I just finished reading Pride's Prejudice by Misty Dawn Pulsipher for the definition jade - a compact stone, commonly green, capable of a fine polish. Her dress looks jade green to me.

Could someone please choose some numbers for me?

Step 2: 6, 8, 15

Trea, tell him 'thank you' for me, please.

The words are:
#6 luggage - that which is lugged; esp. a traveler's baggage
#8 lullaby - a soothing refrain, as to quiet a baby
#15 luscious - 1) having a pleasingly rich, sweet taste 2) richly verdant or opulent

I have quite a few books with suitcases on the cover. And a certain book came to mind as I was typing the definition for lullaby. I'll look through them and see which one I'm in the mood to read.

I am choosing to go with "confine" and I am choosing Turbo Twenty-Three. Stephanie Plum has to "confine" her fugitives to get them back to jail. Usually this series is a great, fun read.

I read this one recently and it was one of the better in the series - I hope you'll enjoy it as well :-)

Beth | 459 comments My words were:

#11 prospect - 1) that which is seen; view; scene 2) relative aspect; outlook 3) act of looking forward; anticipation
#13 prosper - to become successful
#22 provision - 1) act of providing; preparation 2) that which is provided; esp., a stock of food

I read The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann on 8/23/17, which involved a lot of prospect and provision, and the endless hope (never realized) that they would prosper.

#5 genesis - 1) the first book of the Bible, narrating the creation of the world 2) origin, mode of coming into existence
#8 gently - in a gentle manner
#10 geography - the description of the earth, its climate, products, inhabitants, etc.

Which of those words suggests a book to you?

#2 elicit - evoke or draw out (a response, answer, or fact) from someone in reaction to one's own actions or questions
#3 eligibility - the state of having the right to do or obtain something through satisfaction of the appropriate conditions
#8 elongate - to lengthen; extend

I hope the definitions suggest a book to you. They seems tough to me.

#22 daily -happening, belonging to, done, or issued, each or every day
Book - The Complete Peanuts, Vol. 1: 1950-1952

message 364: by Lanelle, Production Chief (new)

Lanelle | 21049 comments Mod
Agnieszka, here's what you picked:

#7 fuel - anything that feeds fire; hence, that which increases passion or the like
#11 fullness - state or quality of being full
#14 fume - 1) aromatic smoke, as of incense 2) a vaporous or odorous exhalation, especially if offensive; reek; as, sulfurous fumes

I'm surprised that the fuel definition doesn't say anything about fuel for vehicles! (I need to get a better dictionary.)

Thank you for the definitions!

As for a really great dictionary I love so much my Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (I have an older edition) it has 1492 pages of definitions plus 100 pages of graphic (definitions) and great lists. I'm not sure if the definitions wouldn't be too extensive for this challenge but that's for you to decide :-)

message 366: by Agnieszka (last edited Nov 27, 2017 12:07PM) (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2039 comments I run out of characters in my previous post :-)

My next picks: 72: 7, 11 & 14
#7 fuel - anything that feeds fire; hence, that which increases passion or the like => fire on cover; erotica or spicy romance; motor-opererated vehicles on cover
#11 fullness - state or quality of being full => (non-fiction:) personal development or spiritual life
#14 fume - 1) aromatic smoke, as of incense 2) a vaporous or odorous exhalation, especially if offensive; reek; as, sulfurous fumes => smoke in title or on cover; smelly animals on cover or in the title

31/8: I read yesterday Web of Deceit (Agents Under Fire) by Susan Sleeman - a wonderful Christian RS by a new-to-me-author
He claimed he needed protein to fuel his brain. p.179 / pos. 4616 (#7 fuel)

9/1: My next picks: 25: 8, 13 & 17
#8 brew - 1) to prepare, as beer, by steeping and fermentation, or infusion and fermentation 2) to foment; plot =>
#13 bridge - a structure erected over a depression or an obstacle, as a river, railroad, etc., carrying a passageway / istn't it also a card came or do you write that one different?
#17 bring - 1) to convey from a more distant to a nearer place 2) to procure in or as in exchange; fetch; produce
My first thought when I saw brew was coffee - am I that wrong? And the first book that came to mind was I started this one about an hour ago and it seems to revolve about coffe (in the book club, the pharmacy and local meeting point, the B&B she's staying in, ...)

9/2: Updates are still not my strong suit ;-) I read yesterday the 4th book of The Teacup Novellas - The Collection by Diane Moody called At Legend's End (The Teacup Novellas #4) by Diane Moody (with 178 pages I wouldn't call it a novella but who cares) and found all three words in the text:
#8 brew: ... to pour herself a cup of coffee. (...) She added a splash of cream then strirred the brew ... (p. 371 / pos. 7619)
#13 bridge: ... he squeezed the bridge of his nose ... (p. 429 / pos. 8887)
#17 bring: ... a couple crates of those bad boys (=lobster rolls) to bring home to me ... (p. 368 / pos. 7559)

My next pick: 155: 2, 9, 15
#2 signature - a person's name written with his own hand
#9 simmer - to boil gently; cook in liquid heated almost or just to boiling
#15 since - 1) from a definite past time until now 2) subsequent to a certain past time and before the present 3) in the past time 4) seeing that; because 5) from and after the time when

9/3: I needed something fun and decided to start today Rumble on the Bayou by Jana Deleon and as I expected it's a typical Jana Deleon: fun, quirky characters, fictional Louisiana bayou small town and a successfull big city professional struggling to navigate the depths of culture shock :-) Just delightful. (signature style #2)

9/4: Another delightful read by Jana Deleon too bad I'm going faster through her books than she's writting them and in Germany we don't have access to Kindle World - I really would love to read those as well.

My next definitions: 128: 7, 14 & 23
#7 please - 1) to afford or give pleasure 2) to be willing; like; choose
#14 pluck - 1) take hold of (something) and quickly remove it from its place; pick / 2) spirited and determined courage
#23 poetry - literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature
I think I'll go for #14.2 (pluck) and read The Rookie or Drop Out both are 9/11 stories about firefighters I have pretty long on my TBR
9/16: I sticked with the original definition but read the last two day a different book that fit perfectly: Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck by Rachel Hauck Susanna & Nate felt in love with each other before she learned he's a prince and according to the rules of his home country not allowed to marry a foreigner. For the well-being of the country they decided not to act on their feelings. There's pretty much other stuff playing into this situation and I don't want to spoil it any more than necessary :-)

My next definitions: 159: 1, 16 & 25
#1 if - on condition that; whether
#16 Illinois - one of the 50 United States, located in the Midwest => Hell for Leather
#25 I'm - the contraction of the words, I and am

9/27: Finally I read Hell for Leather (Black Knights Inc., #6) by Julie Ann Walker the previous book in this series are set mainly in Chicago - this one not so but I'm glad the guys from BKI didn't leave the state - the main location of this one is Cairo, Illinois - Chicago's still secondary location. Additionally #1 was also a major factor - the book started with the What if game and various variations of it appeared time and again. I think it's obvious #25 was also included - I don't think ther're many books without I'm ;-)

My next definitions: 279: 5, 9 & 17
#5 rocket - 1) a missile; a spacecraft 2) to shoot into space 3) to move swiftly => military. PMC or (fight against) terrorism - especially Afghanistan, Irak or Iran; cold war espionage could work as well / any full novel from the Fox and O'Hare Series Kate's father finds always a very good reason to bring his rocket launcher with him, when he helps Nick and Kate - I wanted to re-read this series anyway
#9 rodeo - a contest for people like cowhands to show their skill => the Rodeo Royalty series: Rodeo Redemption & Rodeo Rescue (both sit on my TBR for more than 2.5 years)
#17 rookie - a beginner => The Rookie - I considered this one already once for this challenge but read a different book in the end - it looks like I really sould read this one now :-)

10/1: I've read last night The Rookie by Kara Stalnaker and it could've been a really interesting book but unfortunatelly very bad edited and not well developed. With some work there's still hope for it - only 2*

My next definitions: 100: 1, 10 & 17
#1 dismay - an uneasy feeling of alarm
#10 dispatch - 1) a message 2) promptness 3) to send off to a destination
#17 dispose - 1) to get rid of 2) to adjust; to settle (makes me think of a murder mystery)

Actually I would say all three should work with a murder mystery - usually dispatch is involved in some kind when the disposal of a body or evidence is involved and I dare to say every sane person is dismayed by than kind of action ;-) I'll think during the afternoon about a book I want to read for this one :-)
10/3: I wanted to read A Dead Red Cadillac (A Dead Red, #1) by R.P. Dahlke (book 1 of Boxed Set-Three Dead Red Mysteries Plus Bonus Books by R.P. Dahlke ) for a while now and was glad to finally find a reaseon why it has to be now - I started it yesterday and finished today. It's a nice enough cozy and I'm looking forward to read the next book in series sometimes but it's not that great I want to do it now and only kind :-)
As I suspected I was able to place all three words - my starting point was the blurb:
Twice divorced NY model, Lalla Bains, now runs her dad’s Crop-Dusting business in Modesto, California where she’s hoping to dodge the inevitable fortieth birthday party. But when her trophy red ‘58 Cadillac is found tail-fins up in a nearby lake, the police ask why a widowed piano teacher, who couldn’t possibly see beyond the hood ornament, was found strapped in the driver’s seat. That sounded to me pretty much like body disposal - and that wasn't the only one :-)
Lalla's best friend is the town's sheriff and as I expected dispatch (#10) was important to the story as well and Lalla's father was dismayed (#1) to learn his son is gay and of course the entire town was dismayed after they learned the identity of the perp :-)

My next definitions: 175: 3, 7 & 20
#3 irradiate - 1) to illuminate; to enlighten 2) to expose to ultraviolet rays
#7 irrelevant - not applicable or pertinent
#20 isle - s mall island

10/5: I hope my idea is working for you as well, Lanelle - I decided to go with #7 irrelevant a book that's unrealistic and really irrelevant for my life and most most of our lives ;-) but so fun I decided to re-read it (as well as the other two books in series I already own) Color Me Grey (Alexis Stanton Chronicles, #1) by J.C. Phelps book 1 of the The Alexis Stanton Chronicles Books One Through Three by J.C. Phelps . I love Alex' kick-ass-attitude and how she realises she doesn't as much as she really thought.

My next definitions are: 49: 1, 14 & 24
#1 buttonhole - the hole in a piece of clothing that a button goes through in order to fasten two sides together
#14 cache - a hiding place for food or treasures
#24 calamity - an unfortunate event; a disaster
I wanted to read something by Rachel Grant for at least a year now - I think it's time to do it now - I'll read either Grave Danger by Rachel Grant or the first one in the Evidence series Concrete Evidence (Evidence, #1) by Rachel Grant - in both the female MC is an archeologist and she has either to find a treasure to prevent harm to a loved one or while on an excavation she's in harm's way - so both have to do with hidden treasures.
I got this author recommended several times as one of the better and very interesting writting romantic suspense - so let's see if I like her as much as I think :-)
11/4: In the end I read The Secret of Combe Castle (Cherringham, #14) by Matthew Costello - still went with the same defitnition and treasure hunt as main topic. The real reason behind this story was a secret treasure hunt.

My next definitions: 147: 4, 11 & 17
#4 halfway - midway between two points
#11 halve - to divide in two
#17 hamster - a rodent similar to a rat, with large cheek pouches often kept as a pet

My first thought seeing halfway and halve was a in-between-numbers book for a series. I'm not sure yet what I'll read but think I'll go for this option.
My first hamster thought was Rex - Stephanie Plum's pet :-) Perhaps I'll re-read one of my favorite books in the series we'll see :-)
11/17: I went with my first idea and read yesterday Tainted Angel by Sadie Haller see Seven Naughty Seals it's #1.5 in the Tainted Pearl series. I read this book for this challenge - otherways I'm not sure I'll read this one in the next future since I don't have one of the books yet and once again I regretted to read a book outside a series - it included way too many spoilers to the previous two books and only today I found the prequel in another box grrrr. At least now I know I like the author's style and I'm looking forward to read the other two books as soon as I get my hands on the novel between the two shorter books I already have.

I liked the randomiser idea some of the people use and decided to go for it. My next set: 305: 2, 17 & 25
#2 spiritual - airy; motivated by the soul; holy; religious
#17 spool - a round object used to wind thread or wire
#25 spout - 1) the lip of a container from which liquid is poured 2) to spurt; to discharge; to gush forth
My first thought seeing spiritual was anything Chirstian and I want to read something Christmasy soon so I think I'll see which of the many books I own I'm in mood for :-)

11/27: Unfortunatelly I was off-line for quite some time and read in this time An Apple For Christmas (Christmas Traditions) by Darlene Franklin by Darlene Franklin 3* 11/21 & Hope...the Best of Things by Joni Eareckson Tada by Joni Eareckson Tada 6* 11/21 - a Christian Christmas short story & a short spiritual non-fiction book

Step 1: 7 - 360
Step 2: 1 - 25

Jenny, Mr. Popper's Penguins is one of my daughter's favorite childhood books. She says she didn't see the movie, though. She's afraid that it won't live up to the story.

Your next words are:
#5 injury - 1) damage or hurt done or suffered 2) an unjust act
#12 inquest - 1) judicial or official inquiry, especially before a jury 2) a body of people holding such an inquiry
#18 inspect - 1) to view critically; examine 2) to view and examine officially

injury would be an easy word to work with.

Umm. Wow.

Barbara, your next definitions are:
#6 pacify - to make to be at peace; peaceful; peaceable
#9 pack animal - an animal used in carrying packs, such as the mule or llama
#11 pact - an agreement; a compact

Is anyone else surprised that pack animal would be in my dictionary? Certainly the two words separately, but together is odd.

hardship has me thinking about the general nature of stories. Most of them are about how the main character struggles for whatever reason. Not many books talk about how the main character had an easy time of it."

My book fits for both hardship and haste, I believe. A Perfect Fit (DiCarlo Brides #1) by Heather Tullis A Perfect Fit by Heather Tullis had several instances of hardship: the backgrounds of the other "daughters", the loss of parents, the stipulations of the will, getting over anger toward the other "daughters" and their father, the list does go on! #20 arrogant - having, or revealing, an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities

"Argument" stands out the most, as it seems almost every Romance novel has an argument at one point or another, but "Arrow" made me immediately think of the Arrow TV show on The CW network, and I think there is a tie in novel for that series now. I even have a book in mind for "Arrogant"! Will have to see what I can find for this...

Completion post
I chose to read Last One Home by Debbie Macomber to use with the word "heartbroken." An 18 year old daughter leaves her home with 2 loving parents and 2 sisters to marry the wrong man. She never sees her parents again and it is 13 years before she sees her sisters again. Her parents died of broke hearts.

Jenny, what did you think of Go Set a Watchman?

Your next words are:
#1 exempt - a person who is exempt from something, especially the payment of tax
#9 exorcise - drive out or attempt to drive out (an evil spirit) from a person or place
#16 expert - 1) a person who has a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of or skill in a particular area; specialist 2) having or involving authoritative knowledge; skillful

Umm, are you going to try to find a book for exorcise?

Debbie Macomber is good at those kinds of books, isn't she, Michele?

Here's what I found on page 150:
#18 seaworthy - (of a vessel) in a good enough condition to sail on the sea
#21 second - 1) immediately after the first in place or time 2) next to the first in value, power, rank, etc.3) one who attends another to support and aid him
#23 secretive - 1) inclined to conceal feelings and intentions or not to disclose information 2) having an enigmatic or conspiratorial quality

Those are all good words to find a book with. Have fun, Michele!

I really liked Go Set a Watchman. It was a great follow-up to To Kill a Mockingbird which I loved. It had the same openness, and frank dealing with social issues. I recommend it if you like that sort of thing.

For exorcise I do have The Exorcist as one of my planned reads in early September so maybe I'll just wait until I read that one and see if I can fit the other two words in there too :-). I'm pretty sure I can get expert - not so sure about exempt, but maybe ...

JoAnne, here are your next words:

#6 message - a verbal, written, or recorded communication sent to or left for a recipient who cannot be contacted directly
#11 metaphor - 1) a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable 2) a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract

I think message has lots of possibilities, JoAnne.

Would someone be willing to choose some numbers for me, please?

Thank you, Trea (and family).

My definitions are:
#17 cringe - to draw one's self together in fear and servility
#19 criticism - 1) the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes 2) the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work
#23 croquet - a game played with balls, mallets, and wickets

As I was typing croquet, I remembered the cover of this cozy mystery, No Nest for the Wicket (Meg Langslow, #7) by Donna Andrews . I haven't read any of this series. Do I dare read the 7th book or should I read the first story in the series?
