Val H. | 22141 comments Today/night's results:

Western Bulldogs (Blastro) v Gold Coast Suns (Suzy)
1.2.8 (Q1) 2.6.18
5.5.35 (Q2) 5.9.39
8.7.55 (Q3) 8.10.58
11.15.81 (Q4) 10.12.72

Essendon Bombers (Val) v Hawthorn Hawks (unwanted)
4.2.26 (Q1) 2.4.16
5.5.35 (Q2) 4.4.28
5.6.36 (Q3) 10.7.67
10.7.67 (Q4) 13.12.90

West Coast Eagles (Sussex) v Port Adelaide Power (Grizzly)
4.1.25 (Q1) 2.1.13
9.3.57 (Q2) 3.2.20
13.4.82 (Q3) 8.2.50
16.6.102 (Q4) 9.6.60

Sydney Swans (Anita) v North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve)
2.1.13 (Q1) 3.3.21
4.4.28 (Q2) 5.5.35
6.8.44 (Q3) 7.10.52
9.12.66 (Q4) 9.14.68

Adelaide Crows (Deano) v Carlton Blues (RedJohn)
7.2.44 (Q1) 2.1.13
9.3.57 (Q2) 6.4.40
15.8.98 (Q3) 7.8.50
19.11.125 (Q4) 10.10.70

I think I picked the wrong upsets. The Dogs were lucky to get away with a win up in Ballarat. The Dons at least did a bit better in the fourth quarter - 23 points isn't disgraced - but they went missing completely in the third quarter. North were gallant all night and deserved their nail-biting win. The Eagles and the Crows looked the goods.

Richmond Tigers (Philip) V Fremantle Dockers (unwanted)

St Kilda Saints (Lez) v Melbourne Demons (TheFoe)
2.5.17 (Q1) 5.1.31
3.8.26 (Q2) 8.6.54
7.10.52 (Q3) 13.10.88
9.13.67 (Q4) 6.10.106

Brisbane Lions (David) v Collingwood Magpies (Tech)
3.0.18 (Q1) 4.2.26
10.0.60 (Q2) 10.3.63
14.2.86 (Q3) 15.4.94
18.6.114 (Q4) 19.7.121

Results went as expected today although the win-less Lions gave Collingwood a fright - scores were locked at 114 all with 2 minutes to go.

Val, something is not quite right with SJBs score..he should be 2 points higher...I think it's on round 6 you gave him 5 points, when he should've had 7..i've checked his tips for that round..it's definitely 7...so he should now be in 3rd place on 43 points, and I drop to 4th.

message 417: by theDuke (last edited May 06, 2018 07:27AM) (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Anybody watching the snooker of late? For the first time in something like 20 years, I've started watching it again...cos a Welshman is in the final! G'wan Williams! :-)

Quite an exciting semi final finish between Williams and Hawkins..Williams was behind all the way through, till frame 31, when he began to overtake. Pressure was getting to both players on the final frames..both players missing easy shots..but then would pot incredible hard ones..Williams in particular potted some amazing shots during that match. Funny to see his little lad in watching his dad miss some shots in that last frame...poor lad was almost tearing his curly hair out! lol! Went right down to the wire...with Williams needing the pink and black to finish, Hawkins just needed the pink.....Williams got the incredibly difficult pink in...and almost didn't get the black...but it only just wobbled in the pocket!

Quite an usual championship this year, with lot of older veterans making through..now down to two 40 somethings, Higgins v Williams. And to think that Williams was thinking of putting his cue away for good, only a year ago. 15 years since he made it to a final....so looks like it'll be a gud un between these two veterans!

Just simple adding Suzy! I keep a written record of everybody's score and weekly tips....so I just work from that. And anybody who misses the first game, gets a 10 point penalty added to whomever got the highest margin that week......simples!

Just for record...my maths isn't that great either...but I can add! :)

Didn’t really like the bathtub-filling problems but loved algebra because it’s a sort of code.

What I mean is I don't understand where the Points come from to be added up?

I can do basic Maths - but I don't understand the actual process of working out just how to put a particular kind of sum together to get an answer - if that makes any sense?

Er..well..i think so!

Points come from whatever correct tips a player had got...and then one just adds that to their overall tally....same goes for the margins...if a player tipped 45 point advantage for one team and that team has won, but won the match by 25 points, then there's a difference of 20 points to the player's overall margin tally...so say, Player 'A' has 136 points total from all previous rounds, 20 points is then added for that week = 156 points.

If a player tipped a team to win in the first game, and that team lost...say by 15 points to the other team....then that 15 points is added to whatever margin the player put down for the other team...eg. Tigers v Hawks, Hawks to win by 15 points. Tigers wins match by 10 points, 15 points added to 10 points equals 25 points, which is then added to the player's overall margin tally.

Hope that make some sense! :)

Ahhh..good old Jimmy..it's a shame he never quite made it to a world champion. He was my old man's favourite player; I for reasons long since forgotten, liked Steve 'ever sooo interesting *yawn!*' Davis! But there were so many great characterful players back then, like John Parrot, Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins...Willy Thorn, Eddie Charlton, Joe Johnson, Tony Knowles, Terry Griffiths (remember him singing his welsh lullabys?!), Bill Werbeniuk (who used to drink 16 pints a day!) & Dennis Talyor's jokes (& not forgetting those specs too!)...and so on.

It was so different back then in the '80's; sponsorship & advertising was nearly all by Tobacco companies....the players could drink & smoke during games (Alex Higgins was famous for chain smoking during matches!).....the players just had so much more character in those days. Then the likes of Steven Hendry and his ilk cam e along in the 1990's, and they were all so boring! I lost interest in the game after that. Hendry has one of those faces I just wanted to slap! :)

Lol! Sounds like you might also have the mathematical equivalent of the literary condition, called dyscalculia.

I wonder what it's called for those that cannot fathom algebra?!

You know, I once wanted to be an engineer..but had to dump that idea, when I was faced with trying to do sums with letters....it just doesn't make any sense to me at all. How can one work out an equation...when one doesn't know what the values of any of the letters are?

Blastronaut | 1061 comments I remember always rooting for whoever played Davis and that final Taylor/Davis frame where the match hung on the black - and both, crumbling under the pressure struggling to pot it - was a bit dramatic. Also remember getting a tad overexcited when Joe Johnson won too; whatever happened to JJ?
Have always gone a bit over the top when sporting results go my way. England vs Holland in '96 and Owen's classic goal against Argentina in '98 stand out when it comes to mental celebrations. When Buster Douglas turned over Tyson, I was doing some kinda demented conga around the sofa! Nigel Benn finally overcoming McClellan (who's injuries later put the whole thing a little more into perspective) in that most brutal of battles even resulted in me kissing the screen of the TV... which maybe wun't have been too bad if it'd been my own; I watched the fight at a mate's house, with his mother looking on!!

Anyone else get a bit carried or are yer all a tad 'serene' when it comes to the viewing of sporting deeds?

Punt to follow...

Hi Blastro. I have been known to scream obscenities at the tv screen if I'm watching Spurs, Bournemouth or England, and they're losing because they're playing crap. My father in law, a big Liverpool fan, has been known to throw the tv remote across the living room before.

I remember watching a boxing match here in Blandford and shouting in a druken state, words of 'encouragement' to the local fighter. After a while, a pretty pissed off trainer looked at me and said, "Whose side are you on?", to which I replied "Our one". The trainer shook his head in an exasperated way and I remained silent, whilst feeling pretty stupid, for the remaining match. :-(

Craig White | 6727 comments "a bit carried away"

you forget, blastro, that i'm a killie supporter, and in the not too distant past (not now obvs!) we'd get excited if we won a throw-in! not being able to attend the match, i did go nuts when dieter von tornhout (who?) scored the only goal of the 2012 league cup final against celtic! sweet!

it's funny tho' with steve 'interesting' davis. when he was playing you'd cheer on hitler to beat him, but now i find him a wonderfully engaging and 'interesting' commentator on a number of subjects. practically an expert in dance music too.

Foe - I'm with ya on that one dude, I mean if a fighter (or his trainer) can't deal with crowd support for his opponent, he's in the wrong sport really.
FIL a Liverpool fan? Hmm, disown him immediately! : ) Actually credit where's it's due, their European exploits are sometimes fantastic and I'll be rooting for em against Real. Gotta love Klopp's policy - just make sure we score more than they do and sod the rest!

Tech - 'Excited at a throw-in' ha ha, love it! Could be worse believe me - Chesterfield have been dumped out of the Football League full stop. Always been used to town bouncing between the two bottom tiers, y'know, promotion followed by relegation followed by promotion and so forth, but this... a tad hard to swallow.
