Nichole | 554 comments I finished The Flight from the Enchanter by Iris Murdoch last night. My first Murdoch.

Murdoch's books are packed with too much stuff (symbols, fairy tale elements, etc...). That is why it was so hard for me to review this book. It was an easy read, though. I liked it. Here is my tiny review:

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished a fairly contemporary mystery (set in 1990) which was quite good - the first in a series set in Shanghai China written by a Chinese author now living in the U.S. The first book is Death of a Red Heroine. 4*

Nichole, your link is to the book instead of the review.

Chrissie If you have not read Amos Oz, you should.

My Michael is my second favorite by the author.

dely | 5214 comments My very short review of The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee:

3,5 stars because I liked it, but in the middle it was a bit too dragging and slow for me.

Nichole | 554 comments Speaking, of Amos Oz, Chrissie, I liked your review of A Tale of Love and Darkness. I added it to my to-read list along with Jews and Words.

Anybody confused by the slight difference between my review of The Flight from the Enchanter by Murdoch and my comment above? I understand. It was a good story, and I like a good story. That is why I gave it 3 stars and said I "liked it." I did not give it a higher rating because, honestly, it was not that engaging. I will try another Murdoch book in the near future. I have a weird love for "intellectual novels," and I have not given up on her.

Canadian Jen Finished My Absolute Darling. Still digesting - this one was a tough one to read and to rate.

I have not read Oz's non-fiction. That one you added about words looks very interesting. I love how Jews discuss and talk about everything and clearly the book will delve into this.

Thank you for telling me you liked my review of A Tale of Love and Darkness. I read the book quite long ago.

Chrissie I really liked Leonardo da Vinci. In the audiobook format, it is great.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Walter Isaacson is a very good author, a good solid bet.

Chinook | 543 comments I finished listening to Sir Gawain and the Green Knoight, translation by Armitage and narrated by Bill Wallis after seeing someone here recommend it. It was a four star for me.

PattyMacDotComma An inexcusably shameful time in colonial Australia. Murder at Myall Creek by Mark Tedeschi AM QC pulls no punches, nor have I.

Chrissie Esther, I could not read your review.

I do not know how many times I have moved this back and forth between my wishlist and to-read list. The more I study it, the more I think it has important things to say, not at all to be read for humor. It is back on my wishlist again.

Thanks. Somehow I managed to add the link to the editing page not the actual review.

PattyMacDotComma Aussie author Irene Sauman's prequel novella, Saddled with Death is still available free on Amazon, and it includes the beginning of the first book in the Emma Berry Murray River Mystery series, A Gem of a Problem.

Chrissie I very much like the writing of Theodore Dreiser, not all but at least in two of his books. Here follows my review of Jennie Gerhardt:

Petra | 3324 comments I finished listening to The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit by Michael Finkel. I didn't find the story that interesting in the end. Not much happened, I found, and some aspects of Christopher's lifestyle were unsettling.

PattyMacDotComma My favourite book of recent times is the stunning debut Freshwater by Nigerian author Akwaeke Emezi,

Fascinating, poetic, raw - demons and spirits. Publication in February 2018, but it's still available on NetGalley for any reviewers here.
