Pooor Piggy & his glasses :(

(I am now panicking that I remembered it right! It is Piggy with the glasses? and Ralph the main bully?)

message 402: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I remember it that way Cat; though I dont think I would have remembered Ralph's name if you hadn't said it.

Piggy with the glasses yes, but Jack is being the bully while Ralph was voted chief and then didn't know what to do half the time hehe.

Alysa H. | 3887 comments OMG, I remember seeing the 1990 movie of that in the theater. I was 8 years old. The part where Piggy died emotionally scarred me for life.

Do you like it Eldarwen? Someday I'd like to re read it. I think the adult version of myself would like it more than when I read it way back when.
Piggy was the only character I could remember and then couldn't remember which role was which.

Not sure E had finished yet!

8yo is young for Lord of the Flies, isn't it?! No wonder you're scarred!
I've never seen an adaption of the book. Not sure I'd want to though...

Ah... Thanks!
It's been an age since I last read it...

It's a very odd book and I think it's definitely one of those you read in an entirely different way depending on your age, but as important now as ever considering the group dynamics, peer pressure etc etc.

I do like it though in a very frowny, what-on-earth-are-they-doing kind of way hehe.

Haha no, I still have a few pages left to go but it's okay ;-)

Yeah I was with my adults, and had actually seen plenty of real "Horror" movies on VHS by then, such as Nightmare on Elm Street and the like (my father was totally inappropriate about that kind of thing), but movie theaters here were also way more more laissez-faire about age restrictions back then.

Lord of the Flies was absolutely scarier to me at that age than Freddie Kreuger ever could have been though, because it was more "real"!

message 411: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
I can see why you'd think it was scarier, because it really does feel so much more real than Freddie Krueger ever could! I enjoyed the read, but at the same time I started to hate it more and more towards the end. It's scary that these kinds of classics are still so very accurate to this day because the inherent truth buried underneath all of it is still the same today. Humans are assholes. And to think that these were kids who didn't know what they were doing half the time..

If you don't know what else to read in the meantime, you can always grab my second spot in SZ1 if you want :-)

I'm not going to get much reading done over the weekend.

I'll take a look, but am a bit out of sorts: no book grabbing me right now :(

Shall go check out the Backroom BOM noms, do some admin there.

I was probably thrown by the early morning pic from my sister, of my nephew plugged into an audio at 7.45 in the morning! He loves his audios :) but it's a lot to live up to, y'know!

message 418: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Oh wow! Good for him though :-)

A friend's son is always clamouring for audios as soon as he's in the car. He gets grumpy when his parents want to listen to music for a change and not a children's story haha.

Love it when they're into books so early on already :-D

It has been my main aim as auntie!

Totally success with #1, who adores books, even if his prescription has made learning to read tricky. #2 likes being read to, but isn't as into it, sadly. She's all about unicorns & playing pretend games, even at bed time. #3 loves books, but hasn't had quite as many pressed on him, 'cos they are further away (plus the adoption thing meant I missed out on the first 18mths :( )

I'm getting excited for mid October - the illustrated GoF is published, and I will be presenting each family with a copy :)
#1 (and his dad!) have been chewing their arms off, waiting for it to come out! As #1 is only 6 1/2 now, I've been glad for the pause, to let him grow a bit into the issues....

message 420: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Can I have you as an auntie, too?? I would love an illustrated copy of GoF hehe ;-)

But yes, good thing that #1 is a little older now because as of book 4, they're starting to become quite a little dark at times. And please please do not tell him that all Slytherins are bad! :-)

About those unicorns.... there was an AWESOME unicorn book I came across recently with a beautiful purple cover but I can't remember the name... I'll go on the hunt!

The Magical Unicorn Society Official Handbook by Selwyn E. Phipps

:-D Maybe that'll her more into reading books?

I just looked back at my list and Lord of the Flies was actually read by people on two other teams, so I'll go edit the spreadsheet to reflect that.

message 423: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10156 comments Mod
Gah! I wish you'd spotted that earlier.... I found a short N book read by one of the other teams.... at 114p it wasn't worth DNF-ing, but I was very close to it!

Night Visits, iyi. no plot. attempt at erotica, I think. didn't even hit bad porn...

But, N read!

Hope it isn't too serious and that you can all go home as soon as possible!

message 428: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Long day. He's home or almost home. There was an ammonia leak at his work, he couldn't breathe and was sick. Side effect triggered one of his migraines and they wouldn't discharge him until his vitals were consistent and the migraine subsided. Scary stuff. Definitely not how any of us imagined spending our Sunday afternoon
He's staying home tomorrow and hoping back to work on Tuesday.

message 429: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Eurgh, that's definitely not a fun way to spend a day for any of you. Glad to hear they let him go home in the end though! Migraines just make everything worse, such a nuisance.

Hopefully the day off will help him recuperate nicely :-)

Everyone is so antsy and hectic here today, it's making me veeeeeeery aggressive >.>

And it means that I keep getting interrupted in my work, which pisses me off to no end.
Incidentally, that also means that they aren't letting me read :-p

message 447: by Cat (new)

Hope it calms down for you soon. Antsy, hectic and aggressive is not good :(

Eurgh... lunch break helped, though today 1 hour was just too short.

I think the hectic has died down, and the nuisances have been fed, so hopefully things will quiet down for the afternoon.

I just really, really hate days like these.

message 449: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Sooooo, that didn't happen haha. Why is it that all the important things and the emergencies happen on the same day?

I did manage to read 30% of my book, which is better than I expected but it is a superfast read. Will hopefully finish tomorrow!

message 450: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I finished my read; it was nice and short and not so bad for a cozy mystery.
