All excellent books there !! I really hope you like the audio !! Darkest Minds has a decent Narrator. I know I end up DNF is the Narrator annoys me.

Ready Player One has a lot of pop culture references in it was so nostalgic for me !! I enjoyed the Narrator and how the story was told it all worked for me But I know we all have different preferences in books and Narrators.

I saw the preview for the movie which is now in thereat but not really sure Im going to be rushing out to see it , It looks like it follows the book but the VR (Virtual Reality) parts look so ...uhmm I dunno cartoonish? I dunno something just not at all what I was expecting.

Laura (llbasaldua) | 790 comments I read
God-Shaped Hole by Tiffanie DeBartolo 4/5

Defending Jacob by William Landay 3/5
I didnt like the ending but wasnt as bad as I was expecting.

Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris 2/5
Was so disapointed with this book

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James 3/5
It was good a little gothic and creepy vibe but was a little much drawn out so the 3 instead of a 4

Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall 4/5
Loved this book not a 5 but still pretty dang good!

Love all the pop culture references. I actually got very excited seeing the movie preview and that's what convinced me in reading the book. I had a preview listen of this and it's Will Wheaton who narrates the story...an 80's star himself :)

I read the book as well Laura and like you it wasn’t very good for me. I actually don’t remember the book in detail just that it had the same concept as the series.

I’m sure it does since it deals with suicide. My son watched the last 4 episodes with me and he said that’s not how high school is. Of course he is living that situation now and he is happy with his life so he can’t really understand why people do those things. I think watching shows like this shows kids that there are some people that aren’t in his place in life. Not everyone is happy. His cousin committed suicide when she was 17 and he just can’t wrap his head around why she would have any reason to do that. Anyway, didn’t mean to go on so much about that but the series just brings the situation to people’s attention.

Yeah, it will always be that way...conflicting opinions.
The show is definitely an important one in demonstrating just that to those who cannot fathom or imagine that some can be in such despair and that there is no way out but by ending their lives.
I guess we will never really understand but we can have compassion.

No hes not in a game its a futuristic story and VR (Virtual Reality) is a very big thing they can go to school and socialize with others this way but otherwise he is a poor kid living in a trailor with his aunt and uncle and has to take care of himself. Agree !! Identified a little with her in the book being i tried suicide when I was 13 I look back now and think how stupid it was !! Now that I'm a mother and have dealt with one of my kids being a "cutter"! I know I will never understnd it it just dont make sense to me so all situations are different and POVs different and dealt with differently . I think tat the show addressees bullying and what not is a good thing but I didnt like the show myself.

Selena Gomez identified with it and is why she is the one producing the show. From what I understand the 2nd season is going to be about the aftermath and consequences of the first season. So I might watch the first season because I am interested in the 2nd season.

I think a lot of kids go through similar things Laura. I went through a spell when I was 15 and looking back on it now I try really hard to understand. I didn't try to kill myself but I had some painful issues that I just couldn't deal with so I thought physical pain would be more bearable. At that age you are so unaware of the finality of it and the consequences.

message 377: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 259 comments I skimmed/finished Tempests and Slaughter (The Numair Chronicles, #1) by Tamora Pierce and I just never got into it. It felt more like a children's book with content added in to make it YA. It was slow and boring and seemed to be trying to be Harry Potter (3 main characters, 1 girl, 2 boys, the girl is kind of bossy and a smarty pants, 1 boy possesses magic that stuns and amazes the adults, but he doesn't know how to use it or why he has it, the other boy is the friend who is funny and a bit mischievous, they are at a school for magic, he thinks he is poor, but discovers he has money, no one has really taught him what he is, there are creatures, etc., etc.) and to me it was a fail. Anyhow- now I am reading A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas because I have never read this series and so far, it is really good!

yes, I kind of thought the same thing. When I got it from the library I didn't realize that it was built off of a previous series so maybe that would make the difference. I saw lots of rave reviews so maybe if I go back and check out the previous books than maybe I would like this one more. I felt like this one was building up for future books in this series, but there were so many pages of nothing happening but school, and day to day routine and lots of repeats of facts that were already stated.. two or three times, and I hate when books do that. I got it already. :D
