I saw your review. I have some of his Maigret books but I decided to read a few more of his stand-alone roman noirs before tackling the Maigret series. Engagement seemed like a good choice. I got the Penguin Classic edition.

My 4 star review.

Finished Queenpin by Megan Abbott. Reminded me of 40s noir with gender roles reversed. However it is very generic. Rating - 3/5

Stephanie Plum #4, OK to read as a stand-alone. Very entertaining light comic mystery in the Plum series. Drag queens, fingers getting chopped off, and a sex scene narrated by Stephanie in the first person....what's not to like? 4 stars.

Brady Coyne #2, OK to read as a stand-alone. Enjoyable mystery revolving around the search for a rare stamp. I like this series and I enjoyed this early entry (1984) but I was able to figure out the villain about half way through. 3 stars.

The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy
Rating: 4 stars

and I started reading:

Swag by Elmore Leonard
Also, as part of a group read, I started (and am already about halfway through):

The Bad Seed by William March

The Bad Seed was a strange, fascinating book.

Very late last night I finished The Big Nowhere, and then proceeded to stay wide awake because of it. The novel is darker than dark and extremely bleak, but that makes it sound bad when it's actually amazingly good. I'm taking a break from Ellroy for a few days to restore my mental health but then it's on to L.A. Confidential.

A strange malady called Dragonscale causes people to spontaneously combust, leading to a pandemic and all sorts of trouble.
Very good story. 4 stars

I'm enjoying it so far. It must have been really far out there when it was first published in the 1950s.

Now I can't wait to read it!
Have you read Clandestine? I understand it's got some supporting characters that also appear in the LA Quartet. I was wondering how it stacks up.

Years ago, so the details have sort of faded. But I'll get around to it again ...just dug out all of my Ellroy novels (which I think are the entire oeuvre), put them in a stack and moved them to the front of the shelf.
I will say that Dudley Smith is likely at or very near the the top of my imaginary "despicable fictional characters" list.

This is the only Mickey Dolan mystery and that's a shame. This is a dynamite book, full of wonderful characters and with a plot that just carried me along for the ride. 4 stars, highly recommended.

Finished A Drop of the Hard Stuff by Lawrence Block. Last full length novel in the Scudder series. Rating - 3/5

All the talk of Simenon made me want to read him again, so it's The Grand Banks Café for me, starting later today. I'm also reading A Furious Sky: The Five-Hundred-Year History of America's Hurricanes by Eric Jay Dolin while hoping we miss the worst of hurricane season here.
Yesterday I finished an excellent novel from the 1940s (not crime) called Lucifer and the Child which kept me guessing all the way through and gutted me at the end.
