I met him a couple of times, a nice friendly man, very enthusiastic! He came to my library ( just down the road) with Bomber Graham for a writing project - Bomber had written a poem! It was a Saturday and he was surrounded by dozens of small boys.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Soft spoken fella wasn't he, Bomber Graham? I remember mates taking the pee outta his 'camp' voice but he was, as far as I'm concerned, quite a fighter. One of - if not the - best British pugilists never to win a world title.
If my dodgy memory serves me correctly, Bomber used to do these public workouts where people paid to get in the ring and try to knock him over - or maybe even simply land a punch on him - whilst his hands were tied behind his back!! Made a lot of money for charity doing this, as nobody could touch him, such were his incredible reflexes and foot-speed. What a guy.
D'ya ever witness any of these events Lez?

message 553: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments No, I’ve never been interested in boxing but I heard about them. Bomber was very well liked, unlike Naseem Hamed, the less said about him the better. Never met him but he had a monstrous crowd of nephews who used to run riot in the children’s library, terrorising the decent kids.

Val H. | 22141 comments Apologies for being AWOL this weekend. That's what happens when family descends on you unexpectedly. Six extra adults, one grandchild and three dogs led to a welter of cooking, dishes, making up beds, moving stuff away from small hands etc. Just getting back to normal now. Who knew three dogs could produce so much shit!

Friday night's result:

Collingwood Magpies (Tech) v Western Bulldogs (Blastro)
1.1.7 (Q1) 5.2.32
5.3.33 (Q2) 8.3.51

Val H. | 22141 comments Our tipsters' ladder is as follows:

Val on 6 (3)
Sj Brooke (Steve) on 6 (4)
SussexWelsh on 6 (5)

Duke on 5 (12)
Tech on 5 (18)
Philip on 4 (11)

CUMULATIVE LADDER:

SussexWelsh on 62 (277)
Tech on 61 (226)
Sj Brooke (Steve) on 60 (265)
Duke on 60 (276)

Congratulations to Lez and RedJohn for picking 7 this week. Lez takes out the weekly prize for her charity - well done!! Foe's Demons could do no wrong in the Top End and have massively boosted their percentage. Sussex has turned the tables on tech (for this week anyway) in the cumulated ladder. Thanks everyone! - and check those scores!!

theDuke | 6491 comments Congrats to Lez, Red John & Foe....some more surprising upsets again. Demons can do no wrong currently..and there are worrying signs that all is not well in the Crows camp! Even the fated Bombers seem to have found their groove now, but is it too little too late?

And as for my Giants...well...I think they are finished for this season...they are too injury riddled, for them to regain any decent position..so not holding any hope for them now. Even Carlton could beat them now.

EDIT: Anita got 4, Suzy got 2. Anita should be on 54, but Suzy overall score is correct at 30.

theDuke | 6491 comments And so again, I jump in first....

Swans - 55
Demons (another massacre to come?)
Power (tight..Hawks love a game at their 2nd home, Port is well rested..could swing either way.)
Cats (Don't think the home advantage will help things much for the Suns, but they do have a good record against the Cats in past games..possible upset of the week?)
Tigers
Eagles
Kangaroos
Magpies
Crows (Neither teams are doing well atm, but the home team ought to bag this one on their turf..didn't I say this last week of GWS? Gulp!)

Yep, Naz was a proper... err, prat. The word 'prat' just don't do it for someone like Hamed but I'll keep the naughty words that do him justice to meself. Very talented fighter with a punch like a mule-kick but what a horrid person. He was arrogance multiplied by google-something or other - my knowledge of large (any?) numbers is somewhat limited. : )
A prime example of somebody letting their own hype go to their head.

Go you Bombers!!! Big night tomorrow night. This week is the week when the AFL celebrates its Indigenous players and as has happened since 2007, fans from both Richmond and Essendon (usually around 20,000 people) will gather at Federation Square in the heart of Melbourne and walk to the MCG for the Dreamtime at the 'G game. It's always a spectacular night of indigenous culture and well worth listening in to if it is broadcast.

See a few minutes from last year's game:
