(view spoiler)[I know we are not writing reviews this season, but I simply must. Every so often I read a book that makes me wish I had not read it. This type of book that makes me wonder what I am doing with my life and isn't there some better way I could be spending my time. When a book makes me question the value reading in general, well that's a problem. I have a shelf titled "Books I wish I had not read". This book just became #10 on that shelf. I have over 1000 books on Goodreads and only 10 have made that shelf. Most of the books on that shelf are well-loved by others and usually acclaimed as classics, but I just can't stand them.

Why was this book Wide Sargasso Sea even written?

Author Jean Rhys, a white Creole, took umbrage with Brontë’s stereotypical depiction of Bertha. She was “vexed” by Brontë’s “portrait of the ‘paper tiger’ lunatic, the all wrong creole scenes, and above all by the real cruelty of Mr Rochester”.

The author had a personal ax to grind with the book Jane Eyre. Rhys wanted to the make the villains of Jane Eyre into sympathetic characters by writing a depressing stream of consciousness book about the moments before a madwoman commits suicide, after attempting to kill her brother just days before, and burn down a house destroying everyone else in her selfish hatred.

In my mind Rhys did not succeed. I have no sympathy for the madwoman even in Rhys version of her. Yet, in order for Rhys to even attempt a sympathetic portrayal she had to move the timeline 20 years later to make it coincide with certain historical events and turn the story into a historical commentary on slavery - which has little to do with the characters in Jane Eyre. Also other real facts were changed, such as the age of the narrator. I know in her madness the narrator does not realize she is no longer a young woman,,,,yet even so Rhys still made her younger to make her more sympathetic.

The story must be told through the eyes of an unreliable narrator. I had trouble buying into the point of view of this narrator, because I knew how unreliable she was. Thus it was hard to sympathize.

The use of Jane Eyre seemed like a cheap short cut. Rhys could have built her own characters to decry what she saw as an unfair portrayal of people she identified with. But I predict that if she had, the book would have gone nowhere. Only by springboarding off the work of another did it gain any relevance.

The entire premise was flawed and I resent wasting my time on it. The book just felt false, dishonest - not the madness but the author's twisting of characters to suit her own purposes to grind her ax. (hide spoiler)]

Review: (view spoiler)[For the concerned-about-dog readers: This is no Where the Red Fern Grows. And while yes, it’s very much about a dog, it’s more about writing and books.

Despite it’s small size, this was a long read. Long because the pace is deliberately slow - this is no plot driven novel where you frantically flip pages to see what comes next. Long because the language is beautiful and clean. Long because it meanders through memory and you find yourself doing the same.
It’s about loss and grief, but also mourning what you thought was there. And it’s an unconventional love story.
It’s also a book that will either thrill academics/lit majors, or irritate the hell out of them. For a moment mid-book I was tilting towards pretentious, indulgent, and dull. I took a break, read some horror, and returned in exactly the right mood to appreciate what this book talks about and how it does goes about it.
