Jillian | 2917 comments Mods- We have finished Quest 3 and are ready for Quest 4!

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Good job team! I'll finish Beneath the Lion's Gaze tonight, hopefully it'll count for the next quest.

Quest 4:

Sometimes we have to take a moment and just reflect on the journey. For the next stop, we'll focus on some of the books that have already been completed.

Read 15 books related to books that your team has read so far in this read-a-thon. Books must be connected by the following ways:
- 5 books published in the same year
- 4 books with the same word in the title [excluding A, An, and The]
- 3 books with a similar cover [color, object, etc.]
- 2 books set in the same location or written by authors born in the same locations [country]
- 1 book by the same author

Read 3 books [or books by authors] that are mentioned in a read-a-thon game.

Hint: If you're having trouble, it may be a good idea for members of your group to play the read-a-thon games ;)

This should equal 18 total books for quest 4.

Jillian | 2917 comments Laura, I'm checking to see that I understand the next quest for 5 books published in the same year do all 5 books have to be published in the same year for example 2019. Or can 5 books just match the published year of 5 read books so the years could be different based on which year they are matching. Same question goes for other prompts for example one of the read books is The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son On Life, Love, and Loss. We could match the word Love with Luck, Love & Lemon Pie. Would we have to have 3 more books matching "love" or could they match other titles.

message 205: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I'll try an add the covers to post 2. If you read a book can you let me know if the link works for your book or if I need to use a different cover.

message 206: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I'll update the books page of the spreadsheet and add a planning tab.

They can all be different. They just have to match a book already read.

Quest 1 Books = 2019, 2005, 2010, 2007, 2015

Those are all totally random numbers but hopefully illustrates the idea. They don’t have to be different though either.

message 208: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Books page has been updated with year, author, and (for some) nationality/setting. I attempted a planning sheet, but it was a little tricky. It does list all the years and all the countries (that I've looked up so far).

Another question!

For books that are already completed, does this mean only quest 1, 2, and 3? i.e. once someone finishes a book in quest 4 is it also eligible as "already completed"?

message 210: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Yes, quest 4 books are totally fine

message 211: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Here are my books:
Dreams from My Father A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama The Ensemble by Aja Gabel A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness The Dew Breaker by Edwidge Danticat

message 212: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments What do people think of using the word "too"? Trying to figure out what book to start from my pile.

I could also start a book by David Sedaris if no one else has a repeat author in mind.

Thanks that makes sense.

message 215: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments For now I added Samantha's book here

- 4 books with the same word in the title [excluding A, An, and The]
1."Love" Quest 3 [4. Family Life- [book:The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son On Life, Love, and Loss|26072609]~ Perri 9/11/19] Quest 4 Luck, Love & Lemon Pie ~Samantha 9/12/19

message 216: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Ugh, my "too" is in a subtitle. Do we think that counts?

I'm crossing my fingers I'll get Britt-Marie Was Here from the library tomorrow (it's in transit), which would count for a book mentioned in the games.

message 217: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I finished Beneath the Lion's Gaze, which only counts for year unless it ends up counting for cover. It's currently slotted into year.

message 218: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I think subtitles should count, they are still part of the title.

message 219: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Jillian - Does Infinity take place in France? There's an "X" in column H for France.

message 220: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Traci wrote: "Jillian - Does Infinity take place in France? There's an "X" in column H for France."

Nope, I must have accidentally marked it. It takes place in
New Orleans, Louisiana so it could work for US or published in 2010.

message 221: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Devin and Traci, I added your book covers to post 2. I won't be able to get to a computer until later tomorrow evening.

message 222: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I just finished Connections in Death. Published in 2019. Set in New York City.

Jillian | 2917 comments I just saw Chrissy's book Where the Crawdads Sing was mentioned in Read-a-Thon #3 - Day 4: 90s Kid Book Tag https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I don't think she has posted about finishing it yet. I think that is going to be the hardest prompts to fill.

message 224: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Jill wrote: "I just finished Connections in Death. Published in 2019. Set in New York City."

I added it to the spreadsheet and marked it for "death".

message 226: by Traci (last edited Sep 12, 2019 09:27PM) (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Gillian Flynn was also mentioned in 90s kid book tag, so Alaina's Sharp Objects could work for the ATY games prompt.

message 227: by Deborah (last edited Sep 12, 2019 10:30PM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments My covers so far:
The Passengers by John Marrs Ten by Gretchen McNeil Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land The Arrangement by Robyn Harding Where the Line Bleeds by Jesmyn Ward

The book I'm hoping to finish this weekend is The Shape of Night - the word of is in other titles, 2019 pub date, it has a body of water on the cover with land in the distance as does the cover for Ten, setting is US.

The Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen

message 228: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1142 comments I did finish Where the Crawdads Sing tonight, but figuring out where it fits will have to wait till tomorrow. Good night all!

Jillian | 2917 comments Chrissy wrote: "I did finish Where the Crawdads Sing tonight, but figuring out where it fits will have to wait till tomorrow. Good night all!"

I added your book for the read-a-thon game since I think that is the hardest spot to fill.

message 230: by Sarah (last edited Sep 13, 2019 07:33AM) (new)

Sarah | 539 comments I finished You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams: My Life in Stories and Pictures yesterday. It was published in 2016 which fits into 5 books published in the same year. It matches the year "The Rainbow comes and goes" was published, used in quest 3 by Perri.

Or we can use it in " 4 books with the same word in the title" it. It matches the "you" in "Where'd You go, Bernadette"

I just saw that Neil Gaiman is mentioned in the game "Day 4: 90s Kid Book Tag" I have a book of his I can listen to The View from the Cheap Seats: Selected Nonfiction and we could put it in for one the 3 books mentioned in a read-a-thon game. I is about 15 hrs long so it will take me today and tomorrow to do but I am sure i can get it done!

Sarah and Jillian - For now I put You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams: My Life in Stories and Pictures in the matching word category for "you" since I think it's a tougher category (though we've been prioritizing it, so it doesn't look so bad). Feel free to move if you see fit.

message 234: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I finished It's Okay to Laugh (Crying Is Cool Too) by Nora McInerny Purmort .
What do you think about similar cover to The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber .

I mean, it's different but two arms seems an odd thing to have on a cover.

message 235: by Chrissy (last edited Sep 13, 2019 03:40PM) (new)

Chrissy | 1142 comments Is tomorrow the end of the readathon? If so, I may not be able to finish another book. I have to do some work in the morning and have a social thing in the afternoon. However, I am trying to decide what to start next, and my choices seem to be Heavy: An American Memoir, Arm of the Sphinx, Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist, and Prison Noir. I haven’t looked at length yet, but is there one that jumps out as helpful for our final quest?

ETA: none of these looks like a fast read. Maybe I’ll start on Prison Noir because it is shorter and see how it goes. It was published in 2014 and set in the US. The cover is in black and white and has a jail cell with a person: Prison Noir by Joyce Carol Oates .

message 236: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1142 comments Traci, I think those seem plenty similar!

message 237: by Veronica (last edited Sep 13, 2019 03:53PM) (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments I finally finished People of the Book!

Looking at my options, I think the best one to put it under may be Location, as part of the story takes place in Australia as well as the author was born and raised there before moving to the U.S. The only other option (I think) is using "book" as sharing a word in the title with "The Secret, Book and Scone Society".

Looking at the spreadsheet, I think I'm going to read a book mentioned in one of the read-a-thon game. I know I have Britt-Marie Was Here and Beartown on my bookshelf.
Edit: I'm going with The Nest, which is mentioned in the 90's kids book tag game. I actually have it out from the library right now!

Chrissy | 1142 comments Great! Maybe I can finish something then. Prison Noir is checked out, so that’s a no-go. I’m going with Arm of the Sphinx I guess, also 2014. I don’t think it will fit any other category.
Arm of the Sphinx (The Books of Babel, #2) by Josiah Bancroft

message 241: by Samantha (last edited Sep 13, 2019 04:49PM) (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I started The Emissary. Besides being published in 2018 not sure it is going to be a fit anywhere.

The Emissary by Yōko Tawada

message 242: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments Devin has quite a few graphic novels which are similar to Nimona?

message 243: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Devin wrote: "These are the graphic novels I have access to right now. Any of them look like they will fit?

The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1 The Faust Act by Kieron Gillen I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly..."

For matching cover, I think most would work (superhero). I think Black Panther looks most like Superman Birthright or Batgirl with Superman Birthright (capes). Is Saga the same character as Saga Vol 1?

message 244: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I'm starting Britt-Marie Was Here (probably not until tomorrow), which works for year or ATY games.

How is the Testaments so far? I'm on the library wait list (luckily I got on it super early so shouldn't have too much of a wait).

message 246: by Deborah (last edited Sep 14, 2019 12:47AM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I finished The Shape of Night and put it down for similar cover. Two covers with cool tones, body of water. Other options: 2019 pub, US location, word in common "of".

The Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen Ten by Gretchen McNeil

I am starting The Cage which has a very yellow cover like Good Me, Bad Me, but not sure when ill be finished.

The Cage (The Cage, #1) by Megan Shepherd Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land

message 247: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I finished my book and added it to the year published.

2. 2010 Infinity ~Jillian 9/14/19

I have not added anymore of the book covers to post 2 since we have that prompt covered with current books being read.

I have just started Invincible/ Invincible (Chronicles of Nick, #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon which will work for cover or location and probably year.

message 248: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Perrie- I'm removing , Nimona, The Book of Strange and Wonderful Things, and The Rainbow Comes and Goes that were added to the spreadsheet Quest #4 planning tab. That way just books read for Quest 4 are added there. Those books were ones that made a connection but were used in previous quests and are still on their quest sheets.

message 249: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Samantha wrote: "I started The Emissary. Besides being published in 2018 not sure it is going to be a fit anywhere.

The 2018 year published will be good since we still need 3 more books for that prompt.

message 250: by Alaina (last edited Sep 14, 2019 09:26AM) (new)

Alaina Rodriguez I'm sorry for not checking in for the past couple days. I've got some catching up to do.

I finished Sharp Objects, and like Traci had said it can work for the read-a-thon game prompt as Gillian Flynn was mentioned in the 90s Kid Book Tag.

For the two books I'm reading now I'm having a hard time finding a prompt that works. I'm reading Gyo today and should also have it finished by the end of the day. It is set in Japan as well as being written by a Japanese author. The cover is all black with a splash of red. I'm also reading Aesop's Illustrated Fables which is even more difficult to place... I might have to look at my shelves and see if I can find some other books that will work better

Covers: Obsidio (The Illuminae Files, #3) by Amie Kaufman The Dog Stars by Peter Heller Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn Gyo by Junji Ito Aesop's Illustrated Fables by Aesop
