Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I think I've updated the spreadsheet correctly - if I've made any errors, let me know.

Got it. Thanks! :)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Gail, Rebecca and I just swapped one: my YA from round 1 goes to Rebecca and I'll take her vampire from round 4!

message 54: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) My 5th roll is 15 sending me to 34 = Pennsylvania Avenue – Pennsylvania has a strong connection to food, Hershey kisses, pretzels, potato chips, philly cheese steak, peeps – my mouth is watering! Read a book where food plays an important part I will keep this. I just need to find a suitable book.

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments For my vampire book for round #4 I'll read this:
Where Secrets Lie.

You might want to look at books by Diana Abu-Jaber.

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Elsbeth - I'm wondering, are we allowed to swap again from round 1? I thought round 1 had to be evenly divided, so that each team member had one of someone else's from that first round, and that the inter-round swapping came after. I'm not sure, but I thought round 1 was supposed to be different from the others.

Oh, I hadn't thought about that! Let's just ask Jmom?

message 59: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I've just asked her in the question thread.

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Gail wrote: "I've just asked her in the question thread."

Thanks! I was just going through all the previous questions and answers, but I couldn't find anything about this. So we'll just have to wait.

message 61: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Elsbeth, I'm just taking a look, and I think that even if we are allowed to do it, you might not be able to do that particular swap, because there can be no repeat tasks in Round 1. You'd be trading your Round 1 task for a vampire task, when there is already a vampire task in Round 1.

message 62: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Jmom said in the rules: 'For the first task I wanted to be sure a team wasn't doing the same task more than once. Once a member is ready to generate their second number, they can land anywhere.'

But that second task stays in round 4, does it not?

I see what you mean by it being confusing Gail. Do you think it would help if you put in what round the assigned person is reading it for??

So in this case putting (round 3) under Pragya's name in the round 4 section??

Only if you think it helps you though! :)

message 65: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Elsbeth, the second task would stay in round 4 on the spreadsheet, but in reality, it would be in round 1 for the person doing it (in this case, you), because your name would no longer be on the Round 1 part of the spreadsheet, but still everyone is doing Round 1. The fact that your name isn't on Round 1 doesn't mean you're not doing Round 1. It's just been put somewhere else on the spreadsheet.

For instance, someone could only do two rounds, but if their second book was swapped with someone's book in the sixth round, their name would be on Round 1 and round 6, but for that person, it is still Round 1 and Round 2, because they haven't done 6 rounds.

message 66: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Dawn, yes, that might be an idea.

message 67: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Also, that would show clearly what I just said to Elsbeth - it's quite hard to explain!

message 68: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I think it helps putting in the rounds. It makes it easier to see where my round 6 book is coming from anyway.

message 69: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Okay, I've done what you said, Dawn. Elsbeth, if you and Rebecca were to swap, your name would be in Round 4, as the one taking Rebecca's task, but you'd have 'Round 1' in brackets after your name. And Rebecca's name would be in Round 1, but it would have 'Round 4' in brackets after it. She also has her name in Round 1, doing the Round 1 task, so this would still be Round 4 for her. Just as you would still have a Round 1, even though your name isn't on it.

message 70: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Well, that is the trouble with swapping between rounds - it makes everything rather complicated...

message 71: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments We always seem to be posting at the same time Gail! :D

message 72: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments It does, Elsbeth - but in all rounds after Round 1, it doesn't matter if everyone does the same task, if that's what they happened to roll. But jmom wanted Round 1 to have everyone doing different tasks. And then after Round 1 comes all the chaos! :-)

Dawn, yes, lol!

message 73: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Yes, and I was posting the last one at the same time as Gail :)

I'd offer you my tasks from round 1 or 2, but it seems like there's more than enough chaos at the moment. I'm still confused about some of the basic rules, like swapping after you've picked out and declared a book for a task. I know you can change books at will, but can you change your mind about keeping or swapping the task??

message 76: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Gail wrote: "I think I've updated the spreadsheet correctly - if I've made any errors, let me know."

Book I'm reading in Round One -- The Paris Wife, not The Paris Life. Also, in Round One my board number should be 36, not 9, per Jmom.

For Round Three - I rolled a 10. That puts me on square 25. Task = Read a science fiction fantasy book. I've tentatively picked Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Dirk Gently #1) by Douglas Adams unless someone wants to swap. I'm fine keeping or swapping this one.

message 77: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments You can always change your mind about the books you're going to read for your tasks - declaring them doesn't set them in stone. And I think you can change your mind about swapping at this point - although probably not when the person you swapped with has actually started reading the book for the task you swapped with them! - but it does get complicated and chaotic, and I think it's easier to stick with what you've decided to swap. I find it easier anyway, because I think I will find it too confusing if my list of books to read is constantly changing. Although I don't mind if Pragya wants to choose a different person to swap with - I purposely haven't chosen a Man Booker book yet, because she may want to swap with someone who has a better offer. I was going to offer different tasks of mine to swap instead, but then I thought it would get too complicated and chaotic, and the vampire task was one I didn't particularly want.

message 78: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments (But, I'm not sure if you can offer tasks from Round 1 for a swap with a later round - we still have to find that out.)

message 79: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Tejas Janet wrote: "I know you can change books at will, but can you change your mind about keeping or swapping the task??..."

I haven't read anything specific but I think it makes sense to say it's possible to put your task up for trade anytime.
You know what it's like with rulings on tasks that suddenly make the book you picked ineligible, if you can find someone to trade with would be the important part.

Wanting a task back would probably just be rude but if the other person agrees then I can't see an issue with that either.

message 80: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Yes, I imagined it was more an etiquette thing than a rule thing. I also figured that Pragya mentioning that vampires weren't her first choice was her way of letting me know she was open to other offers.

message 84: by Elsbeth (last edited Oct 04, 2014 12:18PM) (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments I hadn't thought about it, but it rather sounds logical that you can't swap round 1 tasks with ones from other rounds.

So this will be the new swap:
My 'nutty as a fruitcake' (round 3) goes to Rebecca and her vampire-book from round 4 goes to me.

For that I want to read: Where Secrets Lie. And my YA book from the first round I want to change in: Wicked Hunger (because I'm reading it for another challenge as well...).

message 85: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Thanks Gail for switching with me. This means that my Round 8 task will now be Read a book with a tree on the cover which I believe is your Round 6?? task.

I am going to read The Wolves of Savernake by Edward Marston The Wolves of Savernake by Edward Marston

message 86: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Ah, I'm glad you've got a book with a tree on it. Now I can read Alice in Wonderland. :-)

I will update the spreadsheet now.

message 89: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Tejas Janet, why is your board number not 9, when you had to move to the space of your choice, and you moved to 9 to give the classic task to Marie Claude?

message 90: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments And oops, sorry about missing your earlier post. I see it now. Did jmom tell you that you had to stay on 36 rather than move to the space of your choice?

message 91: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) For round 2, I will be reading 22 Indigo Place by Sandra Brown. My copy has exactly 200 pages, so it fits the short line task. My fruitcake task is listed as round 3, but shouldn't that be my round 4, since we switched between rounds? I rolled a 7 for my 3rd roll sending me to space 12-electric avenue. I will read Christmas Angel by Jo Beverley for that. It's set in the early 1800's in England and mentions using candles for light. Then for round 5 i got 15 sending me to space 34,Pennsylvania Avenue. I will read Menu for Romance by Kaye Dacus for that. One of the main characters is a chef.

Yes, exactly. I think I reported that but we have so much reporting going on it's hard to get every little thing. Thank you so much for keeping the lovely spreadsheet!

message 93: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I got a 14 for my 6th roll, sending me to space 8 Vermont Avenue – Fall is here and the leaves will be turning. Read a book set in the fall. I'll have to hunt for a book for this.

message 94: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Okay, all updated. Rebecca, that fruitcake task is Round 4 for you, but I can't move it on the spreadsheet, because it is still Round 3 for the person who rolled it. What this means is that both your Round 3 and your Round 4 reads are posted in the Round 3 table, but the Round 4 task has '(Round 4)' written after it.

message 95: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) Okay, thanks. I was just a little confused by all the swapping. This is my first Toppler, and it is a little overwhelming.

message 96: by Gail (new)

I'm thinking about rolling for a 4th book. In my 3rd round I ended up in jail (#30). Team 4 sent me to do #3. Do I understand it correctly that I add my roll to 30 - since that is where I ended up on my own? (Or do I add it to 3, since that is where team 4 sent me?)

Yes, and it means that my name is not on round 3 (only as someone who rolled, not assigned) and when I get around to round 4 it probably will mean my name will appear twice.
I understand how it works, but I also understand that it looks very confusing :)...

That is what makes the preparations so much fun!!!

For another bookgroup today started a Read-a-thon. It is not half as much fun, since you can just read whatever you want and there are no teams. (I'm not as motivated as I was for our june-toppler and as I am for this toppler!)...
