Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I'm afraid I was disappointed by Dominic Smith's latest historical fiction, The Electric Hotel. It's clear he's done a lot of research, but it was a mistake trying to include all of it. For the first 3/4 of the book, I was bored: some radical editing would improve the read, but film history fans may be enthralled...

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments Die Trying by Lee Child is the second in the popular Jack Reacher series. Reacher is a larger-than-life, modern-day knight errant, trying to save us all from each other. Lots of action!

Dale Renton (dalerenton) After reading "Killing Floor" I decided to take a look at "The Enemy" - purportedly the first (chronologically) of the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child. I've now been informed (thanks Patty!) there are other, earlier Reacher tales. Anyway - here is my review:

These are the books that made me a fan of Bernard Cornwell (I think I've now read everything he's written!). Great reading.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments With The World That We Knew, American author Alice Hoffman turns her literary talents to the plight of Jews in France and the kindness and bravery of those who saved them during WW2. And of course, some added magic with a very unusual golem.
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster.

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments While reading The Invention of Wings, I was reminded of a wonderful short story about a family quilt I read last year called Everyday Use, by Alice Walker, who wrote The Color Purple.

I also included a link to the story online (free).

Kerri_M | 590 comments I am part way through two books A Few Right Thinking Men (Sulari Gentill) and Among the Mad (Jacqueline Winspear)

As sometimes happens through pure coincidence, they are both set at the same time in history - early 1930's, Great Depression, rise of fascism (in Australia in the first book, in England in the second)

What struck me straight away is that while I know quite a bit about the fascist movement in England in the 30's, including the names of the major players and the groups, I knew NOTHING about the same thing happening in Australia! It was completely ignored in any history I was taught at school, have never seen a TV show or movie about it, and this is the first book I have read about it.

So I have been googling, and Troving and trying to educate myself about it while reading both books.

I love when reading a (fictional) book leads me to learn something about history of which I knew nothing.

Just sharing my thoughts.

By the way, this is my first Sulari Gentill book, and I am loving it! :)

Kerri the one before the one you're reading (a short prequel - The Prodigal Son) is free on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Prodigal-Son-R...

I love her books and I'm glad you're enjoying your first! It's a real pleasure to read about Rowly and his friends and the 1930s history of Australia :)
