McKensie and Lara II :)
Stefan could smell the ocean in a distance and hear the soothing whisper of the waves "we'll be there in an hour or two..." He said quietly and sighed, would she ever come back on land or was he going to lose his friend and confidante. He promised he'd build his house on the beach and he was going to keep it.Drina sighed lightly, she grabbed an oil lamp and lit it bringing light into the shadows. She sat on a barrel trying not to look at him but really what else was there to? She cleared her throat and looked around at the stock "rum and food...we won't starve..."
Charlotte nodded, smiling a little. There was no denying it. She longed to have a tail again, to see the vast oceans. But a part of her was tugged towards the shore, to stay with Stefan. She didn't know what she had been hoping before. Maybe that he would be able to join her in the water somehow... but who was she kidding? Fire and water were never meant to go together. "I'm glad." Was all she said, keeping silent for the rest of the walk. Jay nodded, looking around as well. The food and rum was a good thing. Not that surviving on rum was a good idea, but it was better than nothing... "Good." He agreed, his eyes falling on old canvas used for sails. "And we can make that into some sort of bed." he suggested.
Stefan wanted to stop, to make it so they'd never reach it. He looked at the light in her eyes though and that smile...she needed to go home, and who was he to stop that? He sighed lightly "maybe we could schedule visits, by where the moon is. Definitely not full moon...but what if on every new moon we meet up?..." Drina nodded and smiled "good thinking." She opened a crate and a chicken fluttered out like a maniac, she hit it over the head and sighed in relief. "We could fill part of the canvas with feathers? Make it soft...I think that's what the wealthy do..." She picked up the bird by the neck and grimaced.
Charlotte turned and smiled then, as they just stepped out on the sand. She nodded. "I'd like that." She agreed. She looked out at the water, feeling its strong pull on her soul. Turning back to face Stefan, she swiftly hugged him tight. "Thank you." She whispered. "For everything." Then she was bounding towards the water to hide the tears in her eyes. She pulled off the too large circus clothing just as she leaped in. The water engulfed her, filling her lungs. Unlike the painful change into a human, the reverse was swift and felt lovely. She sighed as her legs once again morphed into her glimmering tail, and she shot to the surface, turning to wave at Stefan back on the shore. Jay nodded. "Doubt the feathers of one bird will make it soft enough to be a bed, but we can make use of whatever we can find." He promised. Taking the chicken from her, he killed it and started to pluck the bird.
Stefan felt terror as the waves got closer he stepped back and watched as she dove in. He felt an overwhelming sadness and swallowed picking up the clothes thrown to the side and put it in his knapsack. He tried to smile and waved as she disappeared the sun gleaming off her tail. She was free, but why couldn't he feel happy for her? Time to move on and chop wood for his new house.Drina nodded and opened the only porthole window. She whispered a spell and sea birds flocked in by the swarm "would this be enough?" She teased and started to hit all of the birds on the head "ah! Get them!"
Charlotte smiled a little when he waved back, and then dove back under the water. It was cold and clear, just like she remembered. Fish swam happily around her, as if welcoming back a long lost friend, and she danced with them, but still, as the days passed, she longed for the time to draw near when she would go ashore again and meet Stefan. Finally, the day came, and she gathered up her sack of fish, crabs, lobster, and other assorted treats she had hunted as promised for him. Pulling the sack towards the shore, she smiled in excitement, a little nervous. Would he still want to see her? Would he miss her? She grew closer to shore and dragged the bag into the shallows, tossing it ahead of her, before flipping her tail and crawling as best as she could towards the shore. Jay swore and laughed. "Yes I suppose so." He agreed, helping her kill a good number of the birds. Magic could definitely come in handy at times. They would have enough feathers now to make a cloud to sleep on...
Stefan had finished with his beautiful beach house and was waiting on the cliffs, it was finally time. The sun was setting and he saw her silhouette against the waves "Char?..." He called out eagerly, it had been so long and his heart longed for her he wanted to let her know how he felt.Drina giggled and started to pluck the feathers "it will be so comfortable...and we have meat for awhile! Maybe this won't be so bad!...I could cause a storm to make the crew sick!"
Char propped herself up on her elbows and looked to the cliffs. She raised an arm and waved. "Hi!" She called, digging her hands into the sand to pull her body slowly through the shallow water and onto the shore. By the time she was actually lying on dry sand, she was panting from the struggle of pulling herself and the bag onto the beach. Jay nodded, smiling a little. "Yes. It wont be so bad." He agreed. "However, I don't think you should make the crew sick... I want to get off this bloody vessel as soon as possible." He said, tossing the birds he had already plucked into a pile.
Stefan ran to her and held her to his chest "I created a swimming pool, so you never have to feel that pain of growing legs..." He led her to his place and carefully lowered her into it. He took her bag and smiled "these look great! I only know what about half of them are!" He admitted, but he was so excited to see her he didn't even care.Drina gave a half smile, she was sewing up the sides of the canvas and shrugged "well, make them able to steer but utterly be miserable doing it?" She watched him pluck the feathers and a thought came to her "Are you from Anerica?...you reacted very surprised when I mentioned it."
Charlotte smiled, happy that he had put so much effort into getting a place ready for her. It warmed her heart more than anything could have. She did miss him so. She swam a circle around his pool once, before surfacing and resting her elbows on the edge of it. "Thank you." She said, smiling. "The food in there will make a great stew." She said, then she motioned for him to bring the bag to her. "And I brought something else for you..."Jay nodded, agreeing to that. He finished plucking the birds and started to stuff the canvas with their feathers. He nodded again, slowly. "I am." He agreed, not looking at her. He wasn't sure how happy he was about being American anymore.
Stefan chuckled and sat by the water allowing his legs to dangle in the water "I'll make some gumbo tonight how about that?" He lifted the bag to her and raised a brow "oh did you? I thought I'd be the only one giving gifts!" He held out a handcrafted wood box. Inside was a locket he made and engraved with her name and his birthmark symbol.Drina tilted her head to look at him "why'd you come here?...shouldn't you be happy to go back? What's it like?...would I have any chance on starting a life?"
Charlotte smiled. "That would be lovely." She agreed. "I haven't had anything cooked in a long while..." She admitted. When he handed her a box, she gasped. "You don't mean... Its for me?" She asked, opening it, and gasping. "Oh..." She said, melting inside. "It's gorgeous." she said, clasping it around her neck. "Thank you." she said, grabbing her bag. She rummaged around inside and pulled out another necklace. On it, hung a single black pearl. "This... this might be able to keep your flame from going out, if you ever wanted to get in the water again." She said softly. "And... there is another way that I can make it so you could breathe, if you would let me." She offered, blushing a little. As it was a mermaid's kiss that would make a man breathe under water. Jay shook his head. "My men were slaughtered. If I am found, back in America, I would be too... for abandoning the mission I was on." He said, sighing. Then he shrugged. "A lot cooler than where you're from. Lots more trees, and a lot more buildings. You could start a life there. As long as no one found out you were a witch."
Stefan was amazed at the simple exotic beauty of the pearl. He fingered it lightly and strung it around his neck "I'll try anything." He said honestly and ran his thumb against her cheek "I want to see your world, I trust you to not let me die..."Drina looked at him shocked and put her hand on his arm "you have to hide...or take a ship somewhere else! I don't save your skin for you to lose it again..." She let go realizing she was touching his warm skin. She sat back continuing to sew the canvas "are there any witches in America?"
Charlotte nodded, swallowing nervously. She raised her hand up and covered his with it. Moving closer hesitantly, she looked at him for a moment, before closing the distance and kissing him gently. It was brief, but it sent the heat flooding to her cheeks. When she pulled away, she smiled sheepishly, moving a little further into the pool and holding out her arms. "We should try it here, where I can get you out again quickly if it doesn't work. Do you trust me?"Jay sighed and shook his head. "I suppose I deserve it. There's no point in running. An identity isn't something you can hide from." He finished stuffing the canvas with feathers, and looked at her. "There are, I suppose. But I never knew of them."
Stefan cupped her face wishing to elongate the softness and warmth of her kiss. He nodded and pushed into the water and held onto her so he would go under. It was still so shocking to him, the water covering him but her eyes kept him locked in. He leaned his forehead against hers and smiled lightly "so...I can't wait weeks to see you again..."Drina frowned and shook her head "I can erase memories, you wouldn't exist in their minds...I can't let you die, it isn't right..." She said softly and pat the cushion "this is the softest thing I have ever felt..." She said almost in awe.
Char held him tight against him, just like she had long ago. Luckily, he had no wounds this time. "Maybe you don't have to..." She whispered, still supporting his head above water. "Do you feel ok?" She asked hopefully, wondering if his flame was protected by the spell infused in the pearl. "Are you ready to try going all the way under?"Jay sighed, wondering to himself why she would care so much... after what he had done to her. It was beyond him. But he was thankful. "I don't know." he huffed, and then came over, sitting on their mattress. "It's a thing of beauty. And I think I'm going to put it to good use." He said, laying down on one side of it. "Come join me. You could probably use the rest as well."
Stefan nodded and cupped her face and kissed her deeply, they sunk into the water. His initial reaction was panic but then it was peace, he trusted her and slowly opened his eyes amazed at the blurry view of her. He smiled against her lips even more infatuated with her beauty.Drina hesitated but then crawled onto the small mattress and breathed out her stressed sore body relaxing. She sat up quickly "this is far too good for me..." She felt guilty and sat back on the barrel and looked out at the ocean.
Charlotte closed her eyes as he kissed her again, and they both sunk below the water. Her heart was fluttering out of control as she felt the familiar sensation of the water enveloping her like a friend once more. She opened her eyes and smiled at Stefan, thrilled that it was working. She grinned. Clasping her hands together in excitement. "You are ready, Stefan, to see the ocean, if you wish." She said, taking his hand. Jay watched her get up again and he frowned, understanding the guilt she felt. "Hey. I know what that's like. But you really should come rest here. That way we can better defend ourselves should the pirates try to break in down here..." He said, trying to reason with her.
Stefan surfaced and coughed lightly "of course I want to, but I want to learn how to swim first...I don't want to have to weigh you down. I need to be prepared, it still is giving me anxiety!"Drina swallowed and look at it with almost a coveted look, but she shook her head "I can't...I'm already being treated too kindly by you..." She said softly and coughed again feeling a chill.
Charlotte flushed red again. Of course he couldn't swim! She had been so excited about showing him her home, she had clean forgotten that important detail. "Right... sorry... getting a little ahead of myself I suppose..." She lead him to the side so he could hold on and hold himself up, and then she moved to the center of the pool. "Just kick your legs and move your arms like this." She showed him. "Don't worry about going under. That's all part of swimming."Jay stood, walking over to her. "Non sense." he said, taking her arm and gently guiding her back over to the mattress. "It's the least I can do after you saved my life." He said, guiding her down onto the mattress. "Besides. It will be easy to get a cold and get sick down here. We need to conserve our warmth as much as possible. You even more than me." He said seriously.
Stefan followed her lead and held his breath doggy paddling his way to her "like this?" He forgot to kick and he started to sink. He gasped up scared and panicked and held onto her "I'm sorry...I should be better then that."Drina swallowed and lay her head down and sighed closing her eyes, she felt his arm go around her and automatically snuggled into him "I'm not cold..." She was still trying to be prideful and independent, it was hard for her to have someone take care of her.
Charlotte held him tenderly, shaking her head. "You did brilliantly. Just remember to kick your legs." She reminded. "And dont be afraid of the water. It does not want to pull you down." She promised.Jay wrapped his arms around her to keep her warm. "Sure you're not." He said, smiling lightly. He could still feel her shivering against him. "Never the less... humor me, ok?"
Stefan swallowed and nodded kicking his legs and took a deep breath "my father would die of a heart attack if he saw me..." He chuckled, his birthmark was glowing bright red but he was still doing fine. "I guess this is how you feel on land..."Drina looked up at him and stuck out her tongue lightly as she coughed hard her chest convulsing. She found her breath and sighed "being this close to a man I think I should know a title more personal then 'Captain'" she whispered and coughed again.
Charlotte nodded. "Yeah it is kida how I felt." She agreed. She had felt clumsy and useless when she had first started walking... and now she was trying to help Stefan through the same struggle. "You're getting it though." She encouraged, leading him around the pool. "So your dad was an imp too?"Jay was worried about her coughing, but he smiled at her request. "Whyof course. Pardon my manners. My name is Jay. And yours?" He asked, standing to go to the rum barrels and grab a bottle. The rum would help warm her. "Have some." He urged, wrapping his arms around her again.
Stevan nodded and followed her starting to get the flow of the water "my mother was human...she didn't survive, fire imps can be very aggressive and my father had a horrible temper..."Drina slowly tipped the bottle into his mouth and coughed at the bitter taste "goodness...stronger then wine..." She said with a smile and leaned back into his chest "Drina...it is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance Jay..." She coughed again and sighed "maybe I'm a bit chilly..."
Char bit her lip. "I am sorry about that. Your mother I mean." She said softy, watching him swim around the pool. Her smile grew. "But I do think you have got it!" She exclaimed, clapping. "Can I show you the ocean now?" She pleaded. "Just for a short while.... then when we come back, I can dry out and help you make the gumbo." She offered.Jay laughed softly, taking the bottle from her for a swig. "Yes. It most certainly is." He agreed. "And it will keep you warm." Then he smiled. "Nice to meet you too, Drina." His smile was brief when she said she was chilly. He wrapped a spare bit of canvas over them and hugged her close. "Better?"
Stefan nodded and slowly lifted back to the side he held out his hand and picked her up carefully "hold on tightly darling." He loved the way the locket fell right between her cleavage. It felt like they connected and he wanted to be closer. He couldn't bear to be without her.Drina nodded and closed her eyes "mmmhmm..." Oh she was so comfortable and he smelled so musky and handsome. From a relationship that was so simple and cold now they were close, chest to chest and warm. She felt a rumbling cough and whimpered her chest starting to hurt.
Charlotte placed her hand in his and let him pull her up out of the pool. She leaned her head on his shoulder and wrapped her arms around his neck, holding on tight for the walk down to the water. She loved how theu trusted eachother. She trusted him out of the water, and he trusted her in it.When she coughed, Jay handed her the rum bottle again. "Drink, it will help, I promise." He said, hoping she would take his advice. She needed lots of liquid in her to cool her throat and calm that cough, that much heknew.
Stefan walked down the cliff side carefully remembering the first time he carried her as they clung on the cliff trying to escape, it felt like years ago. He carefully laid her down as a wave crashed on the shore and he smiled she was so exquisite and beautiful against the sea foam. He blinked realizing a problem, he would be weighed down by clothes...Drina smiled and tipped it back consuming more of the bitter drink. She coughed nearly bringing it back up but managed to fight the urge. She passed him the now almost half empty bottle "how do I know that you are not just getting me drunk?" She teased and snuggled back into his warmth.
When he lay her in the edge of the sea, charlotte smiled and flipped her tail to right herself, propping her body up on her hands. "Well come on then. What are you waiting for." She motioned to the waves. "They wont hurt you. I promise ill keep you safe" she said, letting her body slide a little further into the water. She had not thought of the problem of clothes.Jay laughed and drank some himself. Though it was not his intent, he said. "Maybe I am. You'll never know." He teased. He drank again and shook his head, leaning back on an elbow. "If there was clean fresh water available, I would have offered you that." He promised.
Stefan swallowed and bit at his lip, his face was slowly going crimson as he looked down at his clothes "I uh...don't have the scales to cover...well..." He had his shirt off but he knew his trousers would weigh him down. He sat on the sand next to her "ideas?"Drina smiled "it's very considerate of you..." She said softly, her shivers were getting more violent even as she tried to stay warm and do everything he said. She coughed again a more deep wet cough and whimpered the way her chest burned every time. She took the bottle back and drank another swig before he had to remind her.
Charlotte frowned in the second it took her to understand. Then she flushed brilliant red. "Uh...." she looked around. "Well you could rip those shorter, so they wouldnt be as heavy on you. Or you could just take them off...." she swallowed, getting redder by the second. "Or I could try to weave something from seakelp for you...."Jay pulled her against him once more when she started coughing, and he grimaced. She was sick, there was no doubt about that. But how could he help heal her? He had no medicine in this boat... no means for stopping the cough. "Rest Drina. Its the best thing for you now." He said seriously. Sleep was often a good medicine in itself.
Stefan swallowed trying to figure out his options, he had seen her in her...natural state. What would be the difference? He took a deep breath and pulled them off and cleared his throat not really knowing what to say "ready?" The quicker they could move past this moment the better.Drina was already feeling pretty tipsy, so his request wasn't that difficult. She lay on the mattress still curled to him and her eyes slowly closed allowing her weak body to rest.
Charlotte flushed and forced her eyes away, looking to the water. When she got over the awkwardness, she looked back at him, but was very careful to only look at his face. She held out her hand to him. "Come on then. Lets go." She said, giving him an encouraging smile as she moved to a depth that was about waist deep.Jay sighed in releif when she finally closed her eyes and rested. He could feel her slow breathing against him, and it let him relax. Maybe when she woke she would be more used to the temperatures on this ship, and so feeling a little better.
Stefan took her hand and felt the warm water crash over his skin, it felt nice and it was relieving that the water was a cover in this moment. He lightly splashed her and chuckled trying to remove all awkwardness "do you feel accomplished? You have me at your beckoning and calling." He moved deeper till he was chest deep still feeling confident that he could touch the sea floor.Drina awoke to darkness, she looked over and Jay was fast asleep snuggled closely. She touched his face lightly his warmth feeling wonderful against her frigid hand. She didn't feel cold anymore though, actually it was quite warm like noonday at home...she moved the canvas off trying to cool the fever that was spiking.
Charlotte laughed lightly and splashed him back. "Oh you dont want to start this...." she said, grinning. She led him a little deeper and shook her head. "It is never my goal to make you feel helpless. If you want to stop, just tell me." She said seriously. "I just want to show you my world." They were at shoulder height now.Jay woke up some time later because he was uncomfortably hot. Hr frowned, feeling Drina's forehead, and swore lightly. "Not good." He whispered, getting up. He wiped a rag aganst the ship wall to dampen it, and put it on her forehead.
Stefan shook his head "no..no I want to keep going" he assured and jumped as little fishes swam around him. He ducked his head under to look at them and was amazed at the colors and delicate nature. He had to come back for air though since he was holding his breath. He gasped but smiled at her "I want to see it all!"Drina moaned and leaned to his hand and the damp rag "are we back home?" She whispered thinking the heat was the desert sun again. With being drunk and the fever she really had no idea where she was or who she was with.
Charlotte giggled as the fish joined them. She was happy that her friends accepted him into the sea. "We can. Just remember. You can breathe the water. It's ok." She promised. She flipped her tail, pulling them into water where neither of them could touch. "Here we go." she warned, smiling. She put her arm around his waist and started to swim slowly, moving them both deeper and deeper through the water. Jay sighed and shook his head, his ever present worried frown not lessening. "No. You're on a ship. A ship to America. I'm Jay, remember?" He asked, hoping she was not going delusional. He wet the rag again and started to dab her face and neck to try and cool her down.
Stefan slowly let his breath out and bubbles came up, he was amazed how easy it was for him to breathe. He smiled at Charlotte her hair floating all around them as if it was alive itself. He watched the creatures slowly start to come out of their hiding places. He ran his fingers carefully against the bat rays who floated around them almost like body guards.Drina nodded her dark eyes on him "I remember..."she whispered softly and sighed "I think the cough has died down..." She was trying to find the positive of it all "how many days have we been out?"
Charlotte smiled as the fish grew bolder, coming to say hi to their new visitor. "This is Stefan." She told them, smiling at a sea turtle who came to swim circles around them. "Pretty, aren't they?" She asked Stefan. "And we aren't even in the depths yet. Just the shallows still." She started to pick up speed, pulling them a little quickly. "hold on tight." She said, putting his arms around her neck. Stretching her own in front of her, she took off at full speed down into the watery depths. Jay smiled lightly. "Yes, your cough has died down." he agreed. He got up and dampened the rag again, before coming back to her, continuing to try and low her temperature. "We slept for a night and a day. But you've had a fever for a good 12 hours now..."
Stefan did hang on thankfully as they zipped silently and stealthily through the waters. Passing colorful corals and other plant life, he chuckled when the long kelp tickled them. He had no idea this was all under the sea...he pressed his lips to her back and kissed her softly.Drina sighed tiredly "you need to rest and eat too...can't just watch over me, when witches get sick it's usually pretty drastic..." She felt so cold but yet still felt the burn inside it was a confusing sensation.
((getting off for a bit. Then I'll be back on.))Charlotte slowed when they reached the kelp forests, and she twisted here and there through the long stalks of seakelp. Two seals joined them, playing tag and Charlotte grinned, dashing along in the chase. She paused however when she felt Stefan kiss her gently. She turned to smile shyly back at him, before swimming out of the kelp forests and deeper into the water. She pointed then, at two large forms in the distance. Two humpback whales. Their eerie songs could be heard even from here.
Jay shook his head. "You need to stay alive, so I need to keep your fever down." He said seriously. He felt fine now, even though he hadn't really eaten in a while. But he was determined to help her get better before he helped himself.
Stefan loved playing with the seals, they were like puppies! He waved at them as they left the forest, he was astounded at the two looming shadows "they...won't eat us right?" He said nervously, he knew nothing about whales or really any creature.Drina reached over weakly and shoved a bright red apple into his mouth, she giggled at how ridiculous he looked "stop arguing...two of us sick would not be beneficial...eat some meat too."
Charlotte laughed lightly. "Of course not silly. They're just big sweathearts." she promised, swimming them closing. It was a whale and her calf, who were spinning around eachother. Charlotte smiled and grabbed the fin of the baby whale, hitching a ride. Jay's eyes widened in surprise and he shook his head, taking a bite. "Whatever you say your magesty." He teased. He got up and got some dried and salted meat for them. "Here. You're having some too or I'm not eating any." he said seriously, dropping a strip on her face, grinning.
Stefan allowed himself to let go of her and swam on his own petting the huge boulder like creature "hello there. I'm Stefan." He realized that there was nothing to fear down here, he always thought it was a dangerous and scary place but there were so many friendly creatures!Drina shook it off of her nose and leaned against him to sit up as she ate the delicious meat. She was feeling better, maybe it was her natural healing or maybe it was Jay's care who knows.
Charlotte smiled, proud of Stefan for swimming on his own. She stroked the whale calf and whispered to it as it sang happily and bumped Stefan with its nose. Charlotte let go of the baby calf as its mother coaxed it away to join their pod again. She waved and then swam over to Stefan. "What to see the place I have been staying the past couple weeks?" She asked. Jay waited for her to take a couple bites, before he ate his own piece slowly. As always, he was trying to make sure she would survive this trip. He knew he would feel responsible if she died.
Stefan waved goodbye to the mother and calf and nodded eagerly, her home was something he'd very much like to see. He wondered how she lived down here, even though he was fine and enjoying himself he couldn't live here.Drina smiled and watched him, she leaned back and sighed happily "so...why did you give up the title of Captain?...the war got worse when you left..."
Charlotte nodded and wrapped her arm around his waist again, speeding off towards the caves near the bottom of the sea. She lead him to the seaweed covered door and stopped. "Stay out here and let me make sure everything is neat inside. I'll call you in." She said, swimming past the seaweed. Jay sighed, shifting position. "My men died. And after that... our cause just didn't seem like pursuing. Not after... well.. what happened with you." He said, shrugging. "But its not a big deal really."

Jay had struggled against the girl, wanting to murder that pirate. Only when the trap door was shut and locked did he stop and relax, huffing. "It was the right thing to do." He said simply, and walked back into the murky depths of the ship, sitting down rather glumly in the shadows.
