Part3 done? :O wow!!
At the end of part 2, I'm now expecting something about his family life since he's taking wife and kids to SA. The formation of NIC in SA looks to be the turning point, where more people started getting influenced by his charisma....

Twinny who?
The one who has watched the whole drama 4-5 times (and will do again in future), made his mommy and friend watch it ( (view spoiler) ), has read the novel on which the drama was based, made fan-arts ((view spoiler) ), made the OST his phone's alarm ringtone and still is mad about it..
Or
The one who watched only the first episode, and found it "okayish" ( prejudiced, blasphemous, racist, anti-nationalist )

Dear buddy, on chap 11 of 4th part. It's boring now. I've no interest in SA issues, and MKG wouldn't stop talking about it.
Also, I thought that when Bapu has written an autobiography, then why should I read any biography....*sigh* but it was written/published between 1925 to 1929, and and it cover his life till 1921 only!
Major actions are missiong.
We will need to read some biography. Possibly Guha sir's Gandhi Before India?

There's one such fight scene between MKG and Kasturba during 4th chapter, aprat from that only formal and necessary details, nothing else :(
Also NIC and related work did make him a lil bit famous, but only in SA. His Satyagrah in India hasn't started yet.

I'm yet to start Part 3... Will do that tonight.
Sad we get only half his autobiography. There are many biographies for sure, but not half as much fun as an autobio!
Not very keen on GBIndia... don't have many expectations from it.... lest you start reading and praising it and drag me along!

I'm on Chapter 7 of Part 3.
Liked that education wala idea.
Also something related to "किसी भी सार्वजनिक संस्था को स्थायी कोष पर बढ़ने का प्रयत्न नहीं करना चाहिए"
Deep but very true - the Sanstha should eternally run on people's money without accumulation. If people stop supporting such sanstha, then that Sanstha deserves to die a natural death.
On the contrary, the system which runs on accumulated wealth and doesn't depends on people's regular contributions, goes astray and often opposite to people's welfare.

Don't worry about that. The essence of BRs are in its discussions. We will discuss AFB whenever you read... and we will keep discussing SKP as and when I make progress.

I'll read and reply to them after reading that part...

On part 4 now....
1. परवाना - couldn't guess it before where you mentioned... But in later parts, looks like a legal document which entitles a master slave relation. Hence Mr. Coats was hesitant to issue a परवाना for Gandhiji.
2. धर्म संकट - loved that part about dilemma when Manilal was very sick. Very difficult step he took!
3. शाकाहार और अन्नाहार के बाद अब ये निरामिषाहार कौन सी बला है।

4. Do you agree with Bapu when he decided to sell wife's jewels with the reasoning that she got those gifts only because of Bapu's efforts and hence that decision belonged to bapu??
Part 4 chapter 30.
What is कटि स्नान?
Interesting insights on his family relations. As you mentioned, some parts of South Africa were boring, but still loving this part overall.
Mitti ke prayog is awesome! But how and why he decided to experiment these things? Daring hai boss!
When he mentioned Ruskin, i couldn't believe. Realised it's the other Ruskin ;)

Will finish Dragon Tattoo tomorrow. 3/4 stars ;)
Also, going home tomorrow for a 3-4 day break. Shall update this thread tomorrow during the boring ride :)
You leaving on 19th?

First, sorry for not using the spoilers. I thought that it wouldn't be necessary, since it's a non-fiction, and Gandhi's story is known to almost everyone. But I see that you still prefer the spoiler tag, therefore I'll make sure to use them in future :)

Umm... There were lots of parts where I didn't/don't agree with him. Couldn't digest his logics for some of his "experiments" :(
The thing is, Gorab, that many of his ideas didn't age well, and if we weigh them by 21st century standards then it's very easy to show Gandhi in bad light (that's what many of his modern critics, including Miss Roy, do.)
The way he treated his wife, according to a 21st century feminist, might not be very righteous, but he was still ahead of his time, in myhonest opinion. The fact that he wanted Kasturba to be educated, even after the marriage -when even now girl's education is a big issue- says a lot.

Also his experiments with water and soil treatment, I didn't like them particularly, but I guess Placebo effect played a major role in the situation. It was obvious how much trust he had in them.
As for my 2 stars, I didn't like the book as much I had expected. Even after finishing the book I don't know anything about him that I didn't know before I started the book. This book just didn't quench my curiosity.
There are many points that I would like to discuss, but I don't wanna discuss any negative point right now, so saving that for future.

Aye aye no no... Misunderstanding...
I'm not saying to use spoilers.... I agree these are not needed in non fic.
I meant wherever you use spoilers, give some hint when those spoilers are supposed to be opened :P (i know you open them 'always')

Didn't expect we will read it in a couple of weeks :)
Quite an achievement!!
And I enjoyed it more than anticipated.
Yes there were serious doubts on his methods and ideologies. At times felt he was a hypocrite. Justifying every action with some logic or the other. But still loved it overall.
I didn't know many things about him. Didn't know the details of any of those experiments for example.....
Will surely follow it up with his sons and wife's account. Also want to read about Godse and why he did that.

My phone is a brick now. It tasted sea water accidentally. I'm going to try surviving on a basic phone for a week or so.... If all goes well then bye bye again to smartphones :)
Only temptation is a couple of whatsapp threads. Will have to figure something out for that!

Read only Ruskin Bond past couple of days. Shamli is almost at the end. Resuming Gene from tomorrow. No idea what else I was reading or had any BR plans. Only remember City of Thieves planned for July last week (which is now :P and I still don't know if I'll be able to pick that up in a couple of days!)
College session starts are almost like reunions :D The first day again must be fun right? Or gloomy with loads of curricular plan and stuff?
Heard any interesting story from any of your friends? Or had any nice tale to tell yourself?

Intruding personal space? You must be kidding :D :D
Got a word from Arpit that he'll be away from all sorts of Social Media for some time. So this becomes a lonely spidery haunted thread!

and a question. *gives him a mike*
what was the first book you read? did you like it? Was it good enough that you took reading as a habit or it was some other book that turned you into a reader?

I don't remember the first book. Started at the age of 10 or so... All the Comics of Dhruv, Angara, Tausi, Nagraj, Doga, Bankelal, Chacha Choudhary, Motu Patlu, Billu, Pinki.... etc etc etc.
So the love for these so called "graphic novels" is not new I guess :D
Proper book? No idea. Must be some Enid Blyton. What I remember as first book was "The Other Side of Midnight" by Sidney Sheldon by the age 15(?) ... and it got me hooked to reading. So much that I read ALL of Sidney Sheldons that time.
And reading stopped after that for a decade..... Started back when I was 25... This time with Alchemist, Train to Pak, Day of the Jackal.... It was like 5 books an year.
