message 151: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments I am halfway through Textrovert, which I should be able to finish tomorrow.

message 152: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments Based on the spreadsheet, it looks like we only need one more book that would fit the STEM category. Is anyone close to finishing a book for this?

message 153: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments I should be able to finish Return to the Dark House today which would count for the STEM Digital Art/Movie Maker slot.

message 154: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I'm going to go ahead and start Old Yeller. It's pretty short, but still meets the page requirements and we could use it under animals (pets) in case Samantha doesn't get her book finished today. I still needed to read 'a children's classic you've never read before' for the AtY challenge anyways.

message 155: by C (new)

C (tctcat) | 79 comments My book "Rabbit Cake" can go into Stem (Animals) if needed.

I didn't realize, but the two books I picked up are decently long and dense. I may read a graphic novel instead to at least get something completed before the read-a-thon is done.

message 156: by Allegra (last edited Sep 12, 2019 10:38AM) (new)

Allegra | 158 comments Finished River of Teeth.
I've put it on the spreadsheet as GS-Innovation for now. (Reasoning, if needed: When the U.S. started a hippopotamus-for-meat program --just go with it; it happened--MC Houndstooth bought his own ranch and developed a breeding program.) Do I need to do strikeout to indicate it's finished? Or something else, beyond starting my next (short) book?
Let me know if we need to move RoT. As I mentioned, we've got options aplenty.

Allegra, I moved River of Teeth to STEM since that was our last open slot. Based on what you said about it, I moved it to Animals. I hope that was okay.

So with that book we have completed Quest 3!

message 158: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Awesome job Team Brownie!!!!

Mods, we are ready for Quest #4 when you are available!

Thanks!

message 159: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments We are on a roll! In the meantime, if anyone finishes a book, it can be added to the Unused Books tab of the spreadsheet.

I'm off to check my TBR for an audiobook related to water so I can slay the Lexicon Ness Monster for the individual challenge.

Absolutely fine. Thanks for taking care of it

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Quest 4:

Sometimes we have to take a moment and just reflect on the journey. For the next stop, we'll focus on some of the books that have already been completed.

Read 15 books related to books that your team has read so far in this read-a-thon. Books must be connected by the following ways:
- 5 books published in the same year
- 4 books with the same word in the title [excluding A, An, and The]
- 3 books with a similar cover [color, object, etc.]
- 2 books set in the same location or written by authors born in the same locations [country]
- 1 book by the same author

Read 3 books [or books by authors] that are mentioned in a read-a-thon game.

Hint: If you're having trouble, it may be a good idea for members of your group to play the read-a-thon games ;)

This should equal 18 total books for quest 4.

message 162: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Oookay, so my current read (nearly finished) is Return to the Dark House which could fit for same word in title, similar cover, or same author of my earlier read: Welcome to the Dark House.

message 163: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Wow, okay then. Samantha, super impressive that you read the minds of the Mods!

message 164: by Allegra (new)

Allegra | 158 comments Is there a quick way to check (or can someone compile a list here) what books were actually used in the previous quests? I think I'm reading the spreadsheet wrong, since I'm not seeing what categories are finished and which are simply "possible books"

BTW FYI, my current reads are Catch-22 and B Is for Beer

message 165: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Hi Allegra, there is a tab called "completed", the second one, that has the list of the officially submitted books.

message 166: by C (new)

C (tctcat) | 79 comments I'll figure out a new spreadsheet for this tomorrow morning (12h). hopefully what I'm reading now will fit in somewhere

message 167: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Thanks Cali!!

My current read will fit the published in the same year category. Hope to finish tomorrow.

message 168: by Errlee (new)

Errlee | 183 comments Ooh this one seems a bit trickier ... have three books going at the moment, hopefully at least some of them will slot in. And have to confess I haven’t been playing any of the games.

Will take a closer look tomorrow - too tired to tackle it tonight;)

message 170: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I am still working on my book. I haven't had nearly enough time to read this week. Hopefully I can pick it up for the weekend. I know the book I am reading now was published the same year as my other book.

message 171: by Samantha (last edited Sep 12, 2019 07:17PM) (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments I've been playing the games, at least most of them. There are a whole bunch from the 90s Kid Book Tag - that counts as a game, right? Probably the best place to go to get your picks from, but also, here's a list of the authors mentioned in the games Title Scramble and Books by One Liner, in no particular order:

Victor Hugo
Stephen King
Dr. Seuss
Dan Brown
Diana Gabaldon
John Steinbeck
Arthur Golden
Margaret Mitchell
Tommy Orange
Herman Melville
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Sara Gruen
Suzanne Collins
Vladimir Nabokov
Stieg Larsson

I can probably grab a King novel - I've got a few of his shorter works on deck.

message 172: by Errlee (new)

Errlee | 183 comments I’m reading Stephen King’s Firestarter at the moment so hopefully I can get through it soon.

message 173: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Also, here are all our current read covers, so we can see them as reference for "similar cover" prompt. Obv, there are other versions, but at least this is a start.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments I finished off Textrovert, and have started A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy. I'll have to look tomorrow to see where they might fit.

Errlee | 183 comments Samantha wrote: "Oookay, so my current read (nearly finished) is Return to the Dark House which could fit for same word in title, similar cover, or same author of my earlier read: [book:Welcome to t..."

So is it that we would have to coordinate and make sure all 4 books for the quest had the same word - so if we used these two books, for example, 2 more people would have to read a book with the work "dark"or "house" depending on which word we choose?

That's what I mean about being trickier - same for 5 books published the same year. Requires a bit more coordination!

message 177: by Errlee (new)

Errlee | 183 comments I'm about halfway through The Testaments by Margaret Atwood at the moment and think I will be finished today. I think it could work for similar cover to Sing to It: New Stories. Side profile of person? What do people think?

The Testaments (The Handmaid's Tale, #2) by Margaret Atwood Sing to It New Stories by Amy Hempel

Also clearly published in 2019. And set in US/Canada.
Will look to see if the other books I am reading might slot in somewhere, but that's the one I'm likely to finish first.

message 178: by C (new)

C (tctcat) | 79 comments I'm setting up the spreadsheet now. I'll take a look at the books people have read and slot them in once I'm finished.

I also finished Snotgirl, Vol. 1: Green Hair Don't Care (136 pages) and Snotgirl, Vol. 2: California Screaming (136 pages) and will add those someone as well.

Jen K | 572 comments Errlee wrote: "Samantha wrote: "Oookay, so my current read (nearly finished) is Return to the Dark House which could fit for same word in title, similar cover, or same author of my earlier read: [..."

My understanding is that they can be all different connections! For example for the same word, each new book read for Quest 4 needs to match another book read for the Quest but they don't have to match each other - we don't have to use the word "dark" for every title match.

I agree that they look similar!

message 181: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments I finished Fight or Flight by Samantha Young and put it in for the same published year.

message 182: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 283 comments Hi team!!

For similar cover... Is it possible "a cover with an animal" or "a cover mostly with black and White colors"?

Because my current books are: Rising Storm and Ídolos de ceniza. I can't think of another connection with the books already read.

"Rising Storm" - > "Rabbit cake" or "This is how you lose the time war"

"Los ídolos de ceniza" - > "Long way down"

I'm using the app, I can't use the cover link.

message 183: by C (new)

C (tctcat) | 79 comments Alright, spreadsheet complete. This one is kind of tough to organize so here's how I did it:

I added the typical Quest 4 Planning sheet but also linked to other sheets that document the following:
- Years other quest books were published
- All words that were used in previous book titles
- Authors of books from the readathon games
- And an external link to Samantha's comment with the book covers

If I get the energy later today I'll add sheets for the other categories. Thank you Samantha and Vanessa for providing those lists!

I think those connections make sense. I'm also reading "unconnected" books, so if I finish it during Quest 4, I was thinking to put B Is for Beer by Tom Robbins could go with The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick . Both covers have a drinking vessel as the focal point.
They do keep saying to "be creative"

I like that!

I put Snotgirl, Vol. 1: Green Hair Don't Care as a title word match with Monstress, Vol. 1: Awakening (Vol. 1). I'm still figuring out where to put Snotgirl, Vol. 2 California Screaming (Snotgirl, #2) by Bryan Lee O'Malley but figure it should match another book's setting (Los Angeles, California) or author's location (Canada).

message 186: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Hey Cali, could you add another category for:

- 1 book by the same author (used by team in Quests/ not from the games)

Thanks for all the amazing work on the spreadsheet!!!!

Oh, okay - that makes it a lot easier then! I was making it harder than it needed to be :)

message 188: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 283 comments Cali, one of the authors of "This is how you lose the war of time", Amal El-Mohtar, is Canadian

message 189: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments Just for the record, the book I finished last night Textrovert was published in 2017 and the cover looks like this: Textrovert by Lindsey Summers .

The author was born in Hawaii and now lives in LA, and the book was set in the US. I'm pretty sure it was California.

message 190: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments I just finished Return to the Dark House. I put it towards the Similar Cover prompt, but, as I said earlier, it could also fit same Title and Author if we need to move it

I'm going to go through my TBR and see what I can find that will fit the prompts here. My weekend is pretty empty, so I should be able to get some solid reading time in.

message 191: by Errlee (new)

Errlee | 183 comments I just finished The Testaments and think it fits the same cover prompt.

Could be slotted in for publication date (2019) or setting/ author location if need be instead. I’m on my iPad so can’t do much from here so if someone wants to add it onto the spreadsheet for me that would be much appreciated!

message 192: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 283 comments I finished Rising Storm and it only fit in the same cover prompt (for an animal cover).

In this moment I'm on my cell, using the app so can't add the book in the spreadsheet for the moment

message 193: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Nice reading everyone!! I updated the spreadsheet with the latest reads. We are 7 down which is impressive!

message 195: by C (new)

C (tctcat) | 79 comments Vanessa wrote: "Cali, one of the authors of "This is how you lose the war of time", Amal El-Mohtar, is Canadian"

Thank you for the tip!

And Jen K - thank you for updating the spreadsheet :) I was distracted with Borderlands yesterday but am home all weekend (and have the house to myself today) so I plan to get a few more books in. I just finished Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed and put it in the same year as Sing to It: New Stories (2019). I'll find a new book now and will add some more to the spreadsheet so we can more easily check off some of the game related books.

message 196: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments I'm also reading The Testaments today which I mentioned in the first read-a-thon game as the book I was most looking forward to reading. I'm not sure if it will count for the quest that I read a book from a game if I am the one who mentioned it, but if not, we can switch mine and Errlee's read of it.

message 197: by Allegra (new)

Allegra | 158 comments I'm still not clear if the spreadsheet has in-progress or finished works. In either case, I've now finished B Is for Beer, which I can only see as matching covers (see Msg. 184). But all the slots for that are taken.
If something else can move, that's an option. Otherwise, I can put it with the "unused" and wait for Quest #5.
Let me know if there's anything I can/need to do to help.

message 198: by Jen K (last edited Sep 14, 2019 07:53AM) (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Good morning! I finished Down Among the Sticks and Bones and put it in the same title category with Long Way Down.

Kind of jealous of all of you reading The Testaments already!

message 199: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I have finally finished Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane. Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane

I have no idea how quest 4 is working or where to fit it in, so add it where it needs to go. It was published in 2019 and takes place in NY/NJ. Thank you!!

Everyone is doing awesome!
