Laura | 9707 comments Hello Newts!! How's everyone's reading going? What are you reading? Are we having fun yet? Did everyone get a chance to look at the spreadsheet and check out the classes like Sandy suggested earlier?

Yesterday when I checked the standings we were in 3rd place, this morning 4th place and then this evening we were sitting in 6th place. Standings are going to change and are only as accurate as captains update.

I'm working on Restore Me (Shatter Me, #4) by Tahereh Mafi a buddy read and Skin Game (The Dresden Files, #15) by Jim Butcher ( 600 pager) I also have another buddy read set up in a few days Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough .

I went to the library today and brought home some queues that came in The Invasion of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #2) by Erika Johansen The Fate of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #3) by Erika Johansen Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser and Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

Laura | 9707 comments Newts... I need to tell you my little story. :-)

Its a feel good story. My great aunt called me this afternoon but when I said hello it wasn't her. I imagined all sorts of awful things. The lady asked if I knew my aunt and called her by her full name and I said absolutely. Seems my auntie forgot her purse behind and this good samartian was returning it to the police station. I called my aunt to her let her know and she was out lookng for her purse so I spoke to her sister and she was so relieved ( they are in their 80's) and was going to let her know when she came home.

I had programmed my number in my aunt's phone one time she was down for a visit. She lives 2 1/2 hours away from me. Such a happy ending for my auntie! Good smaratians are still around!!
Love feel good stories!

Happy birthday to Pomona Sprout!

In recognition of her birthday and to promote house spirit before Quidditch starts, here are a few puzzles for your enjoyment. They are possible to do on a phone.

I didn’t get much reading in yesterday, had a stupid headache. Seems to be better today (so far). I did have a quick look at classes, some are quite vague.

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5684 comments I’ve finished Planet Dragos (Elder Races, #9.8) by Thea Harrison . While a short one, it was great seeing more Pia and Dragos. The Elder Races is such a great series.

Next up is Sin and Tonic (Sinners, #6) by Rhys Ford that was released today. I can’t wait to read, but also not, as it’s the last book in this series.

message 163: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Yeah, glad to hear you are feeling better Danielle.
Hmm, I know how you feel about reading the last one in the series. I'm working on the last Harry Dresden book... I'm a little sad. If he hasn't written anything else for Harry in 4 years it may be that he isn't?

message 164: by ✿~Danielle~✿ (new)

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5684 comments Sin and Tonic (Sinners, #6) by Rhys Ford was excellent. It was a good series ended and did the series justice. Any open questions from previous books were answered and all characters were left in a good place. Couldn’t ask for more for a last book in a series.

SandyL | 4747 comments How's everyone doing so far? Hopefully we'll get info on the classes today. Is anyone doing any buddy reads?

message 166: by ✿~Danielle~✿ (last edited May 16, 2018 12:31PM) (new)

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5684 comments I won’t be planning and signed up front for loads of BR’s, but I’ll do some.

I’m definitely doing Ocean Light (Psy-changeling Trinity, #2; Psy-changeling, #17) by Nalini Singh 16th June, The Thief (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #16) by J.R. Ward 23rd May.

Possibles for this week are Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1) by Seanan McGuire 17th May, Beneath the Scars (Masters of the Shadowlands, #13) by Cherise Sinclair 22nd May.

message 167: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments I'm going to do the Cherise Sinclair book too, and I'm doing the Harry Potter books (except Chamber of Secrets since I recently read it.) I'm also going to do The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - my Overdrive has it on audiobooks, so I'll listen to it.

I'm reading Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly right now for the BOM and I do my questions next week. In between I've got other books for various other challenges.

Too little time, too many books!

message 168: by Erika (new)

Erika I finished a U book! Woop woop!

I’m doing the Harry Potter Buddy reads and the Dark Places one. I may do the Red Sister BoM and I just asked about another Buddy Read.

message 169: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Yeah Erika! Awesome.

I'm doing a few buddy reads and trying to reign myself in😀I'm on the app so not going to list them all!

SandyL | 4747 comments Classes

Here is the link to the thread - to make it easy to discuss, I'm going to copy the info here.

ARITHMANCY

For this class you need to read one book for each point tier. After that, class is considered mastered and you will earn one point per each book read during the challenge.

ASTRONOMY

For this task you'll be required to read one book per Hogwarts year, where the book title contains a celestial object (sun, moon, stars. comets, etc).
Books are worth 0.02 points per page, and all seven need to be read to score.

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES

◈ Describe your Magical Creature using book covers(Required: 5 books)
Using books, piece together your unique creation. You can look for just those unique parts (fangs, wings, skin, etc.) that you want. Just make sure the part you are using is on the cover.
◈ Using aspects from the book, tell us more about the Magic Creature
4 books

Classification : Book Rating

Ministry of Magic (M.O.M.) Classification
XXXXX – Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate
XXXX – Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge / skilled wizard may handle
XXX – Competent wizard should cope
XX – Harmless / may be domesticated
X – Boring

Localization :Book Setting: Louisiana, Under Water, Panem, etc

Feeding Habits : What they eat - blood, raw meat, etc (*)

Uses : Eggs, Feathers, Blood, etc (*)

(*) It has to be mentioned in the book

CHARMS

Read Pairs of books that represent the Charm you are trying to master (Can be cover or title)

Levitation Charm : is a charm used to make objects fly, or levitate

Cheering Charm : is a spell which makes a person happy. When the spell is overdone, it can cause the victim to be overcome with fits of hysterical laughter.

Mending Charm : also known as the Repairing Charm (Reparo), is a charm that can be used to seamlessly repair a broken object.

Summoning Charm : is a charm that causes a target at a distance from the caster to levitate or fly over to them. This spell needs thought behind it, the object must be clear in the casters mind, before trying to summon.

This spell is one of the oldest spells known to wizarding society

Banishing Charm :is the counter-charm to the Summoning Charm. As Accio summons objects to the caster, Depulso sends both objects and living things away from the caster.[3] Unlike the Summoning Charm, which can summon specific objects from anywhere, the Banishing Charm banishes whatever the wand is aimed at.

Fire-Making Spell : also known as the Fire-Making Charm (Incendio) is a charm and a form of Conjuration, that can be used to conjure a jet of orange and red flame. Thereby this spell can be used to set things alight

Water-Making Spell : "The Water-Making Spell conjures clean, drinkable water from the end of the wand." The Water-Making Spell, also known as the Aguamenti Spell (Aguamenti) is a charm that conjures a jet of clear, pure water and shoots it from the tip of the caster's wand.

HISTORY OF MAGIC

TRANSFIGURATION

For this class you'll need to form pairs again. One book represents the initial object, the second the transfigurated one.

You can use just a part of something BUT you need to say is that part of something. For example, you can't say person to cat, and then have a book with just an arm on the cover.

message 180: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments I'm still digesting what some of this means!

Any thoughts, please speak up. Some of these we need to be creative. Also, I'll update the posting requirements to include cover and if you feel your book might fit a class.

message 181: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments It looks like the classes are worth more points than the spells, other than the Unforgivable Curses, so I'm thinking we should fill those in first if we have books that fit.

Examples:
The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye (Millennium, #5) by David Lagercrantz would work for Potions - Red
Love in a Nutshell (Culhane Family #1) by Janet Evanovich works for Potions - Green
Fearless (Dartmoor, #1) by Lauren Gilley would work for Care of Magical Creatures - there are dog feet on the cover

What do you guys think?

Also, does anyone read ARCs? We need 3 "to be published" books

nah, no point in putting your name down for something when you know life'll prevent you doing it properly. I'm not considering the first round, as I'm off on hols (with sister & niblings) for the last week of May, so won't have reading time or GR time.
