Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ha! Imagine snow from October to May, Nosemanny.

No wonder I have no desire to return to Canada, eh?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments If you’re prepared and expecting it it must be better. Six months sounds a little excessive though. I’d miss my gardening!

Pleased to see the chippie had their outdoor tables and chairs out again though :)

message 3153: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Pfft. There have been years where first snow was in September and last was June.

Difference is, back home there's lots of sunny days in there. In the UK, it's just grey and grim for weeks at a time.

I couldn't live with that long term.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments You need to visit the east side of the country Patti. Much brighter and drier than the west!

message 3155: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yeah, the south east. Like back to the equator.

message 3156: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Well, that was an adventure! Two and a half hours to get to work, including 40 minutes waiting on a freezing platform. The South West trains announce that they're going to stop running services after 8 pm.

Wait at Waterloo station for more than an hour on the way back. Took me more than three hours.

Home now. Will be getting inside a hot bath and then outside a dram of something Scottish.

message 3157: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Apart from Monday, I worked from home all week. Heating was on full blast, leaving me with a dry and parched throat. Some Pepsi fresh from the fridge soothed that particular problem.

Off down the chip shop soon.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Glad you made it home safe Will. Neighbours lodger went out for bread and milk, checked if I needed anything so got him to pick up my prescription, I just had to collect it, and my tea, from my neighbours house. They have now closed the shop! Car doesn't look to have had any damage from the wheely bin. Me and Lucy are locked in and snuggled on the sofa, best place in this weather

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I looked out at my garden. I may have to move some snow before the Tesco driver can get in tomorrow. Unless the rain forecast washes it away. I can hope...

message 3160: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments It's up to -2 outside! Feels almost mild. Almost.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Tim, your boiler problem isn’t that it’s a frozen pipe in a condensing boiler is it. My neighbours conked and OH told him to thaw it gently and now he’s warm again.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Cake help requires ( so this is clearly the best place to ask)

There's a cake shown in an advert for Eve mattresses... what is it called? And where can I get a recipe?

message 3163: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No idea. I'd have to see the advert.

Got a YouTube link?

message 3164: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all.
Had to get local children to stop throwing snowballs at our house yesterday. I'm sick of this weather now.

message 3165: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Good morning all. Snow seems to be melting a little. Glad I don't have to go anywhere today.

Have a good weekend all,

message 3166: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dave is meant to fly back tonight. The weather better cooperate.

message 3167: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Morning. Signs of drippy melting outside :)

@Lynne: no, my problem is the pump. I think the impeller shattered - it was a very loud gadugadugadugabang anyhow!

message 3168: by M.T. (last edited Mar 03, 2018 01:26AM) (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments We had actual snow for the first time in several years. A good four inches - over my ankles anyway. Our boiler's 'white pipe' froze on wed night. Luckily there's an outside electrical socket nearby so McOther thawed it with my hair dryer. Mum and Dad's heating went off but the gardener popped in and got it going again.

It's been fucking freezing here since Tuesday. No 'Emma' snow fell until last night - even though the sky looked full of it - but by 11 when we went to bed it was all topped up to four inches deep again. This morning it's melting. In laws in Melrose looks like the Alps. About a foot of snow on the roofs and up to Dad in law's knees.

Wearing ski kit is getting old now and I'm fed up with changing my trousers every time I come into the house, the soggy boots on soggy newspaper by the door, being very very cold, walking carefully - even in my Canadian snow boots - and my knees are royally pissed off at not being able to do any of the 6 - 8 miles I walk each day on a bike. Have walked 36.24 miles this week. Not bad for someone whose knees hurt too much to walk normally though. :-)

It was weird snow though. McOther was due to get a tyre fixed and couldn't get the Alfa off the drive. Front wheel drive but the wheels just span and span it wasn't icy or Meltybrainicos - ? My iPad learned that word from me but in this instance I just meant melty - it just compacted and went slippery. Then again you can't turn off the traction control and in this kind of weather it is not your friend. The Chelsea Tractor was fine but it's designed for that sort of thing so I can see how loads of folks got stuck. Scotland and the North have gritters and snow ploughs but we only have about 24 hours of snow once in a blue moon so places like here there are gritters but no snow ploughs. Down in Sussex there are only a few gritters. It's all about economics really.

Hope everyone is safe and warm.

I'm actually looking forward to warmer rain next week.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all, snowing again! And half the beach has gone, there's a a new 'cliff' in the sand of about a metre drop at high tide line. Three days of wild seas have done that - incredible

message 3170: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning. Still a little 'icing sugar' snow drifting down but the wind has dropped and the chicken has ventured out. She's now 'dust-bathing' in a patch of cold wet ground. She looks jolly contented out there.

Sister stayed over last night. Her outside pipe to her washer (in an outhouse) had burst and she had to turn all the water off. Himself is going round to cap it later this morning till she can get a plumber. Meanwhile she'll bring her washing here.

Whoopie-doo!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments You know how to throw a party Kath!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Morning all, woke up at usual time, fed the cats and went back to bed with a cup of tea, didn't manage any more sleep but me and Lucy had nice cuddles while watching TV. Foot is killing me, my neighbour was considering going food shopping today, I may just give her a list. Housework and TV today

Wow, that's astonishing R! Glad you can help your sister Kath, bless the chicken. Loving the new word MT! Hope Dave can fly Patti, where is he flying from?

message 3173: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Heathrow, Desley. Not until this evening, so I'm sure it'll be fine.

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Morning everyone.

Seems warmer - icicles are disappearing and himself is making noises about venturing out through the drifts for bread and milk. I rather suspect the early birds will have cleared the shelves by now though.

It seems as though Sis and BIL have managed to get away for their Caribbean cruise as there haven't been any stressed messages from Birmingham airport - they were having to walk half a mile down to the main road at 3.00am this morning for their lift.

yes we've got a thin sprinkling of 'icing sugar' which fell as I was feeding sheep

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Raining here - well it is Wales! Slowly thawing, other half has ventured out with both dogs. If he falls over I do hope they drag him home. I suggested he could wait a bit but he doesn’t do ‘waiting’.
Sorry about your pump Tim. We are supposed to be having a new boiler later in the month and I worry about our pump. It’s massive it’s like half a dustbin, tucked away in an almost inaccessible place under the eaves in a kitchen extension. You have to crawl through a gap in half an old outside wall which is now inside and get flat on your stomach in years of dust and fibreglass insulation. It’s donkeys years old too.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments The world has been washed clean by the huge circling storm off the coast of New Jersey yesterday. Don't know how the shore areas have fared yet - need to go watch the news. Here we had 70 mph winds - it snowed horizontally for hours.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Alicia wrote: "The world has been washed clean by the huge circling storm off the coast of New Jersey yesterday. Don't know how the shore areas have fared yet - need to go watch the news. Here we had 70 mph winds..."

Is that what we had? It was heading east.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Well, despite my neighbour offering to get my shopping for me, I decided to struggle and go with her, as I haven't got further than her house since Mon, so a change of scenery was welcome. Was glad to get back and take a painkiller though, and I spent more by going by myself. Took advantage of having walking boots on to get through the snow drift in front of the bins, and sorted out the windscreen cover on the car. Everything is slushy and dirty outside, as it has got above freezing.

I don't think so: I think this one came up the Atlantic coast from somewhere south, but I haven't been following the details, so I may be wrong.

Suggestion: take your painkillers prophylactically when you know you're going to need them. It will save you the wait time from when you take them to when they become effective. And you can eat a little something to keep your stomach from screaming at you.

Unfortunately I had gone shopping without them!! I had taken some and an anti-inflammatory a couple of hours before going though, but it was the most I've walked since Monday.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Poor Desley - ouch!

Hope you get your results soon - and it's something fixable.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Thanks, I don't think it is my arthritis as my middle toe is bruised underneath and elevating to rest gives me pins and needles. Appear to have twinged my shoulder, hope that clears overnight or hoovering will be painful

I think it's something that needs looking at to be honest, because it's dragged on far too long. I had something wrong with my metatarsal and it was giving me gyp for a time, but the X rays came back clear and I bought a couple of sets of gel insoles for the two sets of trainers I use most often (Wellingtons were actually painless to walk it.)
Today I walked about twelve miles, on top of what I normally do and had very little discomfort indeed.

Have you got gel insoles?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments I got some foam insoles before I saw the doc, nol improvement but I think my problem this morning was wearing slippers rather than mules, barefoot is impossible so don't think slippers were good. Unfortunately I do take longer to heal, was months last year for my arthritis flare up to settle down, and about a month longer than the doc thought.

message 3187: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I picked up some gel insoles rather than foam. I can demolish a set of poundland foam insoles in a week!

I got these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

which seem OK and at the money worth a try :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Thanks Jim, have ordered a pair

Well I picked up a pair for a tenner at shop in town, and I picked up these of Amazon, and frankly I cannot see that one is three times as good as the other

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Mountain warehouse are doing two for one on gel insoles so I got two sets last Saturday for £11.99.

Snow is melting here and I'm actually pleased.

Was doing a blog post yesterday ... Not up yet, sorry, and discovered some fairly worrying facts about the family toboggan I.e. That it's a collectors item. Luckily it's too knackered for a collector to want it and it's still at Mum and Dad's- only the big grandchild has used it this generation.

message 3194: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Morning. Snow's all gone here! :) (maybe the plumber will deign to come now . . .)

message 3195: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Glad Dave got back okay, Patti; and hope you feel beter Desley.

Fresh snowfall here. I'm very much keen to see the back of it now so we can actually get things done.

message 3197: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! Welcome back Dave.

I've got some £23 gel supports and some pound shop ones - and a pair of £2 ones from a not-quite-pound shop. I can't tell the difference, just that I'm far better with any than none.

And now it's raining. Whoopie-do!

message 3198: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Morning all. The snow has gone almost as quickly as it came. Saturday morning I drove to an almost deserted Sainsbugs in slushy snowiness. By the afternoon it has all melted to nothing.

Ah well, it was dramatic while it lasted. Hope folks in the rest of the country are managing.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Summer has arrived here.

Well, Welsh summer, anyway. Went shopping without a jacket.

Gonna make a pot of tea and have some of these hundreds of cookies.

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Morning everyone.

Just a little snow drifting down this am.

Second-day stew tonight so no elaborate prep for dinner - considering putting it in the oven with a suet crust.

Glad Dave's back, Patti. Enjoy your gourmet weekend!
