I've started a non Caucasian MC book (audio)

Thanks for finding a published on 4th,Laura! I hate those tasks (though wisely have kept that hatred quiet so it doesn't turn into another stick with which Sonia can tease me!)

Eldarwen wrote: " Odd that the hardcover of all editions was published later?!.."

It looks like the standard hardback was on the 4th, only the large print was later??

I assume you have the standard one, Laura?

Laura | 9707 comments Not my favorite task either. They are difficult to find. Yes I have the 380 something version not the over 500 page one.
Karen has a countdown up for this round so hoping I can finish in time. Tonight is bowling league which cuts into my reading time

Actually, if we're starting with SZ2, I could also do ii Read a book with a brown cover (>50%) where the author's name contains at least four of the letters in E-C-H-I-D-N-A.

That would fit for a SOS Bingo book if you agree that this is a brown cover: Timeless (Parasol Protectorate, #5) by Gail Carriger and the author shares for letters with our animal.

I finished The Winter of the Witch for prickly Holly.
I. I'm gonna start The Bookshop, which is on the movies list

I think Timeless is brown - Egyptian sand & so forth :)

Perfect :-)

I'm aaaalmost done with the Cowbear book - it's so ridiculous, it's giving me a few laughs at least, though combined with lots of eye rolling at the fantastic consistency of the characters hehe.

message 509: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10156 comments Mod
I just read "cowbear" and had an image of a cow shifting into a bear (or indeed vice verse), which I suspect is at least as ridiculous as what you were actually reading!

message 510: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Hahaha, wouldn't that be something!!

But no, it was a very smart play on cowboy and werebear. Didn't see that coming, eh??

Pegasus is a little more slow-going at the moment but I'm starting to get into the setting and once that's happened (and I've actually sat down and read it for a bit), it'll be quicker, I'm sure.

looking forward to the SZ tasks...

does To the Hilt by Dick Francis have brown writing? (for SZ2 task i)

message 512: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
My eyes go wonky on that one o.O

Looks like a chestnut brown (which does have a bit of a red tinge but is basically brown), so yes, should be brown.

message 513: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I finished C#4

Laura | 9707 comments Does this book work for the natural setting SZ2(iii)? I found animal in the text
Crystal Cove (Friday Harbor, #4) by Lisa Kleypas

eta - are we doing SZ1 as well?

Yep, lots of nature on that cover :-)

I was looking for a grumpy character book last night, but gave up. Any thoughts?
If nothing else I can check out what others have used I guess

Anita Blake has come up as a possibility because she's basically a grumpy cow in the first books.

I'll have a look around, see if I can find something :-)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
There are lists! Who would've thought haha.

The Ruby-Red trilogy is on there. I hadn't thought about that, but yes, there are grumpy characters in there. Perpetual frown and the like is often mentioned.

If you don't/can't read that, we can always switch if you can read/find something for adventure.

Grumpy Hot Men List hahaha.

Tons of options for bitchy characters: https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8...

Browsing through one of those lists - Pretty Little Liars! If those girls aren't bitchy, then I don't know who is haha.

I saw that, started a chapter last night, but I'm not really feeling it right now

Pretty Little Liars feels right. Or maybe Neaderthal Seeks Human...

Pretty Little Liars are quick silly reads. And definitely a guilty pleasure for me - they're terrible but I always wanted to keep reading because I wanted to know what had happened haha.

I didn't pick anything up for this task because I thought I would be too slow ... I 'm away all day tomorrow and Sunday will be an adulting day- Not great reading days.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10156 comments Mod
no probs Laura!

I've 1hr left in The Black God's Drums (listening to it), and I've started Pretty Little Liars for bitchy character. PLL is a quick read, so I'll be done with both tomorrow lunchtime I guess :)

I'm so not moving forward with my adventure book. It isn't that I don't like it, it's just that it's written very much like a narration with lots of text passages and I'm not really in the mood for that. I've been contemplating picking up something else instead and I'm going to take a few minutes now to browse through my adventure options and might just do exactly that. Even though it means I'll have another started book floating around that may not be finished before the year is up... oh well :-)

message 529: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10156 comments Mod
Finished PLL & Black Gods Drums.

Pegasus : I enjoyed it, but then got to the end to discover that it wasn't a standalone, like I'd thought (I read it when it first came out) and it's been a Rothfuss-Martin era waiting for #2...
Frustrating, however much I empathise with the depression / grief issues.

message 530: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Waaiiit, wait wait wait. It ISN'T a stand-alone?!

Bloody hell, I never even noticed that!! o.O

It's so annoying, I really want to continue with it because I am enjoying it despite it being frustratingly slow to read, but I also want to be done soon with the task so I don't hold you up, because if this keeps up, then I'll be done in a week with the book..

I'm going to give Moonraker a go. It's a lovely yellow cover with an I author, which I would've loved to keep for Uno (hehehe), but it's also MPG Adventure and might be a quicker read with a little less pages and slightly bigger font ;-)

message 531: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10156 comments Mod
Moonraker is fun! I used it for just that combo a couple of years ago, but am all in favour of you reading a book you'll finish quickish, so I can move on from Les Mis. (I'm now in Marius - YAY! nearly caught up!, but the opening section: Life in Paris through the eyes of one miserable, coming so soon after the convent musings just made my heart drop, and I've put it aside in favour of short books...)

message 532: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Hahaha yes, Les Mis just drags you down into a black hole sometimes. I'm in the beginning chapters of Marius as well. I'm hoping to get a few pages read in Les Mis today actually.

Moonraker is going well and I'm enjoying it a lot - of course ever since I started reading it I've had "Goldfinger" stuck in my head..

I'll finish Moonraker today.

Do we know if Sonia will finish her book before the deadline?

Also, which Safety Zones are we going to tackle?

not heard from Son since Friday... though she was hopeful to listen during the day and be done at some point in the weekend.

I think aiming for both? Certainly starting with SZ2, as per normal. Which means someone has to find a brown cover book...

message 535: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
I have a brown cover book - Timeless. It'll just take me a bit to read it because that series is always extreme slow reading for me. So if you'd rather have someone quicker to read for brown cover, I'll take task iii) or iv) with a short kindle freebie.

message 536: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10156 comments Mod
I've found a brown kindle freebie
The Curse of Hollister House (A Cat in the Attic Book, #1) by Kathi Daley
with author contains AHIDE

So I can take that one, and the brown letters one (To the Hilt)
I think Laura's got the natural setting, which leaves iv for you, E :)

message 537: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
Duly noted! :-)

Then I can just (once again) forget about Timeless and read something faster and more riveting for my vampires shelf call in SOS Bingo.

I'm not sure why but Gail Carriger has completely lost me, even though I've enjoyed the rest of Alexa Tarabotti's adventures. I never brought myself to read that last one though I've had a copy for ages. I know though that I won't touch the spin-offs. I really can't explain what happened there. Why I push it aside whenever I consider reading it, I mean.

I'm making Moonraker last.... hehe.

I'm itching to start Archangel's War but I don't want to start it before we can't get to the safety zones because otherwise I'm not going to be able to read anything for points here since it wouldn't count.

Les Mis is keeping me company and I'm actually starting to make my way a little further into Marius now :-)

:)

I finished a volume of Les Mis at lunch, so that's excellent timing!

I assume we (excluding studious Sonia) are reading SZ2 first, then assess if we want to tackle SZ1 or just do SZ3?

message 542: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13717 comments Mod
