Award-winning author and speaker Darlene Franklin lives in cowboy country—Oklahoma and loves writing about the American West. Oklahoma also has the benefit of being the home to her son, his wife, and their four beautiful children. Darlene loves music, needlework, reading and reality tv. Talia, a Lynx point Siamese cat, proudly claims Darlene as her person. Darlene is the author of seventeen contracted books and novellas, as well as several hundred short pieces. Two of her books have finaled in ACFW’s Book of the Year (now the Carol award) contest: her novella, Dressed in Scarlet, and her cozy mystery, A String of Murders.

I quit the year's reading challenge I had joined when I wasted nearly a month trying to read a perfectly good book that just failed to engage my interest. Some of my experiments in expanding my reading horizons fail.

At the moment I'm reading a collection I'm in, Spinster Orphan Trains. When I finish that, I will probably allow myself to read my go-to reading genre, mystery/thriller.(less)

I'm an aspiring writer, but I'm dealing with two things: I get discouraged every single day because 96% of manuscripts are rejected, and I haven't had an idea for years, literally. There's too many people wanting to be writers, and knowing there's so much competition just kills me a little every day. Many times I asked myself (and God), should I do this? It's so hard, and demanding, and takes its toll on other areas of my life. Whenever I asked God (don't know your faith or not, but there's a similar principle overall), the answer I always got was, "Don't worry about whether you should keep writing forever. But you do need to finish book." So write I did, collecting a small library of never published books and dozens of magazine article that went nowhere. There is so much I could say, I can't begin to share it all here. But I will offer this. I'm hoping to write a book called "100 ways to build a writing career." It's for someone like you.
