Cities Crazy for Christmas
Duration: December 1-December 31, 2017
You may do as many tasks as you wish.
A badge will be awarded for participation.

skaneteles 1. Skaneateles, New York
The Dickens' Christmas festival overtakes this town in the Finger Lakes region, and runs on weekends from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. It offers a parade, horse-and-wagon rides, costumed actors portraying characters from A Christmas Carol along the town streets, Mother Goose storytimes, and appearances by Father Christmas.
🎅 Read a book set near or on a lake OR a book whose author's initials are in SKANEATELES.

2. Vienna, Austria
Vienna sparkles with Christmas cheer, and the holiday season is easily the most festive time of year to visit this magical city. Immerse yourself in a winter wonderland by going ice skating at the enormous rink on the Rathausplatz plaza, set before the town's stunning town hall building appropriately bedecked in a vibrant display of Christmas lights. The plaza also houses the city's largest Christkindlmarkt, or Christmas market, with more than 140 vendors selling everything from wooden toys to candles and pickle jars. Be sure to indulge in traditional Austrian treats, like lebkuchen (gingerbread), waffles, maroni (sweet chestnuts), bratwurst and spiced, warm glühwein (mulled wine). Finally, be sure to book tickets to celebrate Christmas Mass at the Hofburgkapelle chapel, featuring the world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir.
🎄 Read a book where the characters ice skate OR go to church.

yule slide 3. Indianapolis, Indiana
Don't miss the 47-foot Yule Slide, the reindeer-grooming station, the Snow Castle with pretend ice-fishing, and a performance of The Night Before Christmas at the Children’s Museum Indianapolis. Jolly Days at the museum runs from November 24, 2017 to January 7, 2018, and is included with regular admission. At night, families can drive their car around a 1.7 mile track with 400 light displays at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Lights at the Brickyard Event from November 17 to December 30.
🌟 Read a book where a character with children takes them on an outing OR a book published in November, December or January.

grapevine TX 4. Grapevine, TX
There's a reason why this city outside Dallas dubs itself the Christmas capital of Texas—it holds more than 1,400 holiday events every year from mid-November to early January. Among them: a Twinkle Light Boat Parade (where boats adorned with lights sail through the lake), the North Pole Express train ride, the Merry Christmas Charlie Brown! exhibit at the Grapevine Tower Gallery, and classic holiday movies at the 1940s-era Palace Theatre.
❄ Read a book with some kind of lights on the cover OR where the characters go to the movies.

5. Reykjavik, Iceland
The city goes wild for a good Christmas celebration, and starts ringing in the season at the end of November, with the lighting of the town's Christmas tree at Austurvöllur square. The celebration includes choirs singing carols and the arrival of the first of the "Holiday Lads," 13 Santas who appear throughout town during Lent. Be sure to include a visit to the Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður town, a tiny, festive town chockfull of shops selling holiday gifts and traditional foods amid live entertainment. Finally, to experience an old-fashioned, Nordic Christmas, head to the Christmas exhibition at the Reykjavik City Museum, where exhibits show how fried bread is made, tallow is used to make candles, and visitors can learn traditional Yuletide songs and dances.
🎅 Read a book where a character travels from one place to another (does not have to be a long distance) OR where there is live entertainment in the story. Tell us what kind.

hershey 6. Hershey, PA
What's even better than chocolate? Four million lights, live reindeer, Rudolph’s pond, and 30-plus fun rides, including five outdoor coasters plus a Christmas-themed indoor one. Visit Hersheypark Christmas Candylane on select dates from November 10, 2017 to January 1, 2018. Stay at Hershey Lodge, which has a fun new indoor waterpark, and drive through Hershey Sweet Lights, 2 miles of wooded trails with 600 nighttime displays.
🌟 Read a book where a character eats chocolate OR goes to an amusement park.

7. Chicago, IL
The Windy City plans a blizzard of activities to get your family in the holiday spirit. Ice skate in the rink at Millennium Park. Too cold for you? Head indoors to Fifth Third Bank Winter Wonderfest inside at Navy Pier. It offers a skating rink plus slides and rides. Or take in one of the many holiday-themed shows including The Christmas Carol at Goodman Theatre (November 18 to December 31, 2017) and ’Twas The Night Before Christmas at Broadway Playhouse (November 10 to December 31, 2017).
❄ Read a book where a character sees a show or play OR a book from a list that has the word CHRISTMAS, WINTER or HOLIDAY in the list's title. Tell us the list and the number the book is.

busch_gardens 8. Williamsburg, VA
Rudolph’s Winter Wonderland returns this season at Busch Gardens. Running on select days from November 24, 2017 to January 1, 2018, the attraction features reindeer meet-and-greets and themed games, like Bumble’s Snowball Toss. Your kids also won’t want to miss the Sesame Street Forest of Fun and Santa’s Workshop (a chance to see the Big Guy himself). Take a break at one of the shows, such as ‘Twas That Night. Colonial Williamsburg also offers dozens of holiday events, such as skating at Liberty’s Ice Pavilion and a grand illumination on December 3, 2017.
🎄 Read a book a book within the Historical genre OR a book from Lewis Carroll Shelf Award Winners.

9. New York City
Kick up your holiday spirit by taking your kids to see The Radio City Rockettes. The 90-minute performances run from November 10, 2017 to January 1, 2018. Make it a weekend by skating at Rockefeller Plaza, visiting one of the city’s holiday markets, and checking out 1,000-plus gingerbread houses at the New York Hall of Science. Stay at the Omni Berkshire Place, which offers lobby carolers, an edible candy-cane installation, a hot cocoa bar on Fridays, holiday-themed amenity for kids, and a welcome note from Santa.
🌟 Read a book set in New York City OR a book with the word KICK in the title or series name. Tell us the series name.

10. Orlando, FL
This amusement park mecca was the most visited holiday destination in 2016, according airfarewatchdog.com. And both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort have upped their game for 2017. Disney added Sunset Seasons Greetings in Hollywood Studios; it features projections of Minnie, Mickey, and other characters. There’s also a new scavenger hunt with Chip & Dale in Epcot. For the first time, Universal is hosting Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Finished 2/12
🎄 Read a book where the characters ice skate OR go to church.

yule slide3.
🌟 Read a book where a character with children takes them on an outing OR a book published in November, December or January.

grapevine TX4.

Progress: 6 out of 10

You may do as many tasks as you wish.
A badge will be awarded for participation.

Lumberjanes, Vol. 6 Sink or Swim by Shannon Watters

🎄 Read a book where the characters ice skate OR go to church:

Don't miss the 47-foot Yule Slide, the reindeer-grooming station, the Snow Castle with pretend ice-fishing, and a performance of The Night Before Christmas at the Children’s Museum Indianapolis. Jolly Days at the museum runs from November 24, 2017 to January 7, 2018, and is included with regular admission. At night, families can drive their car around a 1.7 mile track with 400 light displays at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Lights at the Brickyard Event from November 17 to December 30.

🌟 Read a book where a character with children takes them on an outing OR a book published in November, December or January:

Lumberjanes, Vol. 5 Band Together by Noelle Stevenson

Tell us what kind:

The Windy City plans a blizzard of activities to get your family in the holiday spirit. Ice skate in the rink at Millennium Park. Too cold for you? Stay at the Omni Berkshire Place, which offers lobby carolers, an edible candy-cane installation, a hot cocoa bar on Fridays, holiday-themed amenity for kids, and a welcome note from Santa.
