Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments It actually brightened enough for me to load up the car with all the furniture and fittings and drive down to the harbour to arrange my hut. Needed a good sweep out first! Back tomorrow with the easel and paintings to hang. It's supposed to be sunny so hopefully there will be a few people around just desperate to buy some art ;)

Jud, Desley: I have been conducting an accidental experiment with sleep - and sugar.

A little background; we have dinner here around 6pm, the last seating. There is always dessert, and some of them are quite good.

It's becoming clearer and clearer that the nights I have even ONE of the sugary desserts - a cream puff, some real ice cream, a piece of birthday cake - that night I can't settle down, and get up many times, and my legs twitch, and the sleep is horrid.

If I don't have that dessert, I may have trouble making the decisions to go to bed, but I don't get up more than once, and I'm never up in the middle of the night because I'm so hungry I can't sleep.

Even someone as thick as I am being eventually figures it out.

I can't have ANY. Low-carb versions are fine, in small quantities, and a half-cup worth of cantaloupe didn't cause problems (not much fruit sugar).

It irritates me to be so delicate, but, unless I want to keep 'accidentally' having one because it looks so good, I'm shooting myself in the sleep department if I indulge.

I just told husband he will be losing a very small bite of his.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments If I were you I’d would save my pudding and have it for breakfast :D

message 10454: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4839 comments That's the problem, Rosemary: you are not allowed to save anything from your 'meal of the day.'

The temptation is so strong - take this now, or you won't get any goodies - that I fail consistently.

But this little experiment of mine is showing me how much I pay for that. I'm getting better at not even looking at the desserts counter, but it's very hard work.

Ditto, I've given up the facility's wonderful fresh-baked bread. More carbs. Sigh.

What I will be doing is making the low-carb brownies I have packages for, and telling myself I can have one of those from our freezer if I need to. And continuing to focus on the salads and vegetables at dinner so I'm at least objectively not really hungry. I don't like it - no one loves self-discipline - but I really can't. Not and write. Not and sleep. Not and function the rest of the day.

Just glad I seem to be figuring it out, and sad I have to relearn this lesson periodically.

Lindsay (kiwi365) | 3672 comments Evening all, been told to stay at home until further notice. Guess I am having a holiday.

Got a new waterbutt and guttering set today. Cleaned the house and got all the laundry done. At least I am being productive.

How is everyone?

With pay, I assume? Many places don't like people who've given notice hanging around (tells you something about how much they trust their employees), so instead of filling in the next chap so the job gets continuity, they worry about you pinching something or doing something - and give you a bit of a going-away present. Their loss.

Hope it works out well in the end.

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Morning all. Thank you Jud.

It's wet and dark in the valley, but at least I haven't been drafted to take the little darlings of year ten on their Duke of Ed weekend hike, like some. :-D

The snow didn't last too long after its initial outburst, so I managed to get some fencing in last night, and I've finished the marking I needed to do by the end of next week, so it's looking like I may be able to relax this weekend. It'd be the first in about 12 weeks if I can manage it! Ooh, and I actually managed some writing yesterday for the first time in a fortnight ... now, if only I can remember what the blooming' story was about!! :-D

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

Starting off with a meeting at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, I've been toying with the idea of changing to a nursing career. That's as far as I've gone with that particular train of thought though.

It's chucking it down here, glad I brought my proper rain coat with a hood!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Didn’t sleep through, but probably the best night of the week! Ankle isn’t great today. Need to get a tyre fitted after work, the local tyre place allow you to order the tyre and a slot online, then pay when you have had it fitted! I better ask them to check no others need replacing, it hasn’t had new tyres since I bought it. Then need some petrol and might be naughty and get a subway.

Well, as long as you are getting paid Lindsay, take advantage – good you are being productive with the extra time. I think the sleeping is due to the clocks changing, apparently it can take up to a week for your body to adjust. Glad you have found a reason for yours Alicia, shame you have to give up puddings though. I’ve also been really hungry this week Jud, it’s not like me. Glad you were able to take everything to the hut R, good luck for sales. Glad you have got BT to do something Will!

My sister in law gave up her office job to do nursing a few years ago. She's gone back to clerical as she's getting paid twice as much working half as many hours.

Tough decision. The only thing I can say is that I shall be forever grateful to good nurses for the improvement they make to people's lives. You would be likely to come across those who make you feel like a Queen.

On the other hand, Patti has a point!

message 10466: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Very true but I'd have better job satisfaction. I am not enjoying office working these days, if I got paid more I'd probably like it more a nurses pay wouldn't be too far off what I currently get, although I would be doing more hours.

Part of the appeal is being able to do some of the school pick ups and drop offs. I've only picked Kitty up from school twice

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Or get your PGCE and look forward to pushing the darlings out the door at the end of the day so you can sit in endless meetings telling you how to mark kids' work in a meaningful way that no one, ever, will look at.

Sounds very interesting Jud. A friend of mine is a midwife and my mum is a nurse (after years of being a cleaner at the hospital) they both love their jobs.

I have been thinking about retraining in design (either graphic or product) as i find it really interesting, but like you i have only gone as far as thinking about it currently.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Hello everyone, glad you are all well, enjoy the gardening leave Lindsay, Will, welcome back. Desley, I do hope the foot eases up and you get some better sleep soon. Alicia, congratulations, it sounds tough but at least you know what’s messing with your sleep.

Freezing here today, where’s a chuffing hot flush when you want one, still I’ve worked out how much duvet to use so the hot flushes don’t wake me and the aftermath doesn’t make me too cold. Woot. Had a great night’s sleep last night, although, of course, some whiskey helped! Mwahahahargh!

Off skiing on Tuesday (well ... they ski, I swim, go to the gym and eat large meals). I’ve been working hard trying to get everything sorted and do all the stuff on my computer that I need to do so that I’m not stuck while I’m away. Have done one issue of my newsletter but need to do another one. Can’t do those while I’m away because MailerLite detects that this is an iPad and goes to ‘app’ mode. Ie lets you do bugger all mode. The thing that bugs me a bit is that the iPad has about seven times more grunt than my computer, phnark. Ah well.

Better go and do stuff. Our drains have backed up and someone did a shite on our drive again on Thursday night. McOther is bravely rod-wrangling so it’s time I went and marinated the steaks.

Was interested to see the conversation about Ayrshire slang, my in-laws talk about doing the messages, which is a literal translation from the French, fair les commissions. I assumed, with the old alliance, that it was a Scotland wide thing. Also hear in laws talking about a piece meaning a sarnie and wee minding job.

Cheers

MTM

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Well, that was a painful shopping trip, even with my socks on it was painful to put too much weight on my 'good' foot! Now shattered, shame it was too late by the time I got back to have a nap. Got 10 mins of housework to do, and then chilling for the evening.

Hope you get everything done MT - I'm trying to catch up on your blogs this weekend I read the adventures and alarums last night but had to give up reading it out loud cos I was laughing too much!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Woke up at 2 feeling like I was starting with a cold, didn’t properly get back to sleep after that. ‘Good’ foot is still a bit sore, but the calf muscle is also sore because I’ve been walking funny. Maybe starting with a cold explains why I felt so drained when I didn’t do much yesterday. Forgot about half term, set off at my usual time and got here in 10 mins, so might manage the early shift all week. It’s very windy here for some reason.

Hope your computer is fixed today Jim. Hope you feel better soon Patti, saw this and thought of you http://www.msn.com/en-gb/entertainmen...
