A recreational sport is a sport you participate in just for fun, not for pay.
I looked at your books. In Silent in the Grave, a main character does some boxing. In Little Women, they go ice skating.
No Nest for the Wicket is about a croquet game. The Crossover (2015 Newbery winner) is about brothers playing high school basketball.
