Clear the Shelves - 2018

Just cleared another physical book - White Oleander by Janet Finch. I'm still sifting this one through in my mind, and I'll likely be thinking about it for awhile. The best books leave one like that. The writing is excellent and required me, as a fast reader, to take this story in small sips and savor it more than I normally would. The characters were brilliant and flawed and raw. I know all of the women portrayed in this book or women who are shades of them. This book is an absolute must-read! I received this book as a free giveaway in exchange for my honest review. 5 stars

I liked this book. Sure, you know who the killer is. And he is smart and creepy and gives you chills. You know there will be a happily ever after, because, yes, this is also a romance. But unlike most of the reviewers, my favorite part was the book was the story of JT and his little sister Marion. I thought the emotions depicted by these characters about their childhood abuse-- guilt, anger, denial-- were realistic and well-written. The last scene of the two of them together broke my heart-- I too have lost a little sibling and felt just like JT-- raw and guilty and angry and like the bottom fell out of my world. I also liked that Tess grew stronger and more confident as the book went on, and became the one who ultimately saved him. Who doesn't like a to see a little girl power in a book?

Just cleared another ebook - Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty. This book had an interesting concept. However, the word choice was repetitive and for such a compelling story, it was rather boring in the middle. Not interesting enough for me to continue the series. 3 stars

Just completed another ebook - Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. This is a well-written book perfect for young readers! Even though the book is a bit dated, it still holds up in our modern society. I appreciate how the author shows the children's struggles without explicitly discussing them. Definitely worth reading! 4 stars
