 - ̗̀ n i x y o l o g i s t ̖́- (hoechlin) | 3 comments Hey, I'm Nixy and residing in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada) - aka the only Ontario city without snow right now; yes I'm sad about that. We haven't seen snow since November 16th 2018. I want my winter :(

Enough about the weather though. I always struggle with the question, "what sort of books do you read?!" because there's no specific genre for me. I usually say "Well, my favourite authors are Irvine Welsh and Chuck Palahniuk, but I also read some William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac and then some other stuff..." and it gets complex. Did find out recently that Irvine Welsh and Chuck Palahniuk are considered "transgressive fiction" so I guess that's my answer?

I found the group because I was trying to figure if someone had written a Wordpress plugin/widget for the little personal widget you get when you put your book goal into the challenge page. I didn't find what I was looking for (might have to write it myself) but this group was the first Google result!

My reading goal was initially 12 books - one book a month - but I tend to put things off (go ADHD) and get distracted writing, so I'm putting 24 down. Two books in one month for a year. Should be doable since I used to be able to read a book in a day.

This was a long intro. Sorry, not sorry :D

message 352: by Tonya Marie (new)

Tonya Marie (tpinks315) | 30 comments Hiiiiii!!! I'm Tonya - originally from Texas, currently in (barely) upstate New York. I absolutely love YA fiction, especially dystopian and supernatural genres; however, I am all over the map with my interests. I also read classics, adult romance and erotica, history, mystery, and autobiography/memoir. I found this group by searching out those with similar interests or in similar areas. I work WAY too much and have a tendency to turn on the TV too often so I'm using goodreads and this group to help keep me accountable to my reading goals.

My 2019 goal is 24 books (or 2 per month - easier in chunks). My "life" goal is 100 biographies by the time I'm 40... I turn 36 in March and have only read 6 - eeek! If anyone has suggestions on books for my life goal, please feel free to share.

Thanks for having me!

Carol-Anne | 7 comments Hello!
New member here - I have read all my life, but for some reason only just found Goodreads!
I am from Fife in Scotland and to be honest I read just about anything from classics to trash :)
I do like a good crime novel though - and I am a bit of a Potter head.
Looking forward to the challenge - set myself a book a week, hopefully that's do-able.
Please say hello - I'm just getting used to this and not sure I'm doing it all right.

message 354: by Amber (new)

Amber | 21 comments I'm Amber and I live in Virginia, USA. I've technically been a member of Goodreads for several years, but this is my first year really getting into it. I've never been part of a book club or done challenges, but I'm really excited this year. I decided to try the annual challenge to help keep track of my reading better and then I found this group associated with it. I'm using the Popsugar challenge to help me reach my goal. I set a conservative goal of 30, though I hope to read more than that. I unfortunately don't have as much time to read as I would like due to being a full time working mother of 4. I am always on the lookout for good books and already I've found far too many (is there such a thing) to add to my list.

I'm happy to try just about anything, though I am not generally a fan of non-fiction as reading is my escape. I tend to gravitate towards YA, anything set in space, urban fantasy, and dystopian fiction. But you can find me reading mystery/thrillers as well.

Alyshia Meyers-Christensen | 32 comments Hi all, I'm Alyshia and I'm from Alberta, Canada.

I used to be an avid reader, but, over the last few years, my reading has declined and I'm hoping to change that. When it comes to books, I'll give any book a try, so I'm always looking for suggestions.

This year, I've set myself a goal of reading at least 10 books this year.

message 358: by Anne (new)

Anne Louise | 1 comments Hi group

I’m Anne, I’m 34 soon be 35 in a couple of months. I have 2 children aged 6 and 2 years and husband who works away a lot.

I love read and buy books. I don’t really have hobbies as such as my children take up all my time. If anyone has read “why mummy drinks” you are looking at a play by play of my life in a book.

Although I don’t have a hobby and when my head isn’t stuck in a book I like to crochet. Now I sound old and sad, sorry.

Anyway that pretty much me. So HI.

message 359: by Narmeen Naqvi (new)

Narmeen Naqvi | 14 comments Hey folks!I'm Narmeen from Pakistan.Reading has been my passion since I was about 6.Any book that comes my way gets devoured.I particularly enjoy classics, mysteries, contemporaries, coming of age stories and fantasies XD So yea...Almost everything.

I found this group because I searched for groups with challenges and this was the one that caught my eye.I find that I tend to dnf books a lot when they don't seem to be very interesting or when they're not going in a direction I like.So I wanna step out of my comfort zone and read really important books as well as books that are just fun to read.

My reading goal for this year is a 100 books, which I think is overdoing it a little, but here's to hoping.

Brenda Pearson | 8 comments HI all, I'm in Halifax N.S.
Doing the challenge for the 3rd time in a row, - I know I'm not reading as much as I like to but I download as much as I can in my IPAD, which I love. Besides writing my own Romance novel and novella, my second passion is reading. I do have the favorite Author that I cannot live without in my Library.
My goal again this year is 70, well I'm hoping anyway.

Good Luck to everyone Goals this year.
Cheers

message 365: by Greg (new)

Greg (gschmitty40) | 7 comments Hello everyone! My name is Greg. I love reading all sorts of books, but right now I've been into Historical Fiction, Espionage, and Non-Fiction right now.

I found this group just searching through the community webpage. I just joined GoodReads and thought this be a cool way to get introduced to new books.

My goal this year is to do 50 books! I've already finished 1 so far (Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews). I am currently reading Dope Sick by Beth Macey.

message 366: by Haley (new)

Haley Thomas (hlythms) | 182 comments Hello everyone! I just recently joined this group, and I'm very excited to share in all of these wonderful reading challenges with you all!

I'm from London, Ontario (Canada), and I'm a grade 6 teacher. I would say that half of my reading involves books that I can share with my students, and the other half is what I truly enjoy reading (my guilty pleasure books).

Genres that I'm usually drawn towards are Young and New Adult, Mystery/Thriller/Suspense, Romance, Contemporary.
I'm not really one for Nonfiction, but it's something I would like to dip into more this year.

My current favourite book is The Simple Wild by K.A Tucker. Beautiful story - it's not often that a book can make me cry or make me want to reread it instantly!

My goal this year is to read 50 books, which will not include books read in class. These books are solely for me to read and enjoy on my own time. Along with that, I am aiming to read 30,000 pages. I started off the year strong, having read 5 books in the first week, but now that I'm back to work I'm already finding it difficult to dedicate as much time as I'd like to reading. We'll see how it goes!

If you like historical fiction, may I suggest two novels by Charles Dickens:-
Tale of Two Cities - about the French Revolution and Robespierre's Terror.
Barnaby Rudge - about the 1780 Gordon Riots.

Hi Keri!
I am also from Wisconsin! I have always loved to read and envy you a little on your love of travel. I'm more of a homebody and don't love airplanes and the thought of flying over vast expanses of water scare me. :) I love to read thrillers, mysteries, YA, fantasy, or anything else that grabs my attention!

Happy reading!

message 370: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 1 comments Hi everyone,
I'm Cindy. I live in Northern Lower Michigan, just over an hour below Michigan's Upper Penninsula.

I love to read a wide variety of books, and also enjoy writing my own stories. Anything from romance, science fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, mystery, and sometimes non-fiction.

I found this group through a notification on GoodReads.

My reading goal for this year is 25 books. I would like it to be more, but have to be realistic too. I teach 1st grade, and am working on my second Masters Degree full time, which doesn't leave me a lot of time for reading for enjoyment.

I've been an avid reading since I was a young child, and have been listening to audiobooks on my commute. It's better than no stories at all, but still not the same for me as reading the books myself, for me at least.

message 371: by Akuma (last edited Jan 13, 2019 03:39PM) (new)

Akuma | 45 comments Not especially good at this but i'll make an attempt none the less

I usually keep to myself, but feel free to call me Akuma (a name i've been using online for over a decade)

I liked reading JP novels alot, but in recent years have been branching out more, checking on the classics, and newer novels alike and now have a room filled with books. So i like to think i have a somewhat wide range of books i like to indulge in (although light novels are still a big interest of mine)

I found this group purely because i was hoping to find somewhere that'd help me find more books to enjoy. And if possible engage in some sort of conversation about them at some point. (As I don't know anyone that reads as a hobby)

I don't really have a goal. Just to enjoy the books i'm reading.
But if i had a mild goal, finish the pile of Manga i brought (kanji isn't terrible in some) or if i wanted to punish myself... Finish that novel i've been trudging through for over a year. Or at the very least, reach page 50... -_- I hate kanji

Anyway i hope that serves as a decent introduction. (I hope it's not too long winded)
I look forward to seeing the recommendations here and attempting to expand my tastes further

Marti Ann OMalley | 7 comments Hi, I am Martio. I want to try the 40 book Popsugar reading challenge- the one that starts with "a book becoming a movie in 2019." I think that I have one of the challenges done with the January book of the month. Ready Player One is a book which revolves around a game. I am 42 years old, and a female. You can call me Marti.

message 373: by Alana (new)

Alana Wilson (alanawilson) Hi! My name is Alana. I live in Eastern Oregon. Wife of 18 years, mother of two boys (16 and 17); I am a nurse, my specialty is hospice, but I am currently working from home as a Medical Case Manager. Feeder, walker, and belly scratcher to 4 dogs (Momma and her two pups; and a stray that found a forever home with us).

My favorite genre is Memoir and Biography. I enjoy Nonfiction; Literary Fiction; Cheesy quick love stories; I enjoy travel books, guides, and accounts of other's experiences with cultural immersion and successful journeys. First hand experiences with pilgrimage.

I am also finding I enjoy religious studies from around the world and how this affects aspects of modern life. What are those ancient rituals that have been done over generations and how and why do we still place value in them? Any book recommendations? This a new interest of mine.

I am doing the reading challenge for the first time this year. I have never kept track of the number of books I have read in a year, so I made the initial goal 52. I have read 5 so far this year.

I appreciated finding this active group on goodreads.

message 374: by Kris (new)

Kris | 3 comments Hi everyone, I’m Kris. I look forward to hearing from other readers and the books they are reading. I joined Goodreads 6 months ago and have a few private friends to share books with but am constantly searching for other gems out there. I have several shelves of unread books yet I’m always reading reviews and responses to what others are finding worth their time. I normally select fiction and am a sucker for historical fiction but also am thrilled to find good memoirs, biographies and mysteries. My reading challenge for 2019 is to read 50 books. I just read a nonfiction book for my January book club but was happy to finish that one. What’s next?

message 375: by Nate (new)

Nate Steblay (nate_steblay) I'm Nate, currently a grad student. I love love love fantasy books, they're my obsession. I heard about this group after my friend sent me the reading prompt for 2019. My reading goal is 35 books, which isn't much but school's a much higher priority! I'm also a very slow reader, much to my chagrin.

Dance to the music of time by Anthony Powell
Sword of honour trilogy by Evelyn Waugh
Patrick Melrose series by Edward St Aubyn
Parade's end by Ford Madox Ford
Rabbit quartet by John Updike
Palliser series by Anthony Trollope
Barchester Chronicles by Anthony Trollope

message 377: by Steph (new)

Steph (apoppyinthewind) | 9 comments Hello! I'm Steph and I'm from Newfoundland, Canada. When it comes to what I read I'm a huge comic fan, been sucked into cozy mysteries lately, love humorous books, and have been on a non-fiction kick with books about organizing, minimalism, and life experiences.

I found this group when I was browsing the goodreads groups and since I'm hoping to be more social on goodreads, I thought I'd join. My current goal is 12 books though I may increase it as the year goes on.

message 378: by Maran (new)

Maran | 9 comments Hey, hey, I'm Maran.

I'm from the Netherlands where I'm a Cognitive Neuroscience master student. I used to read a lot, but because of university I had to read a lot of dry scientific articles (not that they weren't interesting, but scientists are no writers) and I didn't have the energy to read anymore after being done with those articles. However, last year I started reading again and this year I'm participating in the Popsugar Reading Challenge.

So yeah, my goal for this year is to read 50 books. I mainly read fantasy, sci-fi, psychology, philosophy, and I'm working on the classics. Never romance though. I haven't found anything romance that I like (but I'm always open for suggestions, also regarding genres other than the ones mentioned).

Anyway, good luck to everyone and, more importantly, have fun!

message 379: by Megan (new)

Megan HI Maran! Im Megan, new here also. I am an undergraduate Psychology student also! :) My goal is to read 30 as I will be working and studying throughout the year. I read all types of genres and always like to try something new.

Kesley Smith (kesleysmith) | 1 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Kesley Smith.

I am originally from Calgary, Alberta, but currently living in Austin, Texas.

I usually like to read fiction, but have recently started reading a lot more genres. I have started reading a lot more non-fiction business books as well. As long as the book has a unique storyline that keeps my interest, I am always looking for recommendations.

Was introduced to the Goodreads challenge (this group) by a coworker.

My goal for 2019 is: 100 books

message 384: by ✿ lemon ✿ (new)

✿ lemon ✿ (lemonthelemon) Hello! My name is Lemya and I'm currently a student attending community college. I like to draw and read (of course). My preference of books is historical fiction, realistic fiction, and everything else to be honest! My goal is 15 books, and I hope to suprass it later on this year! An underlying goal I have this year is to read more memoirs. I hope we can become great friends in time!

message 385: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Gilbert | 7 comments Hello everyone! My name is Nicole and I live in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate, New York. This is the first time I have ever done this. In fact I didn't even know this was a thing until a couple of days ago. My plan is to read 50 books.

I love reading non fiction books especially history books. When I was a kid I read a lot of those illustrated classics and plan on reading the originals during this year. I also love science fiction especially the classics.

I really want to read books from different genres especially those that I might have never read. I am also rereading the Harry Potter series and hoping to read each book per month.

Lastly I love listening to audiobooks and will listen to most if not all though audio. I find this works out great as you can listen to book while doing various types of work. Thanks to my local library I can download a bunch of audiobooks as they can be quite expensive. I'm also hoping to get a library card at NYPL (New York Public Library) to get a better supply of books.

I would love different genre recommendations. If anyone has an intriguing genre I would love it!

Chanel Joyce | 19 comments Hello! My name is Chanel and I am from Illinois. I'm an undergrad student graduating at the end of this year and soon to be preparing for the GRE (please wish me luck!)

I love YA (it's a guilty pleasure) romance, thriller, dystopian, etc. I'm really open to anything though!

I was looking through groups because I'm just starting on goodreads, and thought this would be cool to join!

My reading goal is seventy books this year. This will be the first time I'm making a goal, but I honestly wrote down every book I'd want to read, and decided I'd shoot to do that this year.

message 390: by Viv (new)

Viv Hi, I am Viviane. I have always used Goodreads for checking books and reading reviews. The platform helped me to track the ones I want to read and record the ones I read in the past. In fact, I was looking for some book review when I found out this group. Then, well... I decided to push myself to 2019 Reading Challenge.
I have a very eclectic taste as many of you, however; I do love mystery books. :)
My goal for this year is not impressive because I used to read more, but I've being so busy that I will try only 10 books. If I hit the goal, I may go to 12.

Nicole Lim | 10 comments Hello! I'm Nicole, and I hail from sunny Singapore!

I'm an avid reader - I'll always have a book on hand no matter where I am! I'm also brand new to Goodreads, (wow trying to organize my shelf is a marathon!) so figuring I'm currently figuring out how I fit in this community as well.

This year, I've set my reading target as 20, but my goal besides reading more would be to participate more actively in book discussions/groups! Knowledge is much better shared after all! (:

I read everything from fantasy, to the classics, to biographies to YA, to fiction, although I must say that my favorite genre right now is contemporary classics.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you'd like a book recommendation, or even if you'd simply like to discuss books together!

Happy reading everyone!
