the night and I didn't feel like going home and listening to them talk and giggle. I guess I will go and have dinner and read my Nook before I go home.

message 31: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, and I was going to comment on your lists. WOW!

message 32: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments Sometimes it's fun to listen to the talk and giggles. Other times, a quiet dinner with the Nook is more appealing.

My lists overwhelm me too. I just decided I'm going to give myself permission to be more willing to abandon, or I'll never get through them all.

message 33: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments Janice wrote: "...My lists overwhelm me too. I just decided I'm going to give myself permission to be more willing to abandon, or I'll never get through them all. ..."

I have a difficult time with abandoning books as well. I just keep thinking something has to improve. YLTO! members are beginning to convince me. There is just not enough time even to read all of the "good" books.

message 34: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments I was right in the middle of typing a response to you Almeta when "boom! boom! Out go the lights!" The power is back on, but do I remember? LOL!

I know the feeling. I was determined to read Dreaming the Eagle. I keep thinking that once I get into, I'll really like it. But, I've wasted 4 evenings trying to read this book when I could have been reading something else. When do I pull the plug?

I could have pulled the plug on The Son, but I love Nesbo and the reviews say this book is as good as the Harry Hole series. So I've pushed myself and I'm starting to get into it, and I'll go the distance with this one. (Just realized that the son was a boxer. Hehehe.)

So, I'm bailing on one, and persevering with the other. And yet, if only.... LOL! Overthinking it!

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments Hmmmm, I'm not doing so well. The idea was to read from the top of the lists. I seem to be reading all over the lists. Lately, it's been from the bottom. The next two books I start will be bottom feeders. Today, I will start One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd, and as soon as I finish my current audiobook, I will start The Secret Place.

I'm jumping around a bit also! I think that I've decided to pick a couple from each category, just to keep the variety. Which means, I probably won't complete a single one!☻

The Secret Place is a great book with which to kill a series!☺

I'm glad to hear it. I thought Broken Harbour was a bit convoluted. It didn't seem like much of a motive. But then, today life was imitating art. I'm tired and cranky, (view spoiler)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I listened to One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd and it was a 5 star book for me. I cried during parts of it, I got so emotionally attached.

message 41: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments I started it last night but didn't get much further than the intro and prologue. I was really struck by how the white man called the Indians "savages". They had such a well defined system of manners and thought the white man didn't know how to behave, which they didn't. It makes me wonder who the savages were. I'm looking forward to the story.

I have two lists I'm working from (not including my series) and I'm finding I'm getting through one quicker than the other . I guess as long as you are working through at least one of them then that's a good thing.
