Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I don’t like the angle of the gun either btw, it looks better in the landscape version they require yet never seem to use.

message 452: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments It won’t generate anything Alex but if I don’t try I don’t have grounds to moan. A number of people have read the free stuff and if you look at the lists in the charts they now do, the ones that are popular are of course free. Everyone knows I’m allergic to “free”.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Amy, I like the lightened version in message 586. For message 590, could you pull the gun back off to the far right so you just see part of the hand? Thank might correct the angle. I think it's the arm that bothers me. Great job, Amy! Good luck. Hugs

message 454: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments That’s easily done, thanks Sam.

Let's go with that, at least the gun is pointing at the bloke now.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Yeah! Like that! Awesome, Amy! Hugs

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Just entered Missing Remnants and Iridessian Haunts into three Radish collections coming up at Christmas. Not expecting them to be picked, my covers don't have naked bodies on, that seems to be what they go for. Just scheduled chapter 19 of Remnants and chapter 13 of Haunts to be released this Saturday. Remnants will be finished soon.

My other business is on schedule to make a loss this month. First time ever. So that's rubbish. I require chocolate.

Carole P. Roman | 4665 comments Mod
Me too! I want chocolate., too.

message 460: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I don't like Hotel Chocolat-frankly whoever thinks it's a good idea to put flowers in chocolate needs help, but I couldn't quite bring myself to cancel my subscription recently (actually I forgot). I saw a hefty payment has gone from my bank account so I'm expecting a box of potentially disappointing fancy chocolates in the post tomorrow or Saturday. They'll do. Then I really must cancel the subscription.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Did she? I’d be sack for too much sampling.

message 464: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I went to a chocolate factory in France as a kid. They had crates of broken bits. I imagine you get sick of it after a while. I mean I wouldn’t but normal people might.

message 465: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I talk the talk but in recent years I’ve got a limit on chocolate too. I never used to. I could eat it all and not feel anything. Funny how the body changes.

This ale has gone straight to my head (leftover from the homemade Christmas pudding. Very flat but I drank it anyway.)

message 466: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I’ve still got a third of a skull decanter of amaretto

I had some chocolate from Tanzania before. Wow! I don't think there was any sugar at all. I love Ghirardelli.

message 469: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Oh gosh. I like a bit of sugar.

message 470: by Erica (new)

It was the "real stuff" but it sure didn't taste like chocolate to me.

Lol! If she asks for money, PLEASE drag it out until it becomes ridiculous. Waste as much of her time as you can so that’s less time she has to scam someone else.

message 474: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Uh oh. Also fine with other people being religious but not me. Sorry. Has she got to money yet? I get the emails and random people on FB trying to friend me.

Alexis | 861 comments I think that instead of bloggers and reviewers on Amazon, the only way to spread good word of mouth these days is by approaching reviewers on Goodreads. Most have hundreds of followers who trust their reviews... I think its time for me to do some networking.

message 477: by Carole (new)

Carole P. Roman | 4665 comments Mod
Yes, but you can't ask them to review your own book on the Goodreads network- or suggest a book of a friend. The other way is to check out reviewers with links to a blog and that post reviews on Goodreads and contact them off-site.

I can’t? Not even by offering ARC’s with no expectations of a positive review?

message 480: by Carole (new)

Carole P. Roman | 4665 comments Mod
You can't ask for any review. If you give someone a book- it's with the expectation of no review and they have to state that if they choose to write a review. It's just stupid.

Alexis | 861 comments I send the first four chapters of my book to a friend, and she told me it was pretty good but that it wasn’t really suspenseful. She said that the book that she’s reading right now. Gone Again by Doug Johnstone, really makes her want to read the book while mine doesn’t.

I wasn’t upset by her reaction.. but I’m not sure whether to pay attention to it or not. I’m thinking she just might not be my target audience.

Some people like books with lots of twists and surprises, but a lot of people like other books too.

There’s this book I adore by Sarah Dessen called “Just Listen” it has about 200,000 ratings, and one reader basically describes it as:

“Catherine A. This is a good book, but not really one that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It had a slower plot line (don't worry, not in a bad way), and there wasn't a whole lot of action. It's more of a self-discovery book. It's one that leaves you thinking with a smile on your face. That is how Sarah Dessen's books are. Realistic fiction about real teenage problems that are actually- unlike a lot of books that I could list off- interesting. If you want an edge- of - your- seat book, I could recommend some… But this book would not be on that list. This is a book you read on spring break, not as a thriller.”

The above is basically what I’m going for; a cute, teenagey contemporary romance.

But my friend’s reaction now makes me wonder about the beta readers I hired.. what if their taste is JUST like my friend and I end up changing a book that others might love even though my beta readers/friends aren’t into it?

...
Oohh, this writing thing is not easy. Lol

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments If you get 200,000 people or even five people telling you the same thing, worry about it then. One person is just one person. Actually if you get 200,000 people reading your book you’ve cracked it.

I wouldn’t worry about one person I would therefore concentrate on attracting non suspense readers and don’t market it as suspense, unless your friend has got it wrong.

Plenty of people out there reading all manner of things. You just need to find them. (Let me know when you’ve cracked it lol)

True, but I’m not really worried about my friend’s opinion.
I am worried about whether or not I should really work with betareaders.

But now that i think about it, I think I just need to ask them what kind of books they enjoy reading and go from there

message 486: by D.J. (new)

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments Yes that’s pretty much it. Get some that read your genre. That’s all.

DJ has the right of it- Books are subjective- Look at the different genres we all like!!

We worked with Julie for both Michael and myself.- she looked at a books marketability- plot holes, In other words-s he distanced herself from the story personally and looked at it like a professional.

Divide (in your head ) your books into a beginning, middle and end. Someone has to want something- work for it, and then discover something about themselves either by success or failure in achieving their goal.

I’m not worried about the plot of this one too much, just worried about feedback of my betareaders and friends is actually helpful or not. I really am writing this for a specific group of readers..

Alexis - I think at the end of the day you must write the book you enjoy, not everyone else. You'll find a variety of responses since no one feels the same about any book. Even if some people hate it, don't worry. It's part of a process we all go through.

If it's a book you could read 10 times and still feel thrilled about it, then you've probably achieved your personal goal at least. If you read it 10 times and find parts you start to skip, then work on making those areas something you'd like to read over and over.

If you'd like someone else to help you read, let me know and I'll be happy to give your story a shot.

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments Anyone heard of https://iAuthor.uk.com? The creator followed me on Medium so I looked at his website. You add your book for free and enter the links to buy it. You can add a free sample of your book, if you like. I haven't done that yet. You get to add your book to all relevant themes that apply to your book, or create a theme if a suitable one doesn't exist. I've added my book to loads and I haven't even scraped the surface of the list. You can put in your social media links and website links in. Nothing ventured-right?

ETA when I checked the latest books to be added it seemed the last one was published in February 2018. So current as of this year.
