Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my reread of The Name of the Wind and started The Bridges of Madison County. I have always loved the movie and when I saw the book on the sale shelf at the library, I snapped it up. It is only 171 pages. I was surprised it was so short.

message 1005: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Hope Bridges of Madison County is a good book! My husband and I lived in Nebraska for a few years and went to Madison county in Iowa and went to the bridges :-) it was pretty neat :-)

Thanks, Stephanie. I will let you know. We have some covered bridges in a few places here in Oregon. I have seen most of them. Cool that you got to see the ones in the book!☺

message 1007: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Thanks Cherie :) I believe one of the bridges had a superstition of being haunted..I can't remember the name but when we went to it there was a cat that followed us all over :-)

message 1008: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished a few short stories yesterday and I've now started Genesis which a number of my GR friends have given 5 stars. I have to say it's different - I've not read a book in this format before but it's very well done! Looking forward to seeing where it takes me.

Mariab | 3059 comments Michael wrote: "I just finished reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? 1 for another book club here on goodreads. It was short and re-read for me. I think I enjoyed it more this time around ..."

I think the movie is only loosely based on the book, and makes a opus for itself (no needing to say i love it)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Regeneration Trilogy which I rated 5 stars. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Later I will be starting The Wise Man's Fear. I can't wait to enter the world of Kvothe again!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Cherie, The Bridges of Madison County is in my "books at home to read asap" for 2015 list, so I hope to read it soon. I'm not the "romance" kind, but I loved the movie. And it was really a surprise it is so short! It seems that nobody writes books with less than 400 pages any more!

message 1015: by Casceil (last edited Nov 29, 2014 08:13PM) (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Read a book written by someone I have known for many years. This is her first book, and I thought it turned out very well. It's not the type of book I normally seek out (I tend to steer clear of "heartwarming")but I enjoyed it very much. In case anyone is interested, here is my review.

The e-book is available from Amazon.

message 1017: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments I finished Mariana as part of my chunkster challenge and now I'm starting Exodus. I've seen the movie but never read the book (and it fits into my chunkster theme).
Mariana wasn't bad, just okay. If you like romance, time travel and chick lit, give it a try. Quick read.

message 1018: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Oh boy, added this one too Dem. thanks.

message 1019: by Stephanie (last edited Nov 30, 2014 06:05PM) (new)

Stephanie I just finished, The Indwelling. It is the 7th book in the left behind series. I haven't done a review for any of the books in the series because I am not sure what I want to say about them. I like the books but am at a loss for words other than that. Next up is Hot Rocks, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Delusion in Death, Unsaid, Wuthering Heights and The Illustrated Man. Should be a good reading month :-)

message 1020: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Finished Two Sisters by Mary Hogan. I won it for a author reading discussion in another group, and I have opposite feeling about it. This is my review.

I started this morningThe Zookeeper's Wife: A War Storya non-fiction about a couple of zookeepers in Warsaw who saved hundreds of jews by hiding them in the empty cages of the animals.

message 1021: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I listened to The Zookeeper's Wife. It was pretty interesting.

message 1022: by Cherie (last edited Dec 01, 2014 03:48PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Bridges of Madison County.
I read through a lot of the reviews and it looks like this book is either liked or really NOT liked. I am on the "I really liked it" side. It was a good story and I admired the author's imagination for making up a story that sounds like it could really be true. I liked the characters, even the fictional writer of the story and that is all I am going to say about it.

I have started reading The Wise Man's Fear

message 1023: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm going to add Bridges to my TBR list :-)

I'll be starting The Obituary Writer tomorrow.

Darn, I have the ordinary one on my TBR but not the O writer. Can't wait to hear how it is....

message 1026: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments You might really enjoy Ordinary Grace, Cherie. I'm the odd one out in rating it.

The Obituary Writer seems to have some similar themes to OG. It will be interesting to see what it's like.

message 1027: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I was up till 2:00 this morning and finished A Crown of Lights. I'm loving this series and will definitely read more books in it.

I'll be starting two new books today. On audiobook, The Obituary Writer (as mentioned yesterday) and Mercy Among the Children which will be one of my cross Canada reads for my left over stew challenge.

message 1028: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I spent the long weekend away from the computer and it was amazing! I only even looked at facebook on my smartphone a couple of times.

I finished reading Me Before You over the long weekend and, yes, I did cry. But it wasn't as bad this time as it was the first time reading it.

I started back on reading Darkfever and should be right on track to re-read the entire Fever Series before Burned comes out in January.

I also started listening to The Quiet Girl. I'm not sure what to think of it yet. It is very confusing. The story keeps jumping to different points in the past and I'm not really sure what is happening now and what is a memory or did this even happen before or after that event. I'm thinking it might be easier to follow reading it instead of listening to it. I think I'm about halfway through it so I'm not giving up on it at this point.

message 1029: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Ooh I have Me Before You on my TBR! Can't wait to read it :-)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Stephanie wrote: "Ooh I have Me Before You on my TBR! Can't wait to read it :-)"

I hope you love it, Stephanie! It is easily one of my favorite books of all time.

message 1031: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It may be a bit before I dive in :-) I have 4 books currently checked out from the library and have 3 more that are ready for me to pick up at the library lol :) one of which I have been waiting a few months for :-) I'm looking forward to my read-a-thon :-)

message 1032: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I just finished Hot Rocks. A good mix of mystery and romance. I gave it 4 stars. Quite the easy read.

Agreed...not quite as "loosely based" as the I, Robot movie, but yeah there are significant differences between each.

message 1035: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I started The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack. Little bizaar and I don't know if thats good or bad yet. I'm enjoying it it just isnt what I expected

message 1036: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I started Oscar Wilde and a Death of No Importance: A Mystery today for the monthly challenge. I'm looking forward to this one.

I'll also get going on Wuthering Heights.

message 1037: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I started The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe for the Length challenge. The version I have is just shy of 200 pages so I should be done with it by tomorrow. I don't know what to think so far other than the movies I have seen of this book seem to have portrayed the book quite well which is nice.

message 1038: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Just downloaded my pre-order copy of Messenger's Legacy which is a Demon Cycle Novella. Going to start it straight away! I was trying to concentrate on Swan Song this week before the toppler but what the heck!

message 1039: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished The Obituary Writer. The title was more intriguing than the book. It was okay, and I will admit I did shed a couple of tears, but kind of a flat story.

I will start The Haunted later today.

Interesting cover. I think I will add it to my list.
Did you listen to the audio version? If yes, who was the narrator?

This is the only one of the series I ever managed to read.

Stephanie Did you like it, Cherie?

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Cherie wrote: "Did you listen to the audio version? If yes, who was the narrator? ."

Yes, it was Tavia Gilbert. I found her male voices to be indistinguishable from one to the other.

I am not sure I have listened to her. I have to admit that most female voices have not appealed to me, with the exctpeion of Davina Porter and the woman who narrates the Bloody Jacky Pirate books (Katherine Kellegren). I liked Rebecca Solar in Scarlet and Cress although not her male "voices" as much. I guess I am pretty sexist when it comes to that vs the sex of the author. Almost all of the books in my audio wishlist have male narrators, with Simon Vance at the top of the list. James Langton is way up there too with Paul Boehmer.

message 1045: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Stephanie wrote: "Did you like it, Cherie?"

Yes, I did, but I have never been interested in the rest of the books in the series. I have no real reason for it though. Just never got around to them, I guess.

message 1046: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I started The Illustrated Man for the group read.

message 1047: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Just finished The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for the length challenge. Not really sure what to think because it was just ok. Thankfully it was a short read :) I may have to add the rest to the yearly challenge... We shall see. Off to report!

Kate Mulgrew of Star Trek Voyager fame was magnificent in NOS4A2. Xe Sands is also very good.

Like you, I seem to prefer male narrators to female. But, sometimes the gender of the narrator has to fit the novel. If the protagonist is a young girl who has a lot of dialogue, a husky male voice might not be the best choice regardless of his ability.

message 1049: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I started The Haunted today. I'll have to pause it on Saturday for the toppler.

LOL!!! I agree. I have listened to a few sample books narrated by Xe Sands, but they did not appeal to me. I did not know Kate did NOS4A2. I never listened because I was not sure I wanted to read/listen to the story. I might re-visit it again though. I am sure my daughter might like it.
