I have updated all our future BR plans in message no.4.
Give your proposed BR list too, so I can update it here. We can check and update it time to time.

Okay, about CnP/FB:
We will read both book eventually, so it doesn't matter what we read first.
If we read CnP first, we will certainly read FB later, since it is a highly praised Indian book, published in '95.
BUT if we read FB first, I'm not sure we will read CnP later, 'cause-
i- Gorab is not very fond of classics
ii- he has already burnt his fingers with The Idiot.
Having said that all, I prefer let's vote. We are 3 na.

Cast your vote first, wonly then open the spoiler -_-

My solo venture? Generally graphic novels or Hindi books.
Currently - Menagerie and other byomkesh stories.
Upcoming - Uzimaki Vol3. (Other than the ones mentioned on my reading log)

So, decided that it's A Fine Balance from 23rd of May! Great.

Sure Smi! I guess we will start right away the moment we finish AFB!
Or we can start parallely! Not sure, but sure it's either June or July!

June /July fine with me. I just didn't want you to start immediately as my book is yet to arrive. :)

Together:
A Tiger for Malgudi by RKN- From 8th May
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind- From 15th May (ft. Phani, Rebecca- ref message no. 26)
[book:A ..."
23rd May is perfect. We'll have another discussion thread though, right? Or does this thread become a perennial source for all your BRs (solo, together, and feat. others)?
AFB (23rd) n Sapiens (15th) in parallel. Let's start equal music when one of them is done.
Separate threads would help in my opinion. Will share the links here.

Started Tiger today. Looks like a soothing and animal loving tale we are going to love. Promising start.

Have you started Tiger?
I'm around 35% in and don't see different chapters.
I remember reading a tale about a Tiger attacking goats in a village and nobody could capture him. Must be from Malgudi days?

Another recent story - where a man accidentally fell into a tiger enclosure in a zoo.... and met death. Heard of/Seen it?
Taking a pause on Tiger at 70%. Realised it must be exam time for you and will resume once you also pick up.
By the way, (view spoiler)

70%!!! Boy, you ARE fast!!
I'm only 30% done (or maybe 30 pages, not sure xD).
Yeah, there are no different chaps :(
Anyway, the introduction was written by RKN wonly (not my fault, the finger automatically starts with "w" ;)

Really? I am not sure. In fact, I don't remember any story on tiger by RKN other than the Man-Eater one. But I do remember reading one tiger story by RB :P

I found it very ironic when the tiger was complaining that how humans have no consideration for weaker or younger ones (when villagers killed the cubs and tigress)! Coming from the mouth of a deadly predator, it sounds very funny :P
Nah, not opening that spoiler at all :)
Must be RB. I'm so lost. Surely won't be able to recall it when I read it again somewhere :|
How do you find Tiger so far?

Gorab, please make the Sapien thread _/\_
I checked the index of the book. I should have known that with such title it could only be about anthropology. We are gonna read about homo erectus and what not! :/ Those cave people always bored me... Hope not this time :)

I'm still at 70% of Tiger and slightly busy so will finish it next week.
This has beaten Talkative Man! The worst ever.
Was feeling so irked during that Circus drama! Good to see the tiger as narrator in the beginning... but it turned out very lame! And that too RKN wrote this late in his career after churning so many masterpieces. Disappointed. Grossly!

I remember rating it low... but hadn't reviewed it (pre GR days)..
Perhaps all great writers have their weak bookish moments.

I gave only 2 stars to the Tiger, that is one less than what I gave to TM.
Just checked Wiki. TM was published just after Tiger. After TM, there was Nagraj, which also got mixed reviews. Grandmother's Tale was the last one. GM is less like a fiction novel, since it's based on the real adventure of his grandmother.
So, I think we should stay away from Nagaraj, judging by the pattern, or should not let it be our last RKN novel.

Feeling like writing a review for Tiger..*rubs hand* *evil-grin*
Hadn't heard of Grandmother's tale. Interested in it.
My best loved book of Narayan is his autobiography, My Days.

We've decided to read it once we are done with all his novels/short-stories :)

Arpit.... you already vetoed my top 2. :P
I haven't read many RKNs..
Only others are Guide, Painter of signs, Talkative man, Tiger for Malgudi.... according to descending order of peeference.
Have his whole collection at home - including 2 huge bound books.
My next reads would be Ramayana and Mahabharstha by him, and a memoir called as travellers diary or something (not sure about the title)

5. The man-eater.
Can't be sure of the order. Keeps changing when i think about them :)

At 80%. Struggling to reach finish line. Might abandon.

My Days is beautiful. All about his childhood in Chennai and Mysore and his struggle as a writer. He also mentions about Laxman. I have read it atleast 4 or.5 times and will join in when/ if you BR.
Glad I continued Tiger after 80%, and unexpectedly the end was not that bad\lame.
However, references of Gafur and his Taxi, Jayaram's photo studio, Sriram's Quit India etc were forced (still delightful).
One extra star for the ending - 2 stars. Will review shortly.

Right. It improved a little after that filmy drama had ended. Especially Raja roaming on the streets of Malgudi!! And that school drama was so RKN-ish, but I didn't like anything after that.
And I too thought of Sriram at first, but I don't think he was Sriram! Do you?

I imagined him as Sriram. Could be anyone else painting Quit India. But was from WFTMahatma. No other book has that story.

Quite a contrast! You didn't like it after school part, and that's the part i liked most :D
In the jungle, meeting people. Philosophical talks. And he was the old woman's husband i think :)

Me too first imagined him as Sriram, but if we think deeply, this character is nothing like Sriram. Also he had a successful business running, something Sriram could not do easily. And the wife lady, no, she wasn't Bharati at all. Bharati was a strong figure, in fact if Sriram decided to leave his family and children at once, Bharati might-
1. Have scolded him for running from his responsibility
2. Or supported him
But wouldn't go begging to him to return at all. Her (Bharati's) self-steem was way too high.
Also Sriram practised Gandhian philosophy, which says your work is your worship. It's hugely inspired from The Geeta, whose main focus is on action/Karma. Therefore, I firmly believe that Sriram wouldn't run from his responsibilities, like that man with tiger.
This also explains why I hated that part. The man talked to tiger, tamed him @_@ dafuq! Tigers are not meant to practice yoga and I found all his philosophical talks old BS :(

No no! I didn't think of the main protagonist as Sriram. Was talking about the guy he saw painting quit India. Just like he brooded over other RKN characters.
This guy was no way Sriram. Couldn't be.
This guy was more like the protagonist of Guide! (Still not the same... but similar)

But wasn't the Sadhu guy the one who painted "Quit India"? @_@
Uh uh...I thought he first painted "Quit India", then became a successful businessman, then quitted his family, to teach meditation to a circus tiger!!!
Anyway, let it go. We can start AFB from tomorrow, if it's okay with you guys?
