I finished Persuasion and A Torch Against the Night in last few days. Enjoyed both books.
Started Blood of Elves, a BR in another group, and started On a Night Like This on a whim.

I really liked Razorblade tears.

I really liked Razorblade tears.

Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
It's not that similar to 1984 especially when it comes to world building.
1984 - there're explanations as to who is responsible and how the people are monitored. We have resistance from the protagonist. There's struggle, arrest, mass manipulation etc.
The Memory Police - Ambiguity. That's it.
Both the dystopia's have their base concept, i.e. 'memory'. And definitely some frightening things do happen in both. But the way the narrator and the cast perceive these things and react to them are very different in the memory police when compared to 1984.
So, some may not fancy that. I would still recommend it but proceed with no expectations.

Some books are not meant for me [ currently? maybe in future I may have a different thought/perception??
Only time will tell¿¡]

Yeah, understand. When I read 1984, it did feel very slow. I can understand why some would have found it boring. At that time, I did not like the ending, but later realized that's part and parcel of the genre.
That's how I came to appreciate them. Not my favorite genre but I do read them sometimes. (I didn't have the concept of DNF too, I just pushed through them, I guess that's still the case with me).
If you fancy the blurb of memory police, you can read couple of preview pages to decide. I personally feel it reads easy compared to 1984.
On that note, why is Guest list so slow? And currently there's more drama than suspense. Hope it gets somewhat better.

It will be hard for me to dive straight into any other book. I usually pace round the upper storey of my house, while the high from writing a good review cools duly.
I want to read books that have been demanding my attention, but to make all of them my current reads is impossible, because I have tried to read more than 3 books before. It doesn't work for me.
The next time I will post here, barring checking on my fellow readers here, will be in late February.

Even I don't read books simultaneously. It's one after the other. And when I start another, it depends whether I'm reading to reset my previous read or change my mood or just simply looking forward to it due to it's blurb (schedule is ofcourse an obvious reason for when to pick up a book).
Enjoy your next read!

Enjoy your next read!"
Oh I will enjoy the next read. My screening process has been finetuned to a good degree. The blurb is something I know is valuable but I don't want to be spoiled somewhat. I'm cautious that way. I have lined up a lot of cozies, due to discord. Will see how that rewards me :)

Yeah. Makes sense. I read the blurb when adding the book to tbr. Once I start reading it though, I don't go back to the blurb, it might spoil things, as you mentioned.

I highly recommend.
Thanks to @Emlo, I found it. :)
Mr. Higashino is creeping up on me. After I finished this yesterday, I added another of his works to my already overflowing tbr. Sigh!

I have just read the Prologue and before I dive straight into the book, want to express that Liu Cixin's writing is just wow!
This not a major spoiler. ->
So, I was wondering - why is the author describing the crests and troughs made by an ant on the ground. It turns out to be specific numbers and words, related to one of the main cast's relative's grave. ((view spoiler) )
And even the description about the path that the ant forges on the ground is brilliant. 'o' - "Life needed smoothness, but it also needed direction. One could not always be returning to the point of origin. This, the ant understood. Similar lines for numbers 7,9 and 2. The relationship between the ant and spider or lack thereof. And them being the only creatures that witness the discussion that'll birth the axioms of 'cosmic sociology'.
It feels like an opening scene of a hit sci-fi movie.
I already have highlighted so much in the prologue itself.
The only concern I have is the new characters and their names and how each one is related/not related to the 1st installment.
If my gushing didn't clue you guys in, well, I'm really excited. :)

I'm beyond glad that you are enjoying this sequel so much. This series has always appealed to me and woos me but there is something that holds me back. But I can recognise my own appreciation of books, in your words.

Random goodreads glitch?

Random goodreads glitch?"
I am getting the same glut of notifications, the old mixed with the new. Things will stabilise soon.

they didn't work over the weekend except likes, perhaps yesterday was Monday, with employees back in office, notification got fixed.

That is an astute observation. It is probably that.

I had finished reading it last night and had weird dreams. Some of the descriptions (of space & universe) in the book were so good. I just highlighted tons.

If you're into sci-fi and can warm up to new characters and outrageous scientific theories (which are fun/dreadful at the same time), then you should definitely try this trilogy.
Will be picking up the final one soon.
Finished few books since my last update here.
On a Night Like this - a romance, and I ended up friendship part more than the romance part.
Blood of Elves - liked it much better than the Witcher S2.
Reminders of Him - this was good but emo romances are not my cup o tea
Stationery Shop - History part was very engaging while the backbone of the book i.e. romance was felt flimsy to me.
Exit Strategy - I love bot! <3

1.November 9 - never ever going to reac Colleen Hoover for a very long time. Bakwas
2.Suspicious Sweet - A very sweet MM romance 3.5 stars. needed the lime zest to.make it 5.
3.Reread : All she wanted for Christmas. A historical novella very nice.
4. Josh and Gemma Make a Baby - delicate topic dealt with unkindness and undelicately. Read it because of the absolute polarised reviews. Im at 1.5.
currently reading the following
1.An Equal Music - I'd loved it when I'd first read it.
2. Loveless
3. Fear Me -An ott depraved , super abusive book with a cover that's always drawn me to it. I wonder why and what's the purpose if such books.but it's a part of a challenge .
4. Started with Midnighr by Beverly Jenkins - but will have to juggle around. again for the same challenge - bk written bu African American or with Black mcs.
I've a horrid feeling I'm.not going to finish off my challenge this month .):

Leena, You're on a roll!
Let us know how you find Loveless. I really liked it. :)

Then there is the misogyny of Schopenhauer. Very depressing. It is a reminder that a clever 8th grader knows more about the human condition than the finest minds of Victorian times.

True, that. Looking forward to reading mostly English books, in the 300 pages range.

Hope it gets better, Luffy. When something like that happens to me, I just pick up some mystery read. :)

I tried to keep it short, but it ended up a bit long. Sigh!

Thank you for the advice. I am due a good mystery. :)

Welcome. Have fun!

On the bright side, I went and got myself a smart bookshelf and got brand new books *while my tbr laughs at me*

How are you liking Persuasion , Visalakshi ? It's quite a sweet book . I have reached the last chapter and am wishing the book didn't have to end so soon .

I'm still reeling from it. Someone described it so aptly - it's like a new form of Copernican Revolution has happened in my mind.
Recommended to hard sci-fi lovers.

This might not be the forum, but I couldn't help sharing it. It showcases a beautiful futuristic building.

Currently reading: The Last Christmas in Paris by Hazel Gaynor.its a WW1 historical. The prose is beautiful ,but I'm only 30 pages in:)

@Savita: Yeah, that building is pretty cool. :D
@Leena - Hope the bad book run gets over soon. You also have march BOTM to look forward to. :)
@Em - Yeah, want to read but don't want to read feeling. :D
Try a novella! Emergency Skin. It's SHORT!
Btw, how do you guys rate when there're two sides of you who want to rate the book on opposite side of the scale.
For ex: By my recent reading exp, as a feminist I wanted to give it less but as a genre lover I wanted to give it more.
What do you do in such cases - take the average or take either side?

That's a good way of averaging.
Yes, not the author's opinions but what I meant was the book/character's. Like clashing views (reader & book) might also impact the overall enjoyment right? It does become subjective in that sense.

You mean an annoying character in a book whose views are the opposite of yours? Whose behaviour you don't like. Something on those lines?

Something like that.
Not exactly one character, because that way almost every story might have that person and it's fine.
But the tone of the book. Say, almost everyone is racist or they objectify females for no reason (specifically the ones that are written in 21th century) and that effects the reading experience because you're wondering 'how's that even relevant or it makes no sense in the current context or do they really think that'.
Most of the times, I average it out. Unless, some book happens to be really disappointing or repulsive to me, then it'll get lower rating.
'We the living' looks interesting. How's it? Historical philosophy throughout?
