Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Thick ice on the chicken's water here too. She poked her beak out of the hen house yesterday and went straight back in. More sense than I have! I put her feed and water in the house. She still laid me an egg this morning.

Cake club today. I went down to open up in case anyone came. We had nearly as many customers as usual. The oldies are tough!

Jim | 21809 comments Yes, we've had water pipes freezing in an old dairy even through there was a fan heater left on all night!

message 3103: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Always a good idea to leave a tap dripping slightly during a cold snap so your pipes don't freeze.

I wonder how you lot would manage a proper ice storm.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Foot isn’t as bad today, have slight movement in my toes, but not enough to try and walk the 3 miles to work!! Appears that about 10 people have made it, one got half way and turned round, can’t blame her. Had an e-mail saying the offices are closing at 1, I will keep my e-mails open just in case something urgent comes in. Very windy here, the amount of wheely bins I can hear falling over is unbelievable.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments That counts as proper, yes.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments There must be a blizzard coming ... Waitrose has sold out of thai basil and coriander. Surrey households must be stocking up on the wherewithal to make pad thai. The end of the world is nigh, I tell you.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Stay warm - weather reports on the news make it sound pretty dismal. Desley, stay home and don't require rescuing!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Yeah, its not pleasant, not even going to my neighbours. Me and Lucy were snuggling with the heated blanket but I've made her move so I can have a cup of tea

remember if we ever got that sort of thing, we'd be as geared up for it. It's just that we don't bother building for conditions we never meet.
As it is the vast majority of the current weather is hype. It's frankly not a lot different from what I've seen ten or a dozen times before, and even I can remember a lot worse.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Still snowing here .... and more predicted. Postie struggled through at midday but the bin men have decided to skip today it seems.

'Like' driving away from the in-laws in the Lincolnshire fens and having the ice shatter off the trees as the car went by...

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Well I shall be walking tomorrow morning if daughter has to go in to work. It’s powdery snow here, blown into drifts which might have been ok to drive in but and its a big but, my darling noticed a trickle of water in the road earlier and rang the water board. They came very quickly. Poor chaps are still working in the dark by spotlights and the jet of water fountaining up is as high as the house and it’s -3° so it’s freezing hard. Those poor men must be frozen and soaked to the skin. I’ll offer them a hot drink if I can stand up on the ice in a minute,

message 3116: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments K's son was out last night in Milford Haven to a burst... back home at 4.30 am in minus seven. They would have loved a hot drink from a resident!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments I've seen things today I've never seen before. Not sure if it snowing or a snow storm. Wind is dreadful, I appear to have lost TV signal, but could be a lot worse. Am planning on not driving tomorrow, might be able to get a lift.

Poor workmen Lynne

message 3118: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Been head down on a deadline (made it - phew!) and see I have missed 218 posts. Will make a pot of tea and have a lovely time reading through them.

Jersey was forecast to have heavy snow last night, a blizzard indeed. We had a flurry! Well, about one cm. Still, in an island that gets snow about once ever 5 years, that is still enough to cause chaos.

Looks terrible in the UK and thinking of all of you who may be experiencing the worst of the weather.

message 3119: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments It's probably not actually freezing here. A water pipe fastened to a wall (out of the direct wind) has had a joint shift when the water froze and water is coming out of it, just a trickle.
So hopefully tomorrow if it's still thawed hopefully the plastic connection will just refasten

message 3120: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I have snow drifts inside my conservatory.
There's a gap at the peak which we tried to stuff with towels, but that hardly made a difference.
And there seems to be another 3 teeny gaps in the windows that have little drifts next to them.
I'm expecting a huge pile in the morning.

message 3121: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I shall check the attic tomorrow as there could well be lots of snow getting in under the eaves. Don't want that to melt!!!

There was another one at the bottom of my daughters road yesterday. Priory road. I wonder if that was where he was. I wouldn’t like that job in any weather but today was dreadful.

message 3123: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all. Local trains are down to two an hour here - I'm debating if I'll actually be able to get to work.

message 3124: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (last edited Mar 01, 2018 10:45PM) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Morning all, I’m not going out. My daughter’s partner isn’t going to work, but she’s going to have to try to get in as her boss says the main roads are clear. That’s wonderful but if the mail doesn’t arrive theres nothing to deliver and if it does peoples’ paths are going to be very icy. It’s raining on top of it now.
The snow was really powdery not like our usual big flakes. Watching it last night I saw the wind blowing it clean off some places and making drifts. Stay safe everyone.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments It's meant to be 18C here on Sunday.

Hehe

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, these strong painkillers are affecting my sleep. Got up to find a neighbours wheely bin in front of the car and the snow drift is still there, just dirty and full of rubbish so asked a colleague for a lift to find the motorway is closed and there is a Do Not Drive warning, so asked to work from home again, if they'd said no I'd rather have lost a days pay, the wind is so strong it would have been a very stressful journey

Stay safe everyone, am ignoring you Patti. Ooh, that doesn't sound good Joo

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments You’ve done the right thing there Desley. Unless it’s vital services it’s better not to risk an accident. The wind is awful here and it’s still below freezing. Look after yourself. Painkillers can affect your driving too.

message 3128: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Morning all. Still got less than an inch here. Still at -4. Still can't get a plumber "because of the snow". What larks eh?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Lynne (Tigger's Mum) wrote: "You’ve done the right thing there Desley. Unless it’s vital services it’s better not to risk an accident. The wind is awful here and it’s still below freezing. Look after yourself. Painkillers can ..."

According to my phone its -2 here. In theory I could have got a bus and then a walk, but my foot isn't up to that, standing in the shower was painful enough.

Sorry you still can't get a plumber Tim

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all. I've just cleared our front steps and path of snow (I'm peching now!) and it's about 4 inches deep. I've never seen that much here in over 20 years. We're right by the sea and usually only have a dusting.

message 3131: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (last edited Mar 02, 2018 01:35AM) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments It’s the ice here that’s the problem.OH is chipping away. The rain that ‘fell’ well actually came horizontally, froze on the outside of the windows, so it’s lace curtain effects here. I’ve not known ice like this here in 30 plus years. The pavement is sheet black ice.
Billy doesn’t like it at all, he doesn’t do cold. Somebody has changed his garden to white and made it slippy. Our vets have warned dog owners to wash their pets’ feet if they’ve been out where they’ve gritted or salted. It’s not plain grit these days and the additives are toxic to pets if they lick their paws.

message 3132: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments We did only get a dusting. As I work from home all the time, I wouldn't have got time off if we were snowed in, of course, but I'd have loved to have been. It would have reminded me of being home in Bacup, years ago, with the snow half way up the front door.

message 3133: by Kath (last edited Mar 02, 2018 01:51AM) (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning. The wind's changed - it rattles the house more! Mattie the chicken has noticed. She was out in her run this morning, though she's tanked up on layers' pellets and mixed corn, had a good drink (one inch thick ice on the water overnight) and gone back in the house again!

I'm staying in! Take care those who have to go out.

message 3134: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments not actually freezing here, tap outside would run, but the windchill isn't a lot of fun

message 3135: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Our tap hasn't flowed since Tuesday. I've had to fill the chicken-water container at the kitchen sink.

message 3137: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dave bought me wine last weekend for while he's away and I've not had a drop all week.

Think I will this evening. Should go nicely with the hunk of filet mignon I've got in the fridge.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Well, spoke to a colleague who left his house at 4am to get to work, he rang a colleague who lives near him to tell her to turn round and go home!! Apparently more people made it in than yesterday, despite the police warning not to travel unless necessary. I may attempt to go to the chemist after work to get my prescription, although at the moment foot is that sore I wouldn’t want to walk even that short distance. In the daylight, it appears my arial is barely hanging on, hope it doesn’t come off completely, it will land on my neighbours car!! Unfortunately I'm working from home Patti!!

Being stuck at home is "work as usual" for some of us, lol.

+8 downstairs, +16 in my office (with the heater) . . .

message 3140: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) My office is shutting only an hour early today, so not so much extra reading time for me.

message 3141: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Went out earlier - the roads are clear in and around town, but out of town, I didn't get more than a mile or two before I was turned around by a jam of stuck lorries.

message 3142: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Back home, if the roads are closed and you still drive on them, it voids your insurance if you get in an accident.

Can't believe companies are expecting people to go to work in clearly unsafe conditions.

Cuz you lot have no idea how to drive in snow and ice.

Why should you, though?

Not on Twitter, but I saw her snow swim photo on Facebook!

She's got balls of titanium!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments My part of the eastern US is under a big storm attack right now, so I'm feeling a lot of empathy as well as sympathy for you all.

The husband has gone to do something charitable he signed up for, and I will worry until he is home again.

I'm trying to get into the many writing tasks, having spent most of the week dealing with the beginnings of selling this house. Spent the afternoon with an assistant dejunking. Where in the world did all this stuff come from???

It voids your insurance here too apparently. One of my friends is stuck at Whinfell Centreparcs. I should have finished work at 3.30, still waiting for a colleague to provide something for a deadline so I can properly finish, another long weekend for me, and no plans.

message 3148: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Haven't seen owt of Rosen in ages!

message 3149: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I saw rather a lot of her in her swimsuit photo!

Rather pale with cold, bless her.

Arsehole stopped drilling then fireworks down the Bulvar.

After a week of 'Ms Patti, Ms Patti!' I don't think craving a bit of quiet is too much to ask.

Gawd, I miss Dave.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Bored with snow now.

The drifts are a good 3 to 4 metres deep up the hill now, even the farmers aren’t getting through on their tractors. Coast road is cleared enough so there have been deliveries to the shops today though.
