"BALL UP!" - Val's 2018 Aussie Rules Footy Tipping *Open to Everyone*
Well done Blastro; may your crystal ball never cloud over :)

Here are my predictions for the rest of the first round...
Adelaide
St Kilda
Port Power
Gold Coast
Hawthorn
GWS
Melbourne
Sydney

I'm going to have to read through and catch up first though - is it just me or does it feel like it's been a very long time since we last did this?
Oooh? - "HIYAH GRIZZLY..."
6 months! Welcome back sweetie! :)

I haven't..but you've just reminded of how many folks on here that I've yet to 'befriend'! :)
Congrats Blastro, and welcome back Tim! The old gang is almost back again ....... feels kinda reminiscence of the kindred spirit the boys from Auf Weidershen Pet had!!!! Wey Aye, Man! lol! ;-)

Essendon Bombers (Val) v Adelaide Crows (Deano)
4.2.26 (Q1) 3.5.23
5.8.38 (Q2) 4.9.33
8.10.58 (Q3) 11.12.78
14.15.99 (Q4) 12.15.87
From the AFL's match report:
"ESSENDON has produced a withering fourth-quarter performance to stun Adelaide by 12 points on Friday night and ensure the pre-season hype at Tullamarine will continue.
The Bombers had lost four straight matches to the Crows by an average of 76 points, but kicked six of the last seven goals to snatch a 14.15 (99) to 12.15 (87) triumph at Etihad Stadium.
They trailed by 20 points at the seven-minute mark of the final term, only for a Cale Hooker mark and goal inside the contest's last four minutes to put Essendon in front for good."
Yes, that's me you can hear singing "See the Bombers fly up, up...."

RedJohn did post here on March 17 saying he was back for 2018. I have email addresses for MC and Deano which I can try but they're both pretty old (both Yahoo). Perhaps Lez or Nick might know if these are still current. I might give them a go tomorrow. Failing that, we might be able to catch both of them on the Premier League punt which should be back next week.
I've always assumed that posters accessed these forums via
https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
where you can see at a glance what new threads/posts are up, but maybe I'm wrong?

Forgot about kick-off dates, well almost. Maybe age has something to do with it? Don't answer that.......please!
Saints
Power
Suns
Hawks
Giants
Demons
Swans
Thank you in advance Val and good luck all, especially me as I need it more than most o' yers.

I'll message them on Facebook, Val.

where you can see at a glance what new threads/posts are up, but maybe I'm wrong?"
I track all of my favourite Threads in several different ways - most are just by getting Notification of new posts on them showing up on the Goodreads Site. A couple of them are set to send me an Email Notification of the first post that comes up after mine and two Threads are set up to send me an Email Notification of every post that gets posted on them - and I tend to use these Emails in my Inbox to click on it to get back into the Group Forum ;o>
It was the only way that I could find of keeping up and keeping track of all of the various parts of the Group Forum that I like to follow and to contribute to without also being overwhelmingly inundated with so many of the other different forms of Notifications and Emails that Goodreads use on here! ;o>

And you can still punt on these Games ...
St Kilda Saints v Brisbane Lions (in Melbourne)
Port Power v Fremantle Dockers (in Adelaide)
Gold Coast Suns v North Melbourne Kangaroos (in Cairns)
Hawthorn Hawks v Collingwood Magpies (in Melbourne)
GWS Giants v Western Bulldogs (in Canberra)
Melbourne Demons v Geelong Cats (in Melbourne)
West Coast Eagles v Sydney Swans (in Perth)

Hope that's not a forerunner for their entire season!
Lions
Dockers
Roos
Pies
Giants
Demons
Eagles
Cheers Val

Hope that's not a forerunner for their entire season!"
Well, they did say afterwards that they were very distracted by continually looking out in vain for their UK Aussie Footy Thread supporter on a Goodreads Group Forum ... but still? ... you really mustn't start feeling guilty about it, Dean ... ! ;o>

Here are the results with some info from the AFL website:
Today/night's results:
St Kilda Saints (Lez) v Brisbane Lions (David)
6.4.40 (Q1) 3.3.21
7.5.47 (Q2) 5.8.38
11.8.74 (Q3) 9.10.64
16.11.107 (Q4) 12.10.82
Match report: Steven lifts Saints past Lions
ST KILDA has held off a much-improved Brisbane at Etihad Stadium, kicking away late to start the post-Nick Riewoldt era with a 25-point win in an entertaining clash on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints were given a scare by last season's wooden spooners, with the margin cut to six points early in the final term, but they steadied impressively to kick five of the last six goals and win 16.11 (107) to 12.10 (82).
Port Adelaide Power (Grizzly) v Fremantle Dockers (unwanted)
4.3.27 (Q1) 1.4.10
8.7.55 (Q2) 5.4.34
14.10.94 (Q3) 7.6.48
16.14.110 (Q4) 9.6.60
Match report: Port powers past poor Dockers
PORT Adelaide's off-season recruiting spree has paid immediate dividends with Jack Watts, Steven Motlop and Tom Rockliff all impressing in a 50-point thumping of Fremantle at Adelaide Oval.
However, the big win could come at a hefty price with All Australian ruckman Paddy Ryder sitting out the second half with an injured left Achilles.
Ryder's injury was the only sour note on an otherwise outstanding performance as Port looks to become a genuine premiership contender.
The Power turned on the afterburners in the second half to run away with a comprehensive victory – 16.14 (110) to 9.6 (60) at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Ryder left the ground in the third quarter and didn't play any further part in the game.
Hawthorn Hawks (unwanted) v Collingwood Magpies (Tech)
4.4.28 (Q1) 3.4.22
10.7.67 (Q2) 6.4.40
13.9.87 (Q3) 7.6.48
15.11.101 (Q4) 9.13.67
Match report: Hawks feast on cold Pies
ANOTHER record-breaking game from Tom Mitchell has propelled Hawthorn to an emphatic 34-point win over Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday night.
Mitchell collected 54 disposals to surpass the previous individual best of 53 held by Gary Ablett and Greg Williams, to again put the Magpies to the sword after his 50-possession game against them in round nine last year.
As the Hawks signalled their intention to march back into finals contention in 2018 with the 15.11 (101) to 9.13 (67) win, the Pies again had no answers for Mitchell as he motored to another prolific performance.
He wasn't alone; Jaeger O'Meara collected 27 possessions in another encouraging outing, Luke Breust kicked four goals and Jack Gunston celebrated his 150th game and return to attack with two majors and three scoring assists.
Gold Coast Suns (Suzy) v North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve)
0.2.2 (Q1) 1.2.8
5.6.36 (Q2) 1.6.12
5.8.38 (Q3) 5.7.37
7.13.55 (Q4) 5.9.39
Match report: Suns shine after rain to down Roos
IT WAS wet, wild, ugly and just the way Stuart Dew liked it as Gold Coast notched a 16-point win in his first game in charge.
The rookie coach watched as his men out-enthused North Melbourne with the game on the line in the final quarter, the Suns prevailing 7.13 (55) to 5.9 (39) on Saturday night.
All 12 goals came at the same end of the ground, with final-quarter majors to Jack Bowes and Jarryd Lyons proving the difference.
A wet week in Cairns got a whole lot wetter about 45 minutes before the first bounce, with torrential rain sweeping across the region and flooding Cazalys Stadium.
(It should be noted that while everyone is expecting a much better season from the Gold Coast Suns, they will be suffering because of the 2018 Commonwealth Games being held on the Gold Coast. The Suns won't return to their home ground at Metricon Stadium until Round 11 on June 2. Till then they will be playing home games everywhere from Perth to Shanghai! I can only assume they will be financially compensated.

Well done Suzy's Suns..i had a feeling that they would just clinch it...and well done the Bombers too....perhaps the rumours are right about them then.

That seems right Duke. Canberra will be 10 hours ahead when our clocks go forward tomorrow, but it all gets complicated when their clocks change next Sunday as the zones split differently!
https://24timezones.com/au_map/austra...

My daughter, son-in-law and baby (16 months) have taken a week's leave and drove up to Canberra on Friday (overnight stop at Brown Brothers winery at Milawa). It's over 400 miles so you know they're keen Doggies supporters, even though they expect to get done. They're coming back via the coast (Bega, Merimbula (recent bushfire area), Eden, Mallacoota and Lakes Entrance) and the mountains (Falls Creek).

Greater Western Sydney Giants (Duke) v Western Bulldogs (Blastro)
4.2.26 (Q1) 3.3.21
11.4.70 (Q2) 4.4.28
17.4.106 (Q3) 5.6.36
20.13.133 (Q4) 7.9.51
The Giants got out to a quick lead but the Doggies seemed unfazed and hung in there during the first quarter. After that though, it was one way traffic with the Giants merely toying with them. In the final quarter the Giants' accuracy deserted them, although I didn't see much evidence of wind on the TV. Had they kicked straight, who knows what the final score might have been. The Dogs are beset by injury and lost Tom Liberatore today. Their new, young ruckman, Tim English, did look promising. On a personal note, I am happy to report that Callan Ward is as gorgeous as ever even without his flowing locks.
Melbourne Demons (TheFoe) v Geelong Cats (MC)
6.1.37 (Q1) 5.3.33
8.5.53 (Q2) 12.8.80
12.9.81 (Q3) 13.10.95
13.16.94 (Q4) 14.13.97
What an exciting game! The Dees really should have sewn this up in the second quarter; they were so much sharper, quicker and more innovative than Geelong. But for some strange reason, they let the Cats back into the game and once they got a sniff, Geelong weren't going to give up. Melbourne's ruckman, Max Gawn, missed a sitter from about 20 metres straight in front of goal with under a minute to play. That would have secured them the win. However Geelong can take heart that 33 year old Gary Ablett still has what it takes on his return to the Cattery (from the Suns) for what is probably his last season, and, scary news, Patrick Dangerfield will be back to strengthen their already formidable mid-field!
West Coast Eagles (Sussex) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
4.2.26 (Q1) 5.1.31
5.3.33 (Q2) 9.5.59
10.7.67 (Q3) 11.6.72
13.8.86 (Q4) 18.7.115
Nic Nat may be back (and it's always great to have champion players up and about) but nothing is going to stop Buddy Franklin - five goals before half-time. I really thought the Eagles were going to make a game of it going into the final quarter, but the Swans kicked away again. Some pundits are predicting they will take out the Premiership this year. A bit too early to call, I think.

Eye Eye! That'll do nicely, thank you Val! :)
Cracking start to the season for my beloved Giants...I reckon GWS & Port will be the consistant highest margin scorers this season.....GO GIANTS! :-)
Congrats to Tech..mighty fine punting sir & to Blastro..bang on the bully!
Now then Techy boy.......how confident do you feel for round 2? Maggies v GWS.....Mmmmm.......roasted Magpies..mmmm delish! ;-P
As Val mentioned a few days ago.....can anybody remember the 1st round of last season? T'was very unpredictable..with several of the top teams not winning (me Giants, too)...and the continuing surprise that neither the Hawks or the Swans would win a game for several rounds..I think it was round 7 before the big white feathered ones, got their act together!
Some tough matches for round 2...the Swans v Port ought to be a cracker as will be the Crows v Tigers match..if fact most of them look fairly evenly matched.

There's a subscription channel..but that's all I've found to date...I'm currently checking some links out. The main AFL site fees for live streaming comes in at a hefty £125 for an annual pass...which is a bit cheeky given the season only lasts 6 months!
There are other services, but a lot of them seem to be of poor quality, with buffering issues etc.
I wonder if Val knows which service is best (and at best price?)

the secret's in knowing when to bet against the PIES!, duke! well, that's really most of the time! :)

the secret's in knowing when to bet against the PIES!, duke! well, that's really most of the time! :)"
that's cos I read that the Pies were supposed to be good team this year..clearly not the case! ;-P
