Welcome HRBC members to the second annual Romance Across The Ages challenge!

In this challenge, we have 24 subgenres to choose from and you get to choose how many books you want to tackle this year, with the minimum being 12. There are some changes from last year based on the challenge feedback.

We have selected 2 random subgenres per month and we will be reading the same subgenres together. We will be tracking challenges here on the thread and on a challenge shelf. Instructions below.

We have 24 subgenres to choose from this year and the participants choose at least 12 subgenres. The goal is to read at least 12 books from at least 12 subgenres, one per subgenre. However, you can also choose as many subgenres as you want to read.

I had no idea there was another version of Whitney, My Love! I'll be reading it on my Kindle so I think you're right about it being the updated version.

I'm relatively new to the Historical Romance genre and I've been putting off reading Whitney, My Love for months because I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it. I thought this challenge would give me the perfect reason to get it off my "To Read" shelf.

Goal: 12 books

Preliminary choices:
JANUARY:
Around the World (Spain):The Flesh and the Devil

FEBRUARY:
Ancient World / Prehistorical: Glory and the Lightning: A Novel of Ancient Greece

MARCH:
Viking: Dream of Me

APRIL:
LGBTQ: Butterfly Tattoo
Okay, so this isn't historical, which makes me feel like I've violated the spirit of the HR group...But! I wanted to explore what it would be like, emotionally, for a hetero female to fall in love with a bi male, and this was the closest I could find. (Saw several historical MMF stories, but my interest wasn't in a threesome relationship, so...)

MAY:
Regency: Lord of Dishonor

JUNE:
Time Travel: Mariana

JULY:
Pirate: Captain Blood: His Odyssey

AUGUST:
Western: Hummingbird

SEPTEMBER:
Bodice Ripper: The Demon Lover

OCTOBER:
American Revolution: Love Not a Rebel

NOVEMBER:
Diversity: Through the Storm

DECEMBER:
Scottish / Highlander: Rebellion

Tanya Sridhar (angellus08) | 343 comments I finished reading To Beguile a Beast for one of the January's sub-genre's. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, Hoyt is an all time favorite but this is one of her stronger books.

It's a take on the Beauty and the Beast trope but there's something about it that stands out from the other adaptations. I love my scarred hero's but Alistair is up there in the Top 5.

I'm doing a reread of Flowers From the Storm. I had to stop so I could finish a couple other projects because I love this book so much that I must have time to devour, savor, and sigh. Good luck Darbella! That book is a journey for sure.

I think I am going to reread a Hoyt fave for Georgian and may try Jeannie Lynn again for Around the World. If not, it’ll be My Beautiful Enemy in audio, probably. I can’t believe we’re nearly halfway through the month!

It is definitely not your typical romance. It's much deeper than that. The details of the mental health system, and the way Laura Kinsale wrote Maddy Girl, was just amazing to me. I too wasn't sure I could like this hero in the beginning. He's a true rake, the kind we think we like to read about, but really don't. There were so many things not usually done in a romance that she gets right in this story.
Anyway, it deeply affected me. I read it last year for the first time. I think it's a love it or hate kind of book. I couldn't read anything for a few days after finishing it. There are few characters who live with me forever...these are two of them.

Is it interesting? When I started the Jeannie Lynn one I have, it was just so different from the usual fare that I had difficulty getting into it. I think I am at a better place now to try, though.

I have read Beautiful Enemy, so I may just reread, because you pretty much can’t go wrong with Sherry Thomas.

Oh, exactly! I'd not have read it except for this book club. It was a BOTM last year. It took me the whole month because when I really like a book I read extra slow, reread paragraphs, and just stare into space LOL.... that's when reading is everything I want it to be. There are some books that are just that special.

I'm truly excited to see what you think about it.
