Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Thought it'd be nice to have a corner for just odds and ends, while we wait for the next season.

I'll start:

Shame that Jon Pertwee and Nicholas Courtney ( Doctor #3 and the Brig) never did a Sherlock Holmes project together.
That would have been pretty cool.

Who would be Holmes? Hmmm Patrick Troghton, I think.

message 3: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I was thinking Pertwee as Holmes and Courtney as Watson.

Travis wrote: "I was thinking Pertwee as Holmes and Courtney as Watson."

This is what happens when you're in a hurry and thinking it would be fun to mix-up the dynamic a bit, and not paying close attention. 😊

However, yes, I agree. They had that going for them in the show, and I think they'd've had a blast doing Sherlock and Watson. Who for Lestraud?

message 5: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Troughton can be Lestrad.
Actually, he might be a fun Moriarty.

message 6: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 768 comments Mod
Roger Delgado could be Lestraud. I like the idea of Troughton as Moriarty. John Levene?

We need a Mrs. Hudson (not Liz Sladen though, she needs something more active).

message 7: by Jadetyger (last edited Mar 26, 2019 08:51AM) (new)

Jadetyger Sevea | 73 comments Edited--I changed my mind. I think Katy Manning would be an awesome Mrs. Hudson. Can you imagine? Maybe Lis Sladen as Irene? I'm sure she could've pulled it off. There aren't many active roles for women in Holmes, so...

Re: Mrs. Hudson: Maybe Katy Manning.

Katy Manning sounds good.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Doctor Who has gotten a few spin-off shows, but it should have had more.
What characters/ideas deserved their own show?

My list:

Madam Vastra and company: How the BBC looked at these guys, and then decided to make 'Class', I'll never know.

Robots of Death: this Tom Baker story created a fascinating world, where society relies on robots just to keep going.
I'd like to see a version of the human/robot investigators from the story.

UNIT: any version. These guys deserve their own stories that show they can protect us, even without the Doctor.

Though I haven't listened to them, there is a whole series of UNIT stories out from Big Finish which have gotten good reviews.

I know - there's only so much a budget can take!

I gotta agree with you on Madame Vastra & Co. Class left a lot to be desired and all I can think was that they wanted an older version of The Sarah Jane Adventures or a younger version of Torchwood.

Unfortunately, they relied too much on the connection to Doctor Who and not on the characters who should have gotten more development. The stories too for that matter ... Much as I was disappointed by Torchwood (for a variety of reasons) and enjoyed what I saw of TSA, at least they each managed to carry its own weight in storytelling and character development.

"What characters/ideas deserved their own show?"
Huh. I'm going to be inclusive because that's how I see the Whoniverse:

A lot of the ones I would think about actually do have their own series spinoffs. Just because they're not on TV doesn't mean they don't count ...

While I'm no fan of either one of these ladies, both Dr. Bernice Summerfield and Dr. River Song have Big Finish series. Also Romana and Leela have the Gallifrey series.

There are a couple of stories featuring the original group - pre-UNIT - from Remembrance of the Daleks. Audio I think.

Ace maybe would have been fun to follow, even further than the New Adventures took her.

Fitz from the EDAs

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Yeah, I love what I've heard of Big Finish, but short of winning the lottery, there's no way I'll ever catch up.

My thoughts were all TV shows I wanted and I knew they were in no way connected to reality.

No worries. My brain is more book/audio oriented these days. LOL

message 13: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments It was thinking about all the book/audios that got me thinking about how few TV spin offs we got.

message 14: by Jadetyger (new)

Jadetyger Sevea | 73 comments I /think/ Big Finish has audio rights to Madame Vastra et al now. I know, not good on the pocketbook, but... :)

message 15: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, almost finished with the Pertwee era in my massive rewatch.
Except, for some reason, it's really hard to find a copy of Mind of Evil.
Netflix doesn't have it and the DVD is pricey.

Anybody know why that is?
For some weird reason, it's the only Pertwee story I've had any trouble with.

Really nice, crazy energetic and annoyingly good looking and charming.

He strikes me as a guy who just genuinely enjoys just about everything he does.

message 18: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Used my amazon points to scoop up all the Douglas Adams episode novelizations.
So nice that they are filling in the gaps, but a bit annoyed that they are all huge hardcovers, as they look weird and out of place on the shelf with all my target paperbacks.

Pirate Planet: Why is this thing over 300pages?
Some nice bits, but the middle drags. Trim 50 pages out of this thing and it would be rock solid.
Do love the Tardis team characterization. Everyone sounds perfect.

Krikketmen: again, too big for a Who novelization and tries too hard to sound like Adams.
Again the Tardis team feels perfect. Especially Rommana one and K-9!
Fun to read, but I think I prefer the Hitchhiker's book.

Rick | 2260 comments I enjoyed Class. But I totally understand the criticism. It certainly had its faults.

I’ve recently caved and started in on Big Finish stuff. I’m really enjoying the The First Doctor Adventures and am working on getting as many of the audios for 8 as I can. In a lot of cases I set a mental price and keep a watchful eye for used copies that might turn up from reliable sellers on the webs. I’ve had surprisingly good luck. I’ve also been able to fill in a lot of pesky holes in the classic series arcs (you know, the ones that cost prohibitively expensive), but now they’re putting out season sets on Blu-ray that are much more economical. I’ve been donating my old dvds to my library or a friend.

I enjoyed Class also. I wish they were given a chance to make a wrap up episode/movie. I think for modern series that sort of thing would help satisfy the fandoms. Fans of many series are always left at the end of a series wanting a proper closure.

message 22: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments And Class really needed a “wrap party” so to speak.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Trailer is out for the new season and...holy crap, was that Step[hen Fry!

It looks pretty good. Not sure how hard it'll be to see/stream it, but I am looking forward to it.

message 24: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Yeah it does look great! I don’t have BBC America so I probably won’t be able to watch it until comes out on disk, but the first two episodes are going to be shown in theaters in the area and I am hoping to go see it because it’s actually on my birthday so I’m hoping to go see it. Happy birthday to me. 😸

message 25: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Very cool!
My wife and I saw Capaldi's first episode on the big screen and it was a lot of fun.

I had read/heard that Fry would be appearing this season. Looks like he is in the first episode (at least part one of it)

It was very nice.

message 28: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments No, I’ll have to see if I can track it down.

CaptKirk42 Classic Whovian (klandersen) | 184 comments Travis wrote: "Any one see the little video Jodi did as the Doctor to help with quarantine awareness.

I did. Caught it first on a post from one of the DW Facebook groups. I think it was also recommended on my YouTube feed. I thought it was very clever.

message 30: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments While I am loving my massive Who watch, I have reached an annoying point.

First two Doctors are still missing episodes, which means I have graps to figure out and now I'm worried that netflix may be losing the rights and then I'll have to either track down other streaming options or buy the DVDs.

While my wife is happy at the prospect of owning all of new Who, how is she going to react to having to find a shelf for Tom Baker's entire ruin?

message 31: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Do you mean the lost episodes or are you just talking about those you don’t currently own if they disappear from Netflix?

Disappearing from Netflix is likely as they’ll eventually want everyone going to Britbox to see the old episodes.

As for the lost episodes from the first two Doctors, I’ve been getting the audio recording box sets. They’ve been releasing new editions over the last year. Some of the stories included have since been rediscovered or animated and released on disc, but I don’t mind I’ve gotten to at least listen to things like Marco Polo and The Dalek Masterplan.

message 32: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments some are the lost ones, where I'm tracking down the reconstructions.
I'm okay with the animated ones, but not into the just audio or tele snap ones.

Can't tell if netflix is losing the rights or is lazy adding new ones.
They released a bunch of Troughton reconstructions and netflix has gotten maybe one.

I'll keep plugging along until I have to find a new streaming source.

message 33: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments There are a couple Troughton animated reconstructions that are not available in the states yet. Amazon has had them available for preorder for quite awhile, I’ve had one on order for over a year, and they’ve not been release yet. One is The Faceless Ones and the other is Wheel in Space. I got The Macra Terror but haven’t watched it yet, I was waiting to insert it in the correct viewing spot when I got around to it in my rotation cycle again (I’ve just finished rewatching Hartnell season 2, so I’m getting close) and I picked up Power of the Daleks when it had come out about 3 years back, that one is quite good. So Netflix may not have access to all of these animated stories yet.

message 34: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Also - for streaming, Britbox has them all I believe, and PlutoTV (I think it’s called) has them as well.

message 35: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Kresal | 118 comments The Wheel in Space is an odd one because it hasn't come out in the UK either and, outside of the Amazon listing, no one seems to know what's going on with that title. I've seen speculation that there were/are plans to release the new telesnap reconstruction done for Britbox in 2017.

That said, there's a 10 minute animated adaptation of its first episode on The Macra Terror release that was shown at a BFI event in June 2018. So maybe they abandoned the project and Amazon simply hasn't removed the listing?

message 36: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Hmm, that’s possible.

I was hoping that they were in the process of making full animation for the lost episodes so that they’d eventually release season sets on Blu-ray for those first six seasons as they’re beginning to do with the other Doctors from the classic series. Originally I wasn’t going to switch to Blu-ray as I already had so much of the classic series, but the fact that they’re including all the original bonus material and some new stuff as well (added to the fact that they take up a LOT less shelf space) has won me over.

In another vein, the David Tennant Complete Collection Blu-ray set is a steal at $24.99 from amazon. It’s got the entire run with Tennant, including all the episodes and specials with Tennant and the bonus features from the original DVD sets, the animated specials The Infinite Quest and Dreamland AND the episodes of Sarah Jane Adventures that Tennant guest-starred in. The only things missing are the Big Finish audio-dramas that Tennant has done (understandable as those are not BBC productions) and The Day of the Doctor anniversary special (which is technically a Matt Smith era production). It takes up way less shelf space (one might say it’s bigger on the inside) and it’s a really nice set at a great price.

message 37: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Yeah, netflix has a couple of the Troughton's, but they've been in the saved/coming soon section for about six months.

I'm nearly done with the Pertwee era, and before starting Tom Baker's run, will be going back to fill in the gaps.

I love Who, but don't feel the need to own every episode, but I will break down if need be.

message 38: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments 😼 It’s my obsessive collector mentality. Gotta get ‘em all! 😸

message 39: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, a fanfic site I write for had a Doctor Who series, New Who based.
I subtly mentioned it might be nice to also have a classic Who series, so I got to write a couple 6th Doctor stories.

And, the site wants to do a crossover event and I talked him into letting me write a multi-Doctor story!

message 40: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Very cool!

message 41: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Yeah, iy was fun.
Got to give #6 some love and attention, which I always felt he deserved.

And the condition I gave myself for my multi Doctor is not to use any Doctors that have already participated in one before.
So, #'s 4,7,8,9 and 13!!
