Craig White | 6727 comments perspective? ok, seeing you asked so nicely.
the inspiration that got me here came from sera's 'take it to the break' theme, whereby, i instantly thought of a song which has two such proclamations (running into, yes, guitar breaks!). both of these passages, for me, are also 'Dennis Hopper Moments', extra special passages of music that push you to draw back your lips, clench your teeth and close your eyes tightly in ecstasy, much like dennis does in 'blue velvet' when dean stockwell mimes roy orbison's 'in dreams'. ok, not everyone has seen 'blue velvet' (what's wrong with you?), so here is a reference point,

https://youtu.be/d0PbwLTLKA4

right? i want to hear your Dennis Hopper moments - could be a guitar break, a drum beat, a vocal passage, it could even be the whole song (tho' your lips would be aching after that), bits of songs that are just perfect for you, and drive you over the edge in paroxysms of pure joy. please forward the whole song but outline the passages that engender the D H moment(s)

here is one example i would use, but can't (due to sonic issues) - the second where keith hudson's 'not good for us' drops into the dub passage 'formula', drops with such heavenly ethereal precision that it gives me a D H moment - it can't be used because the cd, the download, and the yt clip have a devastating separating 'click' at that precise juncture (only the vinyl is true).

this is all i will say on the subject - don't come back to me and say you've never had a D H moment! if this is the case, throw away your music and collect stamps! x

The video cuts off at a crucial moment (and yes, I've not seen the full film. Shame on me!), but it does appear that Dennis is more overcome by some feeling of anger/anguish that causes him to eject the tape, more than by 'perfection'. 👀

message 464: by Craig White (last edited Oct 29, 2019 04:33AM) (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments it does appear thus, but it's the moment when his ecstasy threatens to show him as weak, losing control, overshadowing his all round badassedness - watch the film, he's a very bad boy.

Had many such moments whilst out clubbing in the '90s, do these count? 😁

I know what it means but I haven't a clue how to track down a nomination. I know it happens but it doesn't stick in my memory.

I think it's when the singer throws to a break and says to the guitarist/piano-player/saxophonist something like "Take it away Joe" or Over to you Fred".

TheFoe | 2638 comments Would the singer introducing the band mid song count as, 'Singer takes it to the break with nominative exclamation'? Doesn't matter if not, just struggling a bit with this theme.

Val H. | 22142 comments Foe - question for you. Does your duets theme mean two otherwise solo singers or would it include duos -e.g. Simon & Garfunkel, Everlys?

Hi Val, I'll accept nominations from either examples you've given, As long as the listener can clearly here 2 people sing the same song, (either the whole song or at the very least part of the song).

Fishy_Jim | 1287 comments For the nominative exclamation round, can it be within the body of the song such as a vocal hand off to the guitar solo?

Sera69 | 1922 comments For Fishy, that's exactly the thing i was looking for!

For theFoe and everyone else I'll allow literally anything where the singer (or drummer, organ grinder etc) either counts in, introduces mid song or cues up the next section/chorus etc (think Freddie doing his lalala's with Queen), exhalts another member to "take it away" or basically just does something similar. No pedantry in this corner!

Helen, I've not checked the entire list, but those singles which I did look at all had the B-side listed in addition to the A-side. So, it's a yes on that, so long as the song in question is specified on the list (ie, extra tracks only on 12" singles which aren't mentioned in the listing are not allowed). Hope that helps.

While I'm here, I'll add that only the original albums are eligible (including tracks from 7" freebies included on a non-limited edition basis); no tracks tacked on to reissues, etc.
