message 251: by Céline (new)

Céline | 1 comments Hi, I'm Céline and I am new here!
I live in the UK but originally from France and I love books but wish I had more time to read. Being a teacher means I haven't got much spare time but I have decided 2019 is the year I reclaim my life and that starts by going back to my favourite hobby, which is reading. I have aimed to read 12 books this year as a starting point, but I want to go way beyond that if time allows. I love variety in what I read so can go from the classics to biographies to YA fiction to comedy to self help etc.. Read both French and English books.

Any recommendations?

message 252: by Ariana (new)

Ariana | 9 comments Hello fellow book lovers!

My name is Ariana and I am from New York City. I found this page just by randomly browsing the group discussions icon at the top of the page. I love reading YA fantasy and fiction books, they are by far my favorite. I also love self-development books and memoirs or biographies from interesting people but I prefer to listen to those makes me feel more connected to their story. And of course, last but not least my goal is to read 36 books this year!

I'm glad I found this group and cannot wait to discuss more with my fellow book lovers!

message 253: by Rira (new)

Rira | 28 comments Hello everyone, I'm Barira. I am from Chicago. I really love reading, whether it is articles or books. My favorite genres are fantasy, fiction, mystery/thriller, and romance. This year my goal is to read a hundred books. I used to have time to read more but not so much anymore. In 2017, I read around 134 books, but 2018 that number decreased to 87. I look forward to achieving my goal this year! I hope to find some new cool books to read!

Connie (conniecav) | 6 comments My name is Connie and I live in Tomball, Texas, just northwest of Houston. I am excited to start this challenge. I enjoy audio books, mystery, suspense, and historical fiction. I tend to listen to the same genre(s), so in addition to setting a goal of 25 books in 2019, I am also going to try to read at least half of the books in this challenge:

Challenge categories:

1) Book you can read in a day.
2) Children's classic you haven't read.
3) Book you bought at a thrift or dollar store.
4) A book from the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge.
5) A Book set in your home state.
6) A fairy tale re-telling.
7) Book from an author in your local area.
8) You've seen the movie/tv show; now read the book.
9) A book you bought solely based on the cover.
10) A Book you're embarrassed you haven't read yet.
11) Fiction or non-fiction book based on a real event/time period (i.e. WWII )
12) A book involving a heist.

Bonus: You can use these if you finish the first 12 challenges or you can substitute these for one of the challenges above.

A) Book with a protagonist with the same name as you.
B) Book published a decade ago, in 2009.
C) Book with 500+ pages.

But my first book is The Girl With Seven Names, which does not fit any of these categories!

Kyra (dojipengin) | 28 comments Hi! :)
My name is Kyra, I've joined this group by having a look at groups that I could join as I was no member of any group at that time.

My reading goal is very little, because I'm a slow reader, so five books for 2019 will do as a challenge for me. 😅
I'll try to get motivation for said challenge in this group as well. :)

I like books of the genre non-fiction or books that are fictional, but still somehow based on real circumstances.

message 261: by Bücherwurm (new)

Bücherwurm | 1 comments Hello dear book lovers,

This is Yesim Sultan from Turkey, Isparta (City of Roses). I am in the Academic world of literature, doing my PhD in English Literature; and my wish is to do more extra reading besides my academic reading.. I am here to be inspired by book lovers’ suggestions on fictional and factional novels and life-writing. I have already been a member of goodreads for, I guess, more than a year. But decided to use it more frequently in 2019.

Happy New Year and a happy new beginning, let us enjoy the world of reading and multiply our inner selves with the endless stories presented to us in a golden plate.

Carla | 2 comments Hello fellow readers!

Very glad to find a group of peers of avid reading.

Seems to be an activity that is heading towards extinction...

😭

I am a 49 year old Brazilian diplomat with one kid and a chaotic reading habit.

I read in Portuguese (native language), Italian (barely fluent), English, Spanish and French.

Would love finding fellow readers in French that would recomend contemporary fiction and non fiction.

I hope goodreads will help me organize and catalog my reading - past and present.

I also intend to find new authors and books to love by taking a look at other fellow readers in this group.

Have a nice 2019!

jade (jadevic17) | 2 comments hey people. my name's jade

I live in the Eastern US. I'm in high school and read a lot of YA and thriller books. I found this group a while ago, as the 2017 challenge,, but I never really participated. Hope I read more this year and stay active on here on goodreads. My goal is going to be 100 books, and I will do my best to update as much as possible.
:)

message 265: by Richard (new)

Richard Craven What's your PhD topic? My literary interests are Elizabethan & Jacobean drama, the 18th century Augustan poets, the Victorian novel, and 20th century classical literary fiction.

message 266: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Hi everyone, I'm Meghan and I've planned to read 25 books in 2019. I didn't want to set any unrealistic goals because I think reading should be fun in the first place! Over the past year I really re-discovered my old passion for books and I hope this year I'll be able to make reading a daily habit again. Hoping to find a lot of interesting books and interesting people to discuss them with here :)

message 267: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Everyone!
My name is Jessica and I am from the United States on the east coast. I joined this group because I love to read and Keep track of the books I have read over the course of the year. I enjoy reading fantasy, paranormal, romance, reverse harem, really anything that I can get lost in.

My goal this year is to read at least 280 books.

message 268: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Hello! I'm Ashley and I'm from Connecticut. I found this group just from browsing. I like different kinds of books. Horror, memoirs, historical fiction, fantasy, fiction in general, nonfiction. I'll read almost anything. I decided that this will be the year that I set a goal for myself, because over the past few years I've unfortunately gotten out of the habit of reading. I recently won $500 in used book gift cards, so I need to start reading what I've been purchasing. The goal I set for myself this year is 15, and I'm so excited!

message 269: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Mallory | 1 comments Hi !

I am Charlotte. I am an aspiring writer who is close to finishing her first book, looking to query by fall of this year.

I am new to writing communities, with Wattpad being my first one that I joined in August 2018. I currently have my WIP novel on there, and find it's a great way to crowd source some feedback.

I realized I didn't really have anyone to share my story with and so that's what led me to Wattpad, and finally I realzied goodreads had a thriving forum!

My goal is I want to meet other authors, read more books, and just get involved with the writing community.

I want to read more books this year, as I have been focusing so much on writing. Overall, I love books that pull me in and aren't too wordy. I don't like to drown in prose. I love a lot of genres - Romance/Paranormal/Fantasy/YA/Mystery/Horror/Thriller or any story that makes me feel like I met the MC and went on a journey with them.

I'm looking forward to reading more this year!

message 270: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Palzewicz | 3 comments Hi Everyone! I love reading through the introductions and seeing where people are from and what they like to read, etc. You all seem like lovely people. :-)

I'm Melissa from Maine, USA. I've always been an avid reader but have also always been challenged by having 4 children and a full-time intense career. My kids are all teenager/adults now and I took a job last year that really opened up my time to explore hobbies. My favorite hobby is reading so it's awesome! This is my first year doing reading challenges. I'm doing Goodreads and POPSUGAR. On Goodreads, I am shooting for 104 books.

I read almost anything. Classics, Contemporary Fiction, Historical Fiction, YA, Non-fiction. I'm not a fan of horror (because I am a chicken) or true crime (again, chicken).

I look forward to reading with you all!

message 271: by Sol (new)

Sol (sunbaby2012) | 14 comments Hello everyone:

My name is Sol and I'm from Miami, FL. I have a pretty eclectic taste in books and am willing to try any genre out. My favorites are most likely fantasy and historical fiction. I found this group by searching groups on goodreads. I have been on goodreads since December 2011 and this is the first group I have ever joined. I joined because I would like to read more books like I used to. Currently my reading goal is 30 books. Last year I started with 10 books and when I made that goal, I went to 15, and kept raising it by 5 until I got to 30 by the end of December. Since I read 30 books last year, I want to read at least that many and maybe even more.

message 272: by Britain (new)

Britain Campbell (britainmic) Hi! My name is Britain Campbell and I’m from Louisiana. My favorite book genre is mystery and thriller, but I like others as well. I found this group because I saw that a booktuber that I like is in your group and I thought it would be a good one to join. My goal this year is to read at least 80 books. I’m typically a fast reader, sometimes reading 4 books within a week, so I feel like it’s a good goal for me. I’m excited to be in a group that incorporates a lot of things for its members to do and different challenges as well.

message 273: by Lars (last edited Jan 04, 2019 01:33PM) (new)

Lars (hellesbunt) | 5 comments Hey there,

I'm Lars, living in Cologne, Germany and I started reading again only last year.
Before that sopped for several years because I couldn't find the time. That is what I wanted to change last year and, even more so, this year. That is also why I joined this group. ;)

The other thing is that I stopped reading at some point, but never really stopped buying books, what means that I do have a "pile of shame" that is not too small.

You can call me a literary omnivore … as long as it is fiction. And as long as it doesn't contain too much fantasy or scifi.

Well … nearly a literary omnivore then.

I set my goal quite low, wanna read 12 books this year, let's start it slowly.

In case of questions – feel free! Really looking forward to the challenge and meeting new people.

message 274: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in the Midwest (US) and I am so excited to become a member of this group! I've never been in a book club before and am excited to have the opportunity to discuss books with others. I love YA, thriller, fantasy, mystery, & dystopian but am open to reading any good book. I don't know how many books I read last year because I just started using Goodreads, but would like to read at least 20 books this year. I love Dean Koontz and am currently reading The Whispering Room (Jane Hawk #2).
Happy Reading!

Kate Baxter Greetings to you all and best wishes for the New Year!
My name is Kate and I'm actually an east coast girl (Boston) who moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA 28 years ago.
I am new to this group and have set a goal of 55 books to be read this year. It is only in the last 10 years that I began enjoying reading for pleasure. (Previously, I mostly enjoyed sight-reading music in my spare time.) I enjoy literary fiction, mysteries, history and well researched historical fiction. My husband and I are 18th century re-enactors from a Scottish regiment of the French and Indian War (North American theater of the Seven Years War). We spend a fair amount of time reading and researching books about that period in history. Please feel free to recommend titles of books you've enjoyed regarding this subject. Thank you. -Kate-

Vivek Singh (wanderingsoul16) | 34 comments Hello Everyone, I'm from India

While I read multiple genres with an aim of assimilating multiple perspectives, dystopian sci-fi is hands down my favorite genre. In 2018, I started with a modest target of 12 books but slowly read a lot more and ended the year with 51 books in total (I guess small wins do matter!).
In 2019, I'm again starting with 12 books target but hope to read at least 1 book per week (52 books in total). I love discussing books and ideas and I hope this group would be a great platform for the same.
Looking forward to an enriching year of reading and interesting discussions :-)

Phillip Ratliff | 9 comments I’m Phil from Birmingham, AL. I’m laying off of Facebook and reconnecting with reading for enjoyment after several years of reading only work related material. I’m in a graduate theology program that requires research, so I want to read on that research topic in a less functional way (to satisfy interest, not necessarily to add material to my research topic). I also want to read more Christopher Priest, Tolkien, and Lewis this year. Finally, as a small business owner, I’m looking for book recommendations on creating fun, collaborative work environments and growing my business.

Looking forward to chatting with you all. xx

isa | 2 comments Hello everyone, my name is isa. I am 19 years old and I live in France.

I used to read a lot when I was young. When I entered high school I eventually stopped reading actively as I was being crushed under the weight of school’s pressure and work.

Now I’m in college, still overwhelmed by an inconsiderate amount of work, but finally determined to pick up good reading habits in 2019.

I like reading romance the most, because I’m a hopeless romantic.

My goal for this year is to read 30 books! I really hope I’ll manage that.

Good luck for everyone and happy readings :)

message 288: by Alice (new)

Alice Mc | 9 comments Hello everyone! I'm Alice and live in the English Lake District. I've always been a big reader, all kinds of fiction (but I especially love a good thriller). I'm from a medical background so that's also a big reading interest for me.

I've set my reading goal at 25, which I didn't quite manage last year! I started a Masters degree last September, and consequently the amount of time I had for reading severely crashed! I'm hoping this group might help me stay on target. Looking forward to chatting with you all!

message 289: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (booksandbawoos) Hi my name is Sarah! I just joined like...two minutes ago because I need something to keep myself accountable to my reading. I mean, let's be honest, you can lose track of time if you don't remind yourself how many books you have finished. :)

- Where are you from?: Well, I'm from Palmyra, Pennsylvania in the US. Small town living!

- What kinds of books do you like to read?: I will read anything but I usually gravitate towards fantasy, sci-fi and mysteries. As long as it keeps my attention I will read it!

- How did you find our group?: Just randomly browsing the groups on GoodReads.

- What's your reading goal?: I'd like to read at least 35 books, but hopefully more!

message 291: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Jones | 1 comments Hello there! I’m Kayla, from South Carolina in the United States, but I’m currently living in Germany for about 3 years. I have severe ADHD, and with it comes hyperfocus and no focus. When I get hyperfocused, I can finish a book in 2 days or less, and when I get to the point where I can’t focus at all, I could go an entire year between reading chapters.

My goal this year is to read 50 books before January. When I was in school, I’d read constantly, and all of my book goals were in the hundreds. I once read 350 books in one year! It makes me really sad to reflect on that time, cause while I was reading, I understand why I spent so much time doing it. To keep from getting into details, my home life wasn’t great, and now that I’m an adult, living with my husband and my home life is great, I don’t seem to be reaching for my old friends to comfort me as much. I’d like to start learning to read for pleasure instead of having to use it as an escape, after all these years.

Sorry about the paragraphs, I’m not sure how to condense it down, haha.

message 292: by Stacia (last edited Jan 07, 2019 01:04AM) (new)

Stacia | 1 comments Hi everyone!

I live in Montana in the US and I'm joining this group because I want to better my communication skills in regards to my thoughts/reactions to the books I'm reading. I'm currently a graduate student in creative writing and taking graduate-level literature courses for the first time ever (my bachelor's degree was in the sciences... so I'm still figuring out exactly how to navigate the world of the arts in academia).

Last year I read 52 books and this year I'm pushing myself to read 75 books! I love all genres but especially contemporary literary fiction, memoir, science writing, and the occasional thriller or fantasy novel. I'm interested in reading books featuring LGBTQ+ themes, nature/ecological writing, themes around death, dying, and mortality, and writings about people who are passionate about the craft of writing.

I am Srutha. I am from India. I am currently interning, and waiting for the results from US Universities, where I have applied for PhD.
I am open to reading pretty much all genres. Over the last year, my book reading has reduced, though I do read a lot on the Internet. I joined Goodreads a few days ago so as to keep track of my reading, and to see how I am able to complete challenges, for I love them.

My aim is to see where my challenge of reading what I can this year goes.

message 294: by Katia (last edited Jan 07, 2019 02:18AM) (new)

Katia M. Davis (katiamdavis) Hello, I found this group a few weeks ago and thought it would be good to keep me on track for my 2019 reading goals. To answer the questions:

Where are you from?

I was born in NSW, Australia but have lived in Yorkshire, England, UK since 2001.

What kinds of books do you like to read?

I enjoy reading both non-fiction and fiction.

Non-fiction
WWI and WWII, particularly to do with Intelligence
Mythologies and Folklore including witches/the paranormal - particularly local to where I live
Archaeology (I used to be an archaeologist)
Women in history and warfare
LGBT
Theoretical physics (but written for the layperson)
Accident/disaster and air crash investigations
Victorian history
War memoirs particularly US Civil War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam (more of an interest in Australian forces than US), Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan (more of a focus on British forces than US, particularly War Medicine).

Fiction
Horror/paranormal
Fantasy
Thriller
Action/Adventure
Historical
Lesfic

How did you find our group?

I was browsing the groups looking for one to join.

What's your reading goal?

I try and set my goal higher every year. I made it to 160 in 2018, so I have set a goal of 170 in 2019. If I finish early, I'll just keep going and would be extra happy if I broke 200.

You can see my personal reading challenge link here:

Katia - The Paginator 2019.

I upped my goal since I started it :-D

I'm Niall(27) from Ireland. The northern SE coast to be exact. I've joined this group to encourage me to read more as I tend to start a book and take forever to finish it, also my book buying habits are getting a bit out of hand and need to read the 40+ on my TBR 😂. My target for the year is 30 books, not as impressive as some of the targets on here but if I get even close to that I'll be happy. I enjoy reading YA/Fantasy however I'm open to suggestions and recommendations. I need to focus more on books this year and give my Netflix account a break.

Happy Reading everyone.

I'm working on stretching myself in terms of what kinds of books I read, while not making my goals so regimented that reading is no longer fun. I read mostly fiction, but one of my goals is to read a non-fiction book each month that will help me to grow in some aspect of my life.
