Cathy Hamilton was just a small town schoolteacher who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now her head is full of information that could get her killed, and she is forced to flee through the night across unfamiliar territory in a car that’s almost out of gas with no weapon, no money and no phone. A government agent has tried to kill her , the FBI has set a trap for her, and her only hope for survival is a man she doesn’t dare trust: a cop who’s willing to risk his badge—and his life—to save her.
Cathy Hamilton was enjoying the evening party – it was an after the concert get together plus the combination of both her and twin brother Jack’s birthdays. But she was uneasy – Jack hadn’t turned up and he had said he wouldn’t miss the concert for anything. Jack and his young children were supposedly on their way home from a holiday and Cathy knew instinctively something was wrong. But she tried not to let her concern show. When the call came in after midnight, her terror and agitation had her on the road quickly, heading for Oregon and the hospital where Jack and the children were; the trouble was, it was three hundred miles away…
When Cathy pulled into a 24 hour truck stop to get some fuel and call her best friend Ellen it was nearing 2am. But that innocent road side stop changed her life in an instant – two men in a dark car, another man heading towards her in the phone box - she felt their sinister intent; then the phone ringing with words that didn’t make sense. Suddenly she was on the run – desperate and alone, with little fuel and no phone, not even knowing where she was, she just knew someone was trying to kill her – and she had no idea why.
Who could she trust? Would a call to 911 save her? Or would that make things much worse than they already were? Cathy just wanted to get to her brother and her niece and nephew – would he die before she could make it to his side?
Night Flight by Donna Ball blew me away! A book I’ve had on my kindle for four years – a freebie to add to my new Christmas kindle at the end of 2011! I started it as I needed a book starting with N for a challenge, plus it sounded good. And boy, was it! Gripping, intense, fast paced and extremely realistic, it had me from the start. Cathy was such an everyday person; her character was really well portrayed. I thoroughly enjoyed this psychological thriller and have no hesitation in recommending it highly!
Donna Ball has written under her own name and five pseudonyms for such publishers as Doubleday, St. Martin's Press, Warner, Dutton/Signet, Zebra, Pinnacle, Harlequin/Silhouette and Avon Books. With “Night Flight” and one other novel, Ball decided to self-publish. “Night Flight” is a 60,000 word suspense/thriller.
Cathy Hamilton, born only three minutes after her brother Jack, has willingly allowed him to be her psychological guardian and determine the limitations of her ambition and abilities. She long ago accepted that Jack is the brightest twin. She knows her position in the grand scheme. She is a school teacher, but Jack is a college professor. She is the reckless one—always forgetting her cellphone, failing to think rationally—and Jack is the one who is cool under pressure—always knowing what to do. Cathy has become accustomed to a world where everything is under control because Jack makes sure that she doesn’t venture into territory, either in her thinking or her actions, that he considers dangerous.
When Jack and his five-year-old twins are injured in a car accident while returning home from a trip to Canada, Cathy is awakened just before midnight by a phone call from Mercy Hospital in Albany, Oregon. Jack is in critical condition and in surgery. She is desperate to get to them and recklessly sets out alone from Lynn Haven, California, leaving her friend Ellen to wait at the house for further news. As she drives away, she promises to call, unaware that her cellphone is still in her dresser drawer.
That one detail—leaving her cellphone behind—places her smack in the middle between drug dealers, the FBI, the DEA, and local law enforcement. Mistaken for another woman when she stops to call the hospital to check on Jack’s condition, Cathy finds herself on a flight through the night that is devoid of markers telling her whom to trust. She must learn to rely on her own instincts, and just when you think you can catch your breath in this frenzied tale, the story takes flight again!
Although “Night Flight” is a gripping suspense novel, it is also a story of how her bizarre experiences transform Cathy Hamilton’s life. The frustration building in the reader at Cathy’s mind-boggling situation is mitigated by the strength that slowly begins to show itself In Cathy.
Will this novel keep your attention? Only if you start reading it!
Donna Ball is the queen of romantic suspense, and she doesn't disappoint with this one. From the opening chapter you're along for the ride in a high-speed chase of a drama. When a woman driving to the hospital late at night, on her way to see her brother who was injured in an accident, gets waylaid by a case of mistaken identity, she finds herself the object of a FBI manhunt led by a ruthless rogue agent. The tension never lets up. I dare you to put this one down!
Not bad writing or anything specific that I can pin down about why I didn't care for it. However, I didn't like the language in it, even though it was sparse (that is, up to the point I quit trying to convince myself that I cared about the characters - that was on page 50). I'm sure others will like it far better than I did.
On her birthday Cathy Hamilton gets a call that her twin, Jack, has been in a car accident and is in critical condition in an Oregon hospital. She takes off from CA for OR. When she stops for gas at a 24 hour convenience store/gas station she tries to call the hospital from the phone booth for an update. But that puts her in the wrong place at the wrong time. She gets message not meant for her and is caught in a shoot out at the gas station. She takes off, but soon finds that calls to the police make her a target and both DEA and FBI agents are on her trail. One ordinary conscientious cop tries to help, but ends up making himself a target as well. This was an adrenaline rush of a story with 2 characters who are not hero material. Good to see for a change. Story published in 1992 and makes heavy use of telephone booths, something you can't even find now a days.
I love the interactions between characters, the suspense as the story plays out, and the twists and turns. At one point I just sat and stared at the page thinking NO, NO, NO that can't happen. And then yet another twist. Great book and a completely different writing style than other books by this author.
Very suspenseful story about a woman caught up in a drug investigation and the police man who helps her. It starts out as case of misidentification and ends up in a chase for her life. I could hardly put the book down toward the exciting ending.
Night flight by Donna Ball kept me turning the pages. Donna Ball tells a good story of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and not knowing who to trust.
The Darkest Hour by Donna Ball is one of the most enjoyable novels I’ve read this year. Though labelled ‘romantic suspense’ it is more suspense than romance.
A summary: Cathy Hamilton, a school teacher gets a call in the middle of the night that her twin brother was involved in an accident. On her way to the hospital, which is in another state, she walks into an ongoing FBI investigation, is invariably mistaken for someone else, which leads to her having to run for her life while her brother continues to fight for his. Not knowing who to trust, she must rely on the assistance of a police officer, Dave Jenks, who hasn’t had such a high profile case since…well, ever.
Donna Ball throws the reader into the action very early in the story and the action doesn’t stop until it’s over. When I’d read the first three chapters, I delighted in telling a group of friends about the story, ending with, “and that’s just the first three chapters.” Both Cathy and Dave are believable and likable characters and it was good to see them win.
The suspense was great, but I wish there had been a little more romance - at least a kiss (or two).
Not a bad story at all. I was totally engrossed several times. Even had my heart rate speed up in accordance to what was going on a couple of times. Would've given it a higher rating but I felt the end got a little rushed. The major conflict wasn't as major as I would've liked. It was still good though. Worth the time for sure!
This was my introduction to Donna Ball stories. Again, she has a good female protagonist and just enough mystery to make the story move. Light reading but a nice balance of action and character.
I CAN'T STOP READING THIS!!!! It is kind of predictable at times but it still holds me captive!!! This is the 1st time I have read one of Donna's books and I LOVE IT!!!
