*Joins in the dance* :D
Can't wait for new year to make lots of resolution, and then forget about them by the next month :P

If you people re-start Gene after March, I might join :)

Not much progress in Into The Wild, Finished Eleanor and now reading Dear John, which is almost done.

ha ha ha :)
By the way curious to know what "sparked" the reader in you again?

You can take the boy out of the library, but you can't take the library out of the boy :P
Sorry for the agony you had to suffer 'cause of this poor joke
Even though I wasn't here, or reading actively, I was doing as much sneak-reading as possible :P So, the reader was always there....:D

message 356: by [deleted user] (new)

Dear John was surprisingly good. Have you watched the movie?
So far, my Sparks (ooh, I just got that spark pun *facepalm*) ranking:
4. Nights in Rodanthe
3. Dear John
2. The Notebook
1. A Walk to Remember (the best one so far)

No haven't watched the movie. No plans either. Have seen a couple of Sparks novels adapted films. "Good timepass" is all I can say!

Into The Wild going good. Not much progress though.
Although not being much aware of US geography is a little problem :/
At first, I was checking map and stuff, but whew, it's too much. The person (John McCandless/Alex), it seems, almost traversed all the 50 states (and Mexíco too), and the author is throwing the names of the location and stuff and then just moving on the next!! I gave up on consulting the map now (would've been easy if I had a physical map of North America)... I think natives of USA would enjoy it more....

message 359: by [deleted user] (new)

All that stuff makes me wanna read a travelogue on Indian subcontinent ....

message 360: by [deleted user] (new)

Yet to read a word from Quiet 😬😬
Two non-fics at the same time don't work well...:/

message 361: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 09, 2017 09:48AM) (new)

You have seen the movie [Into The Wild], na... So what do you think of the kid?

message 362: by Gorab, TheGunman (new) - rated it 3 stars

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3765 comments Mod
Thats good no? consulting the maps I mean ;)

And what a coincidence. I just started a travelogue If It’s Monday It Must Be Madurai: A Conducted Tour of India

And have my eyes on another recommended one - Special Lassi (Tarinee rated it good)

I've read considerably more non-fics this year... and yeah I agree more than a couple of them at a time is tough work.

And I don't recall any kid in the movie... you mean the protagonist as the kid??

message 363: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Into The Wild. Full five :) LOVED it.
Will start from Lone Fox tomorrow. We'll be discussing it here, or in the RB thread?
Also, removing Quiet from the CR now, 'cause I haven't started it yet. Will read it after Lone Fox.

Yeah, I was talking about the protagonist. Will talk more in my review (if I ever write one :P)

message 364: by [deleted user] (new)

Judging by all the 5-star reviews of Lone Fox, another 5-star in the basket!! Woohooooo!!
December just saved 2017, else it has been terrible reading wise.

So, finally started the book, and the prologue was awesome. I made so many highlights. I'll share here. the discussion gonna be fun and spicy, i feel it in my bones.
Chapter 1 almost done.

message 369: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 19, 2018 07:31AM) (new)

It would inevitably be my last book, my swansong penned in the evening of my life. I am fast running out of writer’s ink. I do not have the stamina to write another novel;

He wrote this in the prologue, at the age of 89.
And at the age of 95, he published The Sunset Club, a stain on his otherwise flawless bibliography -_-
The Sunset Club shouldn't be allowed to see the sunrise.

message 370: by [deleted user] (new)

I am made daily aware of old age creeping over me. My memory, of which I was once very proud, is fading. There was a time when I rang up old friends in Delhi, London, Paris and New York without bothering to re-check their numbers from telephone directories. Now I often forget my own number. I may soon decline into senility and try to get myself on the phone. I have cataracts developing in both eyes, I suffer from sinus headaches, I am slightly diabetic and have blood-pressure problems.

Me on my birthdays nowadays.
To quote Adele, "Life was a party to be thrown, but that was a million years ago."

message 371: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 19, 2018 07:41AM) (new)

Both my parents were long-lived. My father died at ninety — a few minutes after he had his last sip of Scotch. My mother followed him eight years later when she was ninety-four. Her last request, made in a feeble, barely audible voice, was ‘Viskee’. It was given to her. She threw it up and spoke no more. I hope that when my time comes, I too will be able to raise my glass to take one for the long road.

I don't know why, but this made me really happy. I imagine KS also enjoyed his last days, and am sure his last drink would have been scotch, not Gangajal. This man really knew how to live life and didn't give any %$%& :P

message 372: by [deleted user] (new)

that kind of warm welcome won't be possible now. also, wasn't there a veteran bollywood actor who wanted to visit his old house, now in pak..."

I'm also done with Ch1. It was a breezy pleasure.
I think that kinda thing will be possible today as well.... very rare but possible :)
i had read about this in one of his essays from Malicious Gossips. Heart touching!
Quite surprised there are no farts and sex so far :P :P

Whats his DOB? Wiki says 2nd Feb, but didn't he mention changing it to 15th Aug?

message 385: by [deleted user] (new)

OMG!! So, I wasn't the only one who ran to Wiki to check the DOB :P :P
Wait, I'm trying to update it.

THAT IS SO TRUE!!

Also, my book has 18 chapters too ;)

message 388: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, so I edited it on Wiki, but if you google it directly, it's not showing the change :(
Anyway, it's not much of an issue. I mean even 15 August is just his guess.

message 389: by [deleted user] (new)

That school and its children were WILD!!! @_@
How can elders claim that people were innocent back then, when there were schools like this, and the Beatles were singing about drugs!!

message 390: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't know uncle belonged to such a rich family and had an upbringing like of a prince :/ I like him just a little bit less now because of this!

Also, the autobiography covers events till 1995 only, even though it was published in 2002. Wasn't Sunset Club about the later days of his life?
Why do I think that The Sunset Club is the second part of the autobio, covering the events between 1995-2010?
You have read the book, you tell us please.

PS: the sunset!! The SUNSET!! Sunset of his life *_*

I like the prankster parts :D Yeah they are really scary!
Sunset club might be about his latter years. Its a forgettable book.... all i remember is 3 friends all of them quiet old, coming to a park daily and gossiping....mostly about farting, sex and alcohol!

Just finished chap 4!
And I too thought of MKG once or twice.
I agree on the similarities you mentioned.

You'd be surprised to know that young Khushwant turned out to be a lot tamer than I had expected :P :P

Little Kaushal was totally enjoying his life. No worries for anything... I wonder at which stage he became the philosopher Khushwant :D
