Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I don't typically reread books, but I found comfort whenever I read Giant Days by John Allison. I would love to reread them, and I feel like this time of year is great to sit at home and binge read.

I'm currently making my way through the manga, One Piece. I love the friendship that the characters have. They are always willing to help one another through MANY battles. Definitely a found family type of vibe.

QOTD: In November, do you gravitate towards books with strong, memorable characters or those with rich, atmospheric settings?

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments LCPL wrote: "QOTD: In November, do you gravitate towards books with strong, memorable characters or those with rich, atmospheric settings?"

I don't read many books with rich, atmospheric settings, so I'll say memorable characters. It's very rare that a character sticks with me, so I suppose that is pretty important for me.

QOTD: November is a time for slowing down. Recommend a book that encourages readers to savor the details and appreciate the small moments.

Krystyna (adoseofcozy) | 889 comments I'd like to finish Once Upon a Wardrobe before the end of November but I'm not sure that I will be able to. The biggest goal that I have before the end of the month is to get my desk setup finished.

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments LCPL wrote: "QOTD: How many books did you read in November? What were your favorite and least favorite books of the month?"

I read 11 things in November. I read quite a few good manga volumes, and a few really good books. I can't really pick a favorite. I can tell you my least favorite and that was Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica. I can't express my hatred enough.

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What's on your December TBR?"

I would like to finish up what I'm currently reading:
Bad Cree by Jessica Johns
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
One Piece vol 8 by Eiichiro Oda
Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen

That might be all I get to. If I can get to more, I may add Little Rot by Akwaeke Emezi into the mix.

It doesn't really change for the seasons. I do tend to turn on ambient sounds in the winter, but that's about it.

Cooler weather and just the cozier vibes. I also have an excuse to not go anywhere because it's cold.

QOTD: Favorite book(s) set in winter?

message 3490: by Krystyna (new)

For the sake of convenience, I typically use a hot cocoa mix with milk. I sometimes add a splash of vanilla into the milk while it's heating up and I add a good dash of cinnamon into my hot cocoa mix. Once all of that is combined, I sometimes will top with whipped cream or marshmallows, but not always.

I think the perfect pairing for a mug of hot cocoa would be Greenglass House by Kate Milford. It's an incredibly cozy middle grade that is perfect to read in winter, especially around Christmas. This is essentially a mug of hot cocoa and a comfy blanket in book form.

Dead Voices by Katherine Arden
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

Debra Diggs | 2445 comments LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What new-to-you author did you discover this year that you enjoyed?"

Jennifer McMahon - In April, I read 1 book by her, then went on to read 7 more. She writes weird, paranormal books. I never guess where she is going with it. Great new author find.

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What new-to-you author did you discover this year that you enjoyed?"

Morgan Talty - I've read a short story and a novel by him and enjoyed both a lot. He's a very talented writer, and I'm excited for his new one that's coming out next year.

Adam Haslett - I've only read one book by him but it's in my top 5 books of the year.

message 3498: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 372 comments Delemhach. Their House Witch trilogy was one of my fave reads this year and the subsequent books so far that feature the grown children are just as wonderful.

message 3499: by Krystyna (new)

Krystyna (adoseofcozy) | 889 comments I have a few new-to-me authors that I enjoyed reading from this year.

Ava Reid – I read The Wolf and the Woodsman and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.

Bree Paulsen – I read Garlic and the Vampire and Garlic and the Witch and absolutely adored both of them.

Simone St. James – I read The Broken Girls and really enjoyed it and I can't wait to pick up more by her.

Jennifer McMahon – I read The Drowning Kind and really liked it the twisty suspense. I'm looking forward to reading more by her.

Emily Rath – I read these two hockey romances, That One Night and Pucking Around, as a buddy read and it was pretty spicy. It was my first hockey romances and they were pretty good. I'm probably going to read the sequel next year. The novella was super quick but the first book was over 700 pages.

H.D. Carlton – I decided to read some dark romance this year and one of them was from a new-to-me author. The Carlton book I started with was Haunting Adeline and it has been the darkest book I've read so far. I do plan on continuing with the sequel and more of her work.

I'm also including Samantha Shannon – I started reading The Priory of the Orange Tree at the end of 2022 and finished it at the beginning of 2023. I absolutely loved it!
