I did a search for the Geeta translator.
He's Edwin Arnold.
The book on Buddhism MKG talked about, it's probably The Light of Asia. It's a poetry. Free on Kindle. Have a look, please!

Honestly, I found Kasturba's character very weak so far. I mean MKG didn't mention her much yet, and it doesn't seem that her arrival in MKG's life had any effect.
So far, she seems just a usual Bhartiya Pativrata Nari, who just happened to be the wife of an usual man.
MKG experimented a lot with his marriage life, and I think Kasturba simply accepted it all.

I took some pictures of paras I thought worth discussing, but it's troublesome to copy the text from the picture.
I guess I'll use a high-lighter from now on

I meant to write "experimented", but in my absent mindedness it turned out to be "experienced" 😬
My comment on Kasturbai was based on the stuff so far we've read -that is, very little. I do hope that what you said -her being a strong, independent woman- comes true later.

I think Annahar meaning you can eat cooked food and shakahar means eating only vegetables."
That could be true.
Also, Gorab, you know some Jains don't eat अन्न after sunset, but they do take fruits and natural stuff. So what Aarti said might be true.

Coco Roti now makes sense.... like we have chai bread or doodh bread, at least I can imagine something edible now.

And being a good lawyer, he knows how to defend, no? Would be a different story if these kinda words for him came from his father (there are no records for that) or Sons (something like Mahatma Vs Gandhi) or wife's (something like The Secret Diary of Kasturba)
I've not read any of those works....
I didn't like him just leaving her wife and newborn... either take them with you or drop the plan! [I know many people differ on this, its my personal opinion]
Yes the Gandhis were not millionaires....but they were better off compared to general people of that time.
Hffff... bottomline is... I'm extremely loving this book. Because it looks like an honest account. Quite an "experimental" life!

Haven't heard about the fruit part. They don't consume anything (except water for few) after sunset.

Shakahar must be vegetarian
Because "Shuddh Shakahari Bhojanalaya" is "Pure Veg Restaurant"
Then I thought Annahar is vegan. But that should be Nirvadyachaar (not consuming anything produced by animals - milk, eggs, honey etc)
Never heard of Annahar. Etymology wise, looks like food consisting of only grains and pulses.... (No green vegetables)

Gandhi uncle not being a good husband/son/father etc. - दीपक तले अंधेरा। Oh, our ancestors were full of worldly wisdom! How true this proverb/idiom in Gandhi's context!

I doubt the credibility of these books, Gorab. Especially the diary one, but can't say much at this moment.
As for leaving his wife and sons, I agree. But I think we are judging the events of 19th century while still wearing our lenses of 21st century. Remember in the first part when Mohan mentioned that he wasn't even allowed to talk to his wife in presence of his family! Considering this, the separation doesn't sound that terrible.
Not to forget the family and society's support, they were closely knit during that time.

But again the logic could be used that I'm a product of formal school education, and thus can't fully comprehend the merits of other :/
Now judging by the current scenario, it seems Gandhiji wasn't completely wrong. We need a proper balance between these two extremes. Our current education system has totally ignored the other side (one of the major reason of its failure), the practical side, of the education, the one Gandhi promoted.

On part 3, chapter 5! I too only heard of that (in)famous train incident! These attacks are really horrific.

We have read almost 200 pages, and Mohan doesn't talk about Kasturbai at all!!!!
I wonder what Gandhiji will think of today's education scenario? He would be totally dissapointed and heart-broken :(
I hope am not going too fast, buddy, but this is upputdownable!

Emergency and Nasbandi were like a major major deal during Indira's reign. Zilch mention in India after Gandhi! And just a one liner that there were allegations of rigging elections against the PM!

Arre...??
I think IAGandhi didn't portrayed the horrors of Emergency, but it did justice to the issue.
But I can't say anything yet. I need to read enough Emergency literature to form any opinion.
Also on that note, Indu Sarkar might win few National Awards. Probability of winning is directly proportional to the amount to Congress/Indira bashing :P

I guess the worst thing that happened to Gandhi was his marriage, or better, the worst thing happened to Kasturbai was her marriage with Gandhi :P
I can now understandGujarat Ke Lalla PM Modi's prespective xD

Finished Part-3. Part 3 is quite long, but I guess it would be the most interesting one. I mean South Africa part was good and all, but that wasn't the Gandhi we know.

Also, I don't remember at all what was the breakthrough act of "Barrister Gandhi" that made him "Mahatma Gandhi". Would be interesting to read.
Gandhi would be sad to know that sanitary and hygienic condition of third class (and railway stations) are still the same, if not worse :(
