TheFoe | 2638 comments Hi Duke, for your ' 'Ace music vids', the video I have in mind is actually 2 songs, although the video plays as one. Will you accept this? If not I'll find another one, no problem. :-)

message 352: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Hi Nick..well...this round will be more focused on the quality of the video (the voting will be based on both the vid & song), so i would allow it..so long as everyone else doesn't assume whole album's worth of songs covered by one vid, can be nominated! ;-)

So yeah..why not Nick, knock yaself out! :)

Sorry Helen I think you may have misunderstood my question. For instance Rakim from Eric B and Rakim or George Michael from Wham, as technically speaking they're not bands.

Any track recorded in front of a live audience that you think makes an earlier studio recording of it redundant.

TheFoe | 2638 comments Not sure if I'm asking the same question as Helen, KJS. The track I'd like to nominate is recorded live in the studio before any dubbing I think, and sounds different to the album version. I'm slightly confused as it's not in front of an audience, so does this count?

How many takes did they record before they were happy with the finished one?

I was thinking live in a club, theatre, arena ,at a festival etc. One chance to get it right.

E.g . No Woman, No Cry by Bob Marley recorded live at The Lyceum 1975 is far superior to the studio version 1974.
I Want You To Want Me by Cheap Trick recorded live at The Budokan in 1979 is better than the studio version 1977.

In both these the crowd participation helps to make the tracks better.

Altin Gün's new album is very good indeed (watch out in 'best of 2019.. so far' games). I have Grup Simsek's album on the way. Then of course there Khruangbin's second album which draws on pre-revolutionary Iranian sounds amongst others.

I've come across songs that are either seperate on the album/single, but are often 'lumped' together on YT, cos both tracks follow a similar rhythym or beat throughout, or they flow seemlessly from one into the other; or two tracks that are con-joined on the album/single as one, if you get my drift. So anything that fits that criteria, will suffice.

Helen The Melon | 3419 comments I'm not sure either. Clarification is definitely needed please!

Craig White | 6727 comments oh, ffs!
think of an act recording a song (their own or a cover) that lies outside their comfort zone, and is a departure from their usual output and style. this should be respectful of the genre tackled - a jolly good bash!
a good example might be elvis costello does country with 'good year for the roses'
and if this round is a howling success (not bloody likely) the theme could be reversed to highlight bad examples of this.
think led zeppelin's puerile take on reggae, 'D’yer Mak’er'.

theDuke | 6491 comments I'm toying with an idea for a new ongoing theme...but would appreciate some feedback on this, before i commit to it or not.

It's essentially this; I've always wanted to know, how would previous winning tracks from older rounds, would fare, if they were put into a playlist of say 10 tracks at a time, and voted on. Obviously, we can only go back as far as when we set up home on Goodreads (unless somebody did actually keep a record of all the winning songs from the Zon days!)...but all the previous rounds since Oct 2017, are still available to view.

To ensure that 'we' do not catch up with recent rounds too quickly, these 'special winners face off' rounds, could be held every few months or so, say 2 to 3 rounds per year. We'll start with the oldest rounds first, and we could even include the older cream of rounds winners perhaps. Everybody gets 3 votes to use as they see fit...and we'll find out who really tops the 'charts'.

That's about as far as i've got with it to date..whaddya think?

It's an idea in development, so any suggestions on this, are welcome.

Val H. | 22141 comments I'll vote for anything! I've often thought that with the "Best of" annual rounds, we should have a run off at the end of the year to vote for the best song of that year.

Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments That idea would hold no interest for me Duke. We have already heard all the tracks, I know which ones I liked and which I didn't, I don't see the point in pitting them against each other.
