message 102: by Eli (new)

Eli Perriment | 19 comments Hi everyone, my name's Eli and I'm a uni student from the UK :)

I've always loved reading but found myself getting out of touch with it due to university work and questionable Netflix-binges instead. Now I'm spending a lot of time in hospital due to poor health, and have fallen back in love with reading now that I have unlimited time to devote to it.

My goal is to read a book a week, which is easily doable for me as long as I motivate myself to actually pick one up and start. Looking forward to a year filled with wonderful reads! :)

message 103: by Feli (new)

Feli (fee1235) Hi! I also just made a topic in the "2019 Personal Challenge: 26-50" post, but here I am again :).

I've only read 10 books this year, so next year I'm challenging myself to read 50 books. I've done this before in the past by always having a book (or ereader or phone) with me. So I'm hoping this group will give me the motivation to reach this goal again!

message 104: by Rosemary (last edited Dec 27, 2018 01:23PM) (new)

Rosemary Ward | 3 comments Greetings! I'm Ro from NJ. I am hoping to read 52 books this year - one per week. I enjoy classics from 19th century writers and current-day writers whose style is similar. Half my reading is from paper books and the other half is done through Audible. (I spend many hours in my car per week, hence the audio option.)

I read a great deal of nonfiction, too, with topics in education, learning, memory and cognitive science topics as favorites.

I almost always write a review of what I've read and somehow don't feel I've really finished reading a book unless I've written about my impressions of it. My reviews are in Goodreads and also on my blog (link in my bio).

I hope to find like-minded readers here; I am also eager to be introduced to new writers and new genres to enjoy!

Cheers!

Carol Neves (carol_neves) | 54 comments Hi!

I’m Caroline and I’m Brazilian.
I’ve recently completed a research on Virginia Woolf and the autobiographical space on her novel The Years, she is my favorite author.
I also love the classics as much as I love Harry Potter!

The 2018 challenge is the second I join, but I couldn’t complete it. So for 2019 I’ll keep the 40 books goal and I hope I can achieve it!

message 106: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments Hello eveyone!
I am not really new to the group, but as it has been about 5 years since I participated I thought best to introduce myself.

So I am Johanna from Finland, a mother for a 5 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. And yes ny 5 years of not reading comes from having kids and just not being able to read after that.

I read almost all kinds of books just as long as it 's fiction, but they do tend to fall in the genres romance and fantasy most often. These are some of my old favourites: Harry Potter books, Hunger Games, Twilight, The Book Thief, Slammed, Coraline, Fifty Shades of Grey, Forsaken
(Daughters of the Sea - Kristen Day), Little Women.

My goal is to read at least 6 books this year (which sounds definately not enough, but I'll be realistic!)

I would gladly take recommendations of must read romance books and fantasy and paranormal books of all kinds that have been great in the last 5 years or so!

message 107: by Amy (new)

Amy (ladyames20203) Hey I’m Amy and I’m Australian.
I used to love reading and I would read constantly but in recent years I haven’t. Maybe due to school, technology, or just disinterest, I’m not sure. I’ve always loved books with fantasy and supernatural themes but recently I’ve also gotten into mystery and psychological-thriller. Recently I haven’t been able to find a book that I have really loved but I hope that can change. This year is also going to be a busy year for me as I need to focus on my schoolwork so I’ve only set my goal at 5 books, however I’m probably to read a lot more than that.

Ilona | 4698 comments Welcome to the group everyone!

message 109: by Alysia (new)

Alysia | 33 comments Hi everyone,
I'm Alysia and I am from the US. I like to read Thriller and true crime novels. I found this group by googling new books to read and finding the Crime and Thriller group which had reading challenges and had me investigating more. I love to read and with a long daily commute audiobooks have become my best friend.

My initial 2019 reading goal was a book a month; however, in the past month I read 7 books so I upped the goal to 36 with the hopes to add more as the year progresses.

message 110: by Mahima (new)

Mahima | 3 comments Hey All! I am Mahima. I am from Delhi, India. I started reading novels
3 years back which made me more involved and broadened my perspective. But due to some reason I dropped reading and got more engaged in video streaming services. I have joined this group so I could be serious about my reading and set a proper goal for the coming year which will be to complete one book a week. Looking forward to have great discussions with the members. Also the recommendations. :)

message 111: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 1 comments Hi!
My name is Betsy, I’m 24 and from Mexico. I’ve always loved reading but only recently started trying to make it a regular habit. I like reading psychology related topics, fiction novels, and classics, also anything about women empowerment.
My goal for 2019 is 25 books, hopefully more!
Really excited to join this group, good luck to everyone in their 2019 goal!

message 112: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (mariannef) | 40 comments Hello, my name is Marianne and I am in the US. I like to read all types of fiction, except fantasy. Currently my favorite thing to do is listen to audio book memoirs by comedians. Billy Crystal and Martin Short were incredibly enjoyable! I like to read political commentary, as well as books about historical events and individuals. Classics are also a favorite, Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen are a couple of my top classic authors.
Last year I only read 31 after setting a goal of 100. I am going to set another goal of 100 and am looking forward to participating in this challenge!

message 114: by Andre (new)

Andre Van Vuuren | 2 comments Good morning everyone. I'm Andre and I'm from Botswana. I used be an avid reader but lost it over the years. In the last six months I have completely fallen back in love books! Wish i had never lost it in the first place.

I enjoy a bit of everything leaning towards fantasy, historical and non-fiction. My old favorite author was Bryce Courtenay. Thank you for this group and I am looking forward to being an active member!

message 115: by Yajahyra (new)

Yajahyra (ysarahy) | 16 comments Hello! My name is Yajahyra but everyone calls me yaya(much easier) lol I love reading but unfortunately 2018 was not a good year for me so I’ve neglected my bookshelf. My goal for 2019 is to at least read 40 books. Please feel free to talk to me ! It’s always much more fun when other people read along with you.

Marcus Maximilian Augustus (metal_movies_more) Damian, 40, New England
father first, connoisseur of: horror-comedy, trve mëtäl, ƿɪǯǯȧ & hot sauce

One hundred is my goal for this coming year (I'd managed 57 this past annum, but will apply more self-discipline in order to complete this go-round [I also consider myself a bit of a cinephile, so that medium too takes a large portion of my leisure time.].).
_____________

QUESTION:
Do books started in 2018, but finished in 2019 count for 2018 or 2019?
Also, do y'all know where such books will be applied in GoodReads official yearly "READING CHALLENGE"?

(For full disclosure, I am trying to game the system by front-loading it with several books I've partially finished this month.)

message 119: by Anna (new)

Anna (annabergb) Hi there! My name is Anna and I'm from Norway. I love to read pretty much all genres, all types of fiction but also history. Im currently a history student so obviously its an interest of mine. I joined this page a long time ago, but didn't use it. This year I'll be much more active. Good luck you everyone, and happy new year!! :-)

message 120: by Jared (last edited Dec 29, 2018 11:13AM) (new)

Jared (AngryBadgerZA) | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm Jared from Durban, South Africa. I used to read a lot but for the last couple of years I haven't been keeping up with it as much as I would like, especially moving with lots of books. I've ordered a Kindle which arrives early next month so hopefully that will help a lot.

As far as what I read goes, I'm farily spread out between different genres and authors. Fantasy, thrillers, fiction, historic fiction, I dabble in all of it. When it comes to authors I enjoy again it's quite spead out over the various genres. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, John Grisham, David Baldacci, Michael Crichton, Robin Cook, John Patterson, Trudi Canavan, Alison Croggon, Brent Weeks, Andrzej Sapkowski, Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson have all written books I've loved. There are obviously many more but those are the ones I can think of. My overall favourite book is The Lord of The Rings, I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.

My Goal for 2019 is to get back to at least 4 books a month, which is what I used to read.

Diana | 1 comments Hi, everyone! I'm Diana. I'm 22 and I'm from Romania, studying at university (psychology). I've loved reading since I was little, but for the past couple of years I haven't read as much as I would've wanted and liked. This past year I've tried to change that & found my pleasure of reading again, so I'm excited to read as much as I can in 2019 and discover new amazing books. I love fantasy and YA, but I'm open to any type of book.

message 122: by Charnee (new)

Charnee I'm Charnee from Salt Lake City, Utah and love to read. I also like to challenge myself when it comes to the books I choose. Came upon this group through one of my friends page, looks fun and I'm a little sad I didn't find it sooner but now that I found this group 2019 is looking to be a great year in books.

message 123: by Lori (new)

Lori (lj9142) | 3 comments Hi! My name is Lori and I’m new to this group. My goal for the upcoming year is 60 books (5 a month). When I used to read all the time I was well over that goal, so hoping this is realistic since I’m trying to get back into reading. My favorite genre is mystery/thriller/suspense, but I also like romance, memoirs, young adult, and the occasional fantasy. Also a lover of reading the dictionary and cookbooks. I look forward to getting to know you.

They can count where you want them to count in our group :) But the official Goodreads challenge will count them as read in 2019.

message 126: by SANDYE (new)

SANDYE (sandye_c) Hello! I'm Sandye, originally from Pittsburgh, PA, now living in Philadelphia, PA.

My favorite genre to read tends to be cozy mysteries or romantic comedies. I have tried to broaden my reading interests slowly, and am hoping joining this group and participating in at least some of the challenges will help me to do that!

I look forward to participating in this group as 2019 moves forward! Good luck to everyone in the group!! May the challenges we set be easily attained, and the support be plentiful as we try to meet those challenges!!

message 127: by Patch (new)

Patch Hey! I'm Celine, 22 years old, living in Germany and I'm a full-time law student.

I've unfortunately lost interest in reading about two years ago and am now slowly getting back into it. Reflecting back on that time my problem was the self-imposed pressure of keeping up with all the paranormal YA series everyone was obsessing over. I misinterpreted my indifference towards those certain books as a disinterest towards reading altogether. It took me two years to realize that maybe standalones and contemporary / mystery novels (with the occasional fantasy thrown in there) are my exact cup of tea.

Despite that I'm open to any kind of genre! I've been looking for a book club on Goodreads for some time and think this might be the right one for me.

Scientist's Reading World | Hugo Lapa (scientistsreadingworld) Hello, I'm Hugo, 23 years old, I live in Portugal Lisbon and now i am a full time Chemical Engineering Student, making my master thesis this January till October.

For 4 years i had a part time job, which take me off a lot of time of reading but since i leave i have more time. Here in Portugal is hard to find books that are popular out there because the translated version takes a long time and the bookstores do not have a lot of english version.
This X-Mas i got my E-reader to be make easy to read different books and cheaper :P

I Like all types of books my favorite are fantasy, biopics, romantic historical books, terror and thriller.

I need some friends and people to talk about books and to give me good suggestions on books and i think this club can be the right for me :)

KSMary | 306 comments Hello! My name is Mary and I am from the Midwest US. I work FT and have a lot of volunteer commitments so I didn't reach my goal of 75 books this year but I hope to do better in 2019. My daughter just graduated from college this month and will start law school in the fall so I will have more traveling this year.

I think this group looks like a lot of fun and with all of the different challenges will help me achieve that goal. I read a bit of everything but my most read genres would be HF, Romance and Mystery/Thriller (not too gory though) with a good bit of YA, Fantasy and NF thrown in. Can't wait to start the new year!

message 130: by Sara (new)

Sara Hi Everyone. I’m Sara from Portland, OR, US. My goal is to read 52 books this year including a mix of challenge and dessert books (non fiction, classics, sci-fi and YA). I’ve read 40 this year (mostly in the winter) and I think I can make it to 52 if I keep reading in the summer. Looking forward to this group’s community challenges, suggestions and encouragement.

message 137: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Elizabeth, from Georgia.

I love reading any type of psychological thriller/suspense/mystery books, as well as anything that involves psychology and/or true crime.

I joined this group after realizing that Goodreads was more than just me keeping a list of books!

My goal for 2019 is to read one book per week. I tend to read a ton and then stop for months at a time, and I'd like to be more consistent!

message 138: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Carrico | 40 comments My name is Danielle and I'm from Kentucky. I've been on Goodreads for a while but have never joined a group. I was a huge bookworm until I hit college, then I didn't really have a lot of time for leisure reading. I've gotten back into my book ways this past year and I feel so amazing! It's so comforting. My hubby doesn't like to read, so I make sure to fill him in on everything hes missing 😉

I'm starting 2019 soft, shooting for 12 books but hoping to blow that out of the water! Already have plans to read some books that I've had on my "to read" list for years. Going to start with Stieg Larsson's The Millenium Trilogy!

message 139: by Lulua (new)

Lulua | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Lulua.
I've joined this group because I love reading but at times I get carried away with my phone and my dear book strives in loneliness... I'm sure you lovely people out there will help me be real and will bring me out of the mundane screen that I keep gazing at!
I want to start the year with a pledge that I will finish my reading goal.

message 140: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (stressedrach) Hi Everyone, I'm Rachel, I'm in the UK
I joined this group yesterday as I really want to do a reading challenge to get myself to read more this year and clear some of my bookshelves. I've been on GoodReads for just over 7 years.
I like to read suspense, thriller, crime, romance, YA, fantasy, paranormal, comedy just depends on my mood on what I will read.
My reading goal for 2019 is 30 books but hope to do more than that.

message 142: by Ally (new)

Ally (thedreadedbookworm) | 4 comments Hi there
I'm Ally, this is my first Goodreads group. I live in England at the moment but after Brexit that may change!
I'm here for help with my 2019 challenge. I'm trying to read 100 books in a year. I'm doing it to raise money in memory of my Dad who died in September as he was the one who inspired my love of reading. If anyone wants to follow my journey on this, I can supply the just giving page but I'm really here for moral support and book ideas so hi to everyone and good luck with whatever challenges you have set yourselves.
xx

Kelly Eldredge (goodreadscomkelly_jo_eldredge) | 2 comments Hi All! Just joined today. I live in Denver, Colorado. LOVE books and can never seem to join an in-person book club, because my work schedule is nuts. (I'm the head of the theatre arts & dance department at Red Rocks Community College--spend a lot of extra hours there.)

Looking forward to getting to know you all virtually!

message 144: by Amy (new)

Amy (museprint) Wow I love signing up for new things last minute and promptly getting overwhelmed oh boy

I'm Amy, been living and working (in publishing!) in NYC for 6 months now. I'm currently developing my taste in borderline pretentious literary stuff and meta-fiction/non-traditional structure (a la Pale Fire). Also always in the mood to pick up some tried-and-true classics (this year I'm finally reading Harry Potter, because gee whiz did I miss that hype train).

Honestly, for someone who was a voracious reader in middle school, I fell off the reading wagon in high school and college. I really want to go back to constantly having a book on hand (and take preventative measures against my devastating amount of screen time). I'm going for 25 in 2019 (taking into account some 1000-word behemoths) but really hoping to overshoot this goal.

Cyndi Bowman (cyndibowman) Hi, all.

My name is Cyndi, and I've been hooked on reading since I was a small child. I love to tell people about the books I read, and to discuss them with others.

My goal for 2018 was 120 books, which I went past. I think my goal will be the same in 2019: 120 books. I love using Goodreads to keep track of what I've read. I post reviews occasionally, something I'm trying to get better at.

Thanks for letting me tag along in your group!

message 148: by David (new)

David (argdov) Heyo!

I've been in this group for awhile but I've been quiet in here for about a year so I figured I may as well introduce myself again. I'm from Los Angeles.

My main goals for this coming year are to read 6 "long" books this year- 600 pages or more, though the 600 page ones only count if they've got small type. I also want to read 5 "classics" this year and several books on LGBT History, as well as several books with LGBT themes.

One final goal is that in 2016 I took part in a group where I was paired up with someone and we picked a book thats on both of our to-read lists, and read it along with them. I loved that and hopefully want to do it this coming year as well.

I managed 61 books this past year but my initial goal was much smaller and I plan to do that again this coming year- starting with a small goal and then upping it as I progress.

I've got several books in mind that I definitely want to read this year but we'll see if that pans out. Whenever I make a very limited list I never end up sticking to it.

I may want to get more involved in the community on here in general as well. its a great one.
