I Scream for Ice Cream
June 1, 2022 - August 31, 2022
8/8 Tasks
1. Seafood Ice Cream
You can find variants of this all over the world. Japan is featuring eel, oyster and shrimp ice cream in many of their ice cream stores. Lobster ice cream in a must in the US state of Maine with it being the lobster capital of the country. And an ice cream manufacturer in the UK has taken this idea very seriously and is producing Fish and Chips flavored ice cream. This cod based treat comes with potato ice cream chips served with salt and vinegar seasoning and lemon wedges to make the experience complete.
🍦Read a book with a sea creature on the cover (post cover)OR read a book that takes place in the UK.- Fairytales for Lost Children by Diriye Osman-6/7/22 -
2. Akutuq Ice Cream
The Indigenous peoples of Alaska have a twist on the seafood idea. They combine dried fish with caribou meat, seal oil, and a variety of berries to make this favorite ice cream. They call it “akutaq” which means “to stir,” since it is traditionally made by hand mixing the ingredients together in ice. Sugar is also added to the mix, transforming it from a hunter’s staple meal into a hearty dessert. Akutaq is served all over Alaska, with hundreds of different variations, each one personal to the chef and their family.
🍦Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in AKUTAQ (ignore A, An or The) - Kid Lobotomy, Vol. 1: A Lad Insane by Peter Milligan-6/1/22-
OR read a book that takes place in Alaska or a place with a large Indigenous population (tell us where).
3. Brown Bread Ice Cream
Brown bread is a staple of the Irish diet, so why not make ice cream out of it when the bread goes stale. The dry crumbs can be caramelized with muscovado sugar and used
for Ireland’s favorite ice cream. Brown bread ice cream is ubiquitous in restaurants and cafes across the country. The crunchy breadcrumbs add a pleasant texture to the vanilla ice cream base, and Irish whiskey can be added as an optional ingredient to stop the ice cream from freezing too hard. (And, of course, for the taste.)
🍦Read a book with a predominantly brown cover (post cover) OR read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in IRELAND.-Rio de Janeiro- The Taker and Other Stories by Rubem Fonseca-6/11/22
4. Whiskey Prune Ice Cream
Speaking of whiskey, let’s head down south to Australia to see what they do with whiskey … and prunes! A popular ice cream store in Simmo Beach uses a "secret Irish recipe" that mixes mascarpone ice cream with whiskey-soaked prunes. They then add swirls of a whiskey ripple to really get that boozy flavor. I’ll take one of those!
🍦Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in PRUNE (share name)-Rick in Rick and Morty: Go to Hell by Ryan Ferrier-6/9/22
OR read a book that takes place in AUSTRALIA.
5. Durian Ice Cream
Durian fruit is famous throughout Southeast Asia for its spiky skin and distinctive, powerful smell, a scent that's been compared to everything from raw sewage to rotten onions. The taste, however, is quite different. The smell gives way to a unique sweetness and creamy texture that melts in your mouth, which makes it the perfect ingredient for this much loved ice cream. Throughout Southeast Asia you can find Durian ice pops and ice cream at street vendors, ice cream parlors, and you can even pick up a tub of it at the supermarket. In the Philippines it is often made with real crocodile eggs which certainly makes it even more unusual.
🍦Read a book by an author whose initials can be found in DURIAN - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
OR read a book that takes place in Southeast Asia (tell us where).
6. Lucuma Ice Cream
High up in the Andes there is another interesting fruit that looks like a cross between a mango, a turnip, and an avocado: the lucuma. Its plain appearance is deceiving, though, for lucuma is known as “gold of the Incas”. It’s little wonder why, as the fruit has a heavenly taste resembling candied yam. The prized fruit is also responsible for Peru’s favorite ice cream flavor. It is sold to tourists along the Inca Trail and to late-night revelers in the streets of Lima. Lucuma ice cream makes an impressive dessert when served with pecans, a wafer straw, and chocolate sauce made with Peruvian cocoa or dulce de leche.
🍦Read a book that has all the letters of INCA in the title (any order)- Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel- 6/4/22
OR read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in PERU.
7. Basil Gelato
Let me say up front (so our Italian member doesn’t shake her head), gelato is NOT ice cream – it’s better than ice cream!! Italy has certainly perfected their frozen treat so it’s no surprise that there are literally hundreds of flavors to choose from. One of the more common flavors that might seem strange to American taste buds is basil gelato. Basil is typically seen as a savory herb, but its fresh aroma, vibrant green color, and mild taste work equally well in sweet products. Basil gelato can be enjoyed as a standalone flavor
or combined with lemon, strawberry, and even olive oil for a refreshing dessert.
🍦Read a book with a predominantly green cover (post cover) - Cat Talk: What Your Cat Is Trying to Tell You by Carole C. Wilbourn-6/2/22-

OR read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in ITALY.
8. Foie Gras Ice Cream
Even though the production of foie gras is a little controversial (it’s actually been banned in a couple states of the US), it apparently is popular with high-end ice cream makers around the world. According to French law, where it was first produced and is considered a delicacy, foie gras is defined as the liver of a duck or goose fattened by gavage or force feeding. France was the most likely place this over-the-top indulgence was first created, but it can be found in many ice cream stores throughout the world
and is especially popular in Hong Kong.
🍦Read a book that has been banned or deals with a controversial subject (here's a GR list to help: Best Banned, Censored, and Challenged Books OR read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in FRANCE- Riverdale--Afterlife with Archie, Vol. 1: Escape from Riverdale by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa-6/3/22

OLYMPICS #35: Ski Jumping
Timeframe: 7/1/22 to 7/31/22
5/5
1. Ski jumping has been part of the Olympic Winter Games since the first Games in Chamonix Mont-Blanc in 1924. Upon addition of a second, much bigger hill to the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, the event was split, creating large-hill jumping and normal- (or small-) hill jumping. In 1988, the team event was added as a third competition. Women's ski jumping began in 2014 in Sochi, Russia.
⛷️ Read a book with a snow-covered mountain on the cover (show us the cover) - or - a book published in 1924, 1964, 1988, or 2014 (tell us the original publication year).
-pub. 2014- The Reader on the 6.27 by Jean-Paul Didierlaurent-8/17/22
2. By 1992, ski jumping competitions were referred by their K-point distances rather than their run length. The K-point is measured from the end of the take off to where the hill begins to flatten out. On a normal hill, this is 90 meters, referred to as (K90). On a large hill, the K-point is 120 meters, or K120.
⛷️ Read a book whose title starts with K (disregard A, An, The) - or - a book whose total number of pages ends with 0 (tell us how many pages).-200p.- The Adventures of China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara-7/19/22-
3. A ski jump begins with the approach (inrun), which often starts on a scaffold or tower. The jumper skis down it in a crouched position, accumulating speed of as much as 100 kmh (62 mph) until reaching the takeoff and springing outward and upward. Owing to the risk of traveling downhill at such high speeds and the possibility of landing too far at the bottom of the hill, judges are given the authority to lower the starting point of a jump in order to decrease the maximum potential speed of jumpers.
⛷️ Read a book with a compound word in the title (like inrun or takeoff) - or - a book that you read quickly (must be at least 150 pages).-quick read- Why My Cat Is More Impressive Than Your Baby by Matthew Inman--7/27/22-
4. Once in the air, competitors can rely only on body position to maximize their jump. After WWI, the Kongsberger Technique was developed, which involved bending the upper body at the hips, a wide forward lean, with arms extended at the front and skis parallel to each other. Using this technique, Sepp Bradl of Austria became the first to jump more than 100 meters in 1936. In the mid-1950s, Swiss jumper Andreas Daescher became the first to hold his arms backwards close to the body with a more extreme forward lean. In 1985, Swedish jumper Jan Boklöv demonstrated a new technique in which he pointed the tips of his skis outward in opposite directions to create a V shape. Initially ridiculed, this technique proved so successful that by 1992, all Olympic medalists were using this style.
⛷️ Read a book with an unconventional or controversial character (tell us who) - Zazie, the title character is an unconventional precocious young girl provoking all kinds of trouble in Zazie in the Metro by Raymond Queneau- 7/25/22-
or - a book by an author whose first or last name begins with V.
5. The landing is made on a steep section of the hill in a more upright position, with the shock of contact taken by the knees/hips and with one ski farther forward than the other (the telemark position). After the slope levels off, the jumper stops his forward momentum by turning. In addition to the judges’ ability to lower the starting point, other precautions are taken to prevent overjumping, including limits on ski length and ski-suit thickness (thicker suits permit more air to be trapped in the suit and thereby allow for longer jumps) and rules for the placement of bindings on skis. The hills have also been altered and are now contoured to ensure that a jumper is rarely more than 3-4.5 meters (10-15 feet) above the ground during a jump.
⛷️ Read a book showing a person in an upright or jumping position on the cover (show us the cover) - or - a book in which a character is in an unsafe situation (briefly tell us the character and how your book fits)- Charlie and his family are in jeopardy several times as their "elevator" hurdles through space in Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator by Roald Dahl-7/2/22

I would like to speak to someone who can help me with two issues. The first issue I have already inquired about on two separate occasions...and I remain unsatisfied. That is, that I would like to put my husband on my insurance policy. He is a Mexican citizen who has now obtained his permanent residency card. I have been informed that I can not do this without providing 3 years of my husband's driving record. There is no way for us to obtain such records. It seems to me that this is discriminatory...and I want to get a definitive response because the previous agents I spoke to sounded very unsure and had to consult with other people.
Because of that situation, my husband has been forced to purchase outside insurance and that brings us to question #2. We are going to purchase a car this month for him. I want to know whether I should put the car in my name, his name or both of names. How would AAA treat our insurance needs in each of these scenarios?
Thank you, Ed Lehman
