I'm trying to think of creatures for Dark Arts - do they have to be creatures mentioned in a Harry Potter book?

Dragons? Witches? Werewolves? Snakes? Demons? What to you guys think?

I was thinking if we could use a snake, then Sassafras's book Lion and the Falcon could work 'cuz a falcon could kill a snake. Of course then we've got to find a snake book, but I'm sure there are some snake shifters out there.

Fae in book / iron in title
Werewolf in book / silver in title
Demon in book / salt in title
Vampires in book / sun or sunlight or stake in title
Witch in book / fire in title

But I think your snake/Falcon is a good suggestion, if find book with snake shifter.

Yeah Kim and Sandy for picking your 3 Harry Potter characters. I was an easy 5 points. I did't feel I was qualified to leave an opinion only having read the first book. I don't have a favorite character yet.

Hello everyone!

I’m so excited to start playing TT with team Newt as I missed the cut off for signups by 1 day (serves me right for not checking my messages often enough!).

I am utterly confused by all the spells and classes so my next stop will be to go read all the rules. It looks like all the books us newcomers have read since the challenge start date will count, so that’s good news. I’ll post them to the completed books thread shortly.

So, I think I might be the only one in Australia, so my timings might be a bit off compared to everyone else, but that usually means I get to wake up to lots of new messages. I read most things except cosy mysteries and whodunnits and I’m not a big fan of chick lit and romance anymore.

Couple of questions
Do Anthologies count? Does each story author count as an author for the spell outs or just the first author?
Does a book count if I finished it on the 12th or does it need to be started on the 12th or after?

To answer Linda's questions, books need to be started on or after the 12th at Midnight (West time) Books started before the 12th will not count no matter when they were completed.

Will have to go searching for your anthology question. I can't remember where I saw it.

FAQ updated

◈ Q: Where there are multiple authors, can they be used?
A: If attributed on Goodreads, then yes. For example, Eternity's Wheel. Where it is a book with a collection of stories and Goodreads shows one author as the "editor", then you can only use the editor. (e.g. Dog is My Co-Pilot: Great Writers on the World's Oldest Friendship)

Regarding anthologies - if it's a boxed set, like Harry Potter Boxset or The Harry Potter Collection 1-4 then the books are counted separately.
If it's not a boxed set, but a collection of different authors, then the book is counted as one book.

FYI for Non-fiction books (from the mods):

◈ Q: Do characters in non-fiction books count?
A: Typically no. For example, if it is a historical account of WWII and the story is about Winston Churchill, he is not considered a 'character'.
Exceptions would be something like a memoir, ( e.g. Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness) where someone is recounting events and situations ; then it is possible there would be characters.
