McKensie and Lara II :)
Stefan groaned "I really didn't...I mean, that's...nice." He coughed "let me go get some clothes for you..." He went back to his pen and grabbed some red and yellow trousers and a tunic "here...they might be a bit big..."Drina shook her head "no...my stomach hurts, I really don't think I can hold anything..." She sighed and lay on the carpet again looking up at him. "Plus your rations are low as it is...why else would you go to the gypsies whenever you can?"
Char waited patiently, hoping her blush would die down a bit before he came back. She didn't feel so flustered anymore, when he brought her some brightly coloured clothes, but she still avoided looking directly at his face for fear of making eye contact. "Thanks." She said, slipping on the trousers, and then the tunic. They were big on her, but they still stayed on and she wasn't swimming in them. "They're perfect." She said gratefully, smiling. Jay raised an eyebrow, surprised by her perceptiveness. "Smart girl." He said, more of an observation than a compliment, but he said it none the less. "Well... I suppose all I can do for you then is to give you a couple water canteens and wish you luck." He said. "I suppose some gypsies would pick you up?"
Stefan nodded and smiled "they look nice on you, ready to start walking?" He took her waist again and smiled "move your leg forward and step down, then move your next leg ok?" He said helping her slowly "just go your speed..."Drina nodded and grabbed her things "yes, I'll be fine. Thank you." She moved past him and looked back "you can have your own opinion captain, might make a difference." She started towards the nearest caravan, two days away but it would be ok.
Char nodded, relying on him to keep her up, as she took her first wobbling step... and then another... and a few more... "Hey look, this isn't too hard." she said happily, walking a little faster, until she was moving at a normal pace around the elephant pen. She wasn't very graceful, not yet, but she was managing a sort of speed strut. Jay nodded, placing his hands on his desk, looking down at the plans there. "So long girl." He said softly, his smile brief as she left. When she did, his shoulders slumped a bit, whether it was in relaxation, or in regret, he was not sure. He figured his life would be more normal now, now that she was gone and back to her own people. What he did not know, was that it would be far from it. A band of thieves was drawing closer form the north. (I figured we could reverse their positions, to make it interesting. It would help them see more eye to eye if he was the one captured. XP))
Stefan smiled and let her go when she was completely focused on walking. She was walking without his assistance and he couldn't be prouder! "Char, you're walking on your own...and doing pretty well! You've learned all of this in one night you should feel very accomplished!"((Brilliant! So what should Drina do?))
Char beamed, stopping again. "I had a brilliant teacher." She said, looking down at her new legs wich were steadier. The world was starting to grow lighter though, darkness fading away as the morning approached. "Can I run now?" She asked hopefully, having her ueart set on it even though she probably couldnt. Not yet anyways. Her legs were still too young.((Maybe not come in yet. But the caravan could hear about him getting captured, and they're all happy about that. And she goes to check it out? Maybe she knows the people who get him? Idk. We could really go anywway with this.))
Stefan turned to see the sunrise and shook his head no "not yet, it would be damaging when your muscles aren't strong enough. But we are getting out of here!" He hoisted her onto his back and held onto her legs "hold on tightly!" He jumped through the hole in the canvas again and into the nearest tree, he looked around for the most inconspicuous way to leave the circus grounds. The thirds attacked at dawn, they destroyed all the paperwork in the desk and shredded up the map till there was nothing left. They tied up the captain gagging him and dragging him along the back of their stallions riding to their camp.
Some months had gone by and Drina was feeling strong again, she found her caravan and with her entire family together everything went back to as it should be. One night as they sat around the fire someone spoke of the captain being taken by the allied thieves. Drina was in shock and quickly went to her wagon. She didn't know what to do, he didn't deserve to be saved but he had helped her and let her go...what could she do?
Char nodded dissapointed that she couldnt run but she understood. He was probably right. She knew her muscles were weak, too weak to function well for a long period of time. When he scooped her up, she squeaked, wrapping her arms around his neck to hold on. Her heart pounded frantically. They were escaping! Now! If they were caught, that wouod probably be the death of them both. "The cliff!" She urdge, motioning to the small cliff like hill edge. "We could climb down it to escape." She suggested. Jay had been caught completely off guard when a bunch of black clad figures had jumped in his tent and held a knife to his throat, roughly ransacking the camp and binding him until he lost circulation in his hands and feet. He couldn't say anything as he was dragged along behind a group of black stallions until he was almost senseless from thirst and starvation and the constant beatings he received.
Stefan nodded "good call Char!" He whispered and snuck down the side of the cliff, he head people coming and hugged the wall not even daring to breathe. He looked down and shook his head "oi...vey!" Drina was feeling the guilt eat her alive as she heard the way the were treating him, and her people were glad? Was she really this heartless before? She had to come up with a plan. One of the thieves was her betrothed she would have the excuse to go see the camp.
Charlotte clung to his back as best as she could, hoping she wasn't too heavy for him. She sucked in her breath as she heard people approaching and didn't even dare to look down or move at all. She knew looking down would probably make her pass out, and that would be the death of her. Closing her eyes, she tried to stay silent as a man and women stood by the cliff, looking at the view for far too long, before turning away again. She sighed in relief. "Am I too heavy for you?" She asked, worried. They were on the side of a cliff face, after all. Jay could barely see by the time the thieves got to an oasis, and he was strapped to a tree. By last week, he had been too weak to walk anymore, and had been dragged along the dusty ground like a log, resulting in more wounds, and making him weaker still. He was granted only enough water to keep him alive, but little else. Jay sighed tiredly and closed his eyes, letting his abused body slump against the ropes.
Stefan smiled and shook his head "no, you are just fine." He promised and kept climbing down, being an imp it was easy for him to keep the balance he swung on a dangling vine and landed on the ground "phew..."Drina arrived and was greeted as family, she hitched up the horse and gasped seeing Jay. But she had to pretend that it didn't affect her, Jude her betrothed kissed her softly and smiled "I did it for you...he deserves to die." Drina shook her head "please no....let me talk to him!"
Char nodded, squeaking a little as he swung and then landed. "Well you certainly are good at this." She mumbled, amazed that he managed this all with someone on his back. She looked around then, when they reached the bottom, trying to figure out where they could go next. "What do we do now?" She asked, a little nervous about being out in the bright world, during the day, and not under water. It was all strange to her, and a little frightening. Jay had lost the will to live a while ago, having had it beaten burned and bashed out of him. He now thought it would be more merciful if someone just took a knife to his throat. Not being very aware of what was happening around him, he had no idea that the girl he had captured was here. If he had known, it wouldn't have made a difference either. He didn't expect her to help him.
Stefan smiled and let her down "there are some woods down yonder and it leads out to the sea, you can go back home in a couple of days!" He said picking up a stone and skipping it on the stream. Drina waited till everyone was asleep, she knelt by his body and gently removed the ropes from his wrist. She lifted his head and cleaned his face frowning "what did they do to you?..."
Charlotte smiled brightly at that thought. Crystal waters... clean clear, open water... and freedom. She could taste it already. But then her smile dissolved with another thought. "Where will you go?" She asked, worried about him. Jay felt the pressure in his raw wrists lessen and he slumped forwards, groaning softly. If he could speak with his long dry tongue, he would have expressed his surprise at her return, and then would have begged her to kill him. But he had neither the ability nor the energy to talk, so he didn't respond at all, other than a pained moan.
Stefan smiled "I want to start my own place, where no one can get to me...maybe find out what happened to my people..." He said wistfully and smiled "what about you?...are there lots of mer-folks?"Drina frowned and quickly poured the jug of water into his mouth and tilted his head back carefully "shh shh..." She comforted and started to clean out his wounds carefully with a special herbal pulp that would heal it quickly "I wo to let them hurt you...again." She promised and wrapped up his wounds with linen bandages.
Char nodded, relaxing a bit. At least he knew where he was going, what he was doing. It would be weird, saying goodbye to her only friend, but at least she knew he would be ok. Charlotte shook her head. "No. Not many. Parents lay an egg and leave it." She explained, shrugging. It was sad really, but just the way of things. "I've seen others before, but we usually keep to ourselves, so I'm used to being alone."Jay swallowed gratefully when she poured water down his throat, which eased the burning. He coughed feebly, and then swallowed again as she started washing and binding his wounds. He finally had enough strength to shake his head and push her hand away. There were way too many wounds covering his body for him to survive the blood loss. It would take her too long to bind him here, without others noticing her. "No." Was all he whispered. "K..." He coughed. "Kill me..."
Stefan frowned listening, he didn't want her to be alone...he cared about her. "I could build a cabin at the beach so that we could still see eachother all the time! If you get tired of being a mermaid you could stay with me."Drina looked at him in shock "no...you didn't kill me..." She whispered appalled he would even ask that of her. Manually doing it was taking too long, she took his hand in both of hers and closed her eyes whispering a spell. The symbols floated around in the air and into his body healing him. The wounds disappeared and he got a boost of energy. Drina was exhausted and fainted at his feet.
Char smiled brighter, loving that idea. "That sounds amazing." She said honestly, trying not to blush too hard. Now that she knew what it was like to have a friend, she didn't know if she would like being alone again very much. "But you... you can't stand water." She said softly, looking rather sad. Jay gasped and his eyes flew open, panting as he was so shocked. What had that been? He knew all too well. He shivered, a little weirded out, even though he knew he owed his life to her, and to magic. Sighing, he picked her up and gently carried her into the tent of the one he had seen her with, laying her down beside him. He watched her for a moment longer, before slipping back out into the night. He didn't belong here, and he had to get away before anyone woke up.
Stefan shrugged "I don't have to get into the water, just live by it. The cliffs by the moores would be nice..." He said and lifted her back on his back since he noticed she was getting tired. He smiled up at her "what do you think? Two freaks is more nice then being alone."Drina woke up the next morning a little shocked finding she was laying in the tent, she heard angry mutters and quickly walked out finding the captain gone. She smiled to herself glad that he had gotten away from this and was well enough to do so.
Char nodded, holding onto him tight, her head resting on his shoulder. She was tired. That much was certain. Her body was exhausted from all the excitement, and then standing for that long. She smiled and nodded a little. "Sounds great." She agreed, letting her eyes close. Jay had stolen two large canteens and the largest sack of food he could carry. He had been trudging through the scorching desert since then, without his hood to cover his face, but he was managing. He hoped he could find some sort of friendly civilization before his rations ran out.
Stefan smiled and kept walking, he didn't need sleep so he could see into the dark woods with his amber colored eyes. The night was still and he enjoyed that, the silence. They were free, it was pretty incredible and hard to take in...the owls hooted among the shadows and cracking of branches for the nocturnal hunters but they were safe and he was her guardian.((Now what? Haha it's hard to keep them together apparently!))
Char slept soundly for a couple hours, silent for the first few. But as time wore on, she started to mumble as her dreams changed. First it was incoherent, and then she was gasping things like "No please dont!" And, "I told you, I don't have anything to give!" And "Jason...Jason.... stop!" She whimpered a couple times in between, her delicate hands curling closed. ((lol yeah. They're both independant souls. We need something to keep them stuck together. Either literally (like shackles or a spell) or not, lol. Any ideas?"
Stefan frowned and let her go laying her on a soft bed of leaves, he shook her gently "Char?...hey wake up!" She looked so scared and her whole body was in a defensive position, who was Jason?((What if they are both captured by like pirates and on a ship to America?))
Charlotte gasped awake, immediately sobbing. She covered her face with her hands and curled into a tight ball on the leaves. The drream... it had been so real, almost as if it was happening all over again, her memories.((That would be cool :) def make them stuck together, lol))
Stefan was shocked to say the least, he crouched down near her and carefully picked her up and cradled her like a child. "Char...shh, it's alright it was but a dream you are safe...I am here." He whispered rubbing her back feeling her shake under his hand. He didn't know what to do, a crying female was definitely not something he had dealt with before.((Indeed! But how? Why capture the captain as well as a gypsy?))
Char slowly came back to reality, her crying deminishing. Finally it died down and she wiped her eyes, throwing her arms around his neck, her face buried againt him. "Im sorry." She whispered, her trembling slowly fading.((She could "get in the way" or they find out she has powers or sometging.))
Stefan stiffened she scared him there, he held her close to his chest and ran his fingers through her hair "shh don't worry..." He whispered softly, he pressed his lips to her hair on impulse and sighed "who's Jason?"A year had passed and the war had gotten worse, the gypsies had no rights whatsoever they had to surrender all of their food and rations to the soldiers. She never saw the captain again, not that she looked for him...much. They were forced into a slavery camp where they had to use their magic for everything to help the humans.
Charlotte was a little surprised by the feeling of his lips on her hair, but it wasn't an unwelcome feeling. When he asked who Jason was, she flinched and shook her head, sucking in a breath. "The..." She started, took a deep breath, and started again. "The only merman I ever knew, and the single person on this earth I would be glad about dying." She said, looking out into the forest. Jay had gotten to civilization, working on a warf, loading and unloading ships that came in and out. He dropped the title of Captain and lived a simple life of the common folk... for now. He saw a few crews that came and went, acting all proper around the officials, but talking pirate slang when they thought no one was looking. Jay knew better. He knew the good crew from the bad. One particular crew of this type was heading inland to one of the slave camps to pick up rations for their next journey. Jay knew it wasn't uncommon for one of the sailors to drag along a female for company during the next months of voyage.
Stefan frowned already feeling hatred for this merman. He took her hand and hooked his arm with hers bring it close "what did he do?...I'll spear him right through the back" he said angrily his hands heating up slightly.Drina was working hard, she looked up and saw a crew member come her way. He was handsome in a rugged way and he charmed her to the boat. She got thrown into the brig and the door slammed. She screamed banging the trap door "let me out!"
Char yelped when his hands warmed, but it was more out of surprise than hurt. She was sensitive to heat after all. It couldn't hurt her in this form, but she was still wary of it. "He... he..." She teared up as the memories came back and shook her head, looking down. "I don't wish to speak of it. Not now." She said softly. Maybe she would tell Stefan. Another time. When she wasn't so exhausted and shaken up. Jay was working as usual, when he heard a faint sound from one of the ships... sort of like screaming... Jay frowned and moved closer. "What is that sound?" He asked. A rough looking man frowned, barring his way to the ship. "I hear naught." he growled.
Jay tried to push past. "What have you done to that soul you bloody bastard?" He cried.
The lights went dark as the pommel of a sword connected with his scull.
Stefan let go of her hand quickly not wanting to hurt her "oh I'm sorry, I just got so fired up...such a kind soul like you should never be hurt. Would you rather us set up camp here before continuing? You look very tired." He said pulling on some loose branches and making a lean to.Drina was hoarse from yelling, she cried in desperate plea and slunk to the floor. Her shackles clanked as she leaned against the side of the ship. She heard another scuffle and frowned leaning forward "-h-hello.." She croaked.
Charlotte nodded, "It's alright, and thank you." She said softly. She sank down on the soft leaves, gathering some up in her arms, as well as moss, to bed a small space inside the shelter for them. Once it was packed and soft, with room for both of them, she collapsed wearily and almost immediately falling asleep. Jay groaned softly as he woke up somewhere dark and damp. He immediately tried to stand and was jerked back to the floor by chains around his wrists. Growling in annoyance, he jerked at them, trying to get them off. "You scum!" He shouted.
Stefan finished the structure and lay by him snuggling close to her fragile body. She smelt like the sea and her hair tickled his face lightly. He never slept so close to a woman it made him cautious and ultra...focused. Why couldn't he look away?Drina winced her head pounding "yell louder really...they might answer." She said sarcastically and coughed. She blinked knowing that voice "Captain?"
Charlottes exhausted body kept her in a deep dreamless sleep for the rest of the night. By morning, sje was much better rested. Her eyes fluttered open, and she smiled, watching the sun rise through the trees.Jay slumped back against the damp ship wall and stared up at the boarding above them. "Not anymore." He huffed, closing his eyes. Leave it to him to get in a situation like this. However, he still had not recognized the girl. Her voice was somewhat familiar but.... he couldnt peg it.
Stefan was more of a light sleeper, it wasn't natural for him to sleep at night. Being a fire imp he still had the natural nocturnal instincts, they would hunt at night, silent acrobats near the cliffs and volcanos. His forearm covered his face as he snored lightly, blocking out the sun he slept in for a bit. Which apparently he needed!Drina blinked a little taken back by his words, not anymore? Because of the thief invasion? Or something more personal? She coughed again the cold moisture in the air was something her body was not used to. She wished she could see him, but the way they were shackled it was nearly impossible. Doubtful he even remembered her, at times she didn't even remember the flaming spirit that kept her alive. The camp had silenced that and she was tired and weak without her powers. "Are you hurt?" She asked softly not wanting the conversation to end so abruptly.
Charlotte got up slowly so as not to wake him and crept out of their shelter. Slipping into the forest, she reached the stream and bent down. Slipping her hand in the water, she pulled it out again with two fish. Smiling, she got up and prepaired wood for a fire, befre getting the fish ready to be baked.Jay heard her pause and wondered if she was surprised by his answer. Why would she be? He didnt know her.... or did he? He shook his head, his eyes still closed. "Fine." He promised. "You ok? I heard you screaming..." he said.
Stefan stirred when a delicious scent wafted into the shelter. He slowly sat up and panicked that Char wasn't there until he heard her by the fire. He smiled her direction "morning, what's all this?" The fish were cooking on a flat stone and they looked mouth watering good.Drina sighed "I'll be fine....I was just foolish allowing myself to trust them." She coughed again the sound more wet. "This isn't much better then the camp so I'll survive...I'm surprised that you're here..." She admitted quietly still trying to figure out whether he knew her. They'd see each other in the day when the sunlight shows through the cracks.
Char smiled softly, shrugging. "Just some breakfast. Nothing fancy for now, but maybe once I get to the ocean I can catch us something nicer. Like a crab. Or lobster." She offered, smiling. She poked at one of them with a stick. "They're almost done. There's one for you, and one for me. And I can catch more later if you'd like." She offered, motioning in the direction of the stream. "Got them just over there. Jay raised an eyebrow. "Camp? Trust them? Trust who?" he asked. And why did she act like she knew him? And her voice... it was so familiar.... He frowned, trying to figure it out. His eyes widened then. No... it couldn't be... "Are... are you that gypsy that.... saved me from a pack of thieves?" he asked softly.
Stevan smiled and gathered herbs from nearby bushes, he recognized each one and sprinkled it on the fish "it will give it some flavor!" He said excited and watched the fire gently tracing his finger against the delicate flame "how does a mermaid know how to build a fire? I thought this was your first time on land."Drina smiled "I am...I apologize if I was too forward, I'm just glad to hear that you are alright..." She coughed her body trembling "I trusted one of those scurvy dogs, he said he was leading me for more rations and the next thing I know...I'm trapped." She said sadly and moved the shackles "I suppose I should be used to it."
Charlotte smiled happily, watching the fish and herbs sizzle on the rock. Then she sighed, shrugging. "It is my first time on land..." She said honestly, "But I watched the fishermen who caught me build fires many a night before I came to the circus. I figured it couldn't be too hard.... except that well... it would have been easier with your help..." She said, smiling at him. Jay nodded, as it made more sense now. He knew where that voice belonged to, and he knew why it was familiar. "Well. thanks for your help." He said seriously. Then he frowned again, listening to her story. Something about it held a certain sadness. But why? he could not tell. "What do you mean?" he asked softly. "Why would you be used to it?"
Stefan smiled "it would have taken me less then a blink of an eye...but you really did a nice job. I'm lucky and grateful to have you as a companion and friend." He blew slowly on the fish and the cooled enough so their tongues wouldn't be burnt "ladies first." He motioned his hand to the fish.Drina sighed "doesn't matter...I'm sorry you got caught up into this mess..." She said softly and coughed. She pulled her knees up shivering and coughing. "I prefer the scorching sun...they are taking us to that barbaric America..."
Charlotte smiled softly, her face growing slightly pink. "And the same goes for me." She said smiling at him. She gingerly scooped up a fish and closed her eyes, smelling it for a moment. It smelled so wonderful, she could not wait to bite into it, and that she did. "Mmmm... fish." She breathed, eating each bite slowly to savor it. Jay's eyes widened. "America!?" He asked, shocked. He never thought he would see America again. He wasn't sure if he wanted to... what would his boss say? What would they do? It would be death for him, for abandoning his mission. Jay groaned and shook his head. "That is not good news at all." He said softly. "Hopefully these pirates let you go when we reach there. Maybe you could get on another ship back to your homeland." he offered.
Stefan waited till she took the first bite before reaching for his, the flesh was so pink and perfect the herbs just gave it an added touch. This was the best meal in a long time, he sunk his teeth in and quickly finished having no clue how starving he was! He wiped off his mouth and smiled over at her "good?"Drina closed her eyes tightly and shook her head "to what? Be thrown back into that camp to die like the rest of my people?...I'd rather perish on the ship..." She whispered her voice shaky from the cold. She heard the trap door creak open and a rough hand grabbed her by her chest "you'll be dining with us tonight, and you'll be naked." He grinned with his ragged brown teeth.
Charlotte was picking at the fish's bones and she smiled, nodding and licking her lips. "delightful." She agreed, standing slowly, still a little wobbly on her legs. "Shall we get started off again?" she suggested, looking out at the sun which was already heading for the center of the sky. Jay frowned. "Camp?" He still had no idea about the slave camps that had been established during his absence. Times were harsh, and he didn't know the extent of it. He growled then when a pirate joined them. "No she wont." He snapped, clawing to his knees again, straining at his chains. "Dont you dare touch her you scummy rat." He snarled.
Stefan nodded and grabbed the pack around his shoulders, he kicked the rocks into the fire to diminish it and not cause any damage to the forest. Noticing the unsteady wobbling he steadied her with his arm and frowned concerned "do you need me to carry you again?"The pirate laughed hoarsely not loosening his grip on Drina. "Why captain, I'm surprised that you would care about a filthy little witch. Wasn't it your idea to rid of them all? They were mangy beasts?..." The words stung Drina and she looked at the captain waiting for a response. Did he still think that way, after all she had done?
Charlotte frowned down at her feet and shook her head. "No. Not yet. I need to get my legs strong." She said seriously. "Let me walk for a while." She said, determined. She took a few steps, then a few more, getting used to walking again, and started off, determined, through the forest. Jay jerked at his shackles, rubbing his wrists raw. "She, nor anyone else deserves this. Her status should not be lower than any human's." he said seriously, his eyes flashing. "If there is any mangy beasts in this world it is you and your friends." he spat.
Stefan chuckled not daring to argue and smiled after her "well wait for me then!" She was ahead of him and he had to do a slow jog to catch up. He looked around at the forest "beautiful huh?...I know you have coral reefs but aren't the trees just fantastic?...they stretch for miles and house so many creatures."Drina felt of surge of strength go through her and in a flash Jay's shackles clattered to the ground. She tried to fight off the pirate that was dragging her up to the deck now by her hair. She felt hungry eyes look at her as if she was the catch of the day.
Charlotte nodded, slowing as she admired the forest as well. "Its a shame you can not come underwater long. I would love to show you some of my world." she said softly, marvelling at the trees. They reminded her of the kelp forests back in the ocean. Oh how she missed them so...Jay leaped to action, sprinting at the pirate and catapulting into him, punching and clawing and biting all at once. He did not, and never would approve of treating a woman like that. Didn't matter to him what sort of women she was, she still had rights. And he didn't care what happened to him now either, as long as he kept her safe.
Stefan sighed and nodded "maybe a protection spell...but I don't want to risk my flame going out...it's the only way for an imp to die." He exclaimed and kept walking "don't worry Char, I'll get you home..." He could see the sadness and loneliness in her eyes and features.Drina pulled at him and back down into the murky brink and slammed the trap door shut and locked it before sighing in relief. Her heart was pounding and she ran a hand through her messy hair. "Thank you..." She said softly finally being able to see his face, his hair was longer and his face rugged he looked far less intimidating.

Jay raised an eyebrow as he watched her stumble and back away from the desk, saying she couldn't read. He nodded, believing her about reading. "I trust it wont happen again." he said, shutting the drawer. He couldn't have everyone knowing their plans. Even some of his own men didn't. "Do you feel up to eating then?" he asked, turning to face her again.
