Challenge #999- CCC
see-https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Fall 2022 Scavenger - GREAT FIRE OF LONDON
Timeframe: 9/21/22 to 12/20/22
150p.min.

20/20

CHALLENGE TASKS: 0/20 Complete
✔ 1. In 1666, a devastating fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman city wall, destroying 13,200 houses, 87 churches, The Royal Exchange, Guildhall, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. The death toll is generally thought to have been relatively small, although some historians have challenged this belief.
🔥 Read a book where the first word of the title begins with a letter in FIRE (disregard A, An, The) - If This World Were Mine by E. Lynn Harris-
OR - a book in which a destructive fire occurs (tell us briefly about how your book fits).

✔ 2. The Great Fire of London started on Sunday, September 2, 1666 in a baker's shop on Pudding Lane belonging to Thomas Farynor. Although he claimed to have extinguished the fire, three hours later at 1am, his house was a blazing inferno.
🔥 Read a book originally published in September (of any year, tell us the publication date)- The Hostile Hospital by Lemony Snicket-9/23/23- pub. 9/4/2001;
- OR - a book about a baker or bakery shop.

✔3. At first, few were concerned since fires were such a common occurrence at the time. However, the fire spread rapidly, helped by a strong wind from the east. When it reached the Thames River, it hit warehouses stocked with combustible products including oil and tallow.
🔥 Read a book that is "common:" with at least 1000 ratings (tell us how many) - OR - a book showing a river on the cover (show us the cover).- A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean-10/28/22- A River Runs through It by Norman Maclean

✔4. Fortunately, the fire didn't spread south of the river, but that was only because a major blaze in 1633 had already destroyed a section of London Bridge.
🔥 Read a book with a well-known monument (bonus if it's London Bridge) on the cover (show us the cover) - OR - a book with a directional word in the title (ex., north, south, up, down, left, right, etc.)- Under Fire by Henri Barbusse- 11/23/22

✔5. Buildings were made of timber, covered in flammable pitch, roofed with thatch, and tightly packed together. Because of previous fires, building with wood and roofing with thatch had been prohibited for centuries, but these cheap materials continued to be used. The only major area built with brick or stone was the wealthy center of the city, where the mansions of the merchants and brokers stood on spacious lots.
🔥 Read a book with a wealthy character (tell us who) - OR - a book in which someone does something illegal or disregards the law in some way (using spoiler tags if necessary, tell us who and what).- looting of artifacts (as well as murder) in Death of a Messenger by Robert McCaw-12/23/22-

✔6. At the time, London was one of the largest cities in Europe, with a population of 350,000 people. The city was medieval in its street plan--an overcrowded warren of narrow, winding, cobbled alleys. The typical multistory timbered London tenement houses had "jetties" (projecting upper floors). They had a narrow footprint at ground level but maximized their use of land by encroaching on the street with the gradually increasing size of their upper stories.
🔥 Read a book with some sort of wooden building on the cover (a house, a barn, a shed, etc.; show us the cover) - OR - a book whose author's first and last initials are found in JETTIES.- Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski-10/26/22

✔7. The City proper (the area bounded by the city wall and the River Thames) was the commercial heart of the capital and was the largest market and busiest port in England. It was traffic-clogged, polluted, and unhealthy, especially after it was hit by a devastating outbreak of bubonic plague in 1665.
🔥 Read a book set in a big city (tell us which city) - New York City- Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn-11/11/22 -
OR - a book in which someone becomes ill (not injured, but sick; tell us who).

✔8. By Monday, many people decided to leave, so there were scenes at the gates as panicked refugees tried to get out. Even under normal circumstances, the mix of carts, wagons, and pedestrians in the narrow alleys was subject to frequent gridlock and accidents. Refugees escaping outwards, away from the center of destruction, were blocked by soldiers trying to keep the streets clear for firefighters, causing further panic.
🔥 Read a book in which someone must move or flee to seek safety (tell us who)- the title character is a spy who must flee Argentina in
Who Is Vera Kelly?- by Rosalie Knecht-1/2/23-
OR - a book with a military character (any war, any era; tell us who).

✔ 9. Following a long, dry summer, the city was suffering a drought. Water was scarce, and the wooden houses had dried out, making them easier to burn. Efforts to bring the fire under control by using buckets quickly failed. Panic began to spread throughout the city.
🔥 Read a book set in the summer (June, July, or August) - month not specified...but Summer in the Arctic- Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George-7/23/23
OR - a book with some sort of bucket (or other container able to carry water) on the cover (show us the cover).

✔ 10. In 1666 there was no organized fire brigade. Firefighting was very basic with little skill or knowledge involved. Leather buckets, axes and water squirts were used to fight the fire but had little effect.
🔥 Read a book set in the 1600's or earlier -1500's- The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare-8/9/23 -
OR - a book with a firefighter character (tell us who).

✔ 11. The use of the major firefighting technique of the time, the creation of firebreaks by means of demolition, was critically delayed due to the indecisiveness of the Lord Mayor, Sir Thomas Bloodworth. By the time large-scale demolitions were ordered on Sunday night, the wind had already fanned the bakery fire into a firestorm which defeated such measures.
🔥 Read a book in which an explosion occurs - OR - a book with an indecisive character (tell us who). Dylan Fabizak in Selfish and Perverse by Bob Smith-10/24/23 never seems to know what he really wants...but he is an actor...and it may all be an act.

✔12. The fire pushed north on Monday into the heart of the City. Order in the streets broke down as rumors arose of suspicious foreigners setting fires. The fears of the homeless focused on the French and Dutch, England's enemies in the ongoing Second Anglo-Dutch War. These substantial immigrant groups then became victims of street violence.
🔥 Read a book with some sort of violence in the story -Voldemort exacts violence and death on several characters in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling- 10/21/22-
OR - a book in which a character spreads rumors (using spoiler tags, if necessary, tell us who).

✔ 13. As the fire raged on, people tried to leave the city and poured down to the Thames in an attempt to escape by boat. And absolute chaos reigned as thousands of ‘sightseers’ from the villages came to view the disaster.
🔥 Read a book with a small boat on the cover (a dinghy, canoe, or other small boat; show us the cover) - OR - a book with a compound word found in the text (tell us the page number or location and a brief excerpt of the text).- "old-fashioned"- p.255- A Heart So White-"...it would have amused him to use the old-fashioned term..." 10/4/22

✔14. By September 4th, half of London was in flames. King Charles II ordered that all the houses in the path of the fire be pulled down to create a ‘fire-break’. The hope was that by doing this they would create a space to stop the fire spreading from house to house. This was done with hooked poles, but to no avail as the fire outstripped them. The King himself then joined the fire fighters, passing buckets of water in an attempt to quell the flames, but the fire raged on.
🔥 Read a book with a king as a character (tell us who) - OR - a book in which a group of people must work together to solve a problem (briefly tell us what).- a family and detectives work together to solve two mysterious deaths in The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo-11/15/22

✔ 15. On Tuesday, the fire had spread over most of the city. The battle to put out the fire is considered to have been won by two key factors: the strong east wind dropped, and the Tower of London garrison used gunpowder to create effective firebreaks. The fire was mostly under control by Wednesday, September 5.
🔥 Read a Series #5 book (tell us the series) - OR - a book with a day or month in the title.- In September, the Light Changes by Andrew Holleran-6/6/23

✔16. In the immediate aftermath of the fire, a poor demented French watchmaker, Lucky Hubert, confessed to starting the fire deliberately. Justice was swift, and he was rapidly hanged. It was sometime later however that it was realized that he couldn’t have started it, as he was not in England at the time.
🔥 Read a book in which someone is wrongly accused of a crime (tell us who) - OR - a book set in a different country from where you live (tell us where you live and where the book is set).- set in Sweden and South Africa- An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed by Helene Tursten- 11/2/22 —

✔17. Afterwards, London had to be almost totally reconstructed. Temporary buildings were erected that were ill-equipped, disease spread easily, and many people died from this and the harsh winter that followed the fire. Flight from London and settlement elsewhere were strongly encouraged by Charles II, who feared a London rebellion amongst the dispossessed refugees.
🔥 Read a book set in London - This Way Out by Tufayel Ahmed 11/7/22 -
OR - a book in which someone dies (tell us who).-

✔ 18. Various schemes for rebuilding the city were proposed, some of them very radical. But after the fire, London was reconstructed on essentially the same medieval street plan which still exists today. As well as loss of life, the financial costs were staggering: estimated at £10 million...at a time when London's annual income was only £12,000.
🔥 Read a book that you purchased - Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman-6/16/23
OR - a book that is very similar to a book you read recently (briefly, tell us how they are similar, such as plot line, trope, characters, etc.)

✔ 19. Sir Christopher Wren planned the new city, and the rebuilding of London took over 30 years. The site where the fire first started is now marked by a 202-foot monument built between 1671 and 1677.
🔥 Read a book with some sort of honorific in the title (like Sir, Mrs., etc.)--Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha by Dorothy Gilman-3/19/23
- OR - a book with an intact "30" in the number of pages (tell us how many).

Ed Lehman | 2907 comments Continued from above-

✔ 20. Shortly afterwards, clever businessmen spotted an opportunity to provide the surety of insurance, but they reduced their risk of financial losses by employing men to extinguish fires. Thus, the first fire brigades were formed.
🔥 Read a book where the main character owns his/her own business - OR - a book where the MAIN character's first name begins with a letter in INSURANCE (tell us the name)-Serge Storms in Triggerfish Twist by Tim Dorsey-7/22/23

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

OLYMPICS #37 - TENNIS
Timeframe: 10/1/22 to 10/31/22
0/5

1. The earliest recognizable relative to tennis, as we know it, was "jeu de paume", played in 11th century France. Played in a monastery courtyard, the game used the walls and sloping roofs as part of the court and the palm of the hand to hit the ball.
🎾 Read a book where all title words begin with letters in JEUDEPAUME (two-word minimum) - or - a book marked HISTORY on the main genre page.

2. Tennis became part of the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 1896, but it was dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics due to disputes between the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the International Olympic Committee over how to define amateur players. After two later appearances as a demonstration sport (1968 and 1984), it returned as a full medal sport in 1988, open for all players regardless of their age and status and has been played at every summer Games since then.
🎾 Read a book containing a dispute of some kind (using spoiler tags, if necessary, tell us what the conflict is) - or - a book whose title starts with a letter in TENNIS (disregard A, An, The).

3. The playing surface of the court varies between Olympic Games. It has been on hard court for every game since 1984 except for the 1992 Olympics (which was on a clay court) and the 2012 Olympics (which was played on a grass court). The changing playing surface gives certain players different advantages and disadvantages not seen in most other Olympic sports.
🎾 Read a book from an author who writes in different genres (tell us what genre you read and what other genres the author offers) - or - a book with the word "hard," "clay," or "grass" in the text (tell us the page number or location and include a brief section of the text).

4. Serena Williams and Venus Williams have each won a record four gold medals, three each as a doubles pairing, the only players to win the same Olympic event on three occasions. Venus Williams (four gold, one silver) and Kathleen McKane Godfree (one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes) are the all-time record holders for the most Olympic tennis medals, with five each. Andy Murray is the only player to have won two singles gold medals.
🎾 Read Book #2 or #5 in a series (tell us the series) - or - a book with a character who has won something (tell us the character and what he/she won.)

5. A player who wins an Olympic gold medal and all four majors in the same year is said to have won a Golden Slam. As of 2021, Steffi Graf is the only player to done so.
🎾 Read a book with something gold on the cover (show us the cover) - or - a book whose author's first name starts with S OR last name starts with G.

Ed Lehman | 2907 comments National Dishes Report #14

This month Ramiro and I had a busy "virtual vacations" experience. We "visited" the cuisines of Bulgaria, Switzerland, Sweden, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Texas, and Japan's Prefectures of Osaka and Fukioka for the first time. We revisited new items from the cuisines of South Africa, Philippines, Syria, Mexico, Iran Thailand, Italy Laos, California and Japan.
It struck me that not only are we so privileged to be able to be in a position to enjoy this hobby.... but, also...how lucky are we to live in San Diego...which has welcomed so many immigrants and refugees and brought along their traditions and cuisines.

Hello, I have written before about the lost of many points that I had earned by using the credit card which was linked to Starbucks and credited me with points for all my purchases with the card. When I tried to use my points, I was told that they no longer appeared on the computer. These points were never to expire. I received a response to my inquiry which was to do something online. I am a 69 year-old man, going through stage-4 cancer and chemo treatments and also not tech savvy. I was not able to figure out how to correct the issue... and then my health issues became complicated and the experience has left me very unsatisfied. So, I would appreciate it if Starbucks could resolve this issue the old-fashioned way. When the credit card was discontinued over a year ago... I lost many points. To the best of my recollection, I had amassed enough points to redeem for about 20 snack/sandwich plates. One of the cards I ordinarily used was #6149395783670560 . Please contact me by email Metro2edlehman@gmail.com or call me at (619) 610-8225 or by snail mail at Ed Lehman 7864 Mission Vista Drive, San Diego, CA 92120
Thank you for your attention to this issue,
Ed Lehman

December 2022 Scavenger - The Origins of Santa Claus
Timeframe: 12/1/22 to 12/31/22

7/7

✔1. The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back to a monk named Nicholas. He was born in 280 A.D. in Patara (in modern-day Turkey). His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," he used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man.
🎅 Read a book with a book with CHRISTIAN or RELIGION on the main genre page - or - a book with a MAIN character in a caregiver profession (such as priest, firefighter, police officer, medical, etc.; tell us who).- The MC is Koa Kane a Hawaii police detective in Death of a Messenger by Robert McCaw-12/23/22-

✔2. One story of Nicholas tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a girl's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value—a dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that she would find a good husband. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home, providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas.
🎅 Read a book in which someone gives or receives a gift (tell us who) - or - a book with a character who is a father (tell us who).- The main character is the unnamed narrator...and he has a young daughter in Hotel Honolulu by Paul Theroux-12/10/22

3. Several stories tell of Nicholas and the sea. When he was young, Nicholas made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Returning by sea, a mighty storm threatened to wreck the ship, but Nicholas calmly prayed. The terrified sailors were amazed when the wind and waves suddenly calmed, sparing them all. From then on, Nicholas became the patron of sailors and voyagers, and St. Nicholas chapels were built in many seaports. Sailors in the Aegean and Ionian seas, following a common Eastern custom, had their "star of St. Nicholas" and wished one another a good voyage with the phrase "May St. Nicholas hold the tiller."
🎅 Read a book with a storm word in the title (storm, rain, thunder, etc.) - or - a book in which someone travels by boat (tell us who and where they went).-All the characters are in Venice and travel around the city by water taxi in Territorial Rights by Muriel Spark-3/15/23-

4. After the Reformation, devotion to Nicholas disappeared in all Protestant countries of Europe except Holland, where his legend persisted as Sinterklaas (a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas). Dutch colonists took this tradition to America in the 17th century. Sinterklaas was adopted by the English-speaking majority under the name Santa Claus, and his legend of a kindly old man was united with old Nordic folktales of a magician who punished naughty children and rewarded good children with presents.
🎅 Read a book set during the Christmas season -It is the Christmas season near the end of this book when the story revolves around one of the characters being released from the hospital in If This World Were Mine by E. Lynn Harris- 5/25/23
or - a book that has been translated from one language to another (tell us the languages involved).

5. In December 1773, a New York newspaper reported that groups of Dutch families had gathered to honor the anniversary of Nicholas's death. In 1804, a member of the New York Historical Society distributed woodcuts of St. Nicholas at the society’s annual meeting. The background of the engraving contains now-familiar Santa images including stockings filled with toys and fruit hung over a fireplace. As his prominence grew, Sinter Klaas was described as everything from a rascal with a blue three-cornered hat, red waistcoat, and yellow stockings to a man wearing a broad-brimmed hat and a huge pair of Flemish trunk hose.
🎅 Read a book with a fireplace or other holiday scene appearing on the cover (show us the cover) - or - a book with a character who commonly wears a hat (tell us who). The title character, Emily Pollifax always wears a distinctive hat in -Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha by Dorothy Gilman-3/19/23

6. In 1809, Washington Irving described St. Nicholas as a portly Dutchman who flew the skies in a wagon, dropping gifts down chimneys. In 1823 another New Yorker, Clement Clarke Moore, wrote the poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” which traded the wagon for a sleigh drawn by “eight tiny reindeer.” During the Civil War, cartoonist Thomas Nast published the first of a series of depictions of a round and jolly St. Nicholas. In 1879 Nast was the first to suggest that St. Nicholas lived not in Turkey, Spain or Holland but at the North Pole.
🎅 Read a book set in the 1800's - Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman-6/16/23
or - a book with a night sky scene on the cover (show us the cover).

7. Gift-giving, mainly centered around children, has been an important part of the Christmas celebration since the early 19th century. Stores began to advertise Christmas shopping in 1820, and by the 1840s, newspapers were creating separate sections for holiday advertisements, which often featured images of the newly popular Santa Claus. In 1841, thousands of children visited a Philadelphia shop to see a life-size Santa Claus model. In the early 1890s, when the Salvation Army needed money to pay for the free Christmas meals they provided to needy families, they began dressing unemployed men in Santa Claus suits and sending them into the streets of New York to solicit donations. Perhaps the most iconic department store Santa is Kris Kringle in the 1947 classic Santa Claus movie “Miracle on 34th Street.”
🎅 Read a book by an author whose FIRST name starts with S or whose LAST name starts with C - Slippery Creatures by K.J. Charles-3/2/23
or - a book in which a character goes shopping (provide a brief excerpt depicting location or page number).

Challenge #1015-CCC
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Just noticed this....so, starting 12/1/22 and will target a finish by 12/31/22.

Olympics #38 | Pairs' Figure Skating
Timeframe: 11/1/22 to 11/30/22
5/5

1. Pair skating today is arguably the most technically difficult discipline in figure skating. Pair skaters do the same jumps and spins as single skaters, sometimes with fewer revolutions, but timing is far more critical because they must execute moves in perfect unison. Good pairs skaters demonstrate symmetry and parallel flow across the ice.
⛸ Read a book whose total page count contains a pair of the same numbers (220 or 232 work; numbers do not have to be together) -448p.- Hotel Honolulu by Paul Theroux-12/10/22
OR read a book featuring a couple who work together well; tell us who and briefly how.

2. The pairs event combines the athleticism of singles skating with the challenge of unison and the acrobatics of overhead lifts and throws. Shadow skating (in which partners perform identical maneuvers some distance apart) and mirror skating (in which the pair’s moves are in opposite directions and mirror each other) are aspects of pairs skating and contribute to the overall effect of a program.
⛸ Read a book with a shadow, mirror, or reflection on its cover; post the cover OR read a book read a book with opposite words in its title.- Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club by Benjamin Alire Sáenz- 11/23/23

3. Like singles skating, pairs competitions include a short program and a free skate, with each segment receiving a technical score and a component score, and the team with the most points overall is named the winner. The pairs short program consists of several required elements including lifts, side-by-side solo jumps done in unison, throw jumps, a step sequence and a death spiral. The free skate consists of technical skills and choreography that show off the strengths of the team.
⛸ Read a short book (150 - 200 pp) or a long book (450 + pages)- 196p,- Agatha Raisin and the Wizard of Evesham by M.C. Beaton-3/14/23- OR read a book featuring a choreographer of some kind; tell us who.

4. Rule 300 of the International Skating Union (ISU) rulebook states that teams in both pairs' skating and ice dance consist of “one Woman and one Man.” (The rule previously read as “one Lady and one Man,” but the ISU announced it would start using “Woman” instead in June 2021.). This, of course, may change in the future.
