Nathan (nathan-93) | 554 comments I usually have paperbacks/Kindle next to me. I would read a couple of pages, switch to another genre etc. Or in the Kindle, i keep switching.

I used to read a lot of manga/manhwa/manhua.

Now good quality ones are not there. Most are repetitive since 2019😴

Yeah, I have heard about webtoon. Haven't tried it though.

Wattpad, it does have few gems actually or 'had' would be apt because the authors remove their stories once they do get published, so the others left are mostly duds which can get bit irritating if you're looking for something good.

Quotev...I have read for few weeks (this was in 2012, I guess). It's similar to Wattpad, Leena.

Thanks Leena, I'll pick a few to read from this.

Wrapped up The Yearbook yesterday. When I had started I so thought it to be Mean Girls but it turns out to be so much more. this is something that I'd recommend to my friends.

Started The Wheel of Osheim, final book in Red Queen's War trilogy. Hoping that it will tie loose threads nicely and will be a stratifying end to the story.

on other things, what are the massive tomes i.e. books with more than 700 page count, that impressed you and the ones that disappointed you?

you are a hardcore sci-fi fan!! I have never read any Stephenson.

ha... you are on minority about GoT. :P but on a serious note, I think first three books in ASOIAF are really good and Martin should have stopped there. next two books are great character study with nothing crucial happening to move the plot forward. Also, what put you off so much?

message 526: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nathan-93) | 554 comments The sheer amount of useless information and character intros.
I agree first two books were good considering the abundance of info. But that itself was the catalyst to avoid reading the rest of Asoiaf fully.

I have so many tomes that I loved

A Suitable Boy, one of those books that I dared not touch because of the title and length but kicked myself for not picking early.

Count of Monte Cristo - it doesn't need any explanation

Lonesome Dove - this was something that I would not like but the book made me a fan.

A Column of Fire - Why did he even write this? Pillars of Earth does not need a follow up let alone a third book.

The Last Mortal Bond and The Light of All That Falls, finale should be engaging and something that keep you on edge but these just bored me to death.

message 529: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nathan-93) | 554 comments Speaking of scifi, I thoroughly enjoyed I,Robot by Isaac Asimov.

Had a paperback, dont know where I've kept it.

message 530: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments 1. The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson impressed me a lot. It's a continuation of The Girl who Played with Fire which many people were raving about but didn't meet my expectation. So I was apprehensive about Hornet's book. 742 pages long as well. I wasn't sure whether the book could sustain my interest throughout the book. Turned out to be a fantastic book without any boring moments.

2. Bag of Bones by Stephen King was an utter disappointment. 736 pages long. I quit it at 127 pages. Book cover looked spooky and enigmatic and the book back vignette was also interesting. I just didn't like the way the story progressed. Too descriptive for my liking. Lots of uninteresting things were mentioned in the book. Conversations between characters were flat. The spooky part was dragging too much and failed to scare me. The book became a chore to read and I decided to quit.

Nathan (nathan-93) | 554 comments CoMC is a classic. I have a hardcover. Safely stored. I agree, no explanation needed for that!

Will check A Suitable Boy

In the past one year, I have read only few larger ones
Most of them are translations.
Here:
1. A Little Life - Heart wrenching. Not because of all the misery but because of all the soulful kindness (not pity, just genuine kindness) and support Jude gets. I'll stop myself here. Sigh! Maybe I'll blab about it in a late review.

2. Crime and Punishment - I liked it, I would have liked it more if this was different translation. Might reread in future with a different one.

3. War and Peace - Learnt my lesson and researched the various translations and picked up Anthony Briggs. Glad that I did.

4. Count of Monte Cristo - Rightly said, no explanations!

Coming to my current read, Recursion. So far, just wow! Crazy.

I heard "IT" by King is great. Personally, I haven't read though because I can't imagine thrillers being 1100+ pages or even 500+ pages long. I feel like most horror/thriller storylines lose their charm if they are tomes.

message 535: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nathan-93) | 554 comments @Bookworm :I have tried to read IT, stopped halfway. Dragged it out so much, that I was like no. I can't do this any further.

Recursion is crazy. I agree.

message 536: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments Bookworm, if I had to read a tome that long I better read books A Suitable Boy, Cryptonomicon, Pillars of the earth or the Baroque Cycle. I am afraid SK probably drags it too much in IT. How else the book is 1100 pages long. :-)

Thanks for sharing Recursion out here, else I would have never known about it.
Now, I want to try Dark Matter. Not sure, if I'm ready for that today itself.

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Finished Recursion. It had minor cons (for me) but pros out-weighed them and also it felt both long and short to me in it's own right. Recommended to all sci-fi readers. So, 4.5 * rounded up to 5.

@Leena
Sure sure absolutely!! I would love to share a complete review. I must say the book is very well written!!! Ofcourse, since Roberts had to write it thrice as the guards in his prison tore the previous two editions. XD
but the depth to which he describes his surroundings and observations are worth the read!
Its completely different from what I had in my mind like I thought it might be another story of every foreigner highlighting their spiritual journey but wow...thank god I was wrong

For me first book was just too good, sequels were great but never touched the brilliance of first book. I have 4-6 but am afraid of what if they are not as good as the original work.

I have read IT, Shinning, 11/22/63 by King. All three massive tomes and they all start with a blast, specially 11/22/63 but it's the middle that i find hard to keep up with. I feel like they dragged a lot in mid but gained the momentum back around 75-80% mark. And i have heard that most of his tomes suffers with same slow middle. On the other hand i really enjoyed Misery and The Institute, both were of the shorter length by King standards.

I have read only The Idiot and loved it. I read the penguin Classics edition. But the general consensus is that if you are reading a Dostoyevsky must go for a Pevar & Volokhonsky translation. I have The Brothers Karamazov, another penguin Classics edition because I am obsessed with them. Once i read them, i am planning to go for Pevar & Volokhonsky translations. Which translation did you read?
