Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments This is a reporting thread for the High Five team, so that our other thread can be used for chatting. Please use this thread to report the following:

1. What book you are reading for your task
2. When you have finished reading a book
3. What number you have generated next, and where that puts you on the Monopoly board (you add it to your last number, and pass 'go' if necessary)
4. Whether you'll be reading a book for that task, or offering it for someone else to take
5. If you are taking a task that someone has offered

I think that's everything - I will add to it if I think of something else.

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments This is where I will post the pool of untaken tasks, for people to choose from.

message 3: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I will report which book I'm reading for the first task.
Star Guard by Andre Norton Star Guard by Andre Norton

It has humans on an alien planet and a starship so fits great with 31 = Sandy’s Treedome (Spongebob) – Sandy is in a world that is normally alien to squirrels. Read a book with someone who is not in their own environment – aliens on earth, humans on another planet or a spaceship. This will also include time travel – humans going back in time or into the future, dinosaurs in the present.

message 4: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I will also roll for book two. I got a 6 which added to 29 gives me task 35 = Short Line – Read a book between 150 and 200 pages long.

I will be keeping this and reading:

Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie (192 pages)

message 5: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments My roll for book three is 14 which lands me on 9 = Talosians (Star Trek Limited Edition) – The classic original series led to movies and spinoffs, and this episode won a Hugo award. Read a classic, or a book you believe should be a classic (and justify why).

I'm going to keep this one too and read:

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

message 6: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Rolling for book four is 39 which lands me on 8 = Vermont Avenue – Fall is here and the leaves will be turning. Read a book set in the fall.

Which I'm also keeping as it is October and I have the perfect fall book:

Hallowe'en Party (Hercule Poirot, #36) by Agatha Christie Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie

message 7: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments How can we tell I don't want to be working today....for book five I've come up with 29 which lands me on 37 = Saint Bernard (Dog-opoly) – What do you think of when you see a Saint Bernard? The little keg of rum that should be tied around it’s neck? Then this book’s for you. Read a book set in a snowy area, where you wish you were in a lodge with a good book and some rum toddies.

I have another good book for this task, I think Russia could conceivably be snowy:

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

message 8: by Elsbeth (last edited Oct 01, 2014 12:08AM) (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments For my first task (#29) I will probably read: The Fine Art of Keeping Quiet by Charity Tahmaseb The Fine Art of Keeping Quiet by Charity Tahmaseb.

For my next roll I got 33. Should I add that to my first roll? Than it would get me to 19:
Read a book with vampires, and/or werewolves, and/or witches.

I have several books of those, so I'll keep it!
I think I will read:
Witch Hunt by Kristen S. Walker Witch Hunt by Kristen S. Walker

message 9: by Marie Claude (new)

Marie Claude (mariecg2001) | 1030 comments I will read A Clockwork Orange for my first task (read a classic).

For the second round, I rolled a 25. Which means I end up at 5 - Reading Railroad (reading a book with 3 colors of the rainbow on the cover or title or combination). I will take the task and read The Color Purple. There are 2 rainbow colors on the cover (yellow and some orange) and the purple of the title.

message 10: by Pragya (last edited Oct 02, 2014 12:35PM) (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I will be reading These Broken Stars for my first read for #38 Luxury Tax.

Second, I will be reading Insanity for #35- Short Line.

For my third roll of #18 that lands me at #13, I will be reading one of these for Sunspear.

The English Patient
Amsterdam
The Gathering
The Sea

message 11: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Okay, I'm rolling for my next three books this morning. For book six I have rolled 16 which lands me on space 13 = Sunspear (Game of Thrones Throneopoly) – In 1997 Game of Thrones won three awards and was nominated for two more. The Man Booker Prize for Fiction winners are hit and miss for many GR members. Read a book that has won it and see what you think.

Which is perfect because I want to read:

The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje (1992 winner)

message 12: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments A 3 for book seven will land me on 16 = Tumblr (Social Media Edition) – People are convinced that everyone else wants to know what they’re doing and what they’re thinking about. Read a book that’s in essay, diary, letter, e-mail, or blog format.

Though this is a less interesting task for me I do have a book for it (actually my sister owns this book):

Bridget Jones's Diary (Bridget Jones, #1) by Helen Fielding Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding

message 13: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments And the final one until at least the first 3 days of the toppler are over so I can assess my progress. Have obtained a 27 which lands me on 3 = Fruitcake (Christmas-opoly) – Read a book with a significant character who is “As nutty as a fruitcake”. This does not have to be a medical diagnosis. Some inventors were considered nuts before their inventions proved to work. Or someone’s quirks may seem nutty to others. And some political and religious figures have ambitions that clearly indicate they aren’t rational.

And because my sister is a massive fan of this book and wants me to read it:

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

message 14: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments ok for my first task I am going to read Interview with the Vampire,Anne Rice

I am going to roll for my second.

message 15: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments ok rolled for my second. My roll from 8 was 36 landing me on 4

4 = Walker Horde (Walking Dead) – Read a horror book. One that scares the crap out of you (or at least really creeps you out). Vampires, werewolves and witches not included here. This is for fictional horrors, not true life ones.

I am going to keep this one and choose Horns by Joe Hill I wanted to read this one before I watch the movie

message 16: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments I rolled 11 for my 3rd roll, which landed me on #30:
= Go To Jail – someone from another team chooses what space to send you to

I randomly chose team 4 and they chose for me
3 = Fruitcake (Christmas-opoly) – Read a book with a significant character who is “As nutty as a fruitcake”.

I'm going to try and find a book for this. Should I really not find one, I'll put it in the pool. I'll let you know...

message 18: by Rebecca (last edited Oct 03, 2014 01:22PM) (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) For my 1st task, romance I will read Three Little Words by Susan Mallery.

message 20: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Your second move is correct as far as I can see, Tejas Janet. 18 +19 is 37, so that is where you are.

message 21: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments If the first roll was 36 and was 'go to a space of your choice' and the space of your (or in think case Marie Claude's) choice was 9 then your second roll was 19....you would land on 28 = Water Works – read a book set in a place where there is a shortage of water, because of geographical location or drought.

You don't move from the task you are doing in the first round but from the task you gave away.

message 22: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Dawn wrote: "If the first roll was 36 and was 'go to a space of your choice' and the space of your (or in think case Marie Claude's) choice was 9 then your second roll was 19....you would land on 28 = Water Wor..."

That's what I was wondering about. We need to be sure everyone does this consistently (and correctly!).

message 23: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Yours was a bit complicated!

message 24: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments It was, and I'm still not really sure what's correct for my case. I think I'll ask Jmom...

message 25: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I got 7 again for my 3rd roll, which sends me to space 12 Electric Company. I have to figure out what to read for it.

message 26: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) Apparently, my book for the rainbow task won't work. I asked again to make sure the other colors wouldn't count, but if not, I will have to put that task in the pool. I posted in the regular team thread, too just in case.

message 27: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Sorry, Tejas Janet, Dawn is right, it's 9 + 19, not 18 + 19. The first round is confusing because of taking other people's tasks, but keeping the number of the task we give away.

message 28: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments 18 was my number, and you took my task, but I still keep my number and you keep yours.

message 29: by Marie Claude (new)

Marie Claude (mariecg2001) | 1030 comments Rebecca wrote: "Apparently, my book for the rainbow task won't work."

Pretty hard to find books that fit! I went through all my to be read shelf (of over 300 books) before finding one that I thought could do and I could get before the Toppler... And I still thing The Color Purple should have done the trick since some petals are orange and others are pure yellow... but don't feel like arguing...

Hope the one who gets the task has better chance than us

message 30: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments So my first task has changed as I've switched with our newest member so she can read a task not her own.
Sharon now has 31 = Sandy’s Treedome (Spongebob) – Sandy is in a world that is normally alien to squirrels. Read a book with someone who is not in their own environment – aliens on earth, humans on another planet or a spaceship. This will also include time travel – humans going back in time or into the future, dinosaurs in the present.
And I have 37 = Saint Bernard (Dog-opoly) – What do you think of when you see a Saint Bernard? The little keg of rum that should be tied around it’s neck? Then this book’s for you. Read a book set in a snowy area, where you wish you were in a lodge with a good book and some rum toddies.

So my first book will now be The Winter Queen (Erast Fandorin Mysteries, #1) by Boris Akunin The Winter Queen by Boris Akunin

Sharon (alynor) | 298 comments Reporting/Update

1st roll= 29. Number already taken, so rolled again and got an 8 for a total of 37 = Saint Bernard. Traded with Dawn for her 31 = Sandy’s Treedome (Spongebob) – alien environment, will read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1) by Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

2nd roll=9. Space = 6, Oriental Avenue. Read a murder mystery. Traded with Dawn for her #13 Man Booker Prize winner, will read The God of Small Things The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

3rd roll=12. Space=18. Kew Palace. Historical fiction with an actual historical person. Will read Lady Macbeth Lady Macbeth by Susan Fraser King

I just don't understand the ruling. The sky on the cover has orange, yellow, and blue. I won't argue, though.
I've had offers to swap tasks, butI don't read paranormal books, and I can't think of any epistolary books that I own, so I don't know what to do next.

message 33: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments You can see if someone else has a task you could read a book for and ask if they would like to swap? And there still are 3 people who didn't roll for the second time, so maybe one of them would like to swap?
We'll work something out!

message 34: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments About the ruling, I think Jmom means that the colors have to be more bright, yours are a bit pastel like. If I understand her correctly.

Rebecca (bd200789) Elsbeth wrote: "About the ruling, I think Jmom means that the colors have to be more bright, yours are a bit pastel like. If I understand her correctly."
Thank you. I wasn't sure what I was missing. :) And, I will take Gail's task if she doesn't mind. I had already rolled a 7 for my 3rd task, which sends me to space 12. Is that still okay, or do I need to roll again since I'm switching tasks?

message 36: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Alrighty, another change for you Gail.

I have switched my Round Two task #35 with Rebecca for her Round Two task #5.

I will now be reading 13 for Luck by Agatha Christie 13 for Luck by Agatha Christie

message 38: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Thanks for all the updates. I'll add all this stuff to the spreadsheet at the weekend.

message 39: by Sharon (last edited Oct 03, 2014 08:07AM) (new)

Sharon (alynor) | 298 comments My second roll was Oriental Ave., murder mystery book (see above), and willing to swap. My TBR list was mysteriously short on mysteries. I think my TBRs in that category are all in my head!

message 40: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I have stacks of murder mysteries, so I could trade any of these if you are interested:

#5 - Read a book with at least three colors of the rainbow
#13 - Man Booker Prize Winner
#16 - Read a book that’s in essay, diary, letter, e-mail, or blog format.
#3 - Read a book with a significant character who is “As nutty as a fruitcake”.

message 41: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (alynor) | 298 comments I'll trade #6 for #13, Dawn. Thanks!

message 42: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments You're gonna be busy updating the spreadsheet this weekend Gail. :)

So this is a switch for Round Six for me. I did have #13 - Man Booker Winner, for which I was going to read The English Patient

Now I have #6 - Murder Mystery and I'm going going to read 4 50 from Paddington (Miss Marple #8) by Agatha Christie 4:50 from Paddington by Agatha Christie

message 43: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I have #13 if someone wants to exchange.

#13 - Man Booker Prize Winner

message 44: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Don't you want that one, Pragya? I would like to read a Man Booker prize winner. Would you like to read a vampire/werewolf/witch book?

message 45: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Gail, I wanted it but found no books in my library and I don't want to buy right now.

Well, vampires aren't my first choice but I have a couple of books lying around so I will take that off your hand.

I'm going to read either of -

Dead Until Dark
Darkfever
Dark Lover

Pragya, don't know if it would be any better, but I can offer my science fiction fantasy task if you'd like that any better than vampires. I've not ever read a vampire book, but I think Living Dead in Dallas might be amusing.

Thank you for offering TJ but am already reading a science fiction for my first task and I think one is all I can take during a week. :p

message 48: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I just realised something. When we swap tasks that are in different rounds, it will look a bit uneven on the spreadsheet. As the vampire task was in round 4, I have to put your name there, Pragya, as the one who has taken my task (unless someone offers you another one you'd rather take), even though this was your round 3 task. So, if you roll again, you'll have your name twice on the round 4 tasks, and I'll have my name twice on the round 3 tasks. You can see what I mean if you look at the spreadsheet. Hopefully it will all still make sense though.

message 49: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I got that, Gail. But as long as we are following the rules, it should be okay, right?

message 50: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Yes - it's within the rules. It just looks odd on the spreadsheet, so I thought I'd mention it in case it confuses anyone.
