High Five: reporting ONLY
Tasha wrote: "Gail I hope you are feeling a bit better today :)"Hi Tasha, I'm feeling better now, thanks, although I don't think I'm going to finish all my books, because I wasn't very well for a couple of days and didn't get much reading done. I'll try to read very fast tomorrow!
Okay, I think I've added everyone's data - let me know if I've missed anything out or made an error.
Gail wrote: "Okay, I think I've added everyone's data - let me know if I've missed anything out or made an error."Yes, I'm good (as usual)!
Glad to see that you are better, Gail, we can't do this without you(r great organising talent)!
Finished Blackberry Wine and will start my next book tonight. I'm traveling tomorrow so I should have no problem finishing it.
I finished my Round 4 book (Swapped with Tejas Janet- Round 5) - nutty - The Pleasure of My Company.Sorry to hear about your health, Gail. Hope you get well soon.
For roll 18, rarely or unread genre I read Undead and Unpopular by MaryJanice Davidson. I picked this up at the thrift store today just for this roll. I hardly ever read paranormal. For my classic book, roll #14 I am readingThe Prince and Other Writings by Niccolò Machiavelli.
I am about to start The Tuesday Club Murders: A Miss Marple Mystery by Agatha Christie for roll 15, murder mystery. I will read The Hero by Robyn Carr for roll 17 free parking.
I read rolls 18, 14, 15, and 17 today. I just rolled for 19, and got a 16 sending me to 14 = Virginia Avenue – I was born in Virginia. Read a book that takes place in your hometown/city/county/province/state/territory/country – you get the idea. Try to get close, but don’t drive yourself insane.
For roll 19, I will read A Brother's Honor by Brenda Jackson. It is set in Virginia. Roll 20 was 32, sending me to space 6, another murder mystery. I will probably read another Agatha Christie book for that. I won't roll anymore in case I get a task I don't want.
Finished round 5 book with an embarrassing cover - The Mile High Club. Was seen in library checking out the book and then reading it in the doctor's office waiting room yesterday.
I finished my Round Twelve book, Excellent Women by Barbara Pymand
my Round Fifteen book The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: And Other Stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Finished Station Eleven, round 4, and I'm done. I'd like to think I could roll again and finish one more by noon tomorrow, but totally unrealistic. This was fun, and such an organized team, especially with Gail's excellent spreadsheet!
Finished round 2 360 Degrees Longitude: One Family's Journey Around the World. Enjoyed this one very much. Have enjoyed all my reads tho for this toppler.I think I can squeeze in one more before tomorrow's finish line. Will have to pick carefully tho (as in, must be easy to read quickly!).
For my 6th and probably final round, I rolled a 3. That puts me on square 6/oriental avenue - read a murder mystery or true life murder book.
I'm going to read Buried in a Bog. It's a cozy mystery available immediately thru my library's Overdrive ebooks.
Finished my Round 1 book. These Broken Stars. I could have finished one more if not for dinner out with relatives. Damn. Bad timing!
Tejas Janet wrote: "Finished round 5 book with an embarrassing cover - The Mile High Club. Was seen in library checking out the book and then reading it in the doctor's office waiting room yesterday."Great, that took a lot of courage! ;)
I just finished: The Fine Art of Keeping Quiet for my 5th roll (YA book). With only 7 hours left - and a lot of housework to do - this will be my last book for this Toppler.Ah, don't want it to be over....!
I think we have a great team! It was a lot of fun doing this with all of you!
I haven't done a day's-Toppler yet, but I can't imagine it being as much fun as this!
I almost didn't join the toppler, but I am really glad I did. I had a great time, and read a few books I probably would have never even tried.
I finished reading my third roll book
Finally the toppler is over... Such a great experience.. Thanks to Tejas Janet & Pragya who encouraged me to join.. Great work team...high five!!
High five, Paakhi, and everyone! Of the six books I rolled for, I only read three, but at least that cancels out negative points (except for the -10 I got from a 'Do you feel lucky?' roll). Sorry - I should have been able to read them all, but I've been unwell this week with some cough/cold bug and a horrible headache, so found it hard to focus, and was sleeping a lot of the time when I could have been reading. I shouldn't have rolled so many though - if I do one of these again, I will only roll for three!I'm almost up to date with the spreadsheet. I still need information about whether the following books were read:
Round 2 - Marie - The Green and Pleasant Land
Round 3 - Marie Claude - Hex on the Ex
Round 10 - Dawn - Heart of Darkness
Round 14 - Dawn - The Turkish Gambit
(If you've already posted about these and I missed it, I apologise - I've tried to keep track of everyone, but I sometimes miss posts!)
Mine are done, I was just coming here to report. I stayed up to the wee hours to finish both. Though I shall now have to re-read as I didn't take in anything (being sleepy and speed-reading don't mix)and am a little confused about what happened in those books!
Hey Gail!! my captain... don't bother abt reading, health is always important.... besides you were great at coordinating, clarifying and updating. Have a speedy recovery :D
Thanks, Paakhi. :-)Dawn, I am impressed. I can't read without understanding - I have to go back and make sure I understand before continuing. And when I try to read in the wee hours I just fall asleep. I probably don't have the stamina for this sort of game, even when I'm not sick! Although I am glad I did the Toppler, because I read a couple of books I'd been meaning to read for ages, and I really enjoyed them. The Color Purple in particular is a really really good book - I hadn't expected it to be so good.
If I planned all the harder books for the beginning of the challenge it would work just fine. Neither Joseph Conrad or Boris Akunin write the kind of books you can breeze through and I had to finish in a hurry, so comprehension went out the window!!
I think if I do another Toppler I will plan it differently too. I was reading several books at once, so by the end, I'd read three books, but also half of two other books. I wish I'd read them one at a time, and then I might have read four books.

I don't know about the Boris Akunin book, but I know firsthand that Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" isn't an easy read at any speed, in my opinion any way. It is a decidedly enigmatic work.

It was fun, Paakhi. I'm glad we all got to be on the same team : )
I read that Conrad's first and second languages were Polish and French. English, his third language, wasn't acquired until he was twenty, and yet he chose to write about his experiences on the British Congo in English, which some hypothesize may have contributed to the book's aura of ambiguity, whether intentionally or not. Interesting I thought.
That is interesting. Because it does almost have that feel of a translated book. It's very dense and had a rambling quality to it. I'm going to have to go back about halfway and go slower to catch all the words and meanings.
Gail, you did great even with not keeping well. You kept us in check and organized it all. :)I read 4 books but unfortunately didn't like even one of them.
Paakhi, I am so glad you joined in and we got to be on the same team. It was fun comparing notes and motivating each other.
I did enjoy doing the spreadsheet. :-)That's a shame you didn't like your books, Pragya - and impressive that you kept reading even though you didn't like them.
The Sci-fi one was the most difficult to finish as I don't enjoy reading that genre but that was what the task was about. I had a lovely team in here and was motivated to finish all the tasks. :D
Paakhi wrote: "Hey Gail!! my captain... don't bother abt reading, health is always important.... besides you were great at coordinating, clarifying and updating. So don't worry about lost points - it is the fun we had together that counts!!

Too bad that you didn't like your books. But I'm glad you did enjoy the Toppler! I really loved it - and read some books I've been wanting to read (and even enjoyed them)...
Can't wait to do the next one!
We just need to find out whether Marie read This Green and Pleasant Land. We either have 660 points or 630 points.
i have finished this green and pleasant land - it is set in leeds the civic and ton halls are both historical monuments there http://www.minube.co.uk/tag/historica...as is the war memorial http://www.lostancestors.eu/memwar/L/...
Hmm, don't know. Here and maybe the Toppler-opoly thread? But wow, what a great toppler. My only regret is maybe for anyone who read a book they didn't enjoy just to help out their team. I know that my first toppler I read too many books I didn't really enjoy.
Haven't made that mistake again. At the end of the day, what you take away from the topplers are the books you've read AND the fun you've had here with your YLTO peeps.
Finished Hex on the Ex this morning for my third task. Sorry for posting this late, I was away from home all day and did not have access to a computer. This toppler was not a good one for me :( Hope to do better next time...
Marie Claude, hey 3 books is good! Hopefully you liked the books you read. Don't stress too much about these topplers. It's just a game. Thanks for reading so many books!! Some people, not me, can read super fast. Oh well. I do my part. And we're a team. It all adds up. Were you away on vacation before coming home to do this toppler? Where did you travel to? Was it vacation or vacation/business/family stuff?

Phewww, this is easy then. I'm going with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Six Other Stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald
This was going to be my first after toppler book but now I'll be able to get points for it!
