PattyMacDotComma I just loved these early adventures of the exuberant child (who grew up to become the dashing Sir Robert Carey in his mystery series) in a couple of wonderful introductory works (free!) by P.F. Chisholm aka Patricia Finney.
A Pest of a Boy and A Boy in Trouble.

PattyMacDotComma Beautiful! More than a picture book, it's a poignant story of a little girl in wartime. Captain Rosalie by Timothée de Fombelle and Isabelle Arsenault (illustrator) is out in June and still available on NetGalley.

Kathleen | 401 comments My latest two are dark:

Millennium People by J.G. Ballard Millennium People by J.G. Ballard was strange and didn't really work for me. Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Dracula by Bram Stoker Dracula by Bram Stoker on the other hand, was excellent. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1415 comments I finished Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli. The novel has a complex structure with several interlocking threads. The parents are archivists, the father documenting the sounds of land once inhabited by Apaches; the mother documenting the harrowing journey of migrant children. A challenging book, but worth the effort.

I enjoyed this too when I read it some years ago and thought it was very "modern" for its time.

PattyMacDotComma If you have not yet read Night, the 60-year old autobiographical account of Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel's time in Auschwitz (followed by a lifetime of teaching and the Nobel Peace Prize), it's time.

Ignorance and silence are still responsible for killing people.

Two GR people I know have reviewed this recently, with different reactions, and both of you tend to like Moriarty. This makes me nervous. I have rated three of her books 5, 4 and 3 stars and discarded another (NOT in that order, the discard was in between the 5 and 4 star reads), so once I get to this book it will be interesting to see what I think. The 3 star book was her first (the last one I read) and often debut novels fall a bit short for me if they are not the first book I've ever read by the author.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1415 comments I finished Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth by Naguib Mahfouz. Akhenaten is the Egyptian pharaoh credited with being the first monotheist. The book is an easy, quick read with an interesting structure. It illustrates how people's prejudices and predilections influence their perceptions.

Lol! Only you can tell Karin:) Maybe you should try and borrow it from the library - then it doesn't matter if you read it or DNF it!

PattyMacDotComma David Bowie. Whether this makes you think of Major Tom or Ziggy Stardust, you've got to admit he was an artist like no other. Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara's colourful addition to the "little people BIG DREAMS" series will introduce him to kids today. (And she explains his eyes.)

True enough! I read most of my books from the library and then buy ones I really like for gifts--but I do buy some nonfiction before reading. Very few fiction book before reading.
